Move Distribution Data/log Files To Another Drive
Jun 20, 2007I haven't found the definitive answer on how or if this can be done without removing replication. I'm thinking ALTER DATABASE modify_file is the way to go. Anybody know if this will work or a better way to go about it?

How To Move Only The Transaction Log Files (.ldf) To A Different Drive?
Apr 17, 2007Hello guys and girls. I have installed SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition and I have specified that the databases should be created on the K: drive. This is okay but now I need to move all the transaction log files (.ldf) to the L: drive. I have already changed the default location for the log files to point to the L: drive and the new databases that were created after the installation have their transaction log file correctly in the L: drive but now I need to move transaction log files for the master, model, temp ... databases. How can this be done? And are there any gotchas?

Hello,
I need to move all log files for my SQL 2005 databases to another drive. I don't wish to shrink the files, I need to move the logs to another drive spindle. I did find an article (Article ID: 224071) that describes moving both the database and logs using sp_detach and then sp_attach. What is the best way just to move the logs to another drive on the same server, and that keeps the databases in their original location?

Move Current Huge Data File To New GPT Drive?
Oct 31, 2015I have a database data file almost at 2tb maxing out a windows drive. Only 16gb left. Should I just add another data file on another Windows drive for growth? Or just move current huge data file to a new GPT drive? Or do both adding another data file and moving existing to its own new GPT drive?
Primary objective is to make do for now.
How To Move A Log File From 'e' Drive To 'f' Drive....
Nov 9, 2000I am trying to move a log file from one drive to another.
What I have done is add another file to my file group. So now my log has a file on the 'e' drive and one on the 'f' drive. I now want to remove the file on the 'e' drive. I have emptied the file on the 'e' drive. When doing the command:
ALTER DATABASE Uniprodruntime
REMOVE FILE m_rk_runtime_log
I get the following error message..
Server: Msg 5020, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The primary data or log file cannot be removed from a database.
I have also gone into enterprise manager and tried to delete the file and it does nothing.
Has anyone run into this?

Hi all,
I'm trying to find some way to implement a move file task in my Data Flow. I parse through a flat file, retrieve a value, then I'm using a lookup table to check if that value exists in a table... if the value doesnt exist, I need to move this file to a new directory and insert the value into a different table. Does anyone have any ideas about how to move the file while using the Data Flow pane?
Or is there some way to pass information from the look up table to the Control flow pane and use the Move File Task there? I'm trying to stay away from a Script task or a Script component unless it's unavoidable. I appreciate any ideas!
New Install, But I Need To Move Data Files
Apr 26, 2007I could really use some help on this one. I know virtually nothing about SQL Server. We installed this because our database for the application we're running (Lexis Nexis Time Matters) had gotten too large for the Express 2005 version. We've also installed a new version of the software, and on a new server.
The new server has the drive partitioned into two partitions. When installing the application, I selected drive D (545 gb) as the data drive, but when I installed SQL server, it was installed on drive C (12 gb). I did not realize that the the application data was simply configuration information, and the data for the program is actually being installed on the C drive (Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData).
Is there a simple procedure to move this data, including the SQL instance (TIMEMATTERS) to the D drive? Or should I uninstall and start over?

Sep 1, 2007Currently looping through the set of flat files like CHK0604, CHK0611, CHK0618, and CHK0625 from the source folder C:SOURCE
OBJECTIVE within the flat file if any records/rows cause error i have to move the bad data into separate folder C:ERROR
STEPS TAKEN
1) In FOREACH LOOP component i specified the variable User:: sourceFilePath for my source file CHK0604 etc. location C:SOURCE. The loop walkthrough each file in C:SOURCE and if no error then moves the flat file into another folder C:ARCHIVED. This task is perfectly working.
2) Within the dataflow I am diverting the the bad rows from "conditional component" into "Flat File Destination" Component.
3) "Flat File Destination" Connection manager i set the expressions as @[User:: sourceFilePath] +"_Error.TXT".
ISSUE
Because of point (3) the error file is created in the SOURCE flat file location C:SOURCE.
QUESTION
1) My error file name should be CHK0604_Error, CHK0611_Error, CHK0618_Error, CHK0625_Error created in another folder C:ERROR.
2) How to move the bad data into another directory while looping through a set of FLAT FILES ?
3) If i have to create another variable like @[User:: ErrorFilePath] where to create ? How to use the source file title as the title of error file.?

