Need To Capture Actual Data In Row On Error To Flat File

Sep 18, 2007

Let me preface by saying I am not very familiar with SSIS.

Ideally, since the Transfer SQL Server Objects task can do all tables, I would like to use it to copy only data from one server to a new server that has the tables pre-created. When I encounter any kind of error, in addition to the error information provided by SSIS, I also need the actual row data.

If using the Transfer Object task can't do that, how would I loop through all the tables on an OLEDB source and capture the same error information on the destination? I figured out how to do the Data Flow a table with a redirect error output but that does not give me the actual row data.

Flat File Connection Manager Throws Error When A Column Gets Added To The Flat File

Dec 27, 2006

Hi,

I have a situation where a tab limited text file is used to populate a sql server table.

The tab limited text file comes from a third party vendor. There are fixed number of columns we need to export to the sql server table. However the third party may add colums in the text file. Whenenver the text file has an added column (which we dont need to import) the build fails since the flat file connection manager does not create the metadata for it again. The problem goes away  where I press the button "Reset Columns" since it builds the metadata then. Since we need to build the tables everyday we cannot automate it using SSIS because the metadata does not change automatically. Is there a way out in SSIS?

Potential Loss Of Data Error On Flat File Source

Nov 19, 2007

I'm getting a very strange potential loss of data error on my flat file source in the data flow. The flat file is fixed width and the column in question is defined as numeric [DT_NUMERIC]. The transform runs great if this column IS NOT A ZERO. As soon as a zero value is found, I get the error. It errors on the flat file source, so I haven't been able to use a data viewer to see what's going on.

Please Help!?

Thanks,
Scott Mescall

Extract Column Data From Flat File Error Output

Dec 10, 2007

Hi Friend,

I am stuck with a problem and need your help. As we know, all columns that go to error flow of flat file source connection are displayed as a single column e.g. FlatFileSourceErrorOutputColumn, but my requirement is to extract the first column value from this FlatFileSourceErrorOutputColumn, my data is dilimeted by "|" pipe operator. I have created a script component to deal with this. However if we take FlatFileSourceErrorOutputColumn column as input column in script component, it comes as BLOB data. I wrote below code in transformation script component to extract BLOB data from column in string form and then do a Left function search to take first column out.

When I am running this script component I am getting '??????????' question marks as a result in Row.Pname.

Can anyone please help me understand if I am doing anything wrong in this script or suggest a better way to take the data out?

I appreciate your help.

Public Overrides Sub Input0_ProcessInputRow(ByVal Row As Input0Buffer)

'

'

Dim Error_Data As String

Dim Column_1 As String

Dim Len As Integer

Dim Buffer As Byte()

Buffer = Row.FlatFileSourceErrorOutputColumn.GetBlobData(0, CInt(Row.FlatFileSourceErrorOutputColumn.Length))

Error_Data = System.Text.Encoding.Unicode.GetString(Buffer)

Len = Error_Data.IndexOf("|")

Column_1 = Left(Error_Data, Len - 1)

Row.Pname = Column_1

End Sub

Thanks,
Kul

Flat File -&&> Table: Error Using I/E Wiz, Date..could Not Be Converted..potential Loss Of Data

Jul 16, 2007

The following error is encountered when importing a delimited flat file with date of fomat "dd.mm.yyyy"

Error: 0xC02020A1 at Data Flow Task, Source - DCDtest_xpt [1]: Data conversion failed. The data conversion for column "value date" returned status value 2 and status text "The value could not be converted because of a potential loss of data.".

This was when I manually built the package.

I get the same error when using the Import/Export wizard

I am even using the "suggest types" button and have tried sampling the default number of rows (?200) and also 2000.

The type it suggests is DT_DATE.

But reading the BOL, this would appear to be the wrong type:

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms141036.aspx (obviously the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing)

seems to indicate that

DT_DBTIMESTAMP

is the correct value

(I cannot believe that they have different datatypes in SSIS than in SQL. I can't believe for a minute this is for all the hundreds of thousands of Oracle users who obviously switched to SSIS when they saw what a high quality product it is.)

I tried other DT_... values but no dice.

Can anyone help?

I always thought that Classic ASP was the worst product I've ever worked with from the Microsoft stable, but I was wrong.

