Newbie Question ---> Exporting Tables
Sep 3, 2002
Hi all...
I noticed that when transferring tables from the local server to the remote server that some colums lost its properties ... For example, If I am sepcifying a column to have identity seed and identity increment, it is transferred to the server without these properties...
How make a carbon copy of tables from my local to the remote server ?
Thanks in advance

Using SQL Server 2005 Standard
The basic question
What is the best way to export data from an excel spreadsheet into a sql server table?
My Application
Getting data indicating hours worked from employee timesheets into a centralised DB, then running analysis reports on it.
The columns and datatypes in the excel sheet are as follows:
Week (int) | EmployeeID (int) | JobNum (int) | ActivityNum (int) | Hours (int)
There will be a new excel file each week that, once the employee has filled out the data, would need to be saved and exported to the sql table. The columns in the sql table are exactly the same as the excel table with the addition of a RecordID primary key column.
Can I create a macro button that they can push when they have completed their timesheet OR would it be better to tell the employees to save copies of their timesheets in a certain folder on the company network and then run a batch on all the files in the folder at the end of the day?
Or is there another more efficient solution? Would I use SSIS for this or something else?
I've never used SSIS before and am a newbie at SQL Server too.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

I am trying to learn SQL 2005 Express and I am having a problem exporting (if that is the correct word) a table to Excel.
I have created a view in the Northwind database called MyCustomerView and want to practice working with the table.
From the command prompt:
bcp Northwind.dbo.MyCustomerView out MCV.xls -S -T
I then get the error message:
c:> bcp Northwind.dbo.MyCustomerView out MCV.xls -S -T
SQLState = 08001, NativeError = 10061
Error = [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]TCP Provider: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.

SQLState = 08001, NativeError = 10061
Error = [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
This is on a single machine running Widows XP Home.

I've been tasked with the following: Export data from old table, to newly created table(s). I say tables because there's three destination tables total, and only two source tables. The two old tables are virtually the same, so the new table will be a combination of the two. More importantly I'll need to chop out some data from the old tables and create new details with them. As you can see, the old table was very "flat" in the sense that they kept adding new fields for bits of detail data (10 for one type of detail, 15 for another type of detail). I'd like to house that data in separate linkable tables. This is an example of the old and new data structure:
OldTable1 (SOURCE)
Name | Acct | Detail1Min | Detail1Max | ~~~ | Detail10Min | Detail10Max | DiffDetail1Min | DiffDetail1Max | DiffDetail1Rate | ~~~ | DiffDetail15Min | DiffDetail15Max | DiffDetail15Rate |
OldTable2 (SOURCE)
Name | Acct | Detail1Min | Detail1Max | ~~~ | Detail10Min | Detail10Max | DiffDetail1Min | DiffDetail1Max | DiffDetail1Rate | ~~~ | DiffDetail15Min | DiffDetail15Max | DiffDetail15Rate |
| | |
| | |
VVV
NewTable (Destination)
AutoID | Name | Acct | TYPE | * Newly created field so I know which table it came from (OldTable1 or OldTable2?)
NewTableDetail (Destination)
AutoID | NewTableID | DetailMin | DetailMax |
NewTableDiffDetail (Destination)
AutoID | NewTableID | DiffDetailMin | DiffDetailMax | DiffDetailMax |
In the new data structure, the AutoID from the main table (NewTable) will link to the two newly created detail tables using NewTableID.

Hello Everybody,
Not sure if this is the correct Forum, anyway lemme me know your views. I
have SQL Server running in two remote machines (in different geographical
locations). I need to import a database from one SQL Server
installation to another installation. What is best possible solution:
1) Transfering the .mdf and .ldf file from one installation to another installation
2) Generating the records of all the tables in the database to a common
file format CSV and then loading it in destination database. If this is
ok then how to generate import and export data using CSV format
3) Any other options?

Hi. I just set up my first sql server database and I've managed to connect to it via ASP as a test.
I'm not sure how to add data to my tables. In MS Access, you can edit the table and add records. How do I do that in SQL Server?
I'm using the Enterprise manager tool to create tables.... does it have something i can use?
Thanks

Hi,
I am new to SQL and these forums, and have a quick simple question.
I am trying to view the records that do not match in 2 tables. I have tried a few different ways but keep getting results in the hundreds of thousands and the table only has 36 thousand reocrds.
Here is an example of what the two tables contain.
Table 1
customer_no eaddress_no name address (36000 records)
Table2
customer_no eaddress_no email (17000 records)
I need to find out which customers are not in table 2 by linking the eaddress_no numbers.
This is one of the scripts i ran that gives me the large results with a ton of dups:
SELECT *
FROM T_EADDRESS inner JOIN
T_CUST_LOGIN ON T_EADDRESS.eaddress_no
!= T_CUST_LOGIN.eaddress_no
Thanks in advance for any help with this.

