I am totally new at SQL/SQL express.I have downloaded the sQL express server and wanted to know how i can go about exporting my tables which i created using MS access into SQL express.
Also my application is currently working by using Access and ASP...what will be the changes i would need to incorporate in my code other than the queries and Data connection string.
How would the data connection string in SQL look like if i am using it in my asp code?
Any help or useful links would be a very good help!

Hi all, We have access database with lots of data in it. I want to move all the dat to the new database which has completely differenet database structure (e.g different tables, different rows). What I was thinking is that there are 2 ways. one is manually, which will take long tome probably, and the other is to rum queries that will move the data from access to the new sql express. The question is how to that. I know that I used onw CSV files exported for ms access, but now the queries will be much more complex and I will use more then one table for te query. How can I query from 2 different databases, which from one I read data(access), and from the other I write data (express)? Thanks alot.

Hi guys, its been awhile. I inherited a database thats an MDB and I need to get it on to sql server but I am having problem with this query, can anyone help please. Its suppose to give you the month and year when you click on it, you just put that in and up come the results on a query or report, now I have something similar to this but the code is very different.

We have a huge Access database located on a server, but now it is going very slow due to the transport of Mb file to the clients.
We could export the tables to a SQL server and attach the tables to the access clients.
So the question is, will access still treat the tables as it use to or could we expect access SQL querys to request the sql server as normal. Will access process the query on the client side?
We use MS Access 2000 as our database, but run into lots of proplems. So we decided to research the migration to SQL Server.
I used Access Upsizing utitlity to migrate tables and their data to SQL server very easily, and all the relationships, indecies and other information are converted correctly.
Next is to migrate the queries. I found that to be a pain. Is there any tool out there that can do it for me? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Once that's done, then it's the application itself, but I am not worrying that for now.
The company i am working for has been using an Access database for purchasing and inventory. this has become to small/dangerous due to the number of records and frequent 'database needs repair' errors. I am trying to migrate the database to a sql server w/ access front end and am runing into problems with most of the VB proceedures that are built into the database. the most common at the moment is a 'Write Conflict' error saying someone else changed the record i am editing. i know this can't be the case becasue i am working on this in an isolated environment. I have traced it to a VB script that changes a field from 'Entering' to 'Pending' (text field) on the click of the 'new record' button. any ideas?
Hey guys, I had purchased a program that generates full operational asp.net pages from an access db. I was unfamiliar with the language, and so that was the route I took. After disecting it and studying I've learned a bit and made it work in my environment. However, I now need to migrate everything over to mssql. I got the db portion down and now I'm trying to modify my scripts to point to a sql db rather than an access db. I thought it was going to be relatively simple but it's proving to be quite a challenge for me.Was wondering if anyone could check my work. further down I have a wmx data grid. I'm assuming I don't need to touch that but there is a line that has, <wmx:AccessDataSourceControl id="AccessDataSourceControl1" runat="server" ></wmx:AccessDataSourceControl> and I don't know what the equivilant of that is. I know its pointing to the accessdatasoucrcontrol1 that has the select command, but what would be the equivilant ofwmx:accessdatasourcecontrol?Also, is this the way to go? by that i mean, should I just rescript everything? I need to migrate my access database to SQL2000 Server. I have three tables in my access database. In each table have 3000-6000 records. So how to put all these records in to sql2000 server tables. The table structure in Access database and sql2000 database are same.

so as you can see i want to migrate from My SQL 5.0 to MS SQL Express. Is there any free tool provided by microsoft or something else i could to use to migrate my databases. I need this cause old web page was developed on PHP and now it's redeveloped on ASP.NET and i have very strange issues with ASP.NET and MySQL Lots of incompatibility and performace degradation, so i would like to try out MS SQL i think it must be better.
I tried various ways to migrate an access 2003 database with 1 table to sql Express 2005 Edition without success, I can only find the resulted sql database in Sql Server Express Edition 2005 without data. Please advise if any help.

Recently we have migrated our application from MSDE 2000 to SQL Server Express 2005(SP 1). This has significantly reduced the performance of our Windows.NET application which is developed using C#.
For example : While logging in to the application two databases are being attached.
Time taken in MSDE: 16 secs
Time taken in SQL Server Express 2005 : 58 secs Also note performance is degraded for normal screens where data is retrived from database using inline queries.
Questions:
1) Is there any special(optimum) configuration(installation parameters) while installing the SQL Server Express 2005 setup?
2) Is there any query optimization to be done w.r.t SQL Server Express 2005 ?

