How do you use BOL? I've heard time again that there is much info in BOL but when i look at it it seems too brief and not detailed. I find it hard to find what i'm looking for anyway. How do you use it?

Hi All,I searched this news group but couldn't find that problem whichis suprising... maybe I'm doing something stupid.I start one of the chm files (books on line help files).I read about a topic. There are links.I click on them. It tells me "Selection is not associated with anytopic. Please try again.". Its ahref link to jscript function:javascript:hhobj_1.Click() but I do not have it and cannot find it.So I have to go between all those chm files hoping to find the topicof my choice.Plus I want to search them all at once. There must be a (smart) and easy way to do this. Please, do you have any suggestions.ThankfullyJimmy Ol' Boy
are a mess, reminiscent of the structurless "goto" programming of days past. One of you brainiacs need to erect a "real" getting started section, with procedural steps on how a first time user can successfully download, install, and use SQL Server Express. Not all of us are working in corporations where the guy in the next cubicle can answer questions for newbies.
I will try once again, nicely, to ask a question about installing SQL Server Express Edition SP2 onto a Windows Vista machine. That drama will take place in another post.
I am trying to install sql server 2005 books online but I am failing and I am getting this message "This installation pakage could not be opened.Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package"
am I doing anything wrong or has the version of books online changed? Do I have to install anything else before installing it? or does my operating system not support it?
I downloaded and tried to install the file "SqlServer2K5_BOL_May2007.msi" and got a message: "This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package." Please advise.
Can some one give me detail instruction to installing the SQL Server 2005 Express Books Online. I am new to SQL Server and want to install the MS training material.
I am trying to go thru the deployment tutorial, but I'm running into some trouble. The two sample packages I need to work with are called DataTransfer.dtsx and LoadXMLData.dtsx found in the samples.
When I examine these packages, they are writing to tables called dbo.HighIncomeCustomers and dbo.OrderDatesByCountryRegion. These tables don't exist in my copy of AdventureWorks database.
Also, when I try to open the Connection Manager for the target tables, I get a message that says, "The specified provider is not suported. Please choose different provider in connection manager."
Is it possible I'm having these issues because I'm working with a different version of the sample packages?
Hi,I have been trying to download the latest update to SQL Server BOL forquite some time without any success. I have tried downloading around3-4 times. Every time (size of msi file would be around 25 KB) I try toextract the msi file, I get an error message to the effect that 'it isnot a valid windows installer package'. Has anyone come across thisproblem?Have been trying to download from this URL -http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...A6F79CB1-A420-445F-8A4B-BD77A7DA194B&displaylang=enThanks,Harish*********************************Long way to go before I sleep ..*** Sent via Developersdex http://www.developersdex.com ***Don't just participate in USENET...get rewarded for it!
I have a problem getting the full-text search service working on my SQL Express install.
I can see the "SQL Server FullText Search" service running in the SQL Server CM but when I run: select fulltextserviceproperty('isfulltextinstalled') it returns false.
Can anyone explain what I must of missed or point me in the right direction?
I am creating a simple report in reporting services. It contains basic fields such as first_name, last_name, ID#, location.
Is there a way to create a search/find function that lets me input a field and it will find the results from any column?
I think I can figure out how to search by 1 single column but want the user to input one thing and search multiple fields.
For further clarification...if they know the last_name, but want the id#, they can search for last name and get all the columns for the particular search....same would work for, if they know the ID#, but want the last_name, they could search for ID# and get all columns in the result.

