Hi I just installed sql server 2005 for the first time today. Anyways I have a bunch of stored procs from an application i developed on the SQL 2000 server. Anyways I am having a problem with one of my stored procedures.
CREATE PROCEDURE ProvinceRetrieveAdHoc
(@whereClause VARCHAR(256))
AS
EXEC("SELECT * FROM tblProvince WHERE " + @whereClause)
RETURN
GO
However this isn't working, I am getting this error:
Incorrect syntax near 'SELECT * FROM tblProvince WHERE '.
Now I am guessing the EXEC statement must have changed, as every stored proc that uses the exec command errors out with this same error. All my other procedures run just fine. Can anyone please tell me how to fix it?
Does a user running a stored procedure lock other users from running it until it's finished?
I mean it's threaded right? Two people can be at different stages within the same proc and there's no guarantee that just because user1 started it that user2 won't finish first correct?
I've never used stored procedures before and I was hoping someone might be able to clear up my confusion. First off, can you create stored procedures in RS? If not, why is there the 'stored procedure' option as under the command type dropdown? As well, if if stored procedures aren't created in RS and are created through SSMS, when are they executed? Can you pass report parameters to stored procedures that way?
I want to know the differences between SQL Server 2000 storedprocedures and oracle stored procedures? Do they have differentsyntax? The concept should be the same that the stored proceduresexecute in the database server with better performance? Please advise good references for Oracle stored procedures also.thanks!!
This Might be a really simple thing, however we have just installed SQL server 2005 on a new server, and are having difficulties with the set up of the Store Procedures. Every time we try to modify an existing stored procedure it attempts to save it as an SQL file, unlike in 2000 where it saved it as part of the database itself.
Using SQL 2005, SP2. All of a sudden, whenever I create any stored procedures in the master database, they get created as system stored procedures. Doesn't matter what I name them, and what they do.
For example, even this simple little guy:
CREATE PROCEDURE BOB
AS
PRINT 'BOB'
GO
Gets created as a system stored procedure.
Any ideas what would cause that and/or how to fix it?
Hi All:First of all, I wanna say that I am very new to Stored Procedure, so pardon me for asking questions that seemed like an ABC questions.Alright, so I am creating this login page for my users. They provide their username and pwd. Upon clicking the Login button, some codes were supposed to see if the username exists in the stored procedure. If it is, a welcome message with their username is posted else, an error message will be posted.I've created my stored procedure: (so far, this is what I know)create procedure sp_testing @username varchar(20),@pwd varchar(16) as select userName from testingwhere userName = @userName and password = @pwdYup, I am stuck! Haha. I tried to write some codes on my code-behind, but there's an error or it doesn't work.I hope you all know what I am trying to say. So basically, the inputs are only the username and pwd. But I've been cracking up with these stuffs for three days and still have no luck. Could anyone out there help me?Thanks a lot!
I'm looking to write my first stored procedure. I need to find out the Identity for a record that I just did an INSERT on. I've achieved the proper outcome with a second query, but I'd really like to use a SP here. I think I could use some instance of the @@identity method in SQLServer 7. Can anyone offer some suggestions? Thanks
ok before you laugh, let me explain. I am running this Stored Proc because the program i need to use the update statement wont let me execute a simple update statement so i figured i would give it a shot and try to trick it by running the values into a stored procedure.
here is a copy of the stored procedure
CREATE PROCEDURE sparCloseProject
( @iProjectNo as VarChar )
AS
UPDATE tPA00175 SET siJobStatus='4' Where chrJobNumber='@iProjectNo'
GO
yes it is just an update statement but when i debug it, it aborts with this message.
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]String data, right truncation
I am very new to stored procs and i was hoping someone could help me with this one. what am i doing wrong? i cant even really debug as it aborts before any actual debugging. thanks alot
I am trying to write a stored procedure to do the following below:
The printed check file has a name that looks like this: A111111B222222222C3333333333D50E50.PDF.* In the example name above, 111111 is the check number, 2222222222 is the routing number and 3333333333 is the account number.
The letters define the piece of data that follows.* * ·******** A = Check number ·******** B = Routing number ·******** C = Account number
Steps: a. stored procedure to pull the check number, routing number and account number from tblCheckRegister. b. Join them together in proper format. b. Once it has done that, do a wildcard search on a table called tblSIValidate column SIBarCode. c. The return value should be the entire SIBarCode column.* Append the .PDF to it and look in the same image directory as the cancelled check.