I am fed up of having to post on this board (no wonder it is so 'popular')

Talking to peers, reading books, googling nearly always enables me to figure out a problem with any application I have ever used, but SSIS breaks the mould in sheer crapness and the weirdnes and unfathomability of its cryptic errors,.

Rant over (for today)

Transact SQL :: Printing Report - Capture Actual Pages In A Duplex Printing Job

Aug 10, 2015

So I have been asked by our sustainability person to create report from our printing data that actually shows the number of pieces of paper used. This is easy enough for single-sided printing, but when printing in duplex the software does not take into account that 3 printing pages actually equates to 2 pieces of paper. I know this sounds simple, but say I have a print job record that looks like this:

Submitted printed total_pages duplex
8/10/2015 8/10/2015 42 1

This is a print jobs that if done correctly is actually 21 pages( duplex printing). If the job is say total_pages =5 I cant just divide by 2 because its actually using 3 pieces of paper ( yes they are wanting this data don't ask why). How can I adjust some sql to accurately depict 5 pages, front and back, as 3 pieces of paper?

Flat File Connector Stops Processing File On Empty Row And Generates Fatal Error

Dec 27, 2007

Here's a really annoying problem. Let's say you have a text file with 2 million rows.Delimiters all look good and rows are previewed well but the file has a missing row at say lin 1234567 - way deep in the file. When SSIS encounters the blank row, an error is raised and processing on the file STOPS! I verified this in by checking the SSIS log and have even developed an error routine to notify me via email when the error occurs (really cool if I do say so myself ). The main problem still remains - how to resume processing from the point of failure in the file? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Capture Data From Excel File And Load Into Staging Table - Annual Count

Jul 31, 2013

I am working on an HR project and I have one final component that I am stuck on.

I have an Excel File that is loaded into a folder every month.

I have built a package that captures the data from the excel file and loads it into a staging table (transforming a few bits of data).

I then combine it with another table in a view.

I have another package that loads that view into a Master table and I have added a Slowly Changing Dimension so that it only updates what has been changed. (it’s a table of all employees, positions, hire dates, term dates etc).

Our HR wants to have this data in a report (with charts and tables) and they wanted it to be in a familiar format. So I made a data connection with Excel loading the data into a series of pivot tables.

I have one final component that i cant seem to figure out. At the end of every year I need to capture a count of all Active Employees and all Termed employees for that year. Just a count.

So the data will look like this.

|Year|HistoricalHC|NumbTermedEmp|
|2010|447 |57 |
|2011|419 |67 |
|2012|420 |51 |

The data is in one table labeled [EEMaster]. To test the count I have the following.

SELECT COUNT([PersNo]) AS HistoricalHC
FROM [dbo].[EEMaster]
WHERE [ChangeStatus] = 'Current' AND [EmpStatusName] = 'Active'

this returns the HistoricalHC for 2013 as 418.

SELECT COUNT([PersNo]) AS NumbOfTermEE
FROM [dbo].[EEMaster]
WHERE [ChangeStatus] = 'Current' AND [EmpStatusName] = 'Withdrawn' AND [TermYear] = '2013'

This returns the Number of Termed employees for 2013 as 42.

I have created a table to report from called [dbo.TORateFY] that I have manually entered previous years data into.

|Year|HistoricalHC|NumbTermedEmp|
|2010|447 |57 |
|2011|419 |67 |
|2012|420 |51 |

I need a script (or possibly a couple of scripts) that will add the numbers every year with the year that the data came from.

(so on Dec 31st this package will run and add |2013|418|42| to the next row, and so on.

SSIS Load Data - Capture Error

Jul 24, 2015

I want to create a SSIS package as follows

Conditions
If there are about 100 records in text file, if there is an error at 43 and at 67 record respectively , it should capture 43 and 67 record in failure folder and remaining 98 records , should be processed

1) Successful record into table and move the success record from the folder
to new path say( Success folder) (98 records to table)
2) Unsuccessful records to new path (Failure folder) (2 lines )
3) Error message to capture the failed records and store them in another folder(Error log) (2 line failure information)

While writing the 3rd condition to error log table , it has to point out the record which is failed for what reason, say it may be due to invalid data type for column 10 for 43 record, and incorrect syntax error at 67 record.

