Need To Insert Data Into A Table Within My User Deifined Function 'GetTable1()'?

May 23, 2007

I have a UDF called 'GetTable1()'. In this function, the return value are the rows selected from table 'Table1'.

But, before returning, I would like to check if the table is empty, and if it is then insert a dummy row into this table. How would I do this within a function?

User Defined Function: Convert String Value Of Table To Table Object

Jul 20, 2005

Does anyone know where to find or how to write a quick user defined fucntionthat will return a table object when passed the string name of the tableobject. The reason why I want dynamicallly set the table name in a storedprocudue WITHOUT using concatination and exec a SQL String.HenceIf @small_int_parameter_previous = 1 then@vchar_tablename = "sales_previous"else@vchar_tablename = "sales"Endselect * from udf_TableLookup(@vchar_tablename )So if I pass 1, that means I want all records from "sales_previous"otherwise give me all records from "sales" (Sales_Previous would last yearssales data for example).udf_TableLookup would I guess lookup in sysobjects for the table name andreturn the table object? I don't know how to do this.I want to do this to avoid having 2 stored procedures..one for current andone for previous year.Please respond to group so others may benfiit from you knowledge.ThanksErik

SQL Server 2008 :: Insert Data Into Table Variable But Need To Insert 1 Or 2 Rows Depending On Data

Feb 26, 2015

I am writing a query to return some production data. Basically i need to insert either 1 or 2 rows into a Table variable based on a decision as to does the production part make 1 or 2 items ( The Raw data does not allow for this it comes from a look up in my database)

I can retrieve all the source data i need easily but when i come to insert it into the table variable i need to insert 1 record if its a single part or 2 records if its a twin part. I know could use a cursor but im sure there has to be an easier way !

Below is the code i have at the moment

declare @startdate as datetime
declare @enddate as datetime
declare @Line as Integer
DECLARE @count INT

set @startdate = '2015-01-01'
set @enddate = '2015-01-31'

How To Insert Into A Table With A Function?

Sep 11, 2007

I want to add a record into a table, using a function.
This function needs to give back the number of records of a given table.

Function ImportResults

@NumberOfRecords int
@TableName varchar(60)
@ImportDate datetime
@Result bit

@Result = 1
@ImportDate =getdate()

--Open Table with tablenames

select TableName from Tbl_ImportTables
For each record in Tbl_ImportTables

@TableName = Tbl_ImportTables.TableName
@NumberOfRecords = select count(*) from @TableName
-- add to Import Results
Insert into Tbl_Import_Results

(ImportDate
,TableName
,NumberOfRecords
)
VALUES
(
@ImportDate
, @TableName
, @NumberOfRecords
)
-- Check 0 records (I only want to know if there is a table with 0 records)
IF @NumberOfRecords=0 then @Result=0
Next record

RETURN @Result

End function

Can somebody help me with the right syntax (I am new to functions and sp's)?
Is this a scalar valued function?

Thanks,
Frans

User-defined Function In Data Flow

May 11, 2006

I want to use a scalar user-defined function (udf) in a data flow with an OLE DB Source and an OLE DB Destination. The udf parameters are 2 columns from the source and the udf result is mapped to a destination column.

I've tried using an OLE DB Command component but I'm not getting very far. This statement works in Management Studio:

SELECT dbo.objectIDFromSourceKey('person','-128283')

I was expecting to just substitute ? for each of the function values 'person','-128283' but SSIS doesn't like the syntax (apparently it needs a FROM clause). Am I on the right track here or...?

Handling Large Queries In A Table Valued User Defined Function

May 20, 2008

Hello,

We have created several Table Valued User Defined Functions in a Production SQL Server 2005 DB that are returning large (tens of thousands of) rows obtained through a web service. Our code is based on the MSDN article Extending SQL Server Reporting Services with SQL CLR Table-Valued Functions .

What we have found in our implementations of variations of this code on three seperate servers is that as the rowset grows, the length of time required to return the rows grows exponentially. With 10 columns, we have maxed out at approximately 2 500 rows. Once our rowset hit that size, no rows were being returned and the queries were timing out.

Here is a chart comparing the time elapsed to the rows returned at that time for a sample trial i ran:

Sec / Actual Rows Returned
0 0
10 237
20 447
30 481
40 585
50 655
60 725
70 793
80 860
90 940
100 1013
110 1081
120 1115
130 1151
140 1217
150 1250
160 1325
170 1325
180 1430
190 1467
200 1502
210 1539
220 1574
230 1610
240 1645
250 1679
260 1715
270 1750
280 1787
290 1822
300 1857
310 1892
320 1923
330 1956
340 1988
350 1988
360 2022
370 2060
380 2094
390 2094
400 2130
410 2160
420 2209
430 2237
440 2237
450 2274
460 2274
470 2308
480 2342
490 2380
500 2380
510 2418
520 2418
530 2451
540 2480
550 2493
560 2531
570 2566

It took 570 seconds (just over 9 1/2 minutes to return 2566 rows).