I am used to VB.net and vbscripting and the syntax there. I am sure there are things below in the stored procedure that are not correct. Any help is appreciated.
I have a query that select rows from the employees,salary_head and salary_group tables this is the query SELECT TOP 100 PERCENT dbo.salary_head.salary_group_id, dbo.salary_group.salary_group, dbo.salary_head.amount, dbo.grade_level.[level], dbo.employees.employ_name, dbo.employees.work_id, dbo.employees.company_id, dbo.employees.designation, dbo.salary_head.level_id, dbo.employees.terminate, dbo.employees.banks_id, dbo.employees.bank_account_no FROM dbo.employees INNER JOIN dbo.salary_head INNER JOIN dbo.salary_group ON dbo.salary_head.salary_group_id = dbo.salary_group.salary_group_id ON dbo.employees.level_id = dbo.salary_head.level_id INNER JOIN dbo.grade_level ON dbo.employees.level_id = dbo.grade_level.level_id ORDER BY dbo.grade_level.level_no DESC, dbo.salary_head.salary_group_id i also have a table called payrollers1 with the following fields payroll_id int auto period_id int employee_id level_id designation_id banks_id bankaccount_no salarygroup_id AmountI am trying to write a stored procedure that will run the above query and then insert the values of the employee_id,level_id,designation_id,salary_group_i d,amount rows into the payroller table. As for the period_id i want the Stored procedure to look up the max payperiod_id value in the payperiod table. I am totally new to stored procedure and do not know how to write this code. Can somebody help me with this code.
Hi everybody. I am not sure if I'm even posting in the right forum... I tried my best.
I need to write a stored procedure that'll work with two values, @FromValue and @ToValue.
In Query Analyzer, when this stored procedure is executed with user-given values (@FromValue/@ToValue), I need it to loop until the program reaches the ToValue number.
Lets say I executed the SP with given values @FromValue = 1 and @ToValue = 5, the result should be
1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Listing out all numbers 1 to 5, with a comma and space after each number.
OK, I have read a ton of posting on this issue, but either they don't give enough information or they are for packages which use the Execute SQL command, whereas I am using the OLE DB Command Data Flow Transformation.
I have an Excel spreadsheet that we are receiving from agencies with rows of client data which I have to load into an application that is ready to go live. I also have a stored procedure spClientsInsertRcd, which was written for the application. In the normal flow of the application, the stored procedure is called from a Coldfusion page, which does some processing prior to calling it. So, I have written a 'wrapper' stored procedure, spImportAgencyData, which does the processing and then calls the spClientInsertRcd.
My dataflow has the following components:
An Excel Source, containing my test data, consisting of just one row of data,
which points to a
Derived Column Transformation, which reformats the SSN and adds a user variable, named returnValue with an Expression value of @[User::returnvariable] set to a four-byte signed integer, which (i think) I need to get the value out of the stored procedure.
which points to a
Data Conversion Transformation, which takes care of all the datatype conversions
which points to a
OLE DB Command, which contains the following as the SQL Command:
In the OLE DB Command, I have mapped returnValue, my user variable to @RETURN_VALUE.
Right now, I am in initial testing. The dataflow shows that it is succeeding, but my one data record for testing is not getting inserted. I need to get the value of returnValue to figure out what is happening.
How do I get the value of the returnValue? I have tried putting a recordset destination after the OLE DB command, but that just gives me the data that went into the OLE DB Command.
How do I search for and print all stored procedure names in a particular database? I can use the following query to search and print out all table names in a database. I just need to figure out how to modify the code below to search for stored procedure names. Can anyone help me out? SELECT TABLE_SCHEMA + '.' + TABLE_NAME FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLES WHERE TABLE_TYPE = 'BASE TABLE'
Seems like I'm stealing all the threads here, : But I need to learn :) I have a StoredProcedure that needs to return values that other StoredProcedures return.Rather than have my DataAccess layer access the DB multiple times, I would like to call One stored Procedure, and have that stored procedure call the others to get the information I need. I think this way would be more efficient than accessing the DB multiple times. One of my SP is:SELECT I.ItemDetailID, I.ItemDetailStatusID, I.ItemDetailTypeID, I.Archived, I.Expired, I.ExpireDate, I.Deleted, S.Name AS 'StatusName', S.ItemDetailStatusID, S.InProgress as 'StatusInProgress', S.Color AS 'StatusColor',T.[Name] AS 'TypeName', T.Prefix, T.Name AS 'ItemDetailTypeName', T.ItemDetailTypeID FROM [Item].ItemDetails I INNER JOIN Item.ItemDetailStatus S ON I.ItemDetailStatusID = S.ItemDetailStatusID INNER JOIN [Item].ItemDetailTypes T ON I.ItemDetailTypeID = T.ItemDetailTypeID However, I already have StoredProcedures that return the exact same data from the ItemDetailStatus table and ItemDetailTypes table.Would it be better to do it above, and have more code to change when a new column/field is added, or more checks, or do something like:(This is not propper SQL) SELECT I.ItemDetailID, I.ItemDetailStatusID, I.ItemDetailTypeID, I.Archived, I.Expired, I.ExpireDate, I.Deleted, EXEC [Item].ItemDetailStatusInfo I.ItemDetailStatusID, EXEC [Item].ItemDetailTypeInfo I.ItemDetailTypeID FROM [Item].ItemDetails IOr something like that... Any thoughts?
