Need To Create And Access A SQL Server Database That Will Reside On An External Hard Drive.

Apr 9, 2007

I need to create a SQL server database and add some tables to it. Then access it with a C# application. The problem is that the new SQL server database and it's tables must reside on an external hard drive. How do I point SQL server to this external drive, so that I can create a database on this drive and then create tables and access data on it?

Reconfigure NT Hard Drive

hi, I have NT server which has drive c: 500 MB and drive d has 44 GB.

I know that the person who set up this server did not give enough space to the c drive, here is the problem. I am running sql server 7.0 which has 30 GB of data in the d drive. I need to reconfigure the NT hard drive so I can allocate 2 GB for C drive and 42 GB for D drive.

What is the best, safe method to accomplish this task.

Hard Drive Status

Jul 17, 2003

Hi,
I have ran
1. xp_fixeddrives and got the result
drive MB free
----- -----------
C 1708
D 16311
2. I ran Backup Wizard in EM and able to see only above drives

3. But if ran backup in EM able to see more than 10 Drives(like C,D,H,I,J,M,N and etc).
Why I can able to see those difference?.
How do I find out exactly how many drives are there in this server without directly going to that server?.
I appreciated your valuable answere.

Formatting The Hard Drive

May 18, 2004

I was wondering if anyone played around with changing the allocation unit size when formatting the hard drive the SQL server is running on. I would think that setting it higher to account for the larger size of the database files would help, but I'm not sure.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Hard Drive Setup Question

Feb 2, 2007

Hi guys,

I have a general question. Would SQL server have slower performance if you placed the ldf or mdf files on a dynamic drive setup or should it always be basic? I noticed that a server had 2 dynamic drives and the log files and mdf files are located on these drives. Usually I see all the drives as basic not dynamic. Does this even matter?

For example I want to backup to device mdtnts_prod02LM2BackupNameBack.DAT.

Hard Drive Defragmentation Opinions

May 9, 2008

I'm wondering what other people do in regards to running hard drive defragmentation programs on SQL Server 2005 servers (assume 64-bit and Windows 2003). From what I can tell the most common opinions are:

1. Don't defragment because it doesn't help and it can cause problems.
2. Use Diskeeper
3. Use the built-in Windows defragmenter

Other respected defragmented programs are PerfectDisk, O&O Defrag, JkDefrag, and Contig.

What is your hard drive defragmentation strategy?

Hard Drive Trashing After SP2 + KB934458

Apr 5, 2007

Hi. Has anyone else had any problem with their SQL Server 2005 going nuts after installing the SP2 + the above hotfix?

We reboot the SQL Server and as soon as SQL receives a command of any sort, the SCSI RAID 5 hard drives light up and start trashing. Therefore every query and even Windows response time is painfully slow or fails to respond. When we look at the Activity Monitor and sp_who2 there is a process running a Select Into from Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio using the sa account from the last database name in our system. So we can't kill the process as it says "Cannot use KILL to kill your own process. Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 6104)".

The last Transact-SQL command from this process is:
create table #tmpDBCCinputbuffer ((Event Type) nvarchar(512),
[Parameters] int, [Event Info] nvarchar(512))
insert into #tmpDBCCinputbuffer exec ('DBCC INPUTBUFFER(56)')
select [Event Info] from #tmpDBCCinputbuffer

The only other issue I should mention is that we had to uninstall and reinstall SQL Server yesterday as SP2 only half installed. The SP2 install log indicated that SQL SP1 wasn't in a good state as we previously (3 months ago) performed an upgrade from Windows 2000 Server to Windows 2003 R2 Server.

Our other 3 Windows 2003 R2 Servers which were a clean install of both Windows and SQL are running fine.

I've been insisting that we do a new clean Windows and SQL install, but the other team members insist that it's been fine until we installed SQL Server SP2.

So can anyone provide and help or evidence to say who is right either way?

Thanks.