The minute breakdown during my trial is as follows:
1 = 655 (+ 655)
2 = 1081 (+ 426)
3 = 1325 (+244)
4 = 1610 (+285)
5 = 1822 (+212)
6 = 1988 (+166)
7 = 2160 (+172)
8 = 2308 (+148)
9 = 2451 (+143)

As you can tell, except for a few discrepancies to the resulting row count at minutes 4 and 7 (I will attribute these to timing as the results grid in SQL Management Studio was being updated once every 5 seconds or so), as time went on, fewer and fewer rows were being returned in a given time period. This was a "successful" run as the entire rowset was returned but on more than several occasions, we have reached the limit and have had 0 new rows per minute towards the end of execution.

Allow me to explain the code in further detail:

[SqlFunction(FillRowMethodName = "FillListItem")]
public static IEnumerable DiscoverListItems(...)
{

ArrayList listItems = new ArrayList();

SPToSQLService service = new SPToSQLService();

[...]

DataSet itemQueryResult = service.DoItemQuery(...); // This is a synchronous call returning a DataSet from the Web Service

//Load the DS to the ArrayList

return listItems;
}

public static void FillListItem(object obj, out string col1, out string col2, out string col3, ...)
{

ArrayList item = (ArrayList) obj;

col1 = item.Count > 0 ? (string) item[0] : "";
col2 = item.Count > 0 ? (string) item[1] : "";
col3 = item.Count > 0 ? (string) item[2] : "";
[...]
}

As you will notice, the web service is called, and the DataSet is loaded to an ArrayList object (containing ArrayList objects), before the main ArrayList is returned by the UDF method. There are 237 rows returned within 10 seconds, which leads me to believe that all of this has occured within 10 seconds. The method GetListItems has executed completely and the ArrayList is now being iterated through by the code calling the FillListItem method. I believe that this code is causing the result set to be returned at a decreasing rate. I know that the GetListItems code is only being executed once and that the WebService is only being called once.

Now alot of my larger queries ( > 20 000 rows) have timed out because of this behaviour, and my workaround was to customize my web service to page the data in reasonable chunks and call my UDF's in a loop using T-SQL. This means calling the Web Service up to 50 times per query in order to return the result set.

Surely someone else who has used Table Valued UDFs has come accross this problem. I would appreciate some feedback from someone in the know, as to whether I'm doing something wrong in my code, or how to optimize an SQL Server properly to allow for better performance with CLR functions.

Thanks,

Dragan Radovic

Fetch Data Of User Who Have Created Profile Within 7 Days - DateDiff Function

May 2, 2015

I have added one webpage designed in ASP.Net with C# and sql server 2005 as database. There is table for user registration in which there is a column for ProfileCreationDate the data type of that column is date time .

I would like to fetch data of those user who have created profile within 7 days. For getting desired result I am trying this query.

select Name ,Profession,ProfileCreationDate from tblRegistration where DATEDIFF ( Day , '" + System.DateTime.Now + "',ProfileCreationDate)<7 order by ProfileCreationDate DESC

System.DateTime.Now is a function for getting current date time in C#

The query is neither giving error nor giving desired result.

How Can I Insert A Semicolon As User Data?

Sep 27, 2005

I'm working with an existing program that crafts an insert statement
from user input. The data is machine generated, though, and some
of it has semicolons. How can I "escape" those semicolons so that
I can insert them into the database? Does the ESCAPE key work
with the insert statement, too? Can I just replace the ";" with
some other character(s) to escape it? I'm not finding much in the
online help.  Thanks!

On completing the wizard and clicking the finish button, I want the data to be inserted into the SQl express Players table.
I am having problems getting this to work and keep getting exceptions.