I have MSSQL 2005. On earlier versions of MSSQL saving a stored procedure wasn't a confusing action. However, every time I try to save my completed stored procedure (parsed successfully ) I'm prompted to save it as a query on the hard drive.
How do I cause the 'Save' action to add the new stored procedure to my database's list of stored procedures?
We recently upgraded to SQL Server 2005. We had several stored procedures in the master database and, rather than completely rewriting a lot of code, we just recreated these stored procedures in the new master database.
For some reason, some of these stored procedures are getting stored as "System Stored Procedures" rather than just as "Stored Procedures". Queries to sys.Objects and sys.Procedures shows that these procs are being saved with the is_ms_shipped field set to 1, even though they obviously were not shipped with the product.
I can't update the sys.Objects or sys.Procedures views in 2005.
What effect will this flag (is_ms_shipped = 1) have on my stored procedures?
Can I move these out of "System Stored Procedures" and into "Stored Procedures"?
I just created a stored procedure in SQL Server 2005 management studio. I went to my db and expanded the programmability folder then right clicked the stored procedures folder and created a stored procedure. I saved the procedure as sp_getDistance in the default folder SQL managment studio picked. Now when I went back to that stored procedure folder I did not see my stored procedure sp_getDistance, all that was there was the system stored procedure folder. Did I save the stored procedure in the wrong place, or what did I do wrong. I can't find the procedure anywhere, its just sitting in my My DocumentsSQL Server Management StudioProjectssp_getDistance.sql folder. Thanks,Kyle Spitzer
I have two tables. UserIds is a collection of users, with UserId as the primary key. Contacts simply maps pairs of users. Think of it like IM, where one user can have multiple contacts.
Contacts ------------- UserId - int, the UserId of the user who has the contact ContactUserId - int, the UserId of the contact
I also have a stored procedure named GetConnectedUserIds that returns all the contacts of a given user. It takes a single parameter, @UserId, the UserId of the user whose contacts I want to get. That's pretty simple:
SELECT ContactUserId FROM Contacts WHERE UserId=@UserId.
Now here's where I get over my head. I actually want that stored procedure to return the user's contacts AND the user's own ID. I want the SELECT statement above, but tack on @UserId to the end of it.
How do I do that?
Thanks in advance for any help. Feel free to answer here or to point me to a useful resource.
I am writing a set of store procedures (around 30), most of them require the same basic logic to get an ID, I was thinking to add this logic into an stored procedure.
The question is: Would calling an stored procedure from within an stored procedure affect performance? I mean, would it need to create a separate db connection? am I better off copying and pasting the logic into all the store procedures (in terms of performance)?
Hi all - I'm trying to optimized my stored procedures to be a bit easier to maintain, and am sure this is possible, not am very unclear on the syntax to doing this correctly. For example, I have a simple stored procedure that takes a string as a parameter, and returns its resolved index that corresponds to a record in my database. ie exec dbo.DeriveStatusID 'Created' returns an int value as 1 (performed by "SELECT statusID FROM statusList WHERE statusName= 'Created') but I also have a second stored procedure that needs to make reference to this procedure first, in order to resolve an id - ie: exec dbo.AddProduct_Insert 'widget1' which currently performs:SET @statusID = (SELECT statusID FROM statusList WHERE statusName='Created')INSERT INTO Products (productname, statusID) VALUES (''widget1', @statusID) I want to simply the insert to perform (in one sproc): SET @statusID = EXEC deriveStatusID ('Created')INSERT INTO Products (productname, statusID) VALUES (''widget1', @statusID) This works fine if I call this stored procedure in code first, then pass it to the second stored procedure, but NOT if it is reference in the second stored procedure directly (I end up with an empty value for @statusID in this example). My actual "Insert" stored procedures are far more complicated, but I am working towards lightening the business logic in my application ( it shouldn't have to pre-vet the data prior to executing a valid insert). Hopefully this makes some sense - it doesn't seem right to me that this is impossible, and am fairly sure I'm just missing some simple syntax - can anyone assist?