What is the most efficient way to write an SP to tackle all kinds of combinations here (where a user could give any search input).I know this must be fairly common to come across this situation.I have written an SP which will take in all the parameters and based on "IF" statements and using "LIKE" in SQL, this SP returns search results. But I wanted to know if there was more efficient ways of doing this, as you can imagine you might end up having several combinations of IF conditions.
Hi all, I am using ASP.NET 2003 with SQL Server as database. I have a database of a book store with BookPicture, Author, Title, and Description of the Book. Now when the user searchers for a book with a keyword, how can I display the results which should show: 1. The picture of the book, 2. The at it right, Title of Book, 3. The author,4. The descritionThen the image of "Add to cart" Each search result must be separated by a box like the cell of a table. Is it possible to be done? Thanking you in advance Tomy
As most are aware by now, the Report Viewer controls for reporting services in 12.0 and prior rely on ActiveX to work. This causes compatibility issues for any non-IE browser, and as of IE11 and now Windows 10 Edge browser it's causing issues for even IE. Research suggests that SSRS 2014 switched out to Silverlight:
[URL]
However, Silverlight uses NPAPI which is another technology for which all browsers are ending support. As of this writing, Chrome has already ended support. Similarly/Coincidentally Java support is ending as well.
My question is, what are Microsoft's plan to restore functionality such as print/search for browsers where ActiveX/Silverlight cannot be used since this support is no longer strictly a 3rd party browser situation?
I am looking for some syntax to help me with a traditional search/replace style requirement. I am wanting to examine the contents of one column and populate another.
similar to this SQL case statement
CASE ProductLine WHEN 'R1' THEN 'Road' WHEN 'M1' THEN 'Mountain' WHEN 'T1' THEN 'Touring' WHEN 'S2' THEN 'Other sale items' ELSE 'Not for sale' END,
the twist is that R1, M1 etc. can appear anywhere in the ProductLine column.
We have SQL cluster installed on top of windows cluster on VM environment. Node1 and Node2 under Windows Failover Cluster. SQL instance is currently on node2 the instance is up and running, but SQL Cluster service remains online pending and it restarts the instance on every 5 minutes.
SQL Browser service are running successfully.TCP/IP ports are enabled and configured. If we start the SQL server agent it is on for seconds and stopped immediately .Cluster Service is attempt to connect to the SQL service every few minutes (setting in SQL cluster resource) for the IsAlive check, if this fails then the SQL resource is restarted even if the instance was online. Hope this is what happening exactly.

I have been trying to straighten out the select statement(underlined) in the procedure below but no luck. It is at the link below:(User-Specific Paging from ASP.NET)http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnpag/html/scalenethowto05.aspI think the "author" messed up during the copy and paste. Someone please help out. I really need its correct version. I have installed the MSDN SQL 7.0 final release on 2 Win NT (1 server and 1 Wkst)
When I launch DTS, I CAN export/import ACCESS <--> SQL and vice versa
I CANNOT export/import SQL7 <--> SQL7
I have this error messsage : "The licence for installation of Microsoft SQL Server on your source and destination connections does not permit the use of DTS to transform data. refer to your licence agreement for more information"
any ideas why ? Is there any limitation with MSDN CD ?
I recently got me a new laptop with Vista preinstalled. All good and well, but when I try to install a program vital for my profession, I get an error (OS not supported for this program). In the install I can configure what components to install, one of them is MSDN 2000. My question is, will SQL Server Express take over what MSDN can't on Vista (and thus running the program needing the MSDN 2000), or will windows XP be the new OS on my brand new laptop in the future. Love Vista, hate the compatibility.
Where is the list for forums, When i started to write for Sqlserver, i never searched or looked for forum. Same did when i was working with the c#. Now I have to find the correct forum. So where is the list of those forums, thanks.
the msdn article explains how to input new data to a databse and return the primary key of the inputted row. It works perfectly. However, it explains how to insert a value, but there is a problem. It seems to set the value to be submitted in the VB code, instead of having the value be the user's input in the textbox. Look for the following line in the code below: newRow("ClientFileNumber") = "ClientFileNumber" It inputs "clientfilenumber" instead of what is actually inputted in the texbox. Does anyone know how to bypass this, to not have the words "clientfilenumber" inputted?Dim sqlconn As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection("Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|Client.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True") Dim catDA As SqlDataAdapter = New SqlDataAdapter("SELECT * FROM Orders", sqlconn) catDA.InsertCommand = New SqlCommand("JobInsert", sqlconn) catDA.InsertCommand.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure catDA.InsertCommand.Parameters.Add("@ClientFileNumber", SqlDbType.VarChar, 50, "ClientFileNumber")Dim NewJobNumber As SqlParameter = catDA.InsertCommand.Parameters.Add("@Identity", SqlDbType.Int, 0, "OrdersID") NewJobNumber.Direction = ParameterDirection.Output
sqlconn.Open() Dim catDS As DataSet = New DataSetcatDA.Fill(catDS, "Orders")
Dim newRow As DataRow = catDS.Tables("Orders").NewRow() newRow("ClientFileNumber") = ""catDS.Tables("Orders").Rows.Add(newRow) catDA.Update(catDS, "Orders")

An internal licensing review is being carried out at my site for the first time since I joined. I have been asked to confirm that development SQL Server instances have been installed from MSDN installation disks and production instances from non-MSDN disks. I understand that serverproperty('licensetype') will show me this information in SQL Server 2000, and I am (perhaps incorrectly?) assuming that a result of "DISABLED" means MSDN was used for the installation.
In SQL Server 2005, i believe the installation does not record the necessary information in the registry, meaning serverproperty('licensetype') is of no use.
Is the question i've been asked impossible to answer? Is there any way I can find out if MSDN disks (or network copies of them) were used to install a SQL Server 2005 instance?