How Can I Assign Data Returned From A Stored Procedure Into The Return Table Of A Table Valued Function

Apr 18, 2007

Here is the scenario,
I have 2 stored procedures, SP1 and SP2

SP1 has the following code:

declare @tmp as varchar(300)
set @tmp = 'SELECT * FROM
OPENROWSET ( ''SQLOLEDB'', ''SERVER=.;Trusted_Connection=yes'',
''SET FMTONLY OFF EXEC ' + db_name() + '..StoredProcedure'' )'

EXEC (@tmp)

SP2 has the following code:

SELECT *
FROM SP1 (which won't work because SP1 is a stored procedure. A view, a table valued function, or a temporary table must be used for this)

Views - can't use a view because they don't allow dynamic sql and the db_name() in the OPENROWSET function must be used.
Temp Tables - can't use these because it would cause a large hit on system performance due to the frequency SP2 and others like it will be used.
Functions - My last resort is to use a table valued function as shown:

FUNCTION MyFunction
( )
RETURNS @retTable
(
@Field1 int,
@Field2 varchar(50)
)
AS
BEGIN
-- the problem here is that I need to call SP1 and assign it's resulting data into the
-- @retTable variable

-- this statement is incorrect, but it's meaning is my goal
INSERT @retTableSELECT *FROM SP1

RETURN
END

Select Based On User Identity Name Included In Insert Into Second Table

Aug 25, 2006

I am having issues getting this to work. I have the user login to a page to
put in a request for vacation. When they login, I have a label that isn't
visible that is equal to their User.Identity.Name.
I select the user from the employee table where the username = the label User
Identity Name and pull in the emp_id which is the primary key that identifies
the user.
I need to insert the request into the request table with the emp_id from the
select statement, without showing the em_id on the screen. I tried using a
hidden field and assigning the emp_id as the value, but it isn't working.
Not sure if this is the best way to do this. Really new to ASP.NET 2.0 so I
really appreciate any help.

SSMS Express: Create TABLE && INSERT Data Into Table - Error Msgs 102 && 156

May 18, 2006

Hi all,

I have SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMS Express) and SQL Server 2005 Express (SS Express) installed in my Windows XP Pro PC that is on Microsoft Windows NT 4 LAN System. My Computer Administrator grants me the Administror Privilege to use my PC. I tried to use SQLQuery.sql (see the code below) to create a table "LabResults" and insert 20 data (values) into the table. I got Error Messages 102 and 156 when I did "Parse" or "Execute". This is my first time to apply the data type 'decimal' and the "VALUES" into the table. I do not know what is wrong with the 'decimal' and how to add the "VALUES": (1) Do I put the precision and scale of the decimal wrong? (2) Do I have to use "GO" after each "VALUES"? Please help and advise.

Thanks in advance,

Scott Chang

Insert Data Into A Table From Two Tables Into A Single Table Along With A Hard Coded Value?

Feb 9, 2012

I'm trying to insert data into a table from two tables into a single table along with a hard coded value.

insert into TABLE1
(THING,PERSONORGROUP,ACCESSRIGHTS)
VALUES
((select SYSTEM_ID from TABLE2 where
AUTHOR IN (select SYSTEM_ID from TABLE2 where USER_ID
=('USER1'))),(select SYSTEM_ID from TABLE2 where USER_ID
=('USER2')),255)

I get the following-

Msg 512, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

Subquery returned more than 1 value. This is not permitted when the subquery follows =, !=, <, <= , >, >= or when the subquery is used as an expression.

The statement has been terminated.

Do I need to use a cursor?

Transact SQL :: Insert Data From Temp Table To Other Table

Oct 5, 2015

I want to insert the data from temp table to other table. Only condition is, it needs to sorted based on tool number and tool date. For example if we have ten records for tool number 1000, it should be order by tool number and then based on tool_dt. Both tables doesn't have any primary keys. Please find below my code. I removed all the unnecessary columns for simple understanding. INSERT INTO tool_summary (tool_nbr, tool_dt) select tool_nbr, tool_dt from #tool order by tool_nbr, tool_dt...But this query is not working as expected. Data is getting shuffled.

Actual Data
Expected Result

1000
1-Aug
1000
1-Feb
1000
1-Jul

Dyamic View/function Based On Table Data (?)

