Data Flow Job Failing, Destination = Microsoft SQL Native Client, Error Message Not Too Helpful...

Dec 14, 2007

Hi there,

I have a Data Flow task which uses an XML File Source with six parellell Outputs, each going firstly to a Data Conversion Task, then the results of each end in a SQL Server Destination Object. (All using the SQL Native Client)

To eplain this further, the Xml file contains 6 different types of elements, the Dataflow splits out each type of element and processes them into different tables. The Data Transformation object exists only because the XML fields are Uni-code and the table fields are VarChar not nVarChar.

Initially using this setup I found that the Connection would timeout using the SQL Native Client so I changed the Timout on the Destination Objects to 0. This fixed the problem to some degree, however at present I can run the Pakage using the Visual Studio enviroment and everything works fine, no problem. When I run the Dtsx file using the SQL Server Agent, I end up getting the error below...

Error: 2007-12-14 14:33:19.16 Code: 0xC0202009 Source: Import XML File to SQL SQL - CP [2746] Description: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDBERROR. An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80040E14. An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Hresult: 0x80040E14 Description: "The OLE DB provider "BULK" for linked server "(null)" reported an error. The provider did not give any information about the error.". An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Hresult: 0x80040E14 Description: "Reading from

I understand that this error is somewhat of a 'catch all' and that the way the Native SQL Server Connection object works makes Error Capturing difficult. I have tried a few things which I will list as I'm sure they will be suggested...

I have played around with the 'MaxInsertCommitSize' property of the SQL Server Destination Objects to no avail (IE, changing to 50000, 10000, 1000 all of which resulted in the same problem)

I am running the ssis pakage from the server which is the destination

As mentioned above the Timeout on the SQL Server Destination Objects is set to 0

What I have already mentioned and still don'tt quite understand is that I can run the job successfully from the Visual Studio enviroment but as a job run off the SQL Server it fails...

DTExec Stops Running Without Error Message

Sep 10, 2007

For a client i have built an application to give them the possibility to load packages for their data warehouse.

This application starts a database job in SQL Server, which in turn starts a dtsx package. This package loops over the contents of a table and starts the packages that are marked to be executed.

This all work well most of the time. Sometimes though, DTExec, the process running the packages, just stops running. There are no entries in the event viewer or anywhere else.

I run Windows Server 2003 with SQL Server 2005 SE SP1. The packages are run from the filesystem, not the database.

Has anyone encountered the same problem and know a solution? I can't find any info on the internet.

Package Crashes Without Error Information

May 20, 2006

I am creating an SSIS Package to import some data. The package contains a big for each loop with 3 parallel running nested for each loops. The package crashes within the big loop without returning any error information. It starts up the sqldumper and genreates an dump - but does not report any error to the UI (Visual Studio or dtexec). While I am running only one for each loop and disable the others the package executes successfully. Has anyone an idea what might be wrong ? or is the only chance to submit a bug report ?

Thanks

Stored Proc Crashes At Select Into With Error 18456 When Run From Another Machine

Mar 27, 2007

Hi,

Finally found what is causing my .net c# service application to return with Error 18456 (NT Authority/anonymous logon" severity 14 State 11.

It is connecting to a sql server db in another machine and running a stored procedure in that db. I found out that if I remove that two statements that create temp tables (with select INTO), the stored procedure executes without a problem.

Note that this stored procedure updates the tables does not have problems updated tables that are in the DB. I gets upset when creating temp tables though.

I cannot do away with those temp tables as they are needed in the calculation. How can I fix this problem?

Why would creating temp tables remotely cause this error? What am I missing in my set up. My service application connects with the integrated security = true. My service process installer has the account set to "User". What am I missing.

Please please help.

Weird Message Box When Running Master Package From VS

Apr 23, 2007

Hello:

I have a SSIS Project thats been running fine for months up until yesterday.

There's a master package that calls other packages, and when i run it now in Visual Studio, i get a Message Box after each of it's child packages run. The message states:

TITLE: Microsoft Visual Studio------------------------------The designer window cannot be closed while a package is running.Stop the debugger before attempting to close the window.------------------------------BUTTONS:OK------------------------------

This seems to be causing issues, because VS seems to hang on my machine at some point when running master packages, and i think it might due to a message box.

Anyone know how I can get rid of this?

Helpful Blogs - Take A Look Before Posting

Aug 29, 2007

I think we could solve quite a few questions much faster by posting helpful blogs here.
Some questions are asked over and over and the answer is typically: see this blog. People simply don't know it's out there.

