I am designing a web app using sql server 2005 as a the backend. I have spent an enormous amount of time designing the db tables and ensured that they are normalised. Many, as you would expect have reference to what I would call indexes which are linked via foreign keys. This may be a really dumb question but.....
How do I make a lookup referential table where the integers become categories not an exact reference value (just like we do when we use vlookup in excel)?
Sorry but I am a little confused.....Thanks for your help guys.
Just a quick question, does anyone know any major issues with Migrating Sybase Databases to SQL Server? Just wondering if their any oddities I should be aware of? Thanks nixies
Hello,I have got the job to migrate data from an Excel-sheet to asql-server-database. I have a lot of experience with Access butSql-Server is not in my line.So who can give me some advice about how to do this job?thanx for your help, Helmut
Would you happen to know how one could convert some Excel spreadsheets to MSSQL? There is some commercially available software, but there must also be a way for me to manipulate the files.
I applied the following info and created an SSIS package that allows COM control of Excel:
unable to add reference to Microsoft Excel in VSA
The package runs locally, and can be executed successfully after it is migrated to the server, but both of these processes use local memory space (I think). When I try to run the package via a job, it fails with the following error:
Executed as user: ALEREsql_admin. ...on 9.00.3042.00 for 64-bit Copyright (C) Microsoft Corp 1984-2005. All rights reserved. Does anybody could show me how to connect my Excel 97 to MS SQL Server 7 using ODBC? What are the MS Office Components needed for the connection and the necesary MS SQL server component, server and client, needed?
Hi there. i have the following excel spreadsheet that needs to be moved into a database:
ADDRESS STREET SURNAME GIVEN PHONE CITY POSTAL NOTES TERR
40 Goodless Crt You M (416) 123-1234 SC M1B 1A1
SC-123-12
59 Bellevue Ave Doe Jon (416) 123-1234 SC M1B 1A3
SC-123-13
Most of these fields are going to be created as reference tables... and the main contact list table will only include a fk to the actual value. eg) the contact table for the above will look like:
ADDRESS STREET SURNAME GIVEN PHONE CITY POSTAL NOTES TERR
40 1 You M (416) 123-1234 1 M1B 1A1
5
59 2 Doe Jon (416) 123-1234 1 M1B 1A3
6
My question is, what is the best way to move all this data into SQL Server Express? I've been playing around with the LinkedServers section in sql and have managed to create a connection to my excel workbook. I am able to select all worksheets as tables... and i've also been able to select all records from the main contacts sheet. not knowing any better, my initial thoughts are to create separate sql statements for each reference table. eg) select street from excellink...contact$ and then combine it somehow with an insert statement into the streets table in my database. Is this the right approach? if it is, can you help with the syntax of the sql statement? Please and thanks.
The basic question What is the best way to export data from an excel spreadsheet into a sql server table? My Application Getting data indicating hours worked from employee timesheets into a centralised DB, then running analysis reports on it. The columns and datatypes in the excel sheet are as follows: Week (int) | EmployeeID (int) | JobNum (int) | ActivityNum (int) | Hours (int)
There will be a new excel file each week that, once the employee has filled out the data, would need to be saved and exported to the sql table. The columns in the sql table are exactly the same as the excel table with the addition of a RecordID primary key column.
Can I create a macro button that they can push when they have completed their timesheet OR would it be better to tell the employees to save copies of their timesheets in a certain folder on the company network and then run a batch on all the files in the folder at the end of the day?
Or is there another more efficient solution? Would I use SSIS for this or something else?
I've never used SSIS before and am a newbie at SQL Server too.

Hi there I sorry if I have placed this query in the wrong place. I'm getting to grips with ASP.net 2, slowly but surely! When i try to access my site which uses a Sql Server 2005 express DB i am receiving the following error:

This is the connection string that I am using: <connectionStrings> <add name="ConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|ASPNETDB.MDF;Integrated Security=True;Initial Catalog=ASPNETDB;User Instance=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/> </connectionStrings>
The database is definitly in the folder that the error message relates to. What I'm finding confusing is that the connection string seems to be finding "aranga"s database. Is it something daft?
Dear Readers,Is it possible, like in Access, to link to tables in other SQL databases that are on the same server? I have a query that I originally had in Access that queered from multiply databases. It did this by having those other tables in the other databases linked to the database that had the query.
I just restored my SQL server 2000 database on the SQL server 2005. after this i ran the Service broker sample ("Hello World") on this database by changing the AdventureWorks name to the new database name. The "setup.sql" runs fine. When i run the "SendMessage.sql" i was not getting any rows in the output (The message was not getting inserted into the queue). I checked the Service broker is enabled on this databased using the query "select is_broker_enabled from sys.databases where name = 'newdbname' " It was 1. I even tried the ALTER DATABASE SET ENABLE_BROKER. but it didnt work.
