I have developed a Smart Device Application using VB.NET 2003 on top of Windows Mobile 2003 platform which is running on Symbol PPT 8846, a model used in our construction sites for gathering data bar-coded on Pipes, trucks...etc. This application uses SQL CE as its back-end database and since its difficult to cover our sites with WI-FI coverage, most of the time the application is running offline. As for that, on a daily basis, synchronization is done in the offices before the system is released into sites. I have been doing several implementations in several projects and till now everything is running fine but until I got a native exception on exporting the data back into the server database. The server database or main database is using Fox Pro and this is what led me to build a Web Service for communication between SQL CE and Fox Pro. Anyways, going back to that mysterious exception, I did some of my intensive debug on what caused it. As a start, I went through the code line by line to check if there was a memory leak from P/Invokes; but I was shocked that the exception was raised from "SQLCEDataAdapter.Fill(Dataset)" function. First thought came to mind was to hard reset and to re-install the application but no luck. Since it was about SQLCE, I moved towards checking the data found in the SQLCE database and tried to de-fragment the data found under the table needed for export. What I mean by de-fragmenting is that I grouped the data under different classes or families and created different tables depending on these classes. Then tried exporting again and Bingo the data was exported except one record...That was so weird!! huh? (The database had 515 records)
So I went for the Query Analyzer to try to view that record but no hope, it was taking too long to view the record, I just left it for more than 15 minutes and still no response from the Analyzer...it was so strange since there was only one record in that table!!!?!!! As going further, I was so curious why this record causing that native and inability to be viewed by the Analyzer?? I did testing on the column-level of that record and found out that you can view all the columns except two : nvarchar(200) and nvarchar (20)....I was able to resolve this problem with an SQL statement to update both columns with empty or dummy values...!!!!!
But after this resolution, I really don't know how it could be controlled later on!! and why it happened??
I would be glad if anyone can give me any advise on why such problem popped out and especially on the column-level in SQL CE?? And how to overcome it?

I have written a very basic C# console test app to check the performance and reliability of SQLCE on Windows CE 5.0 (source code below). Running this on different Windows CE 5.0 devices, I always get a 0xc0000005 native exception error when reaching 25592 inserts. It doesn't matter whether the database is empty or not when the test is run, it always fails at that exact number of inserts. Given that I would expect a managed application not to be able to generate native exceptions anyway, and can't really see any reason why it would in this case, I'm at a bit of a loss as to what's going wrong... Any ideas?
Using: VS2005 w/ SP1 Windows CE 5.0 (on custom SH4 platform and HTC WM5 smartphone) .NET CF 2.0 w/ SP1 and post SP1 patch SQLCE 3.0.3600.0

I am developing a native C++ application using SQLCE (.NET is not a current option). Am having a problem while using multiple accessors for multiple blobs in a table. After I read the data for the first blob & try to read the data for the second one, I get an error in one of the dlls (something about using heap data that was freed). Where can I get symbol data so that I can use something like Windbg to resolve my problem.

- Merge replication is set up between SQL Server 2000 SP3 <-> SQL CE clients
- It is expected for the system to have 100-150 PDA users
- About 80-90 tables are being replicated. About half of the tables are for documents that PDA users create. These tables have to be filtered by SUSER_SNAME() to minimize data transfered and not to allow users to see each others documents. For filtering we used join filters (now there is about 30-40 join filters)
- Tables shared by users have GUID primary key, while other tables have identity columns.
System seemed to work fine when number of tables and number of join filters was about half that it is now.
Now, occasionally we get Native exception 0x00000005 on the PDA after calling Synchronize method of the C# Replication object. Data is transfered to the server, but the application hangs.
In the documentation for SQL Server it is mentioned that performance may suffer from too many join filters so this may be the cause of our problem.
If this is source of the problem one solution would be to use simple horizontal filtering on all tables now included in the join filters (and to add username field to all these tables). We could also reduce number of join filters with denormalisation (which we are not inclined to do).
Any other suggestions? Is our assumption about the source of the error corect?
Can anyone give us some recommendations for database metrics (number of constraints, tables, join filters etc) that can (or do) work with sql ce merge replication.
I found a peculiar thing today while working with SQL Mobile in a multithreaded application (VS2005, application for Pocket PC 2003).
I created a class which has one SqlCeConnection object. Every time I call a function to insert/select/delete something from the local db, I open the connection, execute the query an then close the connection again.
But when I'm calling a function from the db class in thread 1 and in the meantime call a different function (from the same db class of course) in thread 2, things go wrong. Because when function 1 wants to close the connection, function 2 is still using the connection and it will crash my application with a native exception (0xC0000005: access violation).
I can see why the error is happening, but shouldn't there be a nice .NET handled exception instead of a native exception which grinds my app to a hold?
(A workaround I use now is to use multiple connection objects instead of one, but I thought I'd give this feedback anyway)
ISSUE: While synchronizing data between the PDA and MS SQL Server database, using Active Sync connection, the sync process fails at times and displays an empty error message box and occasionally it shows the following exception: Error During Synchronization: A native exception occurred. ExceptionCode:0xc0000005 ExceptionAddress:0x01627b28 Reading: 0x1e000000 OK to terminate CANCEL to debug Moreover the .SDF file on the PDA gets corrupted. The ActiveSync connection drops as soon as the sync process fails. Later when the .SDF file is deleted and restored the synchronization is successful. Note: The replication monitor in the SQL Server indicates that the synchronization was successful even when the above error occurs.
We have written a multithreaded application in which we are maintaining separate Database connections for each thread. these connections are opened and closed at the start and exit of the thread.
We have observed that even if there is only one thread running ( application thread), execution of simple Select queries some times throws Native exception(Error - 0xc0000005 ).
This error comes intermittently. Execution of same query doesn't throw exception.
Further investigation by breaking the debug at the time of native exception and then looking into the stack trace shows that native exception has occured at one of the Native API (CompileQueryPlan() ) which is being called implicitly by the SQL Mobile.
Each time when we see native exception stack trace shows failure at CompileQueryPlan() call.
Let me know if this is a known defect in SQL Mobile 2005 or there is something else that is causing native exception.
I want to perform column level and database level encryption/decryption.... Does any body have that code written in C# or VB.NET for AES-128, AES-192, AES-256 algorithms... I have got code for single string... but i want to encrypt/decrypt columns and sometimes the whole database... Can anybody help me out... If you have Store procedure in SQL for the same then also it ll do... Thanks in advance

