NOT EXISTS Problem On SQL SERVER

I have a table in which there are the following 2 columns: sitm and pitm.
sitm is the child item, and pitm is the parent item. i would like to find all child items that are not parent items.
I would have thought that the following query would do this:
select sitm from lhpms010
where not exists (select pitm from lhpms010)
It doesn't return any results although there are certainly items in the sitm column that do not exist in the pitm column. I got the following solution from the SQL forum here, but as i am using SQLServer the 'minus' operator is not supported...
SELECT sitm FROM lhpms010
MINUS
SELECT pitm FROM lhpms010;
Any body know how i can implement this query with SQL Server?

Hi there,
I am quite new to SQL Server and am having a bit of trouble.
I have created a linked server with the datasource an excel spreadsheet.
I am trying to write a bit of T-SQL that basically checks if the linked server exists. If it does do X, if not do Y.
Can anyone help, its driving me bananas!

I have deleted a windows login user under security in SQL 2012 Management Studio. The users have also been removed from the associated databases. When I try to add back the login, I receive the message 'The server principal 'xxxx' already exists'. What do I need to do so that I can re-add the login ?

This issue is so frustrating. I am hoping someone knows the answer to this specific question.
Why would sql server insist that a database does not exist even though it obviously does exist?
I get the error message: Database 'tf_1' does not exist.
Why would it say it does not exist when it is clearly viewable in SMSS. It attached without problem. I can view the tables in the database. I know it's there; SMSS knows it's there; the VB app I wrote knows it's there. But, when I try to run a query to copy a table from one database to another, sql server says it doesn't exist! What gives?

This is the sql statement in vb:

Hi,
Iam using a connection string to connectin sql server from asp.net (vesion 1.1).
When iam using same connection string in windows form it is connecting to sql server proplery.
Iam using the same connection in asp.net (web based page) but is saying an error "SQL Server does not exists or access denied".
From Query analyzer iam able to connect to sql server.
Please let me know the reason .

I am trying to check if a view exists on a linked server using sys.views. I tried to fully qualify it but that produces an error telling me the below, which both the database name is correct as well as the server name. Is it possible to obtain a list of views from a linked server connection? Msg 7314, Level 16, State 1, Line 321 The OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI10" for linked server "alpha" does not contain the table ""salesdata"."sys"."views"". The table either does not exist or the current user does not have permissions on that table.
SQL Server 2008 is the server I want to query from and sql server 2000 is the server I want to query even if I try to use this syntax it still produces the above said error

All I really need to know is how to see if a specific node exists. Here's the XML, as well as the query I have:

Hi
I am using sql sever 2000 installed with sql authentication on windows 2003 server with SP2.
I have developed application on vb.net 2005.
When i am go to client system then my applciation doesnt start. for that i have to go to start->run then type \server and i have to enter username password.after that i can connect to my application.

When our production site was deployed on the client's WinServer2003, my webservice is throwing a "server does not exist or access denied" exception. I'm using the same connection string (typed once) as i'm using in my web forms on the user visible sections of the site. the service also works fine on my XP testing machine. unfortunately, I'm not a 2003 admin. If anyone can help, i would greatly appreciate it, trying to find what is misconfigured on the client's server is driving me bonkers.

i did a restore of a database, then tried to add the User login
to it, but when i select database access, i get the followinf error :-
"Error 15023, user or role already exists !
the user did exist on the Database, but when i select Database,Users or
Database,Roles the User doesn't exist !! so i can't drop it !

I have a stored procedure in that attempts to perform a WHERE NOT EXISTS check to insert new records. If the table is empty, the procedure will load the table. However, an insert does not occur when a change to one or more source fields occurs against an existing record. The following is my code:

I expected that when one of the source values of any field in the second WHERE clause changes, that the procedure would insert a new record. Why is this not happening? One other note: I am not 'allowed' to use MERGE.

I've the following two tables:

As a result I would need every name from #temp2, where both searchred id's (5 & 8) from #temp1 are included.In this example i would like to get 'e' as a result, because in #temp2 'e' has the id's 5, 8 and 25.I've tried using cross apply, but cross apply returns every Name that have one of the ids... in this case it would also return 'c'...

So, I've got this query running and it works great providing there is a record in both DataBases. Now, I need to get all of those that have a record in DBServer1 but not in TranscendDB. I assume i'd use an If not exists, but can't figure out the syntax when using the Linked Object...

I need to create a script task in sql server 2008 R2 to check if a file exists in a directory. For example, to see if output.dat exist under c:results. If the file exists, then send out an email stating the file exists, if not then send out another email stating the file does not exists.I noticed there is a huge difference between the script task in sql 2005 and sql 2008 r2.

I like writing concise and compact sql code without cursors if possible. My current dilemma has me stuck though.I have 3 tables, but one of them is optionally used and contains a key element of TimeOut to determine which Anesthesia CrnaID to use. It is the optionally used part that has me stumped.
Surgery table

Select Patient INNER JOIN Anesthesia produced too many case results. So, I figured out there is an AnesthesiaTime table that only gets used if the anesthesia guys take time-outs. That doesn't happen all the time. I could use TOP 1 on the Anesthesia table, but technically I need to read the AnesthesiaTime table and locate the last time and pull that crna, Jack. I'm not sure how to deal with an optional table. I believe the IF Exists will be pertinent, but not sure of how to build this query. I've tried subquery without success.

