Exporting Data From Excel Into Sql Server - Newbie

Aug 31, 2007

Using SQL Server 2005 Standard

The basic question
What is the best way to export data from an excel spreadsheet into a sql server table?
My Application
Getting data indicating hours worked from employee timesheets into a centralised DB, then running analysis reports on it.
The columns and datatypes in the excel sheet are as follows:
Week (int) | EmployeeID (int) | JobNum (int) | ActivityNum (int) | Hours (int)

There will be a new excel file each week that, once the employee has filled out the data, would need to be saved and exported to the sql table. The columns in the sql table are exactly the same as the excel table with the addition of a RecordID primary key column.

Can I create a macro button that they can push when they have completed their timesheet OR would it be better to tell the employees to save copies of their timesheets in a certain folder on the company network and then run a batch on all the files in the folder at the end of the day?

Or is there another more efficient solution? Would I use SSIS for this or something else?

I've never used SSIS before and am a newbie at SQL Server too.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Excel : Connecting To SQL Server 2005

May 19, 2008

I had been using Excel to connect to SQL server. This worked merrily for about 6 months then I had reason to reinstall Visual Studio.

Now I've reinstalled that, my connection between Excel ans SQL Server won't work. I thought the ADO code I had put in my VBA macro would be sufficient to connect, but obviously I need to do something else, but what? Please help!

Do I need to create an ODBC connection in Control Panel? Or something else?

The code is unchanged from before and the VBA project does reference the ADO object Library.

RDLC Newbie Questions (hopefully)...connecting Dataset To Report That Contains Multiple Data Tables

Sep 12, 2007

Hi All,

We are post-deployment with a serious reporting issue that's causing us to rethink our reporting solution. We're considering moving from what we have to SQL Server Reporting Services (client side).

I have spent the past couple of days getting up to speed on this feature and seeing if we can easily migrate it into our existing application. However, I've hit a couple of stumbling blocks and was hoping perhaps someone here could either tell me the solution or point me in the right direction.

I'm not having any problems creating basic reports (e.g. flat data).

However, I am having problems creating reports where there are related tables in a dataset.

The way it works with our existing solution is that I get a dataset (which contains several data tables) and point it to the report's datasource. That report expects those tables and I have defined table-relationships in the report which process and display the information correctly.

I'm not having as much luck with RDLC.

I can go into futher detail about how I'm creating the report, but let me just ask these general questions first:
1. Can I set a dataset containing multiple datatables equal to a property on an RDLC report and that RDLC report know how to treat and display the data?
2. Is there a better/smarter than this to get a field selection from my datasource (remember, this information is coming from a stored procedure so connecting directly to the database is not an option):
a. In code, populate dataset
b. In code, write dataset schema to xml (e.g. an xsd file)
c. In Visual Studio, add the XSD file to project
d. Use fields from XSD file to drag and drop fields on report

A fancy example would be nice too. I've googled like crazy the past couple of days and downloaded as many samples as I can find (including the ones on ftponline.com, gotreportviewer.com, "Tudor's WebLog", and several others). However, I have yet to find one that uses grouping and related datatables.

Thank you so much (if, for nothing else, reading this post )

Newbie Migrating From Excel To Databases

Apr 9, 2006

Dear Friends,

I am designing a web app using sql server 2005 as a the backend. I have spent an enormous amount of time designing the db tables and ensured that they are normalised. Many, as you would expect have reference to what I would call indexes which are linked via foreign keys. This may be a really dumb question but.....
How do I make a lookup referential table where the integers become categories not an exact reference value (just like we do when we use vlookup in excel)?

Sorry but I am a little confused.....Thanks for your help guys.

Newbie - Moving Data From Excel To SQL

Nov 14, 2007

Hi there. i have the following excel spreadsheet that needs to be moved into a database:

ADDRESS
STREET

PHONE
CITY

SC-123-12

59
Bellevue Ave
Doe
Jon
(416) 123-1234
SC
M1B 1A3

SC-123-13

Most of these fields are going to be created as reference tables... and the main contact list table will only include a fk to the actual value.
eg) the contact table for the above will look like:

ADDRESS
STREET
SURNAME
GIVEN
PHONE
CITY
POSTAL

M1B 1A1

59
2
Doe
Jon
(416) 123-1234
1
M1B 1A3

6

My question is, what is the best way to move all this data into SQL Server Express?
I've been playing around with the LinkedServers section in sql and have managed to create a connection to my excel workbook. I am able to select all worksheets as tables... and i've also been able to select all records from the main contacts sheet.
not knowing any better, my initial thoughts are to create separate sql statements for each reference table.
eg) select street from excellink...contact$
and then combine it somehow with an insert statement into the streets table in my database.
Is this the right approach? if it is, can you help with the syntax of the sql statement?
Please and thanks.

Power Pivot :: Connecting To A Tabular Model - Combining With Excel Calculations

Jun 16, 2015

how to combine measures and fields coming from an analytical model (tabular) along with some Excel calculations. Basically I want to provide users with a simple report (to be displayed in SharePoint Excel services) containing charts and slicers. The data comes from a tabular model, and most of the calculations are in the model as well. However there is some little tweaking that must be done. For example I might need additional calculated columns, but I don't feel the need to modify the tabular model for that. I was wondering if I could do this within Excel as well -- but without having to bring all the data through a pivot table, then manipulate it and then show it on the report. So to be clear I do not want any pivot tables lying around, even if on a hidden sheet.