Need Help Approximating How Much Hard Drive Space I Need For My DB Table.

May 12, 2007

In our SQL Server database we will have a table that will be populated with about 2000 recordsper day. That is 2000 records per day for 5 days per week. Currently the computer we are using has about  50 gigabytesof available hard drive space on it. We are concerned that maybe we will need a bigger hard drive, based solely on the number of records entered into this table per day. The problem is I don'tknow how to calculate how much hard drive space we need. I think I read that using varchar, sql server 2005 really optimizes a database. Here is a typical example of data in ourdatabase. I put dots on three lines between the first and last sample record to justillustrate that there are many records in between.
Basically we only need 8 months of data at a time in the table and then we can purgerecords older than 8 months. Can someone help me approximate how much hard drive space I might need for 8 months of data, given the following sample record in the database?
Sample: -->34.5               4.08        10.6       .0012
Sample Table in my DB just for illustration:
(PPsquare inch)  (Diameter)  (Weight gm)     (coeffOfSatFriction)
34.5                      4.08            10.6                .0012...21.7               3.54        6.22         .019

Hard Drive Crashed. Master && User Db Mdf && Ldf Files Lost

Jan 31, 2006

Hello.

One of our hard drives has crashed and as a result we have lost our master mdf/ldf & user db mdf/ldf files. It's not that a critical system by any means, but if the hard drive crashes and the master mdf/ldf files & user db mdf/ldf are lost, is there any way of restoring the system?

I'm thinking we probably need to re-install Enterprise Manager completely, and re-install the user db from a backup.

Any advice/suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Hi,

I've downloaded the sql server 2005 management studio express executable to my second hard drive, as there is no room on my main drive

However, when I try to install, the program shows me both drives, and shows that there is not enough room on my main drive, but it does not allow me to change the installation to my second drive.

I have previously installed the main sql express product to my second drive with visual studio. There's loads of room.

Can anyone give me a clue as to why this might be happening.

External Drive, SCSI, Same Controller...

Feb 14, 2006

I have a guy who wants me to move his databases to an external drive. Hardware is my major weakness and I usually think I am McGyver when I can swap out a RAM board in my home PC. Whenever guys in the office start talking hardware, I go hide in the bathroom.

I know I have read that this is a very bad idea in some book and a few message board threads. This guy is going to use SCSI and it is going to be attached to the same controller as his other disks. I know he should have a battery backup for the drive especially if it employs write caching and that it should be formatted to NTFS and not FAT32.

I googled echnettedBOLedMSDNed this for 2 hours yesterday because I remember reading something about disc controllers and external drives and SQL Server being a recipe for disaster but I could not find anything to back me up.

Any words of wisdom or advice?

SqlserverExpress With External E-sata Drive???

If I have a sqlserver express database (very simple, 3 tables) where I have installed sqlserver express on my main internal "C" drive but changed the data files location to an external fast E-sata drive, my question is whether I can use an identical computer with an identical copy of sqlserver express installed, and the database tables etc set up the same, to access and use the same data as the first, assuming of course that I disconnect the e-sata drive from the first computer and plug it in to the second one??? Will this work?? Im trying to quickly get a small but critical data aquisition system back up with minimal loss of time and data if the first computer fails. O.S. is windows xp.

Stored Procedure Can't Access Table On External Database

Mar 6, 2005

Hi

I have created a .net application using visual studio .net and sql server destop edition on my pc. I have exported the database tables and stored procedures and imported them into a Sql Server database on a web hosting service. The web host does not allow me to access this database directly through visual studio .net.

My connection string to the external database works ok and I can access my stored procedures through my web pages. I know they accept parameters and that I can receive Return Values from them. However, whenever I try to access any of the tables on the external database through a stored procedure, I get a sqlException saying that the table cannot be found (Invalid object name 'UserList').

I have created a text type command which selects data from one of the tables and this runs through without any errors. I have also managed to Insert a row onto one of the external tables also by using a text type command. My only problem seems to be with commands using stored procedures.