Dear All,
I am working on a project to migrate a .net desktop application to web based application using ASP.NET 2.0.
The present app has lots of tables with data in sql server 2000. The new app is to have Oracle 10.2 G as data store.
Although the data store is being changed most of the tables in the present database will remain same along with the data they hold.
My problem is:
1) how to transfer the tables to the new datastore 10.2 G in an automated way?
After all it's not possible to create each table afresh in Oracle and then insert records into each table one by one. If that is done it will take atleast few months if not years.
2) can I export the tables to a xml file and then import it from Oracle. How to do that?
It has become a nightmare for me.
Pls suggest the easiest way and which takes the minimum time.
A solution to the problem will be gratefully accepted.
Thanks.

I need to export data from multiple tables into one single file. The big problem here is that the tables will have different column types.
I am attempting to create something that allows users to be able to send me the contents of their tables's, through either email or ftp. I would prefer to make it easier for them so they only have to deal with one file, instead of the multiple files that bcp and dts create when exporting from multiple tables.
I was thinking of using DTS or BCP and then join (append) the files (either zip them or append the files together in some fashion), but I was hoping that there was an easier method out there.
Any ideas on how I may accomplish this would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,
I'm fairly new to MS SQL & I have a problem copying tables from one d/b to another. When I do an import or export select Copy tables, the tables & the data get transferred, but all the Identities are set to NO. My D/Bs have 188 tables & it's a pain to reset all of them manually.
Is there a setting I don't know about that will transfer the tables & maintain the Identity?
(I'm using SQL Server Management Studio 9.0)

Hi.
I've tried to create a SSIS package to simply export a bunch of tables as flat files, and am having troubles because when the for each loop hits the second table the column mappings in the flat file destination are not synchronised with its schema.
I created a for each loop with an enumerator that returns the table names and sets a user variable.
I created a data flow task which dynamically connects to the table name variable.
In the Flat File Destination there is a column mapping property, but I don't know how to reset these mappings on each iteration.
Any ideas?

I am transferring data from Oracle tables into text files, and facing these errors.
1. I have a varaible working as an expression and my query goes into that variable and onwards that variable is passed to dataflow task, which parse the query. my query is simple saying "Select * from PLS.ABC" where PLS is my schema, but the task generates error "Opening a rowset for "Select * from PLS.ABC" failed. check that the table exists in the database. and surely the table is there.
2. I have a foreach loop that iterates through all the table names and the table names are passed onwards to the varaible query, the dataflow task inside the foreach loop gets the variable query and will generate text files based on tablenames which i have supplied in another variable to the connectionstring property of the flatfile destination. Is it possible or not. all the tables have different columns and i need the output in text files.

Hi All,
We are post-deployment with a serious reporting issue that's causing us to rethink our reporting solution. We're considering moving from what we have to SQL Server Reporting Services (client side).
I have spent the past couple of days getting up to speed on this feature and seeing if we can easily migrate it into our existing application. However, I've hit a couple of stumbling blocks and was hoping perhaps someone here could either tell me the solution or point me in the right direction.
I'm not having any problems creating basic reports (e.g. flat data).
However, I am having problems creating reports where there are related tables in a dataset.
The way it works with our existing solution is that I get a dataset (which contains several data tables) and point it to the report's datasource. That report expects those tables and I have defined table-relationships in the report which process and display the information correctly.
I'm not having as much luck with RDLC.
I can go into futher detail about how I'm creating the report, but let me just ask these general questions first:
1. Can I set a dataset containing multiple datatables equal to a property on an RDLC report and that RDLC report know how to treat and display the data?
2. Is there a better/smarter than this to get a field selection from my datasource (remember, this information is coming from a stored procedure so connecting directly to the database is not an option):
a. In code, populate dataset
b. In code, write dataset schema to xml (e.g. an xsd file)
c. In Visual Studio, add the XSD file to project
d. Use fields from XSD file to drag and drop fields on report
A fancy example would be nice too. I've googled like crazy the past couple of days and downloaded as many samples as I can find (including the ones on ftponline.com, gotreportviewer.com, "Tudor's WebLog", and several others). However, I have yet to find one that uses grouping and related datatables.
Thank you so much (if, for nothing else, reading this post )

Is it something daft?