Unable To Edit Pre-defined Flat File Connection Manager Properties In The Flat File Destination Editor

Aug 24, 2007

Hi,

I am testing SSIS and have created a Flat File Destination. I defined the Flat File Connection as New for the first time and it worked fine. Now, I would like to go back and modify the Flat File Connection in the Flat File Destination Editor, but it allows only to create a New connection rather allowing me to edit the existing one. For testing, I can go back and create a new connection, but if my connection had 50-100 columns then it would be an issue to re-create it from scratch.

Did someone else faced this issue?

Thanks,
AQ

SSIS - Data Flow To Flat File - Insert At Start Of File

Oct 24, 2007

Hi all,

In a foreachloop, I am inserting records into a flat file which is working fine. But the thing is that as the file grows, it takes longer for it to locate the EOF(End of File) of the flat file so as to insert the records.

I have around 70-100 lines written to the file at each loop and there are more than 20k records to be looped. wihich means that at the end I should be having 1400k - 20000k line in the text file.

One solution would be to insert the records at the start of the file itself so that it does not has to lookup the EOF each time before writting.

Another would be to generate separate files and then merge it.

Any idea how can this can be done?

Beside this I have to zip the file and then SFTP to a given address.

Any suggestion or help would be welcome.

File Does Not Exist Error While Renaming A Flat File

May 22, 2008

Hi All,

We have a SSIS package which is accessing a remote Windows file share location.
The package first moves the file from folder-1 to folder-2 and also renames the file during this process.
Then the package reads the file (using a flat file connection FF_SRC) from folder-2 and renames it again after processing it successfully.

The permissions given to the user executing the package on folder-2 are: Read+Write+Modify+List folder contents.

We are facing an error:

Code SnippetFile or directory "Z:folder-2XYZ.txt" represented by connection "FF_SRC" does not exist.

We are getting the above error when the SSIS package is trying to rename the file the second time in folder-2.

However, the file exists in folder-2.

The OS is Windows 2000 Server SP4.

Any ideas why this could be happening and how it could be resolved?

Best Regards,
Avnip

Flat File Source Error Output Conversion Error With UNICODE Files

i have a weird situation here, i tried to load a unicode file with a flat file source component, one of file lines has data like any other line but also contains the character "ÿ" which i can't see or find it and replace it with empty string, the source component parses the line correctly but if there is a data type error in this line, the error output for that line gives me this character "ÿ" instead of the original line.

simply, the error output of flat file source component fail to get the original line when the line contains hidden "ÿ".

i hope you can help me with issue.

Exported Flat File Data Will Not Import To Same Table Without Extensive Data-type Manipulation

Jul 13, 2007

I'm moving data between identical tables and have to use a flat file as an intermediary. I thought: "No problem, SSIS can do a quick export to a file, then move the file to another server, then use SSIS to import the data to the new server."

Seems simple, right?

I'm hitting all sorts of surprising data conversion errors. I used the export wizard to create the export package. This works fine. However using the same flat file definition, the import package fails -- even when I have no destination. That is I have just one data flow task that contains only one control: the Flat File source. When I run the package the flat file definition fails with data type conversion and truncation errors. One of the obvious errors is for boolean types. The SQL field is a bit, SSIS defined the column as DT_BOOL, the output of the data are literal text values "TRUE" and "FALSE". So SSIS converts a sql datatype of bit to "TRUE" and "FALSE" on export, but can't make the reverse conversion on import?

Does anyone else find this surprising? I would expect that what SSIS exports, it can import given all the same table and flat file definitions. Is SSIS the wrong tool to do such simple bulk copies? I'd like to avoid using BCP because this process will need to run automatically within SQL Agent so we can leverage all the error tracking and system monitoring.

Flat File Source Error

Feb 8, 2008

i am importing a file using the Flat File Data Flow Source, it works fine but seems to miss data records every so often (not entire rows, just records inside the rows). The file has 149 columns and usually has around 15,000 to 20,000 rows.

For example, this is a sample of the input:
AccountNum, CancelDate, CancelReason
123~2/2/08~ADC
345~2/1/08~CCC
789~2/5/08~CRC

After the Flat File Source imports the file I get back:
AccountNum, CancelDate, CancelReason
123~2/2/08~ADC
345~2/1/08~
789~2/5/08~CRC

has anyone ever seen this or heard of this happening. It is usually the same column that misses records and this only happens when it runs from a job (in debug mode it always works fine).

