Need Advice: One SQL Server 2000, One Web App, Multiple Clients With Their Own Data
Feb 29, 2008
Hello,
I'm looking into offering a custom data driven web app that I wrote for an organization that I'm apart of to other similar organizations. I would be hosting the data and web application code on my dedicated server. This application is using the membership api supplied in .NET 2.0 and also has my own custom data tables within it.
My question is what would be the best way to add clients to this? Should I simply create a new database for each new client like so: ACME_Database, ABC_Database, AAA_Database etc. Or should I add some sort of client "Tag" (tag meaning column within each datatable) to these databases and then update my SQL queries to process them accordingly.
I imagine I could do both but I guess I need some advice from people that already had experiance with providing this kind of service.
Thanks!
Jason

I have a script that needs to be run for 50 different @ClientID. I dont want to run this script individually for each clientid. Would 'SET @clientID in (111, 222, 333) work? I've been told that it wouldn't. Short version of the script is.....
DECLARE @ClientID varchar (MAX)
DECLARE @UserID varchar (MAX)
SET @ClientID = 111 -- Replace with Client ID
SET @UserID = 5656 -- Replace with your ID
[Code] .....

I have a SQL Server 2005 Express database that was designed to be used by one client. What is the best way to change the design so it can contain multiple clients that can only see data entered by users of each client organization?
Also I'm using the asp.net membership database to handle login and profiles. Can this be used with my multi client database?

Hi all,I've got a question concerning synchronization of multiple database clients.Consider a database, accessed by two clients. Is it guarantted, that ifclient 1 succefully commits a transaction, client 2 _instantly_ sees thechanges made by client 1?thx and regards,StephanP.S..: For MS Jet databases I know there _is_ a delay between writing datato the database and being able to read this updated value from anotherconnection,so the question refers to "real" DBMs (esp. SQL Server) only ;)

We have a situation where multiple-random client connections to SQL server get disconnected.
The workstations are not consistent, the time is not consistent, and the functions being run are not consistent. One thing that we can reproduce is that sometime, but not always, if a workstation runs a function that calls a specific stored procedure (SQL native client, ADO, SQL Server 2005 SP2), during the course of the parameter validation (after the .execute) SQL sends an ACK, RST followed by two RST TCP packet back to the client and disconnects the connection.
At the same time, several other connections across multiple computers are also dropped by SQL. However, some computers may have multiple connections to SQL and some, but not all of these will be dropped. Other computers will
not have their connections dropped at all.
No SQL server errors are logged. Trace flags 4029 and 3689 have been set.
We have the network packet traces and the SQL profiler output to show this.
This is not reproducable at any other site.
Any ideas on what this could be would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all,
I've been running SQL Server 2005 for over three months, and have got the database up to speed. Using SSMSE for an interface.
I've have been trying to get the Intranet to link to the database (ASP), but after a little research i found we needed to change the Authentication from 'Windows Authentication' to a mix of windows auth and sql login. Needing to restart the server for the changes to take effect.
After the restart things started to go pear shaped.
Before the restart we were able to run queries from different clients at the same time (4 workstations). Now we are unable to access anything on the database if a query is running on a seperate client. As in table properties, running a query. As i've said, we were able to do this perfectly fine before the restart.
We also use other programs to generate records for the database. These programs now have difficulty connecting to the database. We've gone through the wizards and as far as we are aware things should be working. We have created extra username/logins for these programs so not one computer/client/program uses the same connection login. However, they are unable to connect even after the wizard says there is no problem connecting to the server.
Is there any *restore to factory/default settings* button? We've even tried reverting to Windows Authentication to try and solve the problem, but it didn't work, we're pretty dependant on the database for day to day operations.
Anyone with an idea as to what's wrong?
Thanks in advance
Gary.

Hi Everyone,I have one database file which needs to be accesable to both a .net website and a vb.net application.The application collects data from the 'real world', processes it and adds the data to the database. The Website reads data from the database and displays the data in a graphical format.Now for the problem; While the Application is connected to the database (adding data), the Website is denied acces to the database. All connections to the DB are disposed when the Application is not uploading data, but the Website continues to be locked out (making it pretty useless) Closing the Application makes the Website work fine, but of course this means no 'real world' data can be updated.Can anyone suggest what is happening here, and more importantly how to fix it? A walkthrough must be available for this problem somewhere,... I just can't find it :(Thanks all,*The Stressed One*