I'm new to my company, although not new to SQL 2005 and I found something interesting. I don't have an ERD yet, and so I was asking a co-worker what table some data was in, they told me a table that is NOT in SQL Server 2005's list of tables, views or synonyms.
I thought that was strange, and so I searched over and over again and still I couldn't find it. Then I did a select statement the table that Access thinks exists and SQL Server does not show and to my shock, the select statement pulled in data!
So how did this happen? How can I find the object in SSMS folder listing of tables/views or whatever and what am I overlooking?
Thanks,
Keith

Hopefully this is the right place to post this, I am trying to learn ADO.Net programming using VWD Express with SQL Express... I tried to do the walk-through tutorial on ADO.Net through the asp.net tutorial. The walk-through asked you to download and install a script (check) then it said to open a command window with sql server running (check) and then to copy all of this special script code into to bind the database to the web page (not check). Everything pretty much went down hill after that part. I couldn't get the Update/Cancel/Delete buttons. After that dissapointing attempt at learning I decided to just try and make my own database. All was going pretty well until I try to add the UPDATE/DELETE fields after adding the WHERE clause. No go.
So, I don't know if I'm just totally flubbing this up or if this is a common problem. Do I need the two or three pages of custom script like the Microsoft example to make a database work?
Please help!!!

I need to know how to write a sql statement for VB to Microsoft Access for the following criteria.
TblEmployees only Field to be concerned with is EmployeeID -Its PK
TblEmpAttendane has these fields:
EntryID - Pk
EmployeeID - Fk
Date- A text form date validated through vb to avoid hassle
Value-A single digit value that can be alpha OR numeric
To get the Date range for the current month I use variables to store the First and last day of the month(in a CUSTOM calendar control).
I have been trying to use this Sql statement(that wont work):
SqlString = "SELECT * FROM TblEmpAttendance WHERE Date BETWEEN '" & FirstDay & "' AND '" & LastDay & "'"
I need to:
1.)using the current EmployeeID (from TblEmployees)
2.) find the same EmployeeID in TblEmpAttendance
3.)Get the date range for the current month and year(valid days currnt mo.)
-these date are supplied by the variables "FirstDay" AND "LastDay" as seen in above SqlString
4.) Find the Values associated with the dates and EmployeeID

Hi
I have two problems. I am currently using SQL Server express and SQL Server Management Studio Express locally. i have a DotNetNuke website running on the web with IHostASP.Net
Story:
I noticed that my SQL Server 2005 database with IHostASP.net was 350MB. It was only 22 2 months ago and I have had about 100 users sign up. I then connected to my live database via SQL Server Management Studio Express and shrunk the database. No errors and the database was reduced to 24MB - Great I thought!
I went and checked the website and all was great for about an hour then the site went down with the following error:
Error The transaction log for database 'classcampers' is full. To find out why space in the log cannot be reused, see the log_reuse_wait_desc column in sys.databases
Anyone know what to do.
Anyway, I have downloaded a .bak of my database as supplied by my host. However I cant figure out to restore this file back to my live database. What are the steps involved?
Do I create a new local database from the .bak and then somhow restore this back to my live one, or do i apply this .bak file strainght to my live database using SQLMSE. Any tutorials becuase I have been trying to apply this restore all day
Thansk for any advice in advance
cheers

I finally decided to do our ASP application using VB, .NET and MSSQL.
My questions are simple, but I cannot find all the answers, so anything you can offer will be greatly appreciated.
Please explain how licenses (CALS) work with regard to Windows Server and MSSQL. For example, suppose we have 200 clients all logged into our application, but only say 40 are currently active (meaning they are adding data, running reports, etc....), but they are not all clicking the "DO" button at the same time. So how many Windows server and/or MSSQL seats, licenses, CALS, cpu's etc.... (whatever they are called) will I need?
How many users do you think a "well designed" ASP application built using AJAX, ActiveX, VB, .NET and MSSQL can a single cpu reasonably support? This application will serve east coast to west coast with heavy traffic from say 7am to 9am and 2pm to 4pm in each time zone. At what point (or what should I look for) to say, you need more memory, more processors, more servers, etc......????
How does one protect (or build in) a method to deal with index corruptions, etc???? Does that occur in MSSQL? If so, generally, what are causes and fixes?
The application will serve many chapters. Many chapters will be solo (by themselves), but we also expect district wide, where multiple chapters (25 to 75) in one district will use the application. We can expect, during time frames mentioned above, that each chapter will have 200 to 400 transactions per am time and same per pm time.
has anyone had great success with IronSpeed?
Lastly, can anyone suggest some good windows web hosting companies?
Thank you.

Hi i have 2 columns in the same table.....one column retrieves all registered students, the other column retrieved registered students but who have not completed a required survey.
The 2 sql statements are almost the same except that the 2nd one does another comparison at another table....(i.e. where student_id not in (select student_id from other_t).
I am trying to combine the 2 sql statements into a derived table where results will be displayed as follows:
registered students | students(incomplete surveys)
studA, studB, studC | studB
studC, studD, studE | studD, studE
is there any way to do it?