Converting Flat File To SQL2005 Table (Flat File From H***)

Feb 11, 2008

First, a couple of important bits of information. Until last week, I had never touched SISS, and therefore, I know very little about it. I just never had the need to use it...until now. I was able to convert my first 3 flat files to SQL2005 tables by right clicking on "SISS Package" and choosing "SISS Import and Export Wizard". That is the extent of my knowledge! So please, please, please be patient with me and be as descriptive as possible.

I thought I could attach some sample files to this post, but it doesn't look like I can. I'll just paste the information below in two separate code boxes. The first code box is the flat file specifications and the second one is a sample single line flat file similar to what I'm dealing with (the real flat file is over 2 gigs).

My questions are below the sample files.

As you can see, each entry could have any number of records and multiples of some of the record types, with one exception, every entry must have a "01" record and can only have one "01" record. Oh, and each record has a length of 400.

I need to get this information into a SQL 2005 database so I can create a front end for accessing the data. Originally, I wanted one line for each account and have null values listed for entries that don't have a specific record. Now that I've looked at the data again, that doesn't look like a good idea. I think a better way to do it would be to create 5 different tables, one for each record type. However, records 2 through 5 don't have anything I can make a primary key. So here are my questions...

Is it possible to make 5 tables from this one file, one table for each of the record types?

If so, can I copy the Account number in record 01, position 13-19 in each of the subsequent record types (that way I could link the tables as needed)?

Can this be done using the SISS Import and Export Wizard to create the package? If not, I'm going to need some very basic step by step instructions on how to create the package.

Is SISS the best way to do this conversion or is there another program that would be better to use?
I know this is a huge question and I appreciate the help of anyone who boldly decides to help me! Thank you in advance and I welcome anyone's suggestions!

Move Flat File When Error Occurs

Mar 12, 2008

I Have a data flow task inside ForEachLoop.

Inside that dataflow, I was transfering data from a flat file to SQL Server. Now, When error occurs, I want to move that particular file to another location and proceed with the next file. I can't use file system task inside data flow . How can i achieve this ? Is there any other way other than Script-Task (Here script task will be complex thing as of my understanding).

Any solutions ?

Flat File Source - Continue On Error?

Oct 20, 2007

Hi

I have a CSV file which sometimes contains the odd CSV error, for this reason the odd row throws an error.

If I have a clean CSV file my SSIS package works great, but I am having problems getting the package to continue past the rows in the file that throw errors.

How do I :

Get the package to continue on error, I have tried playing with the Propagate Variable with no joy

Add an Error event, which will capture the error and log it to a SQL table or File Destination?
Any help will be great!

Thank you

Exporting SQL Data To A Flat File

Mar 19, 2002

SQL 6.5
NT 4.3

Can someone assist me with the following....

1. I am attempting to export data from a SQL DB (single table using a query) to a "flat file".
2. I would then like to take this "flat file" and import the data into a different SQL DB (same schema structure as first DB).

Unfortunately this has to be done in two steps.

Thank you for your help.

Append Data To A Flat File

Nov 20, 2007

Hello,

I was wondering if there was a way for me to append data to a flat file. The reason why i ask this is because i need to create a header for the report that i am exporting.

The way i imagined this working would to be create a dts that would export the header information to a flat file and the create another dts to export the report data and appensd it to the same file that the header dts created. This might not be the correct approach so i was hoping i could get some guidance of how i can accomplish this.

I am using SQL Server 2000.

Thank you!

Get Header Data Of Flat File

Jul 4, 2007

hi everyone!

i am currently creating a package which involves getting data from CSV files. i can successfully get the data from the files, my problem is, i need to get data from the header of the CSV files. i am currently skipping the header rows. the format of the CSV files is as follows:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Date, 20070704
Store Code, storeCode1

data row.....
data row.....
data row.....
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

technically, i also need the date from the header row, but since it is also indicated in the data rows, i have no problem with that. what i need is the Store Code, which is not indicated on the data rows. i need to store the data in a database in the following format:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
StoreCode Date column1 column2 column3 ......
storeCode1 20070704 ...
storeCode2 20070704 ...
storeCode3 20070704 ...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

any idea how SSIS can handle this? thanks a lot!