I think I will have a problem with Id’s when I do merge replication. The problem is, I have several clients (local shops) who can do additions to a (Customer) table. Other tables will link to that table (things that a customer buys) with their foreign key, so the id of this table is very important. Now, twice a day that table with customers is merged from all clients to the central server. (the table with things that the customer buys, does not needs to be merged as it only remains local).
Possible problem:
if we assign ranges to identifiers for each client (thus local shop), which will be the best option we found until so far, how can we then detect the doubles? (with doubles, we mean that when the same customer is added in two local shops for a first time, then we will have the same customer twice in the central database)(afterwards, when we delete one customer row in the central database, we might have a id conflict when we merge back to the clients -as a customer might have already bought some goods at the two different shops meanwhile-)
What’s the common practice to resolve this?
(we need to do Merge Replication, because during the day, our local shops are disconnected from the central server)

Hi!
We have multiple databases (1 per client) and we want to use reporting services for ad-hoc reporting. Our authentication is done by using client's database so security is custom.
What is the best way to set this up? Is it possible to somehow allow users/admins to use only their database and never see any others? I know we can install a separate instance of RS and do that but I am wondering if there is a better way to run multiple clients doing different reports using exclusively their databases without having to create a new instance.
Thanks

Hi, i was after some advice on moving a SQL Server 2000 database from one server to another.
Usually i would do this by backing up the database on the original server the copying it accross the LAN to the new server and restoring it there. This database is 10Gb in size and copying it accross the LAN will take some time and i would like to minimise downtime if possible. The database is at a customer site where i am not responsible for the network or Hardware.
Thanks in advance for your help

Hi all,
Got a good question to ask. At the moment, I do not have any control over the reporting server webserver. This is due to the company's policy. The webhosting is controled by antoher department.
Anyways, the question is the following:- Is there a way to customize the config file for the htmlviewer (css style sheet, rendering and others) for a specific client without affecting the rest ?
There are about 20 clients on a server, and I am responsible for one of them. I had customized my config file to render or allow only two formats for this particular client. Since I don't have any control over the websever, I just can't replace the config file without affecting the others. How do i do this ? I just want th config file to ONLY affect a certain client's HTMLViewer and not the others. I tried to do some research on this, but came up empty handed.
Thanks !

I am someting of a newbie to SQL Server, but I am an experienced C++/C# programmer.
I have a SQL Server 2005 DB to which are connected 50 or so clients.
The clients are running my software, written in C# and connected to the server by an OleDBConnection.
These connections are long-lived; in some cases they remain for days or more.
Now and again, one of the clients causes a change to the DB (not structural, just normal adds, update and deletes).
But most of the time the clients are just viewing data in the DB.
What I need to happen is that when any item of information changes, the display of that information on any of the clients which are viewing it must be updated quickly.
It doesn't have to be instant, but a delay or more than, say, 5 seconds is unacceptable.
It is like a share-dealing or foreign exchange system (although that is not what it is) where the traders' screens have to have up-to-date information at all times.
Note that the information received by the clients does not have to describe the change in detail, just a hint to the client as to what change has happened so that the client can refresh its views.
I can think of a way of doing this but it is really nasty.
The hints would be recorded in a time-stamped table. Each client would poll every couple of seconds by calling a SP, which would return the hints which have been added since the last time that client polled.
But polling is horrible and I am sure that there must be a better way.
A route that looks promising is InfoMessages. But, reading around the subject, it looks like these cannot be unsolicited and spontaneous; they only arrive on a Connection as a result of some action on that Connection.
I may have missed something, or maybe InfoMessages are not the way to go.
Can anyone offer me any advice, please
TIA,
Paul

hi I was just writing for some general advice. If I am to do many updates on a table is it okay to keep updating with many insert statements inside of a loop closing the connection each time? Here is some pseudo code to give you an idea:
cnn.open();
cmd = "insert into Cats values (red,4994,homer)";
for(int i=0; i<10000; i++)
{
cmd.executenonquery();
cnn.close();

My co worker designed a database where retail items can be placed in multiple catagories. This seems odd to me..... In general, Isnt it more normal than not to be only one catarory for each item? For example, lets say I was selling a bowling ball with a picture of Mickey Mouse on it. I can then find this item in the "Mickey Mouse" catagory or in the "bowling ball" catagory but in the database the bowling ball has only one catagoryID. When I worked for a multi-million dollar corporate retail store , an item was listed once in only one catagroy. But i am sure items can be viewed
I know there isnt a single rule, I am just looking for a solution. How should the database sturucture be built with this in mind starting out with what is listed below???? Mabey an attributes table?
Items
ItemID ItemName CatagoryID
Catagories
CatagoryID CatagoryName

We are about to migrate just over 30 databases from a SQL server 7 installation to a SQL 2000 on a different server. Each database has it's own logins.
What is the best, and most fool-proof path to take? I know from previous experience that restoring a single database works fine, but that the logins are orphaned. Are there complications with restoring the master database from the SQL 7 machine on the SQL 2000 machine? Any advice would be helpful as this is bound to be a painful process. ;-)
Thanks!

