No Default Entries In SQL Server 2000 Service Manager Options
Jul 20, 2005
ver: SQL-DMO Version: 8.00.760
I have the option to automatically start SQL Server on startup, but
when it does start up, the SQL Server Service Manager does not have
the green arrow indicating that it is active. When I double-click it
to display the SQL Server Service Manager, it shows the name of the
server, but no services in the drop-down box.
When I start Enterprise Manager I see an instance of MSDE where
someone installed an MSDE application. That is active. But I have to
"connect" to the localhost. The instance name is the name of the MSDE
application. I would like it to connect to the localhost on startup.
Any ideas on how to correct this problem?
Thanks,
RBollinger

Hi,
Does anyone happen to know what authority is required to view the following in Enterprise Manager:
Database Maintenance Plans
Current Activity
SQL Server Logs
When I use EM to log onto SQL Server with a login that does not have sysadmin authority, I do not appear to have these options available when I expand the Management folder. I can find no reference to any specific authorities that are required in Books online and unable to find anything in the Knowledge Base about it either.
I can't believe that sysadmin authority is needed to view these.
Any help would be appreciated.

I installed SQL Server 2012 on a windows server 2012 that had an existing 2008 R2 SQL installation.
After the install I can see only the 32 bit network configuration options in SQL Server Configuration Manager for both versions. Before the install they were available in the 2008 R2 version of the tool.

Anyone else had this problem?
I think I had a beta installed at some point. After a dozen attempts, I got SQL Server Express to install, but I had to change from the default service name (SQLExpress). When trying to configure the .NET samples that come with Visual Studio 2005, the ConfigSamples.exe does not recognize that I have SQL Server Express installed. I suspect this is due to my non-default service name. I have verifed that there is not a service installed (at least according the Services Admin Tool) that is named SQLExpress.
I just dropped over $600 for a personal copy of 2005 Professional, and I would just like to view the samples. Someone take pity on my poor soul and help out. I promise to help you help me and show much appreciation.
Any and all help is appreciated.

If we decide to make Report Manager the UI facing both internet and intranet users, but prefer that our intranet users not face the performance hit created by SSL, and prefer that SSL be turned on for internet users, what options do we have for configuting our RS environment if all users ultimately use the same reports and we wish to keep number of licenses at a minimum?

I installed MSDE2000 with named instance on top of MSDE 7.0 and rebooted the system. The “SQL Server Service Manager” comes up with default server( MSDE7.0).
But I need “SQL Server Service Manager” has to come up with new instance name and the new server automatically after reboot.
I didn’t see any problem in connecting to instance name if I choose it from the server list. But user wants to see the server with instance name by default when system restarts. Do you have any idea about this?
Thank you,
Sri

I am currently hardening our SQL 2012 (with AlwaysOn Availability Groups) environment. Both the SQL service and agent account are using service accounts (only domain user). SQL browser service is disabled. Permissions to all roles are handled by using domain groups.
Currently a lot of (default) NT Service accounts are listed (some with sysadmin privileges). Are there accounts that can be removed?

On one of our machines, all of the SQL Server 2000components except for the main Server component (SQL Servercore) itself were installed (Management tools, etc) a while agoand everything was running fine. Now I go and add/install theServer component and then Service Pack 3a.It seems that Service Manager won't start up (I get an hourglass cursor)and now I find that Enterprise Manager won't run as well. No errormessages appeared and I don't think I saw anything unusual inthe log file. However, I can use Enterprise Manager on a differentmachine and connect to the database (so the databaseitself seems to be running).Any suggestions as to what the problem might be and how tofix it? I like to see if I can repair this without havingto do a reinstall.Thanks.PF

I am running Win XP SP2 and MSDE 2000 SP3a. The user is logging on asa POWERUSER. When the user logs on the MSSQLSERVER service starts butthe SQL Server Service Manager, that runs in the system tray, showsthat the instance has not started. The field that displays theinstance name is blank and it is not listed in the drop down list. The MSSQLSERVER service is set to start with a Windows domainadministrator account. The SQL server can be accessed by a remotecomputer through Enterprise Manager. The local programs cannontinteract with the server though.Does anyone know if I could grant some user access rights to allow MSDEto work under a POWERUSER login?

