Newbie Question - How Do I Specify A Variable For The File Location When Using The Execute Package Task
Dec 12, 2005
There are two options to specify the subpackage location (SQL Server or file location). I'd like to know how I can specify a variable name that points to the file location so I avoid hard coding the file location which could change during production installation.

Have written a SSIS package which in turn runs a couple of child packages via the Execute Package control flow task. All is fine if I use a Location of File System for the task. However when I deploy to production I'd like the main package and it's child packages to be under SQL Server.
I can set the Execute Package task location to SQL Server after copying my packages into a development SQL box and again it works. However as it's now executing the package from SQL rather than wihin BIDS it doesn't give me the debugging/flow information for the Child package when I run the parent package. It's also a bit of a pain because even though all the packages are part of the same solution if I make a change to a child package I've got to remember to re-save a copy of it to the SQL database.
Have looked into seeing if I can make the location field for the Execute package task configurable so that I could run as a File System package within BIDS but as a SQL package in production but the Location field doesn't seem to be exposed as a property for the Execute Package task so can't set this as an expression or from a configuration.
Does anyone have any advice on using the Executing package task for child packages which are stored in SQL.

I'm looking for a way to refer to a package variable within any
Transact-SQL code included in either an Execute SQL or Execute T-SQL
task. If this can be done, I need to know the technique to use -
whether it's something similar to a parameter placeholder question
mark or something else.
FYI - I've been able to successfully execute Transact-SQL statements
within the Execute SQL task, so I don't think the Execute T-SQL task
is even necessary for this purpose.

I'm trying to use "findstr.exe" to extract some lines of interest from a data file, which I will later load to a table. I'd like to issue this form of a command:
findstr.exe "^SEARCHSTRING" "srcfile" > "dstfile"
I build the arguments using expressions, and both the search string and source file get correctly set. However, the ">" seems to be ignored--I can see the lines spitting out to the temporary window when I run under VS.
QUESTION: how do you redirect the output of a command run under an Execute Process Task?

Hi!
I meet a strange behaviour which is probably caused by my SSIS newbie nature.
I have a Execute SQL Task, used to drop and create some temporary tables. It works when invoked manually.
I have chained a Data Flow Task behind, but when I launch the whole process, although the Execute SQL tasks goes green, it is not executed (then the Data Flow fails because the required tables are missing).
Would anyone have any hint on why the execute sql task seems to be bypassed ?
kind regards
Thibaut

I am finding that in order to have the Web Services Task work successfully the location of the WSDL file has to be on a local drive that SSIS is executing upon. Is the current intended behavior?
In my SSIS task I use a URL path to store information extracted from the Web Service. The information is stored on a different server than the one that SSIS is running upon. This works properly without error.
I have confirmed that SSIS has appropriate permissions to read/write to that directory on that server. When I attempt to reference the WSDL file (located in the same URL directory that I am saving the information) I get a web services error, 'The Web Services Name is empty, Verify that a valid web service name is available."
When I update the Web Service Task attribute to point to the WSDL file located on a local drive it works correctly. I have confirmed that both WSDL documents are exactly the same.
The behavior seems a little strange...so I must be missing something subtle.

I'm working on an SSIS package that uses a vb.net script to grab some XML from a webservice (I'd explain why I'm not using a web service task here, but I'd just get angry), and I wish to then assign the XML string to a package variable which then gets sent along to a DataFlow Task that contains an XML Source that points at said variable. when I copy the XML string into the variable value in the script, if do a quickwatch on the variable (as in Dts.Variable("MyXML").value) it looks as though the new value has been copied to the variable, but when I step out of that task and look at the package explorer the variable is its original value.
I think the problem is that the dataflow XML source has a lock on the variable and so the script task isn't affecting it. Does anyone have any experience with this kind of problem, or know a workaround?

Hi everyone,
For first time I'm testing this task and surprisingly, when I try "Edit Package" option:
1)The DTS host failed to load or save the package properly
2)The selected package cannot be opened
3)Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component
But after these messages you can see all the tasks but they haven't name!!
It seem as if RCW mechanism has failed between managed and unmanaged coded-partially.
I don't dare to follow doing more stuff, I don't know if that package is well-loaded or not from there. ?¿
Any guidance or idea about this?