Hello,
I am asking a question i have seen many threads on, but I am looking for an idiot's guide on how to convert my SQL 2005 database to SQL 2000 so i can get it to run on my web hosting server. I'm very new to asp.net , but have ahd years of experience in normal HTML and a year or two in the old ASP.
I was advised to learn ASP.Net 2.0 and have found it nothing but brilliant. The intergration with SQL 2005 made it a lot quicker to link up a database than using Access. Unfortunatly my hosting company is a little behind and still using SQL 2000. There isn't mch databse intergration (a few aplication forms) so I dont mind re-writing the whole database but I dont know how to set Visual web developer up with a SQL 2000 Database. I have also read from various other forums that you can convert a databse to 2000 by doing something with the scripts, but the explaination is too complicated for me to follow.
Is there anyone out there who wouldn't mind going over some old ground and explain this all in simple terms? Im using 'SQL Server Managment Studio Express' (although i dont know how to use it) and 'Microsoft visual web developer 2005 express edition' .
Thanks for reading this

Hi all!
I'm trying to get some XML data into SQL Server but i ran into problem when inserting the data (multiple orders with multiple order details) using a single sproc. Is it possible, or do I have to do in some other way? :confused:
I simplified my example to this:
-----------------------------
--CREATE PROCEDURE sp_InsertOrders AS
DECLARE @docHandle INT, @xmlDoc VARCHAR(4000), @orderID INT
--DROP TABLE #Orders
CREATE TABLE #Orders
(
OrderId SMALLINT IDENTITY(1,1),
FkCustomerID SMALLINT NOT NULL,
OrderDate DATETIME NOT NULL
)
--DROP TABLE #OrderDetails
CREATE TABLE #OrderDetails
(
OrderDetailsId SMALLINT IDENTITY(1,1),
FkOrderID SMALLINT NOT NULL,
ProductID SMALLINT NOT NULL,
UnitPrice SMALLINT NOT NULL
)
Set @xmlDoc = '
<Orders>
<Order CustomerID="1" OrderDate="2004-04-01">
<OrderDetails ProductID="6" UnitPrice="19"/>
<OrderDetails ProductID="3" UnitPrice="11"/>
<OrderDetails ProductID="9" UnitPrice="7"/>
</Order>
<Order CustomerID="2" OrderDate="2004-04-12">
<OrderDetails ProductID="2" UnitPrice="24"/>
<OrderDetails ProductID="4" UnitPrice="13"/>
</Order>
</Orders>'
EXEC sp_xml_preparedocument @docHandle OUTPUT, @xmlDoc
INSERT INTO #Orders (FkCustomerID, OrderDate)
SELECT CustomerID, OrderDate
FROM OpenXML(@docHandle, 'Orders/Order', 3)
WITH (
CustomerID INTEGER,
OrderDate DATETIME
)
SET @OrderID = @@IDENTITY;
--INSERT INTO #OrderDetails (@OrderID, ProductID, UnitPrice)
SELECT @OrderID AS OrderID, ProductID, UnitPrice
FROM OpenXML(@docHandle, 'Orders/Order/OrderDetails', 3)
WITH (
ProductID INTEGER,
UnitPrice INTEGER
)
-----------------------------
All orders are inserted first which makes the use of @@IDENTITY incorrect (it works fine if you insert a single order with multiple order details). Since it was quite some time since I last worked with SQL I am not sure if am doing it the right way... :confused: :confused: Anybody out there who knows how to solve the problem?
Cheers,
Christian

