I Cannot Create A Brand New MDF (sql Server Database) With Visual Basic 2005

Apr 20, 2007

Hi everybody:

I go to Server Explorer, right click on Data Connection, input the server name (that is, my own computer), give a new name to the database to create, and then inevitably get the error window saying:

An error occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connectiong to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL server does not allow remote connections. (Provider: Named Pipes Provider, error 40, could not open a conection to SQL Server)

So, how to open a connection to SQL server 2005? I looked in the msdn but found absolutely nothing.

Please help

Sql Server 2005 Compact Edition 3.1 RDA Synchronization Fails On Table With Index In Sql Server 2005 Database

Jan 21, 2008

We have been using Sql Server 2005 Compact Edition 3.1 RDA synchronization method successfully on Sql Server 2000 database. Recently we moved the database to Sql Server 2005, sync doesn't work anymore, it just hangs on one table. On further investigation, we found out that it's the index on that table that causes this. We removed the index, it works fine. We are wondering the root cause, removing the index is not a solution for us. Any thoughts?. Thanks.

Sql Server 2005 Express Edition VS Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition

Hello..

I've installed Visual Basic 2005 express edition & tried to connect to SQL Server 2005 express edition. I noticed that VB2005 Express Edition doesn't have any OLEDB provider for SQL Server. The only OLEDB Provider is for M.Access. Is this correct? if so, what should i do if i want to connect SQL Server 2005 express edition with VB2005 express edition by using OLEDB connection type?

I really appreciate any respond from you guys.. Thank's and waiting for the good news..

Beginner Q: Pocket PC Access To SQL Server 2005

Feb 28, 2006

Hi,

I am a total beginner to Pocket PC, and a 2-month beginner to SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio 2005. I made a database Pillbox.mdf, and wrote a Windows Forms program to access it. It's really easy. I just added a Data Source, chose tables and Stored Procedures, and dragged them onto my forms. It automatically created adapter classes and a DataGrid for me.

Next, I wanted to do the same thing for Pocket PC. I did the same drag and drop thing, and was happy to see the empty DataGrid in the emulator (design-time) form. From here on, trouble. When I ran it, it said it could not connect.

So some questions:

1) Does my connection string have to change? It has 3 parts: machine name, database name, and security spec. It specifies my machine name. Is that ok? Is it known by the Pocket PC, or do I have to specify http something? Does my machine have to change any settings to become a "server"? It's just a standalone PC with no network. I understand the emulator chooses to pretend that it's not "on" my computer. Is the database name known by the Pocket PC? (Same type of question.) And is Windows authentication ok on a Pocket PC? Or must I create a name/password pair on SQL server?

2) When I went to modify my connection string, I noticed a setting to specify the Data source. For SQL Server 2005, it asks me for a dbo, but for SQL Server Mobile, it asks me for a *.sdf file. What type of file is this? Is there a way to generate this from my other database? Is it not possible to have the the Pocket PC app point to the same database as the Windows app? Oh... does the sdf represent the Pocket PC's local database? If so, then my question is just how to populate it. But I will also have to update the main database at some point. I guess I'm confused about how Pocket PC's are supposed to work.

3) Do I have to deploy SQL CE or something? I think I read that Visual Studio does it automatically. It's a bit hard reading blogs because many comments talk about things that are now contained in VS. One blog was talking about 7 dlls that need to be downloaded to the Pocket PC.

4) My application just has to get a table, store it on the Pocket PC, and allow the user to modify and update records. The bandwidth should be low, as the table is small and updates should not be frequent. Is this a reasonable design? What I am asking is if it's ok to have direct database access, or if I should package up the data in some custom format, and use a Web service to pass the data back and forth. I have read and understood articles why you should not pass a Dataset in a web service, but the point was just that web services can be interoperable, so why spoil that with MS-only Datasets. In my case, I just want to get this simple app up and running quickly.

Thanks in advance.

System.Data.ConstraintException Visual Basic 2005 Express / SQL 2005 Express

Aug 18, 2006

This problem only occurs after deployment, not when debugging. In the table I am having a problem with I have an ID field designated as the primary key with the identity increment set to 1 and the identity seed set to 1. There is no data in the table when deployed. I can add records to the datagridview control but when I try updating the dataset I get this error indicating that the ID field already has a value of 1 present. If I close the application and re-start it, the exception no longer occurrs when I update the dataset. I am including the code to update the tables incase something is wrong there. Any suggestions?

Visual Basic 2005 Express - SQL Problem

Nov 21, 2007

Hi all, I have a var called sEP which contains a number. The problem I have is calling that var during an SQL query within Visual Basic.  To test the update string I wrote the following query and simply told it to enter the text "Five Stars" on the row which contains the entry '1' in Episode Number column. It works fine. UPDATE JackBennySET Rating= 'Five Stars'
WHERE ([Episode Number]= '1') But how do I replace the '1' in the query with the var sEP (which will contain the actual number I want the query to run against)?I have tried various suggestions from sources including:UPDATE JackBenny SET Rating = 'Five Stars' WHERE [Episode Number] = '" + sEp + "'However, they all fail to update the database at all which makes me think the syntax is incorrect.Any help is very appreciated (I have been seeking help in various places for 2 days now) - I always send small paypal tips to people who help me on forums.

How To Apply SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 To The Version Of SQL Server 2005 Express Which Installs With Visual Studio 2005?