Just in case this is the problem - the owner of the table/procedures on my desktop is shown as dbo but on the external database the owner of the tables is shown as [domainname].co.uk_dbuser while the stored procedures owner is still dbo.

Example of stored procedure on external database:

/****** Object: Stored Procedure dbo.AddUser Script Date: 01/03/2005 21:10:06 ******/
CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.AddUser
(
@Username Varchar(20),
@Password Varchar(20)
)
AS
(
Select User_ID From UserList
Where User_Username = @Username
)
GO

Have tried changing dbo.AddUser to [domain].co.uk_dbuser.Adduser but this would not save because there were too many full-stops!

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am completely stuck.

Create Database On Map Network Logical Drive

Oct 13, 2000

In 6.5 , I was NOT able to use mapped network drive for new database
device if the MSSQLSERVER service is running under local system account,
but if I changed it to using a domain a/c which has the authority to
create files on mapped drive, I was able to do it.

But if I tried it in 7.0, it never work and got msg:
Server: Msg 5105, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Device activation error. The physical file name 'e:est2.mdf' may be
incorrect.
Server: Msg 1802, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
CREATE DATABASE failed. Some file names listed could not be created. Check
previous errors.

Is it something that's normal for 6.5 and 7.0 ????
i.e. we can only create databases on LOCAL drives ?
I am just thinking of in case we run of space locally, we can temporarily
make use of remote mapped network drive. (say at time of upgrading)

Any one has this experience ?

Unexpected Error From External Database Driver (MS Access Linked Table)

Oct 19, 2006

OS: Windows XP (SP2)
App: MS Access 2003 (SP2)
DB: MS SQL 2000 (SP4, 2040)

User is using MS Access linked table to query database (using ODBC). User can open the query in MS Access. However when the user goes to export the data to MS Excel format, the user receives the error message:

"Unexpected Error from External Database Driver (22)."

A trace on the db, reveals that the user process is attempting to log in to the server as 'Admin'. However, when the query with the linked table is first opened, the user is prompted for username/password (non Windows authentication).

Any ideas? I googled and found some stuff, but nothing directly related and most of what I found was supposedly fixed with SP1.

Any help appreciated. I am not an Access guru.

External Access To SQL Server

Jul 3, 2006

Hello,

I'm not sure whether this is right section to post this. It seems the most relevant one to me. (Please point me in the right direction if it is not).

I am a programmer/web developer for a medium sized organisation in the financial industry (in Australia). Obviously being in the finance industry, we have very strict guidelines and access when it comes to security. We are currently in the process of converting our website to use a SQL Server database (instead of MS Access which we have been using for years). In the past, we have accessed our web database via SFTP as it was only an Access file. Now that we are converting to SQL Server, we will still need access to our database (which is on a server hosted externally). It seems a bit silly (and even bizarre) to me to consider trying to access a SQL Server database via SFTP (as that, to me, defeats the purpose of some of its security features), but is it even possible?

My security guys here will only allow me to access the external server that hosts our website/database via SFTP (on a machine that is outside our network, so any files that I wish to update on our website I need to copy over via USB or whatever). If I am not able to get into the SQL Server administrator program to change our database via SFTP, is there someway that I can "drop" a changed copy of our database into a directory somewhere that SQL Server can "pick up"?

Am I making sense?

Many thanks,

Bronwyn

Data Reside In Memory And Accessed Via CLR Database Objects.

Nov 7, 2007

Hi,
I want to manage memory relational data in the memory(Insert, delete, return) and manipulate the data via SQL 2005 and CLR database objects.
The gool is to manage a table that relatively has a lot of inserts and deletes which takes a lot of IO operations and i want to reduce it. the data itself is not permanant each row deleted from the table after 15-20 minutes.
I looked at the extended stored procedure and other CLR enable objects and it seams that they all return data from the database itself.
How can i return data that is reside in the memory?