Sep 21, 2006

Hey,First, sorry if this post appear twice, because, I can not find my postrecently send, trying to post it once again.I'm out of ideas, so, I thought, will search help here again :(I'm trying to prepare a view for ext. app. This is in normal cases veryeasy, but what if the view structure should be dynamic?!Here is my point (I will siplify the examples).I have a table:create table t_data (id bigint identity (1,1) not null,valvarchar(10) not null,data varchar(100) not nullconstraint [PK_t_data] primary key clustered(id) with fillfactor = 90 on [PRIMARY] )goinsert into t_data (val, data) values('1111111111','1234567890abcdefghijklmnoprstuvwxyz 1234567890abcdefghijklmnoprstuvwxyz67890abcdefghij klmnoprstuvwxyz')insert into t_data (val, data) values('2222222222','1234567890abcdefghijklmnoprstuvwxyz 1234567890abcdefghijklmnoprstuvwxyz12345abcdefghij klmnoprstuvwxyz')insert into t_data (val, data) values('3333333333','12345abcdefghijklmnoprstuvwxyz12345 67890abcdefghijklmnoprstuvwxyz1234567890abcdefghij klmnoprstuvwxyz')insert into t_data (val, data) values('4444444444','67890abcdefghijklmnoprstuvwxyz12345 67890abcdefg12345hijklmnoprstuvwxyz67890abcdefghij klmnoprstuvwxyz')insert into t_data (val, data) values('5555555555','1230abcdefghijklmnoprst12345uvwxyz1 234567890abcdefghijklmnoprstuvwxyz67890abcdefghijk lmnoprstuvwxyz')gocreate table t_dataVal (id bigint identity (1,1) not null,valvarchar(10) not null,fill varchar(4) not nullconstraint [PK_t_dataVal] primary key clustered(id) with fillfactor = 90 on [PRIMARY] )goinsert into t_dataVal (val, fill) values ('1111111111','AAAA')insert into t_dataVal (val, fill) values ('2222222222','KKKK')insert into t_dataVal (val, fill) values ('3333333333','DDDD')insert into t_dataVal (val, fill) values ('4444444444','ZZZZ')insert into t_dataVal (val, fill) values ('5555555555','CCCC')gocreate table t_conf (id bigint identity (1,1) not null,start int not null,length int not null,description varchar(20) not null,constraint [PK_t_conf] primary key clustered(id) with fillfactor = 90 on [PRIMARY] )goinsert into t_conf (start, length, description) values (1,10,'value_1')insert into t_conf (start, length, description) values (11,3,'value_2')insert into t_conf (start, length, description) values(55,15,'value_3')insert into t_conf (start, length, description) values (33,2,'value_4')insert into t_conf (start, length, description) values (88,1,'value_5')insert into t_conf (start, length, description) values (56,7,'value_6')goNow here is the issue:table t_conf contain data, which can be modified by user. The user isseting the appropriate values.Now, there should be a view, which returns:- as headers (collumn names) this what is defined in description columnof t_conf (for example: value_1, value_2 ... value_6)- as values, substrings of all data from t_data, cutted with start andlength values for appropriate decription from t_conf.- first two columns of view, should be column val and fill of t_dataValtableSo the effect should be like this:valfillvalue_1value_2value_3value_4value_5value61111111111AAAA1234567890abc....2222222222KKKK1234567890abc....3333333333DDDD12345abcdefgh....4444444444ZZZZ67890abcdefgh....5555555555CCCC1230abcdefghi....of course, for all other value_x should be the appropriate substringsshown.Sounds simple, hm?Well, I'm trying to do this, since yesterday evening, and can not :(In real life, the call of view/function might happend a lot.The table t_data might have around 4000 records, but the data string islonger (around 3000 characters).Application, might acess a udf, which returns table, and I was focusingin that.Was trying, to create local temp table in function, to insert values,using cursor over t_conf.Unfortunately, everything what I get, is just a vertical representationof the data, and I need it horizontal :(The other problem in function is, that I can not use exec() (wll known)so I can not even create a table,dynamicly, using as column names description value from table t_conf,and as size of field length from this table.Sorry, that the description is maybe not exactly for my problem, butthis is because I'm not even sure, which way to use :(any help will be appreciated!Thank You - Matik

Help With DBO User Can't Add Data To Table Error

Jun 22, 2007

Hi,
Question:

I just moved a database from one server to the other and now I'm getting an error when I try to modify a field in my table from management studio:
- sql2005 the user does not have permission to perform this action.

I made sure to remove all users from that database once i got it up and running on my new server and made sure I didn't have orphaned users.

I created a new userid and gave it full dbo rights. I planned on restricting permissions later.

Is there something new to check in 2005 that would prevent a user with full dbo to modify data in a table?

The table has no constraints or dependencies, it's basically a lookup table so very simple stuff.

Thanks, Seb.

Transact SQL :: Insert Data To Different Table From Other Table

Aug 22, 2015

we have a table below

TABLE1
ID         Roll        Name         Amount     . . . . . . so on
---------------------------------------
1            2           Alex            500
2            5           Jones          600
3            2           Ales            400

and we have TABLE 2

ID         Roll        Name         Amount   . . . . . . . so on

In both the Tables ID Field is Identity Field and rest all the columns are identical in both the tables.I want to perform a query in such a way that SQL Should,

1) Remove all data from TABLE2 First
2) Select those records from TABLE1 where Roll = 2
3) Then, Insert the results to TABLE 2

So we should get the result similar to below:

ID         Roll        Name         Amount   . . . . . . . so on
---------------------------------------
1            2           Alex            500
3            2           Ales            400

how can I do this in a same sql statement.