I have an app receiving messages from SQL Service Broker when data is updated. (Messages are located at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.data.sqlclient.sqlnotificationinfo.aspx )
When I run this app against a remote SQL Server, I receive the message "Updated" which I expect.
But when I run the same app against the local machine SQL Server, I receive the message "Options".
Does anyone know if there are SQL Server options that must be set to certain values?
I can't seem to find anything that troubleshoots this message... either from a SQLServer- or a .NET standpoint.

Hi there. I am new to the SQL Express. I just finished installing the SQL Express 2005 with Advanced Services on a Windows XP SP2 computer. The first thing I noticed was the service manager (used to be on the taskbar) was being removed on the Express Edition. How do I get this feature back if it's even possible? I know you can find out the server status from the Configuration Manager but it's handy if the status is showned on the taskbar after logging in.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi all,
I hope this is the correct forum. I have SQL Server 2000 installed on a server located in the USA. The local time zone on the server is EST. Therefore getdate() returns EST time. I now realise that I'd like to be saving all my timestamps in UTC. While I could modify all my stored procedures to use getutcdate() rather than getdate() I wonder if there is a database level setting for time zone that will cause getdate() to return UTC date?
Any ideas?

When I proposed start to use SQL Server 2005 for new VS 2005 web sites, one of my co-workers responded that
we will update the old SQL Server 2000 databases to SQL Server 2005 when we are ready to use 2005 SQL Server.
Questions:
1. Any expected problems to upgrade old 2000 databases to new 2005 SQL Server?
2. I have installed both 2005/Management Studio Express and 2000/Enterprise Manager in my PC. Any expected
problems when running both 2000 and 2005 SQL Server at the same database server?
3. What is the best configuration for running SQL Server 2005 when we have old 2000 databases? Upgade or not upgrade?
TIA,
Jeffrey

I am looking for a way to replicate databases from an environment using SQL Server 2000 sp4 to machines using either 2000 sp4 or 2005 sp2. The size of the dbs (+3 gb) warrant a transactional model, but the developers opted to not create primary keys for any of their tables and PKs are required for transactional publications (http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1627873&SiteID=17&pageid=0#1614178). Creating PKs are, most likely, not an option given the time constraints of the project.
I'm also aware of the fact that merge replication does not work from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005 (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=499634&SiteID=1).
I'm looking for alternative solutions to this problem, regardless of whether it's replication or not. Log shipping was suggested at one point, but I want secondary confirmation on this. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
UPDATE: Log shipping in SQL Server 2000 is supported in Enterprise and Developer edition. The source server is using 2000 Standard.
UPDATE 2: Log shipping in SQL Server Standard is *possible* but unsupported http://sql-server-performance.com/Community/forums/t/17798.aspx?PageIndex=1. It looks like the original poster was still having problems by the end of this thread.

Hi,I currently (for a hobby project) am unable to use SQL Server 2005, and rather am stuck with 2000. Since the way diagrams are handled changed, the tool for 2005 doesn't allow for the creation of diagrams when using it for 2000 (work sweet for everything else though!).I do not have access to a developer version of SQL Server 2000's tools, and thus no Enterprise Manager, leading me to my question: Are there any free utilities to replace this functionality? I don't have MS Access or Visio or anything like that unfortunately :(

However, sometimes Enterprise Manager will crash on me for no obvious reason(it generates errors, but this takes forever, so i kill it). It is not consistent, nor can I reproduce the error, but it happens about once a day, never at the same time. Anyone else see this? My pc has win2K professional on it.

Hi Guys
wondering if you can help me.
Im having an issue with SQL Server Enterprise manager. I cannot access an MSDE DESKTOP SQL Server 2000 installation that is on the same machine as enterprise manager.
I can access the MSDE Databae from another machine fine, but when I try to register that DB locally in Enterprise manager I get this error.
PC007 - Data source name not found and no default driver specified.
I had to install sqlserver 2000 using k=dbg and skip the MDAC install as it was giving me an install error but this shouldnt have mattered as I am running XP SP2 and it has MDAC 2.8 installed by default.
Any Ideas?

When Trying to register a SQL Server using Windows Authentication, I get the following error:
Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
When I edit the properties and make it SQL Authentication, it works fine. The SQL Server Service is starting up with a domain user account. If that makes any difference. Funny thing is, that my co-worker, can register the SQL Server in his Enterprise Manager using Windows Authentication. We are both Domain Admins and members of the servers local admin group. So, I'm not sure what to do now.
I checked under Security, Logins...and neither of us are listed under there.
Thanks