I noticed that when selecting a pivot chart in Excel, at the ribbon menu under "PIVOTCHART TOOLS"/"ANALYSE" there is a group of buttons named "Calculations". One of them is named OLAP Tools. Is it fair to assume that these options will allow me to create new measures at the Excel side, without affecting my tabular model?

HELP: How To Avoid Ridiculous System Resource Issues When Connecting To A Huge Excel File

Sep 20, 2007

Hi all,

I have a 400MB Excel file that I consume from another automated process (don't ask). I copy this file down locally to my server, and I am attempting to create an SSIS package that points to this file via a connection manager. My computer starts gobbling up massive amounts of memory (devenv.exe gets up to about 800MB or so, then drops back down to 100MB) even when I attempt to rename the connection in the connection managers tab.

I have set all BypassPrepare to TRUE and ValidateExternalMetadata properties to FALSE, and still it can take up to 3 to 6 minutes for BI Dev Studio to respond. My specs:

Intel Centrino Duo 2.00 GHz
2GB RAM
XP Pro SP2

There MUST be a way for me to work effectively on a file of this size. Please help! Thanks much for any assistance.

Sincerely,

Brian Pulliam

SQL Server Newbie Question

Jan 21, 2005

I have SQL Server 2000 installed on XP Pro and I am having problems connecting from an ASP.Net application.

The DB in question was exported from my laptop, which is running MSDE on Windows 2000. On that machine Trusted_Connection=true seems to work from the ASP.Net application whereas the SQL Server login that I set up does not.

Now that the DB has been imported to my XP machine, Trusted_Connection=true no longer seems to work. I am assuming that this may be related to the same problem I had when I was trying to use system logs - the ASPNET user does not have the same privileges on XP as it does on 2000.

In any case, I'm not too concerned at the moment how I connect, just as long as I am able. So, I again tried using the SQL login I had set up with no success.

(I added the SQL Login at the server level then I added it at the DB level and granted it public, db_datareader and db_datawriter access. Later, when that didn't work, I also granted it db_owner rights. Still no success. (BTW, I remembered to repeat these steps on my XP machine once I had imported the DB.))

Then I thought to try using 'sa'. To make sure I that remembered the sa password, I logged into Enterprise Manager (which, I assume uses Windows authentication) and changed it. Then, I went over to Web Data Administrator and tried to log in, using the SQL Login option, with sa and the password that I had just set - IT DIDN'T WORK.

Am I going mad, or is there something I'm missing?

Thanks
Martin

Newbie Set Up And Testing Server

Mar 31, 2003

My previous experience is with php and MySQL.

I currently have Apache, MySQL and php running on my local machine to enable me to test php code on localhost

I've been asked by a colleague if I'll work on an SQL 2000 database they're having trouble with. They said they will provide Visual.net, SQL 2000 and any other software I need.

I'm completely in the dark on this, but have some starting questions:

To test my code, will I need to set up a sever on localhost?

Will I need other software than Visual.net and SQL 2000? I'm using DW MX for my web stuff.

Whre can I find a basic introduction to ASP / SQL 2000 in the form of a tutorial?

How fast does this combination run? The database has 25,000 rows and 6 columns. What would be a reasonal expect time for a result?

Any help appreciated

Total Newbie To SQL Server

Sep 30, 2005

I'm in a slightly sticky situation. I recently got a job I interviewed for as a business analyst/programmer. I know quite a bit of VB 6.0 and SQL language, also enough access to build a decent database as a backend for my apps. I've recently received a 4 yr CIS degree, so I know a little about everything. I told them very clearly three times in the interview that I'd never built a SQL Server DB, but they must not have cared about that. They need someone who can program, do some DB work, and also do some business analysis. I was the best fit they could find.

After working with the group a few days, I figured out they need a data warehouse and marts to do some historical analysis, and eventually data mining and trend analysis, etc. I think they said they'd like to have that by the end of next year.

What I need now is one or two really great books to get started with, and a small synopsis on what I'm going to need as far as dev software and server specifics to get this thing off the ground. The first thing they would like to see is simply enough tables to dump data into from 4 or 5 different DBs, from which they can pull data for analysis whenever they need to do so. The total rows for this DB will be around 170mil, but with just a few measures in each row. Microsoft spreadsheet says I should expect about 5gig per year of data.

So I'm freaking out because I know ziltch about SQL Server, what tools and server set up I'm going to need, and the more I read, the less it sounds like "Oh it's not that big of a deal. It's easy", as a few friends told me.

Help!

Newbie Question About SQL Server 2005

Hi, I have a very newbie question.I have been only developing websites locally on my computer (during my learning curve) and never actually put anything up in a server on internet, but I just bought a server from discountasp.net and an extra SQL 2005 Database. Now I need to put my database on that server (copy the local one) I know I have a connection string and username and password. But I really do not have any ideas how to do this.I would appreciate if you tell me where to start and what I should do at this stage.Thank you and have a good day.