I am having problems executing a child package from a parent package using the Execute Package Task. I am attempting to run the master package through a SQL Server Agent job.
The SQL Server Agent job is owned by sa. The step that runs the parent package is configured to load the package from the SSIS Package Store on the same server that the job is running.
I have the Execute Package Task configured as follows:
Location: SQL Server
ExecuteOutOfProcess: True
Connecting as a SQL Server login (let's say TestEtl)
I have added the db_dtsoperator database role to both the TestEtl login and the login that SQL Server Agent connects through. I have also configured the child package's reader role to include db_dtsoperator. Per http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-US/library/ms141053.aspx, this should allow these logins to run the child package.
I have enabled logging of all events in both the parent and child packages. I see the following in the logs when the Execute Package Task executes (omitted portions unrelated to the execution of the child package task):

Hi,
I have an Execute SQL Task (OLE DB Connnection Manager) with a SQL script in it. In this script I use several SQL variables (@my_variable). I would like to assign an IS variable ([User::My_Variable]) to one of my SQL variables on this script. Example:
DECLARE @my_variable int
, <several_others>
SET @my_variable = ?
<do_some_stuff>
Of course, I also set up the parameter mapping.
However, it seems this is not possible. Assigning a variable using a ? only seems to work in simple T-SQL statements.
I have several reasons for wanting to do this:
- the script uses several variables, several times. Not all SQL variables are assigned via IS variables.
- For reading and mainenance purposes, I prefer to pass the variable only once. Otherwise every time the script changes u need to keep track of all questionmarks and their order.
- Passing the variable once also makes it easier to design the script outside IS using Management Studio.
- This script only does preparation for the actual ETL, so I prefer to keep it in one task instead of taking it apart to several consecutive Execute SQL Tasks.
- I prefer to use the OLE DB connection manager because it's a de facto standard here.
Could anyone help me out with the following questions:
- Is the above possible?
- If so, how?
- If not, why not?
- If not, what would be the best way around this problem?
Thanx in advance,
Pipo

I have a variable SYear with the data type Integer and the value 2005.
Connection type is OLE DB, and my sql statement is:
DECLARE @MyYear Int
SET @MyYear = ?
I have set the variable User::Syear as Input with the parameter name=0, there is no result set. I set BypassPrepare both True and False. However, this simple statement does not work. I keep having an error. If I put integer value directly into @MyYear, it is fine. What is wrong in here? Somebody help me!

In the Control flow tab, I have an Execute SQL Task that outputs full Result set into a variable of an object type. Now how can I write the contents of the Full Result Set into a text file using Script Task. I also want to format the following way while I output into a file:
Column Name 1 : Column Value
Column Name 2: Column Value and so on
I tried writing the contents of the Object Variable into a file, but the file had an output of single word: System.__ComObject.
Code for Writing the Full Result Set into a Text File
Dim RSsqloutput as String = Dts.Variables("objVariable").Value.ToString
Dim strVal as String = "File completed on " & Now() & vbCrLf & "------------------------------------------------------" & vbCrLf
oLogFile.WriteAllText("C:MyFile.txt", strValue)
oLogFile.WriteAllText("C:MyFile.txt", rsSQLOutput)
I went through this link that explains how to write XML Result Set into a File, But this doesn't help as it writes in XML format.
Would you please give me a hint of code how I can go upon.

My parent package calls packages stored in the file system. While developing, I would like to call packages in the project bin directory. In production, I would like to call packages in a different development. Is this possible?
I can change the package connection string with an expression that refers to user variables PackageLocation1 or PackageLocation2. I would like to do this automatically. Is this something that should be done at deployment time? Or is there a run time value that I can check and conditionally use PackageLocation1 or PackageLocation2?
Development and deployment is done on the same server, so the same enivronment variable value would be used in an indirect configuration. Same thing applies to a file configuration.
Another question: Is it possible to set up a different Installation Folder for use during deployment? Every time I deploy, I have to navigate the folders, you can't even paste in the folder name.

Hi everyone,
How to define a Input variable in a Execute Sql Task??
I've defined a User::Inicio variable which contains 4 as value.
In Parameter Mappins it has been defined. Then, I've gone to General->Sql Statement and allocated the following SQL Statement:
UPDATE CARGAPROCESOS SET FECHAULTIMACARGA = [Inicio]
or
UPDATE CARGAPROCESOS SET FECHAULTIMACARGA = [User::Inicio]
Anyway, I'm stuck, both did not work
Thanks in advance for your comments

I am designing an SSIS package and need to change the value of a DateTime global variable with the value returned from an Execute SQL task. The queary is as follows:
Select Versiondate = dateadd(dd,+1,Max(CreateDate)) from msdb..sysdtspackages p with(nolock)

The error message is as follows:

". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.
Task failed: VersionDate_Set
SSIS package "Package.dtsx" finished: Success.
The variable is set to data type DateTime, but the value will not change. Any ideas?