When i tried the sample on a newly created database it worked fine.
Is there any solution to make the restored database to work for service broker.
I cannot get the SQL Server Upgrade Wizard to work!!
I have one machine with NT 4 (SP4) and SQL 6.5 and another machine with NT 4 (SP4) and SQL 7.0 (new install, never had SQL 6.5 one it). I want to upgrade a database to 7.0.
Each machine can 'see' the other via shares and even trying to register a SQL database in each other machines Enterprize manager (although that fails because they are different versions of SQL) Using the Upgrade Wizard, on the third screen, where you specify the Server Name for the export server, it even has the other server's name in the dropdown list {I never even put it in}. And yet, after I set the export server name and put in the database SA account password and then put in the SA account password for the local server (the one that is running the Upgrade Wizard). After I select next, I get a message that states... 'Unable to connect to Export Server. Please verify that you are an NT administrator on that machine.'
These are standalone servers. Not BDC's. I am logged into each machine as the administrator. I have tried adjusting the SQL services to allow logging as the System Account and the administrator account and a whole bunch of options.... but I can't get it to work. HELP!!! This shouldn't be this hard.... should it???
I run SQL 6.5 on an NT 4.0 platform in a client/server environment with Windows 95 as the clients. I use VB 6.0 as my user interface with Access 97 utilizing DAO (yes, still DAO) for the ODBC connection to the SQL server. When I install SQL 7.0 and move my data to it, can I refresh my links in Access 97 from ODBC to OLE DB and automatically take advantage of the new connection, or do I have to rewrite my queries to take use OLE DB rather than DAO? Thanks for any suggestions and help.
I currently have a MS Access database that will eventually be migrated to MS SQL Server. There won't be an application now, just the database and the reports. My doubts are on how easy this transition will be. 1 - After I build all the database with tables and relationships, is there a tool that helps me to import data? 2 - Is there a way to insert the data on the database other than writing the SQL codes, I mean maybe creating some 'forms'? 3 - Once the data is in, it there a way for me to create report on the SQL Server itself or do I need a report generator like Cristal Reports for example; 4 - If yes, then how easy it is to integrate them; 5 - Is it complicated to generate these reports or it is pretty much the same interface as in Access or Delphi?
I have an ms sql 2000 db which I am migrating from one shared environment to another. How specifcally can I do this?
I have a copy of enterprise but not a full version of SQL on my local desktop. The hosting company from which I am moving has placed the db as a zip file on the root of my site via ftp. I have unzipped it and it appears as a backup copy (.bak).
I appreciate any detail steps, I assume via enterprise, that anyone can give me. Thank you.
I am very new to SQL so please bear with me. I have an SQL 2000 server running on Windows 2000 server in an NT4.0 Domain. We are planning to migrate (not upgrade!) everything to a new WIndows 2003 AD environment using ADMT. I wanted to know if there are any issues with the migration of an SQL server if we are to move forward with this strategy. I have heard that an SQL database keeps domain related information within its database and wanted to know if this is true.
Hi, I need to migrate db,Im planning to use attach & detach option. Is there any cons in migrating the databases(32 bit,not clustered ,sql 2005) to databases(64 bit, clustered, sql 2005).What are the things do i need to take care of?what are the things do i need to do after the migration?
Trying to upload excel in server where excel is not installed. BIDs was there in the server, when i am trying to craete Excel source I am not able.what the workround for this.. How to upload excel without excel installed on the server.
I am using a Excel Source to get the data from an excel file to sql server 2005 table. A couple columns are coming in a double precision float, but some values have characters in them, but those values are coming out as null, even though I changed the datatype from float to unicode string. Any inputs on resolving this will be much appreciated.
We have 10 sheets in Excel File and 10 sheet contains errror data. How to load 9 sheets data in to 1 destination and error data in to other destination?
I am trying to get the contents of the Excel Files dynamically and dumping into the SQL Database using SSIS. Through WMI Event Watcher, I could find when one or more Excel files dumped in a particular folder and using ForEach Loop Container I was able to take all the filenames and pass it through Variables. But at the same time in the Data Flow, I have to pass each Sheet of an Excel File to the Excel Source control and export the data to my SQL Database using OLEDB Destination.
For that I need to get the names of each sheets in an Excel File and pass it to the Excel Source Control through variables. But when I give Data Access Mode as "Table name or view name variable" and provide the variable name in that, then it is giving an error message as "A destination table name has not been provided".
