Need Help W/ SELECT From One Table, One Field, Multiple Unique Records

Apr 22, 2006

I'm new to MS SQL and VB. I have a table with one field JOB_NAME containing 20 records. Out of that field I want to retrieve 6 of the 20 records into a pulldown menu. They are all unique text names like so:

Anna Smith
John Doe

etc. I did not see IDs listed for any of the names in the table when I looked.

There is no common denominator to the names that can be filtered in the SELECT statement, and the 6 that I want will need to be pulled out individually.

Is there a way to do this with a SELECT statement? I have not found much information about how to extract unique records out of a single field. Here's the statement I'm using which pulls all of them:

strSQL = "SELECT DISTINCT JOB_NAME AS Names FROM [WORKER_NAMES] WHERE JOB_NAME<>' ' ORDER BY JOB_NAME ASC"

This gives me the total list but I only want to bring back 6 of the 20 for the pulldown.

Is there a way to modify this statement to pull only the records that I want?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Select Multiple Records Into A Table

Jul 20, 2005

I am building an invoicing database. I have no problems searching fordue dates and generating the invoice header. The problem is generatingthe invoice detail. My customers may have more than one item that needs to go into theinvoice detail table. For example:customer #123 has 2 items that need to be placed into the detailtable.Rate 1 email accountRate 2 hosting accountI have to get both of these records into the detail table. When using the conventional method, I get something alongthe lines of" insert failed. more than one record was returned"-------INSERT INTO detailSELECT (SELECT max([id])FROM iheader),CustomerRates.custid,rates.Price, rates.nameFROM CustomerRates INNER JOIN Rates ON CustomerRates.Rateid = rates.IDWHERE NextBill > GETDATE()-------I have even considered a cursor to loop through the records but I cantmake it run properly. I am not crazy about the performance of cursorsanyway.Any aideas would be greatly apreciated.

SQL Server 2014 :: Add Multiple Records To Table (insert / Select)?

Jul 31, 2014

I am trying to add multiple records to my table (insert/select).

INSERT INTO Users
( User_id ,
Name
)
SELECT ( SELECT MAX(User_id) + 1
FROM Users
) ,
Name

But I get the error:

Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'PK_Users'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'dbo.Users'.

But I am using the max User_id + 1, so it can't be duplicate

This would insert about 20 records.

Why the error?

Selecting Records Where Part-field Is Unique

Aug 10, 2015

I have a very large CSV file containing name-and-address information which I am reading in a Visual Basic project using the Microsoft.JetOLEDB.4.0 provider.

The key field on which the CSV file is to be filtered is the PostCode field.  This is a UK-format PostCode "XXnn Nxx" where "XX" is one or more letters denoting a geographical area within the UK and "nn" is one or more characters (starting with at least one numeric digit) which when combined with the area code denotes a specific district within the geographical area.  My aim is to identify all the unique UK postal districts held within my address CSV file.

Because I do not know how to use SQL to filter on the partial contents of a database field I am presently reduced to extracting unique full PostCodes using "SELECT DISTINCT PostCode,City,County FROM [ADDRESSES.csv]" into a DataTable object, then sequentially reading that DataTable using the operation of a dictionary object to identify unique PostCode areas, to finally construct the DataTable I need.

Is it possible in SQL to select records where the value of a varying number of characters before a space character in a given (PostCode) field is unique?

Query On Unique Records With Multiple Criteria

Oct 19, 2013

I'm fairly new in SQL. Been trying for months to create the right script for this particular case but still cannot give me 100% result as required.

SCENARIO :

I am required to query from 2 tables for those unique record that meets both conditions below:-
1. Status is 1 @ max (trans_id), paychnl = CC
2. Status is 2 @ max (trans_id), paychnl = A or B

FYR, 2 tables and respective columns to query are as below:-
table PTFF --> col ID, TRANS_ID,TRANSDATE,EFFDATE,TRANSCODE
table CHFF --> col STATUS,PAYCHNL

FYI, status refers to the paychnl method status:-
==> 1 means the current paychnl method
==> 2 means the previous paychnl method

paychnl method can be multiple because it will be defined as 2 for all the histories' paychnl chosen earlier, but 1 should only be unique as it is the latest paychnl chosen for each unique ID. however, it may appear more than once when it's taking those in earlier TRANSDATE, so here we would need the max trans_id as it will show the latest updated TRANSDATE.

