No Data In Data Mining Cube.

Nov 19, 2006

Hi,

I've created a Cluster data mining model and seems to correctly return data. However I've created a data mining dimension and cube but when I go to query the cube it doesn't return any data if I select any members on the data mining dimension. Any suggestions to where I can look to resolve this?

Thanks

Data Mining Cube With 0-value Facts

Nov 21, 2006

I'm defining a mining structure against an OLAP dimension. The continuous value that I'm using both as input and for forecasting represents the time to complete a certain process.

There's something that strikes me as if it could be a problem, but I'm not sure. Our fact table has multiple columns (with multiple correponding measures in the cube). The "time-to-complete" measure is only populated on some of the fact rows - the rows that represent completion information. Other rows represent other information, and the "time-to-complete" value is set to 0. This works fine for cumulative time-to-complete and average time-to-complete, but it seems like it could mess up data mining. Will those 0-value facts skew the mining results? I'm not seeing a way to filter out those entries and only include the non-zero facts in the mining processing.

Or perhaps I'm totally misunderstanding something, which is quite possible. :)

Data Mining Against A Cube With Time Dimension

Nov 21, 2006

We have a set of cubes and dimensions, and we're experimenting with data mining against the cubes (primarily for forecasting applications). We have a custom time dimension (which we call calendar), not generated by the BIStudio wizard. The dimension has year/month/day/hour/... attributes. But when I try to add this Calendar dimension to the mining structure as a nested table using BI studio, it only shows the Year attribute, not the others. Other dimensions seem to show all the attributes.

Is there something we've done wrong in defining our time dimension? What determines which attributes show up as available for selection in BI studio?

Using Cube Views As A Data Source To Build Mining Model

Nov 16, 2006

Hi all,

I am new to SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services and would like to use the OLAP Cubes as a datasource to build Mining Model . However i would like to use a particular view of the OLAP cube that i have generated to be used as the datasource for the mining model . I find that i am not able to save the Cube View while browsing the OLAP cube in Business Intelligence Studio. Is there a way i can acheive this requirement.

Any ideas regarding this will be really appreciated.

I followed the tutorial posted at [URL] ...

Everything was ok until the last step where I had to process the mining structure which resulted in a warning

"Informational (Data mining): Decision Trees found no splits for model, Tbl Decision Tree Example."

What does this error mean? How do I resolve it? Also, I only see the first level in the Mining Model Viewer, I don't see the levels 2 and 3.

Data Mining - Scalar Mining Structure Column Data Type Error...

May 31, 2006

Hoping someone will have a solution for this error

Errors in the metadata manager. The data type of the '~CaseDetail ~MG-Fact Voic~6' measure must be the same as its source data type. This is because the aggregate function is not set to count or distinct count.

Is the problem due to the data type of the column used in the mining structure is Long, and the underlying field in the cube has a type of BigInt,or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I thought I would then explore the possibility of have more than 2 prediction columns, in this case 20.

I get an error message and I can't work out :
a) if this is because there's a limit to the maximum number of prediction columns and where that maximum is stated.
b) if something else has become corrupted
c) there's a know bug and if the error message is either meaningful or not.

Either way, I'm unable to complete the data mining wizard

The error message is :Errors in the metadata manager. Either the mining structure with the ID of '[my model Structure]' does not exist in the database with the ID of 'DMAddinsDB', or the user does not have permissions to access the object.

Data Mining :: Implementing Excel Data Mining In A Classroom Setting?

Jun 15, 2015

Implementing data mining Add-in in an academic setting?  We need to handle over 150 new students a semester and have their connection to Analysis Services survive for their four years at the college.  We are introducing data mining to every freshman business student as a unit within their Intro to Excel class (close to a month of work to give them a sense of what is possible).  Other courses later in their curriculum will expand on that introduction.

Once implemented, we would have as many as 900 connections to manage (four years from now).  It is possible that multiple sections will be running at the same time, so 40 students may be accessing the data mining tools concurrently.

Is there a way to "bulk establish" the access credentials and establish those databases?

How Is The 'Score' Value Derived In The Lift Chart/Mining Legend For Data Mining Models?

Sep 26, 2006

Hi,
I have just run a simple data set through a model to predict a simple true or false value (i.e. binary output)
The Lift Chart/Mining Legend in Analysis Services shows three results €“ Score, Population Correct (%), and Predict Probability (%)

Population Correct I beleive is the percentage of predictions it got right out of the total number of predictions it tried to make. Is this correct?