Aug 8, 2006

When I installed VS 2005, it installed the default version of SQL Server 2005 Express that ships with Visual Studio 2005 installer media.

How can apply SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 to update this existing instance?

Currently, if I run this query:

SELECT @@version

I get the following:

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1399.06 (Intel X86) Oct 14 2005 00:33:37 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Express Edition on Windows NT 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 2)

After applying SP1, I should get 9.00.2047.00.

Should I just go to this link and download & install the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP1:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/

Thank you,

SQL 2005 Process Growing Very Large Working With Visual Basic 6

Sep 25, 2006

We recently installed SQL server 2005 on a couple of our servers.  I use Visual Basic 6.0 at the moment and use ADO to connect to our various SQL servers.

I recently discovered on one of the new servers, that every time my programs runs, (every 4 minutes for 12 hours a day) the SQL process shown in task manager grows by 1-10 Megs.

The SQL process was at 776,912K when I rebooted this afternoon.  It started back up at 106,120K.

I am not doing anything differently than I did when my programs were talking to SQL 2000, and I have never seen this memory leak issue.  Is there something extra I need to do in SQL 2005 to finish/clear these SQL queries and not bog down SQL's memory?

An example of how I would connect and do a SQL transaction:

Dim cn as ADODB.Connection

Dim rs as ADODB.RecordSet

Set cn = New ADODB.Connection

Set rs = New ADODB.Connection

cn.Open strConnect

select1 = "select firstName, lastName from clients"
rs.Open select1, cn, adOpenKeyset, adLockOptimistic

If rs.EOF = False Then

    rs.AddNew

End If

rs!firstName = Trim(Text1(0))
rs!lastName = Trim(Text1(1))

rs.Update

rs.Close
cn.Close

At the end of the program's run I would:

Set cn = Nothing

Set rs = Nothing

Installing MS Visual Studio 2005 (PE). On Vista X64 (BE) Running MS SQL Server 2005 (DE) X64

Feb 10, 2008

Hi, I am running SQL Server 2005 x64 DE on Vista x64. I installed MS VS 2005 Pro. Edition. During the setup of VS, I did a custom install, un-checking the SQL Express addition box. After installation, I received errors that indicated the SQL Express did not install. Even though I do not have SQL Express installed on my machine, MS Update says that I need SQL Express SP2. My SQL DE is up to date with SP2 and MS Update indicates as "optional" that I need SQL SP2.

Is SQL Express a necessity for VS Pro? If not, why is MS Update indicating that I need SQL Express SP2? In addition, why is MS Update telling me I need SQL SP2 when it is already installed?

Note: I installed SQL SP2 manually, not through MS Update. This makes me believe that MS Update is not detecting it.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help,

Abel

Native Oracle SQL -&&> SQL Server 2005 CE .sdf File -&&> Using Visual Studio 2005?

May 23, 2007

I've got a table adapter that connects using an oracle data connector. In the adapter, I'm using native oracle SQL such as:

select TO_DATE(SUBSTR(TO_CHAR(weird_oracle_field),0,12),'YYYYMMDDHH24MI') as dt_added from oracle_data_table

There's also a CASE statement in there with some other data transformations.

Anyway, I want to take the results of that Oracle query and put the dataset into a SQL Server Compact Edition database - within an application that I'm creating in Visual Studio 2005.

For whatever reason, I can't seem to do anything like that in 'bulk' and there aren't any data migration tools that work with anything other than "full" SQL Server versions. My client doesn't support SQL Server, but I can deploy my app with SQL CE. I need a 'local' copy of the database (for several reasons) and just can't seem to figure out how to make this work.

I'm really going nuts. I feel like I'm soooo close when I see the data I want in the table adapter - but I can't seem to actually *move* the data over!!

Can anyone help?

thanks,

Jon

Visual Studio 2005 Unable To Connect To SQL Server Express 2005

May 26, 2008

Hi,
I have VS Pro 2005 and SQL Server Express 2005 installed on an XP Pro machine. When using VS 2005, in the 'Server Explorer' window I can see and attach to two SQL Server databases that I have set-up. But if I attempt to access the same databases from withn the 'Solution Explorer' window I get the following dialog box message,

"
Required Component Missing (Dialog box heading)

Connections to SQL Server Files (*.mdf) require SQL Server Express to function properly. Please verify the installation of the component or download from the URL: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=49251
"

I have uninstalled and then reinstalled both VS 2005 and SQL Server Express twice but it has helped.

I don't understand why I'm getting this error because all of the server configuration tools and connection utilities seem to work fine but VS say's that SQL Server Express is not installed.

Thanks,

P.S.
I had another application that required MSDE 2000A to be installed. When I removed the other application I also removed MSDE 2000A and that's when the problem began.

Creating A New Connection With Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition From Visual Studio 2005 IDE

Jul 25, 2007

Hello, How are you?
I have a problem when I try to create a new connection with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition from Visual Studio 2005 IDE. When I€™m going to choose the data source, the SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition provider doesn€™t appear in the list. I installed the SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition from this page http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=%2085E0C3CE-3FA1-453A-8CE9-AF6CA20946C3&displaylang=en. In the additional information says by installing SQLServerCE31-EN.msi installs the provider (System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll) in the GAC (global assembly cache) and registers the OLEDB provider (sqlceoledb30.dll). So, I don€™t understand why couldn€™t I create a new connection with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition from Visual Studio 2005 IDE?

I appreciate your help€¦