Apart from that, I need only those most recent paychnl to be A or B and the latest paychnl is CC so, this been indicated by the same max trans_id for the same ID.

Aft trying so many times on this MAX command but failed to get any result, I only managed to come up to this part only. please refer below:-

table PTFF --> col ID, TRANS_ID,TRANSDATE,EFFDATE,TRANSCODE
table CHFF --> col STATUS,PAYCHNL

SELECT DISTINCT PTFF.TRANSCODE,PTFF.ID,PTFF.TRANS_ID,PTFF.TRANSDATE,PTFF.EFFDATE, CHFF.STATUS,CHFF.PAYCHNL

FROM DBO.PTFF PTFF
JOIN DBO.CHFF CHFF
ON CHFF.ID = PTFF.ID
WHERE
PTFF.TRANSDATE BETWEEN 130501 AND 130831
AND PTFF.TRANSCODE='T522'
AND (CHFF.STATUS=1 AND CHFF.PAYCHNL='CC' OR (CHFF.STATUS=2 AND (CHFF.PAYCHNL='A' OR CHFF.PAYCHNL='B')))

However, the script above returns :-

1. All those records with STATUS 1 regardless paychnl is A or B in most recent status 2,
2. Expected results also appear ==> 1 same ID with status 1 while paychnl=CC and status 2 while paychnl=A or B
3. Also duplicates of expected results but for different TRANSDATE and not at MAX TRANS_ID

A Table With A Unique Field

Jul 10, 2007

Hello,

I would like to store some frequently asked questions in a database.
As those questions/answers could be translated in several languages, I was thinking of using two tables :

The first table would contain a unique field : the key wich is an id for each faq.

The second table would contain those fields :
FAQ_ID : foreign key
LANG : language
QUESTION : the question translated in the good language.
ANSWER : the answer translated in the good language.

What I find embarrassing, is that first table just contains a unique field : the id. But it allows :
- to have a table in which a line correspond to an object. It is convenient for object relational mapping.
- it is more evolutionary. If, in the future, I have to add some statistics that concerns a faq, I will have the possibility to store them in the first table, avoiding in this way to duplicate data.

But, one more time, I find a bit embarrassing having a table with a unique field...

What is your opinion about that ?

Thank you in advance for any suggestion.

Append Only Unique Records In SQL Table

Nov 23, 2007

I have a stored procedure that appends data from a temp table to a destination table.  The procedure is called from an aspx web page. The destination table has an index on certain fields so as to not allow duplicates.
The issue I'm having is if the imported data contains some records that are unique and some that would be duplicate, the procedure stops and no records are appended. How can I have this procedure complete it's run, passing over the duplicates and appending the unique records? Since the data is in a temp table (which gets deleted after each append) should I run some sort of 'find duplicates' query, and delete the duplicates from the temp table first, then append to the destination table?
Thanks in advance.SMc

Unique Counter Field In A Table - Best Way?

Oct 11, 2005

I need to to have a table that has a counter field (used to generate an id code for a record).  This is not the primary id for the field but just a counter to label a record in another table, similar to a registration code for an event.  This is a sequential counter that will start 1 and go up on each new record inserted into other tables.  What I want to do is be able to query this counter table to get the next valid number and increment the count for the next time.  This is a multi user web app so needs to prevent duplicate use of same number. How best should this be handled?  A transaction to query and update the field?

Hello, everyone:

I have two tables with some duplicated records like,

ZZZTestTable:
D_IDC11C22C33

I wand to get the unique records by SELECT / JOIN statement. Now I used a query,

SELECT * FROM ZZZTest t
INNER JOIN ZZZTestTable tt
ON t.Col1=tt.Col11 AND t.Col2=tt.Col22 AND t.Col3 = tt.Col33

and got the records like,

Any suggestion will be great appreciated.

Concatenating Field For Multiple Records

May 30, 2008

Quick question. What I'm trying to do is concatenate a field for multiple records (hope that is worded in an understandable manner). Here's an example:

ID.....Code
5......33
5......23

ID.....Code...Result
5......33.....33 23
5......23.....33 23

I need the code to get the Result field. I know the code if you were to find the sum, min, max, etc...

(SELECT SUM(CODE)
FROM Table
WHERE ID = Table.ID) AS Result

But I don't know how to write it so it will combine strings.