So, if you are the author of a useful Reporting Services blog, or have found a Reporting Services blog particularly helpful, please post it here (keep it strictly to links that you feel solve a large number of RS questions).

If you would, also provide a short description as to the content of the blog.

I'll start with these:

Database Engin Tuning Advisor, Not Helpful

May 27, 2007

Okay, so i'll just let you know right now, that i suck at making quries

i'm testing out a 2k5 eval copy of Sql Server (if i like, i'll migrate from 2k)
i have a db of almost 4 million names, with no indexes, and i'm trying to have
Sql tune a procedure that i wrote to see what it recommends for adjustments.
but for some reason it comes up with no results. any ideas why?

--Update
just noticed that if i type in the full query (not in the procedure form)
it recommends some indexes for me. is there any why to get recommendations
though the stored procedure below? i have about 112 quries that i want
to analyse, i could change them to actual quries if i had to, but it'd
take awhile

DBCC Checkdb Might Soon Be Very Very Helpful To Me. MAYBE Hardware Problems

Nov 12, 2006

Hey guys. I've a question for you. I don't know where to start for the question but we have a SAN with 2 nodes and an activeactive cluster built on it with SQL 2005 ent edition installed. I've started running DBCC checkdb(db1,noindex) recently and am doing it every week. My question is this. I DON'T TRUST MY HARDWARE. I very often used to get the message that

'The operating system returned error 21(The device is not ready.) to SQL Server during a read at offset 0x00000b75e74000 in file 't:MSSQLDatafile1Index.ndf'. Additional messages in the SQL Server error log and system event log may provide more detail. This is a severe system-level error condition that threatens database integrity and must be corrected immediately. Complete a full database consistency check (DBCC CHECKDB). This error can be caused by many factors; for more information, see SQL Server Books Online.'

I also get the error described in http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlserverstorageengine/archive/2006/06/21/642314.aspx. I just finished running dbcc checkdb on my db today and luckily have come up with no errors.

I'm wondering what are the steps I should take to convince my higher ups that there are problems with Hardware and we are eventually going to have problems if something is not done about the hardware. I'e been taking diff and tran and full backups on this db but i don't want to go that route if I can get them convinced that it's not SQL. We have been on SQL 2005 for about 1 month now. This problems were there since 2000. Now, they are less recurring. Since, I've been on 2005, today is the first time I ran reorg
eindex for my db. Everything was fine. But, WHY ARE THESE I/O ERRORS/INFO OCCURING? All your help is appreciated. Thank you.

[File System Task] Error: An Error Occurred With The Following Error Message: Access To The Path Is Denied

Sep 7, 2007

Hi -

I have an File System Task that copies a file from one directory ot another. When I hard code the target directory (c:dirfile.txt) it works fine. When I change it to a virtual directory (\serverdirfile.txt) I get a security error:

[File System Task] Error: An error occurred with the following error message: "Access to the path '\gracehbtest oS2TMM_Live_Title_000002.xml' is denied.".

Where do I change the security settings?

Thanks - Grace

[XML Task] Error: An Error Occurred With The Following Error Message: There Are Multiple Root Elements.

Aug 18, 2006

I'm trying to use an XML Task to do a simple XSLT operation, but it fails with this error message:

[XML Task] Error: An error occurred with the following error message: "There are multiple root elements. Line 5, position 2.".

The source XML file validates fine and I've successfully used it as the XML Source in a data flow task to load some SQL Server tables. It has very few line breaks, so the first 5 lines are pretty long: almost 4000 characters, including 34 start-tags, 19 end-tags, and 2 empty element tags. Here's the very beginning of it:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<ESDU releaselevel="2006-02" createdate="26 May 2006"><package id="1" title="_standard" shorttitle="_standard" filename="pk_stan" supplementdate="01/05/2005" supplementlevel="1">
<![CDATA[This package contains the standard ESDU Series.]]>

There is only 1 ESDU root element and only 1 package element.

Of course, the XSLT stylesheet is also an XML document in its own right. I specify it directly in the XML Task:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform"/>

<xsl:template name="identity" match="@*|node()">
<xsl:copy>
<xsl:apply-templates select="@*|node()"/>
</xsl:copy>
</xsl:template>

<xsl:template match="kw">
<xsl:copy>
<xsl:apply-templates select="@*"/>
<xsl:attribute name="ihs_cats_seq" select="position()"/>
<xsl:apply-templates select="node()"/>
</xsl:copy>
</xsl:template>

</xsl:stylesheet>

Its 5th line is the first xsl:template element.