Hi there I sorry if I have placed this query in the wrong place. I'm getting to grips with ASP.net 2, slowly but surely! When i try to access my site which uses a Sql Server 2005 express DB i am receiving the following error:

This is the connection string that I am using: <connectionStrings> <add name="ConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|ASPNETDB.MDF;Integrated Security=True;Initial Catalog=ASPNETDB;User Instance=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/> </connectionStrings>
The database is definitly in the folder that the error message relates to. What I'm finding confusing is that the connection string seems to be finding "aranga"s database. Is it something daft?
i have created the folowing function but keep geting an error.
Only functions and extended stored procedures can be executed from within a function.
Why am i getting this error!
Create Function myDateAdd (@buildd nvarchar(4), @avdate as nvarchar(25)) Returns nvarchar(25) as Begin declare @ret nvarchar(25) declare @sqlval as nvarchar(3000)

i need to use only one stored procedure and access many tablesso how write a stored procedure for that dohelp me looking forward for a reply to the earliest i am developing web page using asp.net using c# and sqlserver as backend
Hello I have two stored procedures @ID INT AS SELECT (CASE WHEN NUM >= 10 THEN CAST(PAID AS FLOAT) / CAST(NUM AS FLOAT) * 100 WHEN NUM < 10 THEN 0 END) AS PER FROM (SELECT (SELECT COUNT(*) AS Expr1 FROM Event_data AS D LEFT OUTER JOIN Events AS E ON E.id = D.Event_id WHERE (D.Transaction_type = 1) AND (D.Player_id = @ID)) AS NUM, (SELECT COUNT(*) AS Expr1 FROM Event_data AS D LEFT OUTER JOIN Events AS E ON E.id = D.Event_id WHERE (D.Transaction_type = 1) AND (D.Transaction_value > 0) AND (D.Player_id = @ID)) AS PAID) AS X and @ID INT AS SELECT P.*,'/' + DBO.GETCHIPFOLDER(@ID) + '/' + ISNULL(P.PHOTO,'BLANK.GIF') AS PIC,ISNULL( (SELECT SUM(TRANSACTION_VALUE) FROM EVENT_DATA WHERE PLAYER_ID=@ID AND TRANSACTION_TYPE=1 GROUP BY PLAYER_ID),0) AS WINNINGS FROM PLAYERS P undefined P
The first returns a percentage for player wins, the second gives me a photo and sums the player winnings I would like to combine the results so I can get the percentage and wininngs in one query, in another matter all together I would like create a procedure like the first but instead of returning only one player, I would like to return the percentage for each player Thanks in advance for any light you can shine on this.
I have a question about stored procedures, Is it better to use stored procedures even if I only use it once at my site? Or is it better to write the sql-part directly in the sqldatasource? And am I forced to create two different stored procedures even if they are exactly the same except the "Where-part"? Now I have around 40 stored procedures, and quite many of them looks the same except the where-part... (Iam just a beginner with SQL)
Hello every one, I m working in aspx 2.0 with sql server 2005, please tell me how can I create Stored Procedures for two or more tables not a single table(select, insert, update, delete please send me the queries which can help me in easy way I will very thankful to you Thank you
I am learning to make a ASP web site and feel that if i can do it the harder way using some stored procedures instead of using multiple datasources on each page requiring that it might be better. So i am wondering what are these used for:DECLARE vs just entering "@param1 varchar(30)"When i use "DECLARE @rc int" i get the error "Incorrect syntax near DECLARE"How to return values to ASP page in Visual Studio 2005 How to use @@rowcount - doesn't seem to work for me?i tried using DECLARE @rc intSET @rc = @@rowcountWhen to use GO, BEGIN etcIf i want to use the variable only in the procedure, and not needed to be inputed, do i need to put it in the CREATE PROCEDURE (section)?Should i use my own stored procedures or VS2005 created ones using datasources? not really procedures but SQL, in SQL can i do like IF ELSE? if i use my own i cant use the Optimistic Concurrency right? and whats that?