I am currently upgrading our ppc app (written in .net 2003) to .net 2005 and from sqlce 2.0 to 3.0. The new application runs out memory(storage) when handling lots of data transactions (both in case of using sqlcedatareader, and dataset ). There is no memory leak issue here, sqlce 3.0 simply uses a lot more (3 times more) memory than sqlce 2.0.
Our applicaton runs fine using sqlce 2.0 and .net 2003, but fail due to memory shortage
with the upgrades(which has the same code). Anyone can shed some lights on this issue?

I have a routine that calculates the size of a set of columns in order to create a byte buffer for retrieving data from an IRowset and inserting it into a custom class. This method works great for all data types except ntext. When I look at the column information from an ntext field, the DBCOLUMNINFO::ulColumnSize member holds 536,870,911 (the max length of an ntext type). Obviously I dont want to allocate 1GB of memory for each ntext column. Is there anyway (natively) to determine the actual number of characters in a field?
Greetings everyone, I am attempting to build my first application using Microsofts Sql databases. It is a Windows Mobile application so I am using Sql Server Compact 3.5 with Visual Studio 2008 Beta 2. When I try and insert a new row into one of my tables, the app throws the error message shown in the title of this topic. '((System.Exception)($exception)).Message' threw an exception of type 'System.NotSupportedException'

Account type will either be "Checking" or "Savings" when a new row is added, the user will select what they want from a combo box.

Where it says "Favorite Account: None" in the top panel, I am using a link label. When a user clicks "None" it will go to a account creation wizard, and set the first account as it's primary/favorite. As more accounts are added the user can select which will be his/her primary/favorite. For now I am just creating a sample account when the label is clicked in an attempt to get something working. I have no idea what I am doing wrong, all of the code I used I retreived from Microsofts help documentation included with VS2008. I have tried used my TableAdapter.Insert() method and it still failed when it got to

But I get an exception column Test_Question.Grade_Number is invalid in the select list because it is not contained in either an aggregate function or the group by clause.
Could some one point out what is the problem in the above query.
For a DBConcurrency exception, is there a way to determine the Column(s) that triggered the excepction? The exception itself does not seem to contain the information. You could probably write a very complex method comparing
DataRowVersions
, to determine which value is different, but that seems overkill.

When running the package in VisualStudio it runs properly, but if I let this package run as part of an SQL-Server Agent job, I got the message "The script threw an exception: Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown." on my log and the package ends up with an error.
Both times it is exactly the same package on the same server, so I don't know how the debug or even if there is anything I need to debug?

Today, I'm the town moron.. haha I'm having issues with column level constraints. I have a varchar(50) where I want to keep *,=,#,/, .. etc, OUT OF the value input. I don't want to strip them. I simply want for sql to throw an error if the insert contains those (and other characters). The only characters that I want in the column are A-Z and 0-9. However, it's not a set number of characters per insert. It always varies... There has to be an easier way to do this than creating a constraint for every possibilty... Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Is it possible to have a corruption in one of the columns in a table at a specific row? If yes, what could be the possible causes for such corruption? Why I am asking? Because it happened that I wasn't able to read the value of a specific column but I was able to update it with other value! it sounds weird if you are able to write but not to read!! **I wasn't able to read but after I updated it with another value...it was readable... Please advise...??