However, I can€™t work out how the other two are derived in particular the 'SCORE'. To give a live example the scores were as follows:

Model Score Pop Correct Pred Probability
Decision Trees 0.83 76.59% 54.28%
Neural Network 0.75 67.63% 50.05%
Ideal Model 100.00%

Can anyone help with this and give a detailed explanation?

Many thanks,

Excel 2007 Data Mining Add-in Advance Create Mining Model Question

Apr 11, 2007

Hi,

I am trying to model data in analysis services with the Advance Create Mining Model function in the excel addin. I am having trouble creating an association model that works like the Associate button above the Advanced button.

The format of my data is like this

OrderID Product

100 Bike

100 Helmet

100 Shoes

200 Helmet

200 basketball

200 Bat

300 Shoes

300 Socks

The associate button works perfectly since it asks me which column is the transaction id (orderid) and which column I am trying to predict (product). The advanced create mining model asks me to determine what the columns are...

OrderID=key Product=Input+Predict?

When I run the advance create mining model associate, I get a browser that gives me no rules and the support for only one item itemset (each product but no combination of products).

Does anyone know what I have to do to get it to work like the associate button?

Missing Data With SSAS Cube As A Report Data Source

May 9, 2006

I've got a report that is using a cube as a data source and I can't get the report to show all the data. Only data at the lowest level of the cube is displayed. The problem is that most of the data I'm concerned with is at higher levels. There's no problem with the MDX. I get the correct results when I run the query.

I'm using a table to show the results. I've also tried a matrix, but I get the same results. I'm using SSRS 2005 and SSAS 2000.

Anyone have experience with this? Am I missing something simple?

How To Access The Data From A Custom Data Mining Plugin ?

Dec 20, 2006

I'm stucked in a problem and I thought if you would be so kind as to helping me to resolve it.

I'm implementing a clustering algorithm plugin for text mining. I've already read the tutorials and sample codes provided by the MSDN Library.

Well... My problem is: I can't go through the data when the Predict method is called. I've read that this method implements the "core" of the custom algorithms. Here is a small snippet of my code for you to understand my doubt:

STDMETHODIMP ALGORITHM::Predict(/* [in] */ IDMContextServices* in_pContext,/* [in] */ DM_PREDICTION_FLAGS in_Flags,/* [in] */ IDMAttributeGroup* in_pPredAttGroup,/* [in] */ DM_CaseID in_CaseID, /* [in] */ ULONG in_ulCaseValues,/* [in] */ DM_ATTRIBUTE_VALUE* in_rgValues,/* [in] */ ULONG in_ulMaxPredictions,/* [in] */ ULONG in_ulMaxStates, /* [out] */ DM_ATTRIBUTE_STAT** io_prgPredictions,/* [out] */ ULONG* out_pulPredictions) {

for(UINT i=0;i<in_ulCaseValues;i++) {
DM_ATTRIBUTE_VALUE& dmattributevalue = in_rgValues;
ULONG iAttribute = dmattributevalue.Attribute;
if (iAttribute == DM_UNSPECIFIED)
continue;
double dblValue = ::DblContinuous(dmattributevalue.Value);
char buffer[129];
sprintf(buffer,"%f ",dblValue);
RENAN_Log::log(buffer);
}
return S_OK;
}

As you can see, I'm going through in_rgValues to get its values, but i'm only obtaining the first register of the table on the database. I need to roll over a kind of resultset so I could access all the registers I need. Is there any way to do so ?

I expected Predict() received a matrix containing all my data, but the only thing I noticed that could represent the data is that in_rgValues vector. So I can go through this vector, but it holds only the first register of the table in the database (that's what's being saved on my log). I need all of the registers in order to pre-process the data and implement my clustering algorithm.

Well... That's it... I would be very pleased if you could help me.

Data Mining :: How To Mine Data From One Spreadsheet And Place It In Another

Jun 15, 2015

I have very little experience with programming and data mining, but I am working on a project where I need to take data from one spreadsheet and place it in another. Since it is hard to describe what I would like to do, I will provide an example:

SPREADSHEET 1
Column 1, Column 2
100, ?
101, ?
102, ?
103, ?

SPREADSHEET 2
Column 1, Column 2
102, 202
100, 200
103, 203
101, 201

In this example, the data in Column 1 is always tied to the data in Column 2 (i.e., 100 in Column 1 means 200 in Column 2, etc.) However, the data for Column 2 is only available in SPREADSHEET 2; moreover, the data is not in the same order in both spreadsheets.

My question is how can I create some sort of program where I can transfer the data from SPREADSHEET 2 into SPREADSHEET 1?