Multiple Records Tied To Foreign Key Field?

Jun 6, 2008

I'm a total newb to SQL so I apologize if I butcher the description of what I'm looking to do :) Hopefully the example makes more sense. Is it possible for a single record in 1 table to contain relationships to several records in a different table?

What I've got so far is 2 tables - Hardware and Software, with ID Specifying primary keys HardwareID and SoftwareID respectively. the hardware records are for computer details and the software obviously are for programs. What I need to be able to do is pull up a hardware record and be able to see what software is installed on it, and vice versa pull up a software record to see which computers it's installed on. The problem I'm running into is that a computer can have multiple programs installed on it and a program can be installed on multiple computers, so I don't know how to create that relationship to account for that.

What I'd like to see is in the Hardware table a column for SoftwareID that has a foreign key relationship to the SoftwareID field in the Software Table, and vice versa....My question though is is that possible to do and have potentially multiple separate records it links to from that same column field? I might have a computer with say Windows XP Pro, Office 2003 Standard, Adobe Acrobat 8 and a proprietary rate calculator program that i need each to be displayed with their details when I open that computer's record. Or on the software side if I need to see which computers a license is already installed on then I want to make sure I can pull up the full list of computers.

And finally if what I'd like to do isn't possible as I described it...any recommendations for a better way?

Thanks all for the help!

Select Records That Do Not Duplicate On A Certain Field.

Mar 15, 2004

I am looking for some help in pulling certain people out of a table

This is the basic setup of my table

PK ID NAME MEETING
1 11111 Joe CLASS98
2 22222 Jane CLASS98
3 33333 Bob CLASS98
4 11111 Joe CLASS04
5 22222 Jane CLASS04
6 44444 Sally CLASS04

What I am wanting to do is Select only the people who attended CLASS98 but didn't attend CLASS04

I could just remove the CLASS04 people by sorting if I could just return the rows that do not duplicate the ID and meeting is either CLASS04 or CLASS98

Either way would get me to my goal.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks

Select Many Records Into 1 Comma Seperated Field.

Oct 30, 2006

I want to pull out some information for documenting my user accounts.I want to be able to show all of the users and what companies those users have access to.

The table which stores the company information lists it in multiple rows, so there will be many results for each user
user -- companyid
johnd -- 2
johnd -- 5
johnd -- 1

I want to select this into one record so it will show up like this
user -- companies
johnd -- 2,5,1

The only way I know how to do this would be with a sub-query that uses a cursor to loop through & dump it into one string value, and then output the string value to the field. This seems extremely inefficient for such a seemingly simple task.

Can somebody help me out here?

Group / Union Statement - Pull Unique Records From A Large Table

Sep 22, 2014

I am trying to use SQL to pull unique records from a large table. The table consists of people with in and out dates. Some people have duplicate entries with the same IN and OUT dates, others have duplicate IN dates but sometimes are missing an OUT date, and some don’t have an IN date but have an OUT date.

What I need to do is pull a report of all Unique Names with Unique IN and OUT dates (and not pull duplicate IN and OUT dates based on the Name).

I have tried 2 statements:

#1:
SELECT DISTINCT tblTable1.Name, tblTable1.INDate
FROM tblTable1
WHERE (((tblTable1.Priority)="high") AND ((tblTable1.ReportDate)>#12/27/2013#))
GROUP BY tblTable1.Name, tblTable1.INDate
ORDER BY tblTable1.Name;

#2:
SELECT DISTINCT tblTable1.Name, tblTable1.INDate
FROM tblTable1
WHERE (((tblTable1.Priority)="high") AND ((tblTable1.ReportDate)>#12/27/2013#))
UNION SELECT DISTINCT tblTable1.Name, tblTable1.INDate
FROM tblTable1
WHERE (((tblTable1.Priority)="high") AND ((tblTable1.ReportDate)>#12/27/2013#));

Both of these work great… until I the OUT date. Once it starts to pull the outdate, it also pulls all those who have a duplicate IN date but the OUT date is missing.

Example:

NameINOUT
John Smith1/1/20141/2/2014
John Smith1/1/2014(blank)

I am very new to SQL and I am pretty sure I am missing something very simple… Is there a statement that can filter to ensure no duplicates appear on the query?