I am new to SQL Server, but the current project that I am working on has the following requirement:-
1) Migrate the application (a servlet based web application on Apache Tomcat) from Solaris to Wintel 2) Migrate the supporting database from SQL Server 2000 to Sql Server 2005 3) Get IIS to communicate with Tomcat for serving servlet/jsp etc to the client
Though I successfully completed item 1 above, am stuck at item 2. Details are below
Actions taken for item 2
A. Installed MS 2005 B. Created new database in MS 2005 (logged in as user 'sa') C. Generated SQL scripts (such as create table table_A etc) from existing MS 2000 D. Genearted SQL scripts (such as insert into table_A etc) from existing MS 2000 E. Created new schema in MS 2005 F. Ran scripts C & D in the new schema. All tables are records populated. G. Obtained new JDBC driver and test run to see if connection is working fine, and it worked. Even ran an sql statment

H. When I made the application to talk to this new database (which is a copy of Production from step C, D above), it's behaving as though it cannot find the record. I. When I further debugged, I realised that the web application is excuting queries without mentioning the schema. For eg.
Code Block[Select firstName, lastName from table_A]
Or rather it assumes that the user connecting to database is same as the schema name.
J. To further ascertain my point, I ran the query
Code Block[Select firstName, lastName from sa.table_A]
and it worked!
Now the real problem is that I cannot modify the existing code to append a schema name and this approach is rather not recommended best practise.
I tried to match the user name with the schema name, even made this schema as default to the user. But still not finding any luck.
I request all you experts out there to help me out with this problem.

I am using Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition along with SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.
Now here's what I did:
Rather than use the Database Explorer within VB2005 EE to create my database, I thought I would try creating my database externally using the downloadable "SQL Server Management Studio Express" tool. (I figured that if I had a stable data model for my database, I could side-step the copying/overwriting issues that come with creating a database as part of a VB solution.)
So having gotten my database setup and populated with some sample data, I am now trying to connect to it from Visual Basic. In VB (in the context of working on a VB Solution), I do the following:
Select Add New Data Source... from the Data menu to bring up the Data Source Configuration Wizard. Choose "Database" for the data source type and click Next. Click "New Connection..." to bring up the Add Connection dialogue.
For data source I choose "Microsoft SQL Server Database File", with ".NET Framework Data Provider..." as the data provider. Navigate to my existing database file (in "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData" folder). Use Windows Authentication.
When I click "Test Connection" or just click "OK", i get the Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition error shown at the top of this message.
Is this occuring because I'm trying to access my database as an .MDF file rather than through Named Pipes / Shared Memory / TCP/IP? If this is the case, is there any way that I can tell VB2005 EE to use Named Pipes / Shared Memory / TCP/IP? Is this a fundamental limitation of VB2005 EE?

I have a medical records system, SoapWare v4.90, that uses MSDE (SQL2000) databases. Due to the 2gb limitation, I am trying to migrate over to SQL 2005 (Standard or Express) which I have heard works fine. The SoapWare has a datamanager that allows me to log in to the MSDE instance, detach the SoapWare databases from msde (as well as do backups, etc) which I can confirm are detached.
Then I log back into a SQL2005 database instance using the datamanager and try to attach the database. This is what their pictured instructions demonstrate. However, I get the following error:
Database 'sw_charts' cannot be upgraded because it is read-only or has read-only files. Make the database or files writeable, and rerun recovery.
Of course, some of the entries will be read only, since doctors have to sign off the charts and are not allowed to subsequently change them. But I should still be able to switch over to sql 2005?!?!?!?
Or... is there a way to attach the databases to SQLExpress manually?
Hi,I have developed an application using VB 6 (SP 5), MS Access 2000 andCrystal Reports 9. I migrated from from access to SQl Server 2000.This wasn't a problem as i could import all the tables to SQL Server.Also, i could make VB6 talk to SQl Server.The problem arsies when i run my application. The sql syntax foraccess seems to be different than that for SQL Server. A simpleexample being: In access boolean datatype is true/false ,whereas inSQL Server the boolean equivalent is bit (numerical 1 or 0). Thesekind of issues are causing problems and most queries don't run.Would i need to go and change all the queries in accordance with SQlServer syntax ,which would be very time consuming or is there anyfunction which will convert the access datatype into its equivalentSQl Server datatype??Any input/thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated.ThanksJatin

i have an older asp web application (not .net) which connects to an access database and reads tables. the .mdb file resides on the web server, along with the asp page. the access db is going away, and the tables have been re-created in SQL express. I need to figure out how to connect and read the tables from either the existing non dot.net asp application, or a new php application.

Hi, i am very new to databases. I use VWD 2005, Sql Server Express 2005 and have a remote database through a host rather than my own server. i have managed to create sql databases fine. Its with Access Databases Im really geting confused: Can i use an access database I have created using VWD and sql server Express 2005? Or would it run just through VWD and the remote ? If i use VWD I dont usually need to use IIS but if the latter of the two options is what I must do then i would manually need to create a virtual folder? Nick