And at the same time, Since I was not able to provide an static Filename (as I am passing through Variables), when I tried to map the columns in the OleDB Destination, it is not allowing me to map the columns.
So all these things I should do at Run-time using Variables in SSIS. I don't want to hard-code any filenames or Sheet names. If any one of you have a solution, please share with me.
l've some excel files controlled by Vendor which changing frequently. The only thing does not change is the header name of each column.
So my question is, is there any way to create a new table based on the excel file selected including the column name in SSIS? So that l can use the data reader as source to select those columns l am interested on and start the integration.
i have an SSIS package that exports to an excel file. This works fine. the problem is that it appends the data instead of overwriting the file. Is there any way to overwrite the file like you can with a flat file? I have to email the file everyweek and don't want to have to clear it out manually. Any help would be appreciated
I have a problem with retreving a excel data through excel source component.
I have source component as Excel Source which will connect to my .xls sheet. To retrieve the values from the sheet i am using a query as, "SELECT F14,F3 FROM [Charac Defn & Assgnment$]"
The column F14 is not formatted so that the format of the cell is "General" I have a different type of values in the F14 column such as "PE","PES",15,20,20.00,8888.9999 etc.. While i click on preview button of Excel source it shows only the text values and not the int or decimal values, its returning NULL for those cells. I tried to use convert function, its throwing an error as
TITLE: Microsoft Visual Studio ------------------------------ There was an error displaying the preview. ------------------------------ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Undefined function 'Convert' in expression. (Microsoft JET Database Engine)
Is there any other function to change the format of the cell or i need to some thing else Please help me how to solve this issue.
When I open the spreadsheet in Excel 2000, it works fine. When I try to print, it crashes Excel. In testing, I narrowed it down to the Header/Footer, because it also crashes when I go to Page Setup and click on the header/footer tab.
However, I can print the same spreasheet from Excel 2007.
Am I just dealing with a "you need to upgrade all your clients" situation, or is there a known issue with certian formatting that is passed out with reports that is not supported by older versions of Excel?
I am using Reporting Services 2005 SP2 to serve up the report that is exported to Excel.
I have ssis package where I have excel connection manager with expression pointing to a variable which has path for location and name of excel spreadsheet to be create each with date on the name.ExcelFilePath points to variable for shared location where excel file will be saved.I have File system task for copying template excel file to destination location with date in file name.I drag and drop excel destination. Pointed to excel connection manager. Under data access mode, I have select table and view. When I try to select name of excel sheet, it says, no tables or views could be loaded. I should be able to see sheetname there so that I can map column. I only have option to create new spreadsheet. I want to use template to load data in excel file. I dont want to create new sheet. It was working before. But I opened the ssis package and its broken. I was able to see spreadsheet name before but I dont see it now even though I have not made any change to package. XCEL 12.0 XML;HDR=NO";
I am creating an SSIS package witha a Dataflow task, which reads from an Excel source and then uses script component to dumpt the data to multiple tables in Sql Server database
I need to some how make my Excel source dynamic, that is my excel template which i would be using to map the excel columns to script component's input columns would be dynamic..
In other words, I should be able to define the Excel Source, Column Mapping Information, Precedence constraint to the Script component dynamically
I've developed a website and it's hosted by a hosting company. Lately i've registered a new domain with a new virtual hosting account. I've transfered my web files succesfully. But migrating the sql server failed for a couple of times now. My database containes many tables with many products. My hosting provides doesn't give me the opportuniy to restore my backup which i've backuped from my old server. First I tried to use the import and export tool of sql server 2005. This was very easy and it succeeded. But this tool only migrates the tables and the views. All the common stored procedures of asp.net membership are not exported. So I can't login at the moment. I've tried to generate a sql script with all the stored procedures with sql server management studio. But If i want to run this script on my new db, it fails with various errors. I tried to use the aspnet_regsql tool to create all the membership tables and stored procedures. If this succeeds, I can import and export my old db to the new one. But i'm getting a error while trying to use the aspnet_regsql tool. The error number is 290 and the error is: How can I fix this? We are looking to migrate an entire server with several databases which collectively contain every user in the company. Obviously, I would prefer to directly migrate the logins without having to make everyone reset their own passwords. Anyone know of a way to do this?
I tried dts'ing the syslogins table but it fails due to password collumn being read only.
Hello! We are planning migrating to different server. I know the answers how to migrate all jobs and DTS packages. But the only question I have is "How to migrate logins and passwords?"
What is the best way to transfer logins? Can't you just export syslogins table into text file and then import it into the new server?
Has anybody been successful migrating userids from one server to another server using SQL7.0? If so, is anyone willing to please provide any sample scripts.