Aug 17, 2006I obviously did not search the archives on the right terms so what isthe easiest and fastest way to move a 3G database from a nearly full Cdrive to the nearly empty D drive that should have been used.I could back it up, drop it, recreate it using the D drive, and restoreit but it seems like there should be a way to just move the datafileand use if from the new location.I am thinking that detatch/attach is the best method, but I would likeconfirmation or suggestions on how to proceed or things to be aware ofwhen using this method.-- Mark D Powell --

Why The Upgraded Files On Drive C Instead Of D
Mar 1, 2002I just upgraded SQL6.5 standard(Installed 7.0 and ran Wizard to upgrade dbs) to SQL7.0 by running the exe file.
It turned out that the MSSQL7 folder is follen on Drive C instead of Drive D which is what I wanted. When I was running the upgrade exe file, there was no prompt to ask me the right path.
How could I have the MSSQL7 folder installed on D drive?

Moving DB Files To Another Drive On The Server.

I have been instructed to move a large database we have on one of our servers off the current drive (local RAID-5 driveset in the server) to a EMC "drive" (logical drive, off-server).
I know one option is to back up the database, delete the database, re-create the db using the new drive for data/log files, then restore the database.
However, I was wondering if it would be better to just detach the DB, move the data/log files, then reattach to them?
Is it half-doz of one, and 6 of the other?
How should I go about this dastardly deed?
Off to poke around in BOL, but thought I would post first in case it's an incredibly easy answer for y'all

SQL 2012 :: Fusion-IO Drive And MDB Files
Nov 5, 2014We have a cluster with two nodes and two instances of SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition running on them. Volume W: is a Fusion-IO card.
On one of these nodes a lot of database names are showing up in the resource monitor as *.mdf files (W:0MSSQL1…).
How and why SQL Server is using these files? They only show up on one of the nodes having more load.
Volume I: is the volume where the transaction log is written so we can explain these files.

Jun 9, 2015I have two databases on a Production Server that I want to Log Ship to a Test Server. According to the sys.master files the physical File Location is on an E drive. Early attempts at Log Shipping these two files error'd out due to space issues on the E drive (one Log Shipped and then one err'd out). I was subsequently informed from the server group that they would prefer that I Log Ship these two database files over to the M Drive where more space is available. In fact, they modified the Server Properties / Database Settings / Database Default Locations (for Data and Log) to the larger M drive (I'm not really sure why they just don't increase the E drive space but there is proabably a good reason).
Okay, so now my problems have been solved. Easy enough. Now I deleted the successful Log Shipped database and started from scratch. However, as before, one db restored and one failed (due to space issues). Apparently, both db are pointing towards the E drive. How is that possible?
So here I am with one successful database and the normal sys databases pointing to the E drive. What is the best way of approaching this move to the larger and preferred M drive?
Reading/writing Files To Network Drive
Mar 20, 2007We have a package that is using a ForEach loop container to access files on a network drive. For some reason I am getting a message that the ForEach enumerator is empty and did not find any files that matched the pattern. For the pattern I left the default *.* for testing purposes. I have specified the file folder as \remoteserverfilesharesubfolder and also as \remoteserverc$filesharesubfolder and have gotten the same message. However when I map a network drive and set the file folder to the network drive it finds the files. Is this a permissions issue?
After I finish processing the file I want to move it to a new directory. Once this is deployed in production, the package will not be running under a domain account and probably won't have access to the network folder. Is there any way to specifiy in the connection manager itself that it should use a specific account to access the folder?

Jun 13, 2001Without restoring the database, has anyone written a slick little piece of code that moves a file existing on on filegroup to another newly created filegroup without doing it from a restore.
The purpose of doing this is to get rid of one data file and placing the data into the data file we are retaining. We have some more physical file space and are moving data into one data file and one transaction log file.
We have already ran the DBCC SHRINKFILE with EMPTYFILE to move the data,
We have already ran the ALTER DATABASE statement but here, because the filegroup is identified as PRIMARY in the sysfilegroup table, we can not REMOVE the data file because of indexes relating to the PRIMARY filegroup.
So if I could ALTER DATABASE and create a bogus filegroup and move the data file which I want to get rid of into the bogus filegroup, I could ALTER DATABASE with REMOVE filegroup and solve the situation.
Does anyone know of an easier way to do it other than BACKUP database and RESTORE database.....please help!!!

Transaction Log File Corruption When Database Files Are Placed In SSD Drive
Oct 26, 2015The MDF and LDF files are placed in SSD drive and tempdb files are placed in HDD drive. Snapshot isolation is enabled on the database. When a script is executed to insert data with NULL value to a table which has NOT NULL column, the transaction fails and then a log undo happens which fails and takes the database to suspect mode.
But when the MDF and LDF files are placed in HDD drive all this do not happen. The transaction just fails.
