Newby: Administer A Database Remotely?

Jul 20, 2005

I'm working on a website remotely through a VPN and my client uses SQL
Server. There's a requirement for a database and my client uses SQL

Is it possible to administer this database remotely, just like I do
with MySQL/PHP MyAdmin?

Please elaborate.

Thanks,

Marjorie

Remotely Accessing Database

Oct 15, 2004

I'm developing a VB app to manipulate data in a table. I've created an SQL server (local) and have successfully connected to and manipulated data in a database that I created. I would like to be able to run the app on another machine and connect to the same server. I'm having trouble determining what the server name is. Tried a few things but get the "server does not exist" message. Server is set to authenticate SQL server and windows.

Is this happening because my server is (local)? If so how do I change it to permit remote access?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Problems With Accessing Database Remotely

Aug 10, 2007

I'm writing an web app in VS2005.
I've created a product.mdf database through VS2005's Server Explorer (to my knowledge, I'm not using Sql Express). (Side question. The .mdf files are a stand alone xml structure used as a database, correct?).
When I execute locally, everything works great. But when I moved my code to where it is being hosted (remote computer). It's throwing the following error:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
This is my connection string:<add name="MyConnectionString1" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|Product.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>

What is my problem?

Building / Modifying An SQL Database Remotely

Jul 23, 2005

Hi Folks,I should begin by saying I'm fairly new to SQL Server. I'm an applicationdeveloper who has built front ends atop Server, but have never done much inthe way of design / development. My question is in two parts;1). What is the best way to remotely "create" an SQL Server database? I'vebeen told that this can be done with SQL Statements, but thought that theremay be a way using XML.2). Can I use this same method to propogate updates to the remote databasewithout affecting the data?To give you a better idea of what I'm trying to do, I have a client thatlives quite a ways up north. I'm building an application that will beinstalled up there. I'd like a method to be able to make changes to thisdatabase on my end (the development copy), create an XML file of the"database structure" and have the other database or application import thisXML file, and add tables, fields and relationships if they don't alreadyexist.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!Rick

Accessing The Database Remotely From Non-microsoft Platform

Want To Access SQL Database To Run Loop To Check Robots.txt Remotely

Jan 22, 2008

One of my tables in the db contains the websites and the location of their link directory. i.e. domain.com/linkdirectory
I want to run a check against every website's robots.txt file to ensure that it doesn't look like this:
user-agent: *
Disallow: /linkdirectory/
so I need a program that does the following:
For each website in database (start of loop)
Does robots.txt exist on their site ?(run a remote check)
     if it does
is their link directory blocked in robots.txt?
if so, then log their user id and website name into an array for later use
          end if
       endif
end loop
How would I do this in ASP.net 2.0?

Can't Connect Remotely To WSUS Referential MSDE Database

Nov 9, 2006

Hi all,

WSUS is installed on my windows 2003 server. During the install, parameter DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS was not specified, and so no remote connection was possible.

I used SVRNETCN.exe to enable TCP/IP remote connection on port 1433. However it seems not to work.

FROM THE SERVER :

osql -E -S MYSERVERWSUS works fine but

osql -E -S 127.0.0.1WSUS doesn't work, i get the famous error

[DBNETLIB]Serveur SQL spécifié non trouvé.
[DBNETLIB]ConnectionOpen (Connect()).

If i user "osql -L" command, my instance doesn't appear in the list

FROM A CLIENT COMPUTER

osql -E -S MYSERVERWSUS and

osql -E -S MY_SERVER_IPWSUS don't work, i get the same error

I've tried tried to understand for hours, and i'm lost. I thought there may be a problem between SQL and 2003, and read SQL sp3a was required. I ran

select @@version from osql and got result

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 - 8.00.881 (Intel X86)

8.00.881 is not referenced in ms support as a patched version number !!!!!

Can anyone help me please ?

Provider Error On Using Database Tuning Advisor Remotely

Dec 5, 2007

Hi,

I am experiencing a Named Pipes Provider error 40 message as detailed below. I get this when I'm running the dta utility on a production server which is trying to remote onto a test server to use the metadata and optimizer there.

The error reported is...

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)

(note: there is no (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: xxx) reported at the end of the error string)

The error results from the following cmdline syntax run from the production server.

dta -A 0 -E -e C:TuningLog.xml -F -ix C:DTA.xml -N OFF -of C:outputdta.sql -rl ALL -s DTA_20071205

Prod box: 64bit SQL2005 SP2 Std Ed Named instance, TCPIP and Named Pipes enabled, SQL Browser service running.
Test box: 32bit SQL2005 SP2 Std Ed Default instance, Listening for local and remote connections on TCPIP and Named Pipes (configured through the SAC), SQL Browser service running. From the SQL Log on the test box I can see TCPIP is listening & Named pipes is listening on \.pipesqlquery

There is no firewall configured on either box.

I can connect to the test server from the prod box using sqlcmd -E -S<servername>
I can ping the test server from the prod box

Would you have any idea what I'm doing incorrectly? The genericity of the error message doesn't give me much of a clue and the resolutions I've read all revolve around SQLBrowser, surface area config, and SQL Express which I've covered off.

many thanks

If the answer is complicated as i'm afraid it is, could any one provide me a link for a tutorial dealing with the above issues ?