Excel Data Mining Add-in For Categorical Data

Thank you very much for your previous answers conserning clustering algorithm.

I change a bit my data and now I can get two and three clusters as I wish.
But now I have a different question. I wish to keep my Structure and Model for further trials with different algorithm values, like cardinality. I tried the following
I selected in excel Data Mining and then the option cluster button.
Then in the cluster wizard I chose analysis service data source and I reform the query as I need adding only at the end
where "STAFF_YES" = 1. Then I choose the needed columns and target value. Finally I select browse model, enable drill through only and I finish the wizard and get some results, rather good. But i need to try again with different parameters.
I tried Business intelligent Studio to check my Analysis service. The structure were here but when I changed any parameter and I tried to reprocess I got the following messages

Why Mining Structure Can Only Use One Dimension From A Cube?

Sep 11, 2006

Hi,

I am working with several tables, but for now I just mention 4 : one is fact table (named Usage), and 3 dimensional tables Periods, Products, and Regions. The fact table contains references to the dimensional tables. Table Periods contain two other columns month and year.

I created a cube containing columns from those 4 tables. Deployment was successful. Trouble comes when I want to create a mining structure using Time Series containing these columns :

- Period
- Amount (of money)
- Product name
- Region name

When I choose to use cube (instead of table) as source for mining structure, I'm forced to choose only one dimension (among the Periods, Products, and Regions). Whatever dimension I choose I end up being unable to use the column period as the Time-Key column. Effectively I cannot use Time Series method since I cannot use the column period.

(1) Why is this so [why Visual Studio forced us to use only one dimension from the cube] ?
(2) Why Visual Studio eliminates the column period, column that has relationship with the
time dimension?
(3) What is the use of Cube anyway to the mining? Is there still any use for it?
(4) What is the solution to that kind of problem I face?

Thank you,

Bernaridho

Attribute Limit Of 5000 When Mining A Cube

Jan 6, 2007

I'm trying to build a association model in the Standard Edition based on an existing cube. I keep getting the error:

Error (Data mining): The 'Product Recommendations' mining model has 60385 attributes. This number of attributes exceeds the attribute limit of 5000 allowed by the current version of the algorithm associated with the mining model.

I created Cube Slice filters and those limit the Customer and Product dimensions (Product is Nested) to well under 5000. The error message also does not change. The number of attributes is equal to the number of rows in the Product dimension, but I expected the cube slice to reduce the number. I tested all the SQL used while it processes and with the MDXFilters the number of rows returned is well under 5000.

So, in short, the final questions is, is it possible to create a mining model in standard edition based on an existing cube where the nested dimension in the model has more than 5000 rows? Is there some other way to filter the query?

I guess my only choice on this if there isn't a way is to extract the data into relational table with only the rows I want to analyze....that's a huge pain and doesn't really make sense when the filters should limit the model size.

What is annoying on this is I can't find one reference anywhere on the microsoft site that this limit even exists within the product...

Thanks for any assistance on this!

Data Mining How To

Jan 30, 2004

Hello all,

I was handed a new project and I'm not quite sure how to do it or even what technology to use. Now, I think that SQL Server's Analysis Services could help (or even do the entire thing) but I'm not sure. So, basically, I'm looking for recommendations and ressources on the subject.

Here's my scenario:

We have a Data-Warehouse that stores information about the production of our company. Around this fact table, we have multiple dimensions including one about the origin of the production (who) and a time dimension (when).

We are buiding cubes and linking Excel to them for future analysis. Everything is done. Now, the all-mighty supervisors would like to have some predictions built-in to the system for the rest of the year based on the previous years. Basically, we would be adding production values for every possible time (the step is every hour, so the sum of the production comming from a certain origin is set as the fact and linked to a time dimension row for that hour).

As you can see, it's not very difficult and it seems to me like Analysis Services might already have that functionnality although I couldn't find it (seems like predictions can only be made by looking at relations found by the data mining algorithms and these predictions need to be made by a human because they are not really registered as "new" facts).

So, in short, I'd like to have a tool calculate future productions for the rest of the year and set a new column (or dimension) to a certain value indicating that this fact row has been predicted and is not certain. Of course, the refreshing of data would not create duplicate rows for predictions, newer predictions (probably based on more facts) would replace the last equivalent prediction.

I hope that's clear.

What do you recommend I use? Is it a case where I will need to build my own separate program (that updates the data-warehouse) or is it possible to achieve this using data mining?

Thanks a lot,

Skip.