What I want to do is return a row of data when my query doesn't return a record. I have two tables:

So when I run the following query:

As you can see since 1 doesn't exists in table 'def' nothing is returned as expected. However, if a row isn't returned I want to be able to enter my own row such as
abc-1-200.00
abc-1-500.00
def-0-0.00

Good Afternoon.
I am trying to write a short application within which I would like to embed a SQL Server Express database, all of which would be deployed via ClickOnce through a web site. The installation process seems to be working without trouble, including installation of the .NET Framework 2.0 and SQL Server Express 2005.
When the application launches on the new machine, however, I get a big Microsoft .NET Framework "Unhandled exception" error dialog box that indicates the database already exists and that the database file could not be attached. I am working with a clean virtual machine that I know has never had the database installed on it.
I fear I am overlooking something quite straightforward, but since this is the first time I have ever attempted to build a data-bound application, I am not sure where I am going wrong.
Perhaps the source of the problem, or a related problem, might be revealed even when I run the application in debug mode from within Visual Studio. I can run the application once, but if I try to run it again, I get an error when I try to open the database connection that is similar in content (database already exists...could not attach). I can run the SSEUtil and detach the database and then run the application again in debug mode and it works no problem (the first time!).
Lastly, if I install the application on the machine on which it was developed and make sure the database is detached, it will run without any trouble (even repeatedly). But, on a new blank machine, there is no database listed that matches my database name, so I cannot try to detach anything!?
My apologies for such a novice question!

This is on Sybase but I'm guessing that the same situation would happen on SQL Server. (Please confirm if you know).
I'm looking at these new databases and I'm seeing code similar to this all over the place:

There's a unique clustered in dex on t1.f1.
The execution plan shows this for this statement:
FROM TABLE
dbo.t1
EXISTS TABLE : nested iteration.
Table Scan.
Forward scan.
Positioning at start of table.
It's not using my index!!!!!
It seems to be the case with EXISTS statements. Can anybody confirm?
I also hinted to use the index but it still didn't use it.
If the existence check really doesn't use the index, what's a good code alternative to this check?
I did this and it's working great but I wonder if there's a better alternative. I don't really like doing the SET ROWCOUNT 1 and then SET ROWCOUNT 0 thing. SELECT TOP 1 won't work on Sybase, :-(.

Due to a SQL 2014 cluster installation failure related to security while setting up the primary node, I had to remove the node and any related installation programs from the node and redo the installation again. However I am unable to use the machine name as the SQL network name during the instance configuration, I get the following:
Microsoft.SqlServer.Chainer.Infrastructure.InputSettingValidationException: The SQL Server failover cluster instance name "MachineName" already exists as a server on the network. Specify a different failover cluster instance name.I am still getting the same name since the node name "MachineName" is listed under the cluster name. I have used machine name as SQL network name without an issue. I do not have any existing SQL machine name in network using same machinename which I want to use for this installation.

I am trying to use a linked server and it works as long as I do not specify the sp_addlinkedserver @provstr parameter. If I specify that parameter I always get a 7416 "Access to the remote server is denied because no login-mapping exists" error. I have tried adding the logins various ways but it's very specific to the @provstr parameter, and it doesn't even matter what I put in that parameter. As soon as I put something in there whether it is valid or invalid, I get the error.
Anyone else seen this? There is an amazing lack of any discussion about the error when I search for it.
If I do this it works fine,
EXEC sp_addlinkedserver @server= 'linkedname', @srvproduct='', @provider='SQLNCLI', @datasrc='servername', @catalog='mydatabase'
EXEC sp_addlinkedsrvlogin 'linkedname', 'true', 'AppUser'
But as soon as I add the @provstr parameter, then I get the error if I try to use linkedserver,
EXEC sp_addlinkedserver @server= 'linkedname', @srvproduct='', @provider='SQLNCLI', @datasrc='servername', @catalog='mydatabase', @provstr='Failover Partner=otherservername'
EXEC sp_addlinkedsrvlogin @rmtsrvname='linkedname', @useself='true', @locallogin='AppUser'
It doesn't even make any difference what I put in the @provstr parameter - the sp_addlinkedserver statement always executes without an error, but running a query that uses the linked server generates the error.

I am trying to use a Transfer SQL Server Objects Task to copy a portions of tables from one db to a second db.
the connection is using Windows Authentication.
I am logged in as the Administrator
That user has sysadmin rights on the Sql Server in Question.
DropObjectsFirst = True
But when I execute the task I get the follwing warning
[Transfer SQL Server Objects Task] Warning: Stored procedure "{0}" already exists at destination.
What am I missing?

I have a table with dates and values and other columns. In a proc i need to get the result as Month and the values for all the months whether or not the data exists for the month.

I wanted to create a package to copy the objects from one database to another and replace those object if they already exist. Therefore, before the package executes you do not know whether all the objects exist on the target server or only some of them.
Using the 'Transfer SQL Server Objects Task' I have found that I cannot get this to execute cleanly by itself. If I set the 'DropObjectsFirst' to false then an error is thrown if the object exists and if I set it to true then an error is thrown if it does not exist.
In order to get round this I have had to create an 'Execute SQL Task' to list all the objects and then go through them dropping them on the target server in a for each loop before executing the 'Transfer SQL Server Objects Task' with 'Transfer SQL Server Objects Task' set to false.
However, is there a better way of achieving this or am I missing something in the 'Transfer SQL Server Objects Task'?

Say you have a fact table with a few columns that all reference the same key column in a dimension table, you want to write a view to return the information for those keys?