Hello,
I've asked this question before and I've read the answers before and I still cannot get it to work. My task is simple, I want to use the execute sql task container to grab a value from a database and put it in a variable. I've done all the preliminary stuff such as running profiler to make sure that the package is getting the call to the database, setting up the ResultSet to be "single row" in the general tab, mapped the Result Set correctly, but nothing works. I get the same error every time.
This is my sql command:
select output_location as output_location
from script_master
Result Set is set up like this:
Result Name: output_location ; Variable Name: User::output_location
Here is the error I get:
Error: 0xC002F309 at Execute SQL Task, Execute SQL Task: An error occurred while assigning a value to variable "output_location": "The type of the value being assigned to variable "User::output_location" differs from the current variable type. Variables may not change type during execution. Variable types are strict, except for variables of type Object.
".
I don't know what I'm doing wrong, I've followed all the instructions exactly on how to populate a variable in this container. My variable is set up as a string, if I change it to object I can get it to work. I think this is because the object is allowing nulls. I really believe that the variable is not populating and that is why I'm getting errors.
Please help. If you could provide step by step example's that would really make my day.
Thanks,
Phil

HI All. I'm trying to tweak the Transfer Logins task to exclude Windows Logins that are local to the Server (e.g. servernameusername) which obviously can't be transferred off the server. Annoying that we have a couple of local Logins on this system instead of all Domain Groups, but we're stuck with them due to firewall issues, and a policy excluding SQL Logins.
My idea is to create a text file as part of my Package that lists Logins to be Excluded From the Transfer - I think I then need to create a New File Connection to the Text File as a Connection Manager, then somehow get that data into a Variable, and then use an Expression to populate the 'LoginsList' Collection from syslogins where loginame not equal to logins in my textfilevariable?
Or maybe I'm over complicating this, and there's an easier solution? Lots of info in Books Online about Expressions and Variables, but having trouble finding examples that I can use. As a DBA, this is my first foray into SSIS, and as you can possibly tell, I'm floundering....

Hi All,
I created a SSIS package to extract data from a flat file source and load them into a table in a data base. After I created the package i checked it in to source control(perforce).
But the problem is once a month new flat source file comes and data should be updated.
Once the new flat file comes, is there anyway that SSIS package can identify the path of the flat file and execute the package automatically? In Flat file source only the data will be changed. Not location or data type or anything.
Can i use parameters to do that?
Thanks

I am missing something simple that's killing me.
I am trying to execute a child ssis package using the execute package task. I add execute package task to the parent package and in the package task editor, under the package options I choose: filesystem for location, I choose new connection and create a connection to the package on the filesystem I want to execute, packagenamereadonly is blank. I execute the parent package and get an error that I did not specify the name of the package in the execute package task object. Now, since I can't populate the package name, as that option is readonly, I am not sure how to remove my headache. Anyone see what I'm doing wrong? None of these packages have security.

Hi all,
I'm working with Execute SQL task. Connection type: OLE DB. With the following settings, the task works fine:
Parameter mapping:
Code Snippet
Variable Name Direction Data type Parameter Name
User::InputFile Input NVARCHAR 0
User::DesiredOutput Input NVARCHAR 1
SQLStatement:
Code Snippet
exec [spu_CreateOutput] ?, ?
However, I want to put in some conditions so I modified the task as:
Parameter mapping:
Code Snippet
Variable Name Direction Data type Parameter Name
User::OutputFile Input NVARCHAR 0
User::InputFile Input NVARCHAR 1
User::DesiredOutput Input NVARCHAR 2
SQLStatement:
Code Snippet
if(? <> 'NotUsed')
Begin
exec [spu_CreateOutput] ?, ?
End
But the modification doesn't work. The following message was thrown:
Error: 0xC002F210 at CREATE OUTPUT, Execute SQL Task: Executing the query "if(? <> 'NotUsed')
Begin
exec [spu_CreateOutput] ?, ?
End
" failed with the following error: "Syntax error, permission violation, or other nonspecific error". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.
Task failed: CREATE OUTPUT
Can anyone tell me what I have been wrong with it? It seems that parameter mapping can only apply for a single select statement/function/procedure call :-?
Thank you,
GiaHi