SQL Database User Account Access Remotely Via SQL Management Studio Express

Aug 20, 2007

Hi, I hope you can help.I have configured a Windows 2003 web server and SQL 2005 Server (on same box) to successfully allow remote connections and to allow access via SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005.The problem I have is that I want to restrict access to the databases on the server via the Management Studio to specific databases e.g. 1 database user "sees" only 1 database.I can configure it so that the user's remote  access permissions do not allow access to other databases but they can still "see" the database listed in the Management Studio explorer.I can also configure it so that the users cannot see all the databases (by disabling View All Databases on SQL Server), but this means that they cannot not see their own database which they have permissions for.Is it impossible to have the desired behaviour of only displaying the database which the remote user accessing has permissions for and hiding all other databases?I have MSN'd,Googled and Yahoo'd this one to no avail :(Many thanksFergus

Newby - AUTOINCREMENT Problem.

Nov 5, 2005

Hi,I'm enclosed a snippet of test code which highlights my problem. The Storedprocedure insertValue should insert text into the parent, then insert othertext into the child table but the 2 tables should auto increment in sync(i.e. so that they both end up with the same id numbers). I've tried takingthe auto increment out of the child table but then I don't know how to getthe right parent id into the child table.Any advice appreciated - this is my first database, so I'm just in thelearning process really. Code follows:CREATE TABLE Parent(id INTEGER DEFAULT AUTOINCREMENT,parenttext VARCHAR(16),PRIMARY KEY (id))!CREATE TABLE Child(childID INTEGER INTEGER DEFAULT AUTOINCREMENT,childtext VARCHAR(16),FOREIGN KEY (childid) REFERENCES Parent(id),PRIMARY KEY (childID))!CREATE PROCEDURE insertValues(in p VARCHAR(16), in c VARCHAR(16))BEGINinsert into parent (parenttext) values (p);insert into child (childtext) values (c);END!call insertValues('from parent', 'from child')!select * from parent, child where parent.id = child.childid!

Newby JOIN Question

Nov 14, 2006

I'm attempting to use a JOIN for the first time and I'm getting about 94,000 rows returned when I should only be getting about 270. Something must not be unique (possible DSN) but I can't figure out why the join is not working. I know it must be difficult to determine the problem without actually seeing the tables but could somebody with a lot of SQL experience spot any glaring problems with this query? Thanks!

SELECT DS.DSNName AS DSN,
S.ServerName AS WebServer,
DBs.DBName,
A.ServerName AS SQLServer
FROM DSNs DS,
Servers S,
DBs,
DSNs LEFT OUTER JOIN Servers A
ON DSNs.SQLServerID = S.ServerID
WHERE DBs.Status = 1
AND DS.WebserverID = S.ServerID
AND DBs.DBID = DS.DBID

Real Easy Newby Q: SQL Server

Oct 28, 2005

This Q is so easy I can't find the answer anywhere!
Why is SQL Server called 'Server' ? I understand it is a lot more capable and robust than Access but where does 'server' come into it.
I currently use ASP and Access for dynamic websites but it is time to move up a notch.
Do I just buy SQL Server, make a database, upload it to the same place as before and hey presto?
can I run lots of websites (on different domains and servers) from databases created with my single license standard edition?
Thanks

Newby To DBA - Need Advise On Learning Position

Jan 4, 2008

Hello All,

I'm hoping you all can provide me with a little advice? I just landed my first DBA position with a company that runs different versions of SQL Server (7.0, 2000, 2005) on many different boxes. The databases I will be managing are in the 10-30TB ranges. Mostly the databases are for OLAP access by the company’s customers. I will need to bring myself up to speed on everything because there is no DBA at the company to transfer information.

Can anyone provide any advise on how I should approach this task of learning my position and/or useful links to resources? Thank you in advance!

Newby Question: Looping Over Rows

Apr 13, 2008

I imagine a data-retrieval scenario where data destined for several different tables are collected and initially placed into one 'collector' table (say, ALLDATA); a stored procedure then kicks in and passes the records to individual destinations. For example, I might want to have data for two persons, Ann and Betty, come in and be routed to table_ann and table_betty respectively, with the correspondence stored in table LOOKUP:

id output_table
Ann table_ann
Betty table_betty

How could this be implemented? Perhaps with some kind of loop over the rows of LOOKUP, with table name retrieved and entered into a (EXEC-written?) query

insert into <table_name>
from alldata
where id in (select distinct id
from lookup
where output_table = <table_name>)

But how could one iterate over the list of table names? (These could be placed in table, of course, and the question become 'how could one iterate over a table's rows?')

I hope that this is an easy question for SQL Server pros, and will be grateful for a brief pointer/code snippet. (I may have given more background then necessary, but perhaps there are better solutions available there as well?)

Thanks a lot!

NEWBY Question - Filtering Dates

Nov 15, 2006

Im not sure how to explain this or if this is the correct forum but here it goes.

I have created a report from a view that gives me court hearing dates on a defendent.  When I run the report/view I get two different dates for the person such as, 12/14/2006 and 12/15/2006.  How can I get it to show only the later date (12/15/2006)?  I pull information from a mainframe that almost always gives me 2 different dates, but we only need the most recent date.

Here is my query for the view

                      (dbo.DEFCHARGES.OffenseDate > CONVERT(DATETIME, '2006-01-01 00:00:00', 102))

In the 'PRE-HEARING SET' table is where I receive the two dates.  Is there a way to filter out the first date?  I just want to show the most recent date.

I just wanna know is there anything specific settings while or after installation I need to do so that they can access it and can configure in their Enterprise Manager.
Is it okay if I simply install SQL SErver 2000 in my http server and give the IP address of the server with the port number so that they can go to Client Network Utility and add my server. Later they can come to Enterprise Manager and connect to that?

Please advice me how it is to be done.