This is for a telephony application using Last In Wins concurrency...
Basically, we want to update only the columns that have changed in a row, not the entire row with the few changed columns. We are using TableAdapters exclusively.
We need concurrency down to the column level...that is to say, if a concurrency exception is thrown, we don't just want the new row to be UPDATED and overwrite the old row in the datasource...we only want the new columns to be UPDATED to the datasource...consider the following sequence...
- Fill table A and table B identically
- change column1 value in table A
- Update table A
- change column2 value in table B
- Update table B - this will generate a concurrency error.
Most of the help centers around using the merge command, to update table B, but in the situation above, we would lose the change to column1 (which we don't want to loose). Merge preserves the changes in table B (column2), but it would have the old value for column1, thus we would loose the value in column 1 when we updated the new merged table.
So, we need a way to build a datatable made up of the values in the datasouce plus the changes in the table B, which we will then update.
I have played endlessly with for/next type of constructs to build the new table of new column values using row version data, but I cannot get it to happen.
Upon exception for UPDATING table B, how do we build a temporary table from the datasource (so we get the change to column 1) and the new changes in table B, so we can update the temporary table and not loose any data.

No. 1. Person A should have permission to read values only (Column1, Column3 of the table) - 2. Person B, should have permission to read only (Column 2).
Here my question is , I have to write one single stored procedure to statisfy both conditions. Which means, if person A execute this stored procedure , he shoud get only column 1 & 3 values . similarly other person b should get column 2 value. I found this on an msdn website (link: http://www.microsoft.com/sql/editions/sqlmobile/upgrading.mspx) but as you can see its very lacking on detail. (I included the link and content referring to upgrading the database files so you won't have to go to the link to see the part referring to upgrading the database.) I tried to run the upgrade.exe on my device but it doesn't explain how you're supposed to point it to the .sdf that you are trying to update. Here is the content on the above web page.
Upgrading Database Files You can upgrade a database created with an earlier version of SQL Server CE 2.0 to a database created with SQL Server Mobile by using the SQL Server Mobile Database Upgrade tool (upgrade.exe). The Database Upgrade tool runs on a smart device.
When you run the SQL Server Mobile Database Upgrade tool, the new SQL Server Mobile database is created on the smart device. The new database, with the file name extension .sdf, contains all the data that was in the source database. You need to reinitialize the upgraded database to continue using it for replication.
Note: If you are using replication or remote data access (RDA) as a connectivity solution before upgrading to SQL Server Mobile, you must synchronize the source SQL Server CE database (subscription database) with the SQL Server database (Publisher). I am trying to find the best way to implement a complex column based security. When I try to execute a package I get this following error. I have a bunch of similar packages which runs fine on the same source(sybase) and destination(sqlserver 2005), just different tables. Only few of them fails and all of them have the same error of "Unable to resolve column level collations. Bulk-copy cannot continue". I checked for the dtatatype and length between source and destination, both are same. The user have all the required rights on the objects in both source and destination.

On further trial and error I found that if I remove the fast load option, it works without glitch.

I have to implement a complex algorithm that processes each row and each column.I have bunch complex steps at the end of which a table gets populated with the processed columns.
My question is as to what is the best way to do this?CLR integration or T-SQL? Also I would appreciate any ideas as to how to go about using either approaches.
One of the steps of processing involved per column is as follows:- 1)For each column,find successive invalid values from the start of the column.Invalid value= any value <0 2)find the invalid value depth of each column(no of successive invalid values from start) 3)If after these invalid vlaues,there is a valid value and another invalid value,replace current invalid value with valid value. ie replace invalid value only if it has a valid value above it. 4)find the column with maximum invalue value depth and delete that many rows from the table.
Here's am example:- Suppose there are 2 columsn colA and ColB.The columns have different datatypes eg decimal,int,string etc. For simplicity colA and colB are ints. RowID is keeping track of the row number.
Step1)successive invalid values from start=0,-5,-3 Step2)Invalid value depth=3(because there are 3 rows from step 1) Step3)0,-5,-3 do not have any valid value above them.But -9 has a valid value 4 above it.So replace -9 with 4.

I need to create a function that will check data inputted by a user into a column anc check for special charaters. If any of these exist then block the insert.
I have visual studio 2005 with XP home. I'm trying to find out which service pack my SQL server is running as I've been told that Service pack 2 has a few bugs.
For example ADO Applications Report a Syntax Error When Column Names Contain Spaces. This appears to be an error i am recieving. I just wanted to confirm that it is a microsoft bug rather then something Im doing wrong. Microsoft meantions the bug here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/264687
I've been looking everywhere. I do not have the "query analyzer window" where you can find this out as I have VS 2005. How would I find this out.