What is going on here? I do not see multiple root elements in either the XML document or the XSLT stylesheet.

Thanks!

CmdExec In A Nightly Job

Jul 3, 2007

I have to verify a .CSV file exists before I run a BULK INSERT. I am using XP_FileExist in SQL 2000 to accomplish this. After the Bulk Insert is completed and validated, I need to Rename the file and Move the file to archive the folder. For testing I figure If I can rename the file I can move it. I suspect I have permission issues and need to provide the SQL Server Agent permissions to this folder and file. I have my PC setup as a SQL 2000 Server and am attempting to get this step only working on my local machine. I created a nightly Job that remanes a file that I created in a Job and that is all it does. I am running the Job as SA but am still having issues.

The step being executed by the Job is "Ren C:MyTestFile.csv C:MyTestFile1.csv" (with the quotes). If I run this statment (without the Quotes from a command prompt, the file is renamed.

I have set the Type as "Operating System Command (CmdEXEC)". The Job history shows "The process could not be created for step 2 of job 0x71D51027F920A140A2913234DB7FF509 (reason: The system cannot find the file specified). The step failed."

As I said, I suspect that it is a permissions issue as the command works from the command prompt. What is the windows account that the SQL Server Agent uses to commit these commands? I added "Everyone" with Full access to the folder and I still get the same failure.

I would appreciate any assistance anyone could provide. Thanks in advance!

Strategy For Nightly Backups Using Ftp

Oct 22, 2004

I am using SQL Server 2000 and trying to create a disaster recovery strategy that would run nightly and backup the database or at least the changes and would ftp these to a secure ftp site. For smaller database it is easy, I just take a full backup, zip up the file and ftp it to the secure backup site. This strategy does not work so well when the zipped up database is still close to 3GB. I have a pretty big window for doing everything but 3GB is just too much to ftp overnight. The recovery model is simple so the only other option seemed to be do a full backup once a month and take differentials nightly. The problem is I am offsight and the client may need to take a full backup during the day and my nightly differential would get screwed up.

There is a fairly low volume of transactions so the idea of just doing nightly backups on the data that has changed is the obvious choice but differentials don't seem to fit. Any ideas?

Thanks,
TH

Nightly Database Push

May 20, 2008

I have a production database that I would like to have copied over to a backup database on a separate server every evening. I don't want to mirror, I just want the databases synced up every evening.

The servers are physically attached through a gigabit switch and the database is relatively small, so I don't think that speed will be an issue.

Could someone point me to an article about the best way to accomplish this?

Thanks.

How To Nightly Copy 1 Database To Another

Nov 6, 2006

I know this is probably an easy thing to do but I've been struggling with this on and off for the past month or so. All I want to do is copy two databases (our app db's) to two other databases (for app testing and training) on the same server every night. The databases aren't used during this time so they can be taken down if necessary.

I've tried using the Copy Database wizard and scheduling the resulting job but that isn't working...

Thanks in advance for any direction/help!

Merging 50 Databases Into One On A Nightly Basis

Sep 13, 2007

How would you solve this problem?
Would you use replication? SSIS? Schedule stored procs? A third party data tool?

We have about 50 databases located at offices around the world. There are several key tables which we need a central copy of at our Head Office.

We need only the new INSERTS or UPDATES for the day to be copied to head office.
The copying process should happen after business hours for that office.

Some cleaning of the data needs to happen before updating head office.

Our database is being installed at new offices every other month, so it's important to us that this be easy to add a new database into the schedule, ideally without needing a SQL DBA or Developer.

We want something robust, performant and easy to troubleshoot.

SQL Server Error Message - Operating System Error 10038: An Operation Was Attempted On Something That Is Not A Socket...

Nov 20, 2006

My apologies...I wasn't for sure where to post an error like this...

Over the last 2 months I have gotten this SQL Server error (twice). All existing processes will continue to work, however no new processes can be created and users cannot connect to the server. This is the exact text of the message in the SQL Server error log.

Operating system error 10038: An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket...

Error: 17059, Severity: 18, State: 0

Error accepting connection request via Net-Library 'SSNETLIB'. Execution continuing.

Error: 17882, Severity: 18, State:

While we can typically just stop SQL Server Service and restart the services...I have found it is best to restart the machine during non-production times to take care of any 'residual' effects of this error.

The SQL Server 2000 SP4 box with Windows 2003 Standard SP1 is well maintained by our I.T. team and it typically will run 4 or 5 months without a reboot.