Hi,I am having a hard time setting up an SQL Server 2000 DeveloperEdition instance for remote clients. The instance is running well andI can connect to it on the local computer. When I try connecting fromanother computer using Enterprise Manager with the server's IP as theinstance name, I always get the usual "Specified SQL Server not found"error. I have used Enterprise Manager many times to connect to localand remote servers (which were set up by someone else obviously).I used the client network utility on the client to make an alias forthis server and have it use the TCP/IP library for port 1433.I understand that SQL Server listens on port 1433 for connections. Ihave a firewall on the server and setup 1433 forwarding. But when Iuse Enterprise Manager to try to register the server, the firewalldoesn't even show a connection attempt on port 1433 (it logs allconnection attempts).When I use telnet to port 1433, the firewall logs the attempt butthere is still no connection, as if the server isn't actuallylistening on 1433 at all. I can't seem to find any help on getting theserver listening, as if it supposed to be easy to set up so I don'tknow what I'm missing. I guess I have the following questions:1) Does anything have to be done on the server side to set it up tolisten for remote client connections?2) How do I set the port on which the server listens in case I want tochange from 1433?3) Does anything have to be set up on the client side other than usingthe client network utility?4) Why does Enterprise Manager not seem to even attempt a connectionon port 1433 when I try to register this server?Any help is appreciated.

Hello, I know that this has been asked several times, but none of the answers that I've found seem to help me.
I've been programming a C# client app that helps netadmins at my school file and solve tickets. I use an SQL 2005 backend; it works just fine on my dev computer (with C# express installed) which doubles as the SQL server. Now, when I move to a different computer, w/o Visual C# or SQL installed, I get.
"Request for the permission of type 'System.Data.SqlClientPermission, System.Data, Version=2.0.0.0,Culture=neutral,PublicKeyToken=(RANDOMVALUE)' failed."
my connection string
@"Server=FLHS7T-39312914SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=True;Database=msdb"
I've previously been able to get it to run both on client and server, but this error cropped up after a bit of a hiatus...

Hi!
I just used the SSIS Import and Export Wizard to copy 50+ tables from SS05 to SS2K.
I found that the wizard created a package that I could not figure out how to edit, e.g., to change whether or not it had to CREATE a table, or just use an existing one. (I created some problems by manually editing the receiving table names to be ones that already existed -- but the original names it had did not exist, so it knew it had to create them. What I should have done, and eventually ended up doing, was scroll through my list of tables in the "receiving" box; I just figured editing the name would be faster, not realizing what problems I would create for myself.)
Anyhow, now that I see the complex package that the wizard creates, with a LOOP over the 50+ tables, I would like to know how/where in the package it is storing the information about the tables to copy.
Basically the wizard creates the following Control Flow tab entries (in processing sequence order):
an Execute SQL Task: NonTransactableSql
an Execute SQL Task: START TRANSACTION
a Sequence Container: Transaction Scoping Sequence, which contains
an Execute SQL Task: AllowedToFailPrologueSql
an Execute SQL Task: PrologueSql
a Foreach Loop Container, which contains
a Transfer Task with an icon I did not notice in the Toolbox
an Execute Package Task: Execute Inner Package
an Execute SQL Task: EpilogueSql
an "on success" arrow to
an Execute SQL Task: COMMIT TRANSACTION
an Execute SQL Task: PostTransaction Sql
an "on failure" arrow to
an Execute SQL Task: ROLLBACK TRANSACTION
an Execute SQL Task: CompensatingSql
Where, and how, can I look within this package to see the details about the tables I am transferring? I see that one of the Connection Managers is "TableSchema.XML" -- but it points to a temporary file on my hard drive, that I presume is populated by the package. Where does it get its information?
This is certainly much more complex than the package I would have written, based on my limited knowledge of SSIS. I would have been inclined to create 50+ Data Flow tasks, one for each table.
So now I'm trying to understand why the Wizard created this more-complex package.
Any help will be appreciated, including references to non-Microsoft books/websites/etc.
Thanks in advance.

Hi, I am trying to edit some data from a SQL2000-datasource in ASP.NET 2.0 and have a problem with a column that has bit-data and is used for selection. SQL2005 works fine when declaring <SelectParameters> <asp:Parameter DefaultValue="TRUE" Name="APL" Type="boolean" /> </SelectParameters>When running this code with SQL2000, there are no error-msgs, but after editing a record the "APL"-column looses its value of 1 and is set to 0. Looks like an issue with type-conversion, we've hit incompatibilities between SQL200 and 2005 with bit/boolean several times before. So, how is this done correctly with SQL2000? (I've tried setting the Type to "int16" -> err. Also setting Defval="1" gave an err) ThanksMichael

Luckily we could retrieve all thedata from the backups.How do you guys prevent this from happening in your large systems. Is theresome teqnique for controlling this, I would imagine if you had thousands ofrecords in a table and some one made a programming error, then theconsequences would be disastrous.is there a setting within SQL Server that could force SQL update commands tobe limited to a criteria and if no criteria is supplied then reject thecommandthanks in advanceAndy
