Non-Existent Remote Servers

Please help me! We have a server that was renamed some time ago and, for some reason, the old name is now in SQL 6.5 in remote servers. I can't remove it because it keeps saying that it is "not defined as a remote server at the site."
This is a problem because when I try to set up the server for replication as a subscriber, it gives me the same message and won't let me go any further. It's kind of a catch-22; It's not a valid server so it should be removed, but when I try to remove it, it fails because it's not a valid server.

Can anybody help me on Remote Servers. I want to create a remote server
from 6.5 to 7.0. Is it possible to create a remote server from 6.5 to 7.0?.
From the Books online I saw remote server related commands. Like Linked servers in 7.0, tables of 7.0 can be extracted like "select * from <Remote_server>.<Database>.<Owner>.<Table_name>", in 6.5 Remote servers?. How do we execute a stored procedure of 7.0 Database from 6.5 server in remote server?.
Can anybody guide me on the above topics.

How do I add a remote SQL server to a local SQL server so that I can query it
using the normal T-SQL syntax. I have already tried using the following syntax:
sp_addlinkedserver @server = '233.56.152.112',
@srvproduct = N'SQL Server'
This caused the server to show up in the linked servers under Security folder in the Enterprise Manager GUI.
BUT WHEN RUNNING THE FOLLOWING QUERY:
(Select * from 233.56.152.112].remoteDATABASE.dbo.remoteTABLE)
I GET THE FOLLOWING ERROR:
[OLE/DB provider returned message: Client unable to establish connection]
[DBNMPNTW]ConnectionOpen (CreateFile()).
ANY GUIDANCE IS GREATLY APPRECIATED

I know you can execute stored procedures on remote servers in SQL Server 6.5, but can you run regular queries as well using the 4 part name qualification?
Example: select * from server1.database1.dbo.table1
If not, is there another way I can manipulate data on remoter servers?

I have two SQL Servers (6.5). One based in London (LDNINNTS9) and one in New York (NYINNTS2).
I had bidirectional replication set up on one table in a DB and everything is (WAS!!!) working fine. Came to work this morning (Monday typical!) and the following has happened.
When I select the remote servers option on the NY server from Enterprise manager I get the following error message
Unable to connect to site '0'because '' is not defined as a remote server.
Now it says that '' is not defined as a remote server. So I did a select of @@Servername and it has returned (null). It was set to NYINNTS2. I have tried executing some ISQL to change the name and started and stopped the SQL Services but the name remains (null). Does anyone have an idea of what I can do to set the name up as it was?
I know that the Server name gets set to null if it is invalid, but I am trying to set it to NYINNTS2, which should not be invalid? Does the domain name impact the validity of the name?

Hi,
I've SQL 7 running on windows NT 4.0 server.
From my Sql server when I tried to register a remote server in the same office, I couldn't.
When I get the new registration wizard, I could see the server(s) I want to register. But when I finish all the steps in the wizard, it says: Unable to establish client connection.Connection Open(Create File).
I tried using both sql standard and win nt security (logins) but didn't work.
Help please.

My package runs fine in Business Studio. When I schedule it the error log message is 'jobmanager tried to run a non-existent step (2) for job ...'
There is only the one step defined in the package schedule. Does anyone know what the problem is?

Can someone please shed some light on what seems to me to be a common requirement.
If I create an alias or linked server to Server1 - say Alias1 - on Server1 and then use that name in a query on Server1, a remote/distributed query is always used (even though we are running on the local server and that overhead is completely unnecessary).
Is SQL Server really not capable of deciding that
select * from Alias1.db1.dbo.table1
and
select * from Server1.db1.dbo.table1
should be optimized and executed exactly the same when Alias1 is Server1, but that it is a distributed query ONLY when Alias1 is really referring to a remote server? I realize that the four part name is not necessary when I am referring to objects on the current server, but I am trying to write code that is server instance independent.
It just seems that if that is not possible, then the only way to create system independent stored procs that can run in dev, staging, and production environments and work with multiple databases on multiple servers is to create all sorts of scripts to regenerate all the procs whenever you move a database between servers?
If SQL Server is even close to the enterprise big iron server that MS now claims it is, it surely needs to support running in dev, staging, and production environments and work with multiple databases on multiple servers?!
I'm really looking for someone to tell me I'm missing something simple, and of course you can do this - but complex workarounds are invited too :-)
This is not something I am investigating as an academic exercise, I am already doing this, but I have to figure out how to do it better because with all these unnecessary distributed queries, performance is horrible.

I am pulling my hair out having built my first application using WWF, I have moved the application off the development machine to a machine ready for production for the persistence store will now be on a remote server.
I cannot create a connection string for the persistence store that will allow me to attach to the mdb on the remote server.
the original connection string in development was:
Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename='C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataWorkflowPersistenceStore.mdf';Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=False
I cannot create an equivalent string that does not return a error like this one:
An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataWorkflowPersistenceStore.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
I did simply copy the WorkFlowPersistenceStore.mdf from the development machine to the server machine (completely independant environments) - It has worked in the past for other non wwf databases - Is there something particular about the wwf database that would have prevented this?
I have tried making the persistence store permanently attached (in the development environment) but this returns a different error that implies that a permanently attached database is not allowed - so I assume that the persistence service HAS to have a detached database - Am I correct?
I have tried a UNC naming that is the same on both the machine with the server and the client machine e.g. \MACHINEwwfWorkflowPersistenceStore.mdb - but that still returns an error - Is that not allowed? (or is that not allowed) - does the file path for an attached database have to be recognisable by the client machine, the server machine or both?
MUST the User Instance be True or False or does it not really matter
It is probably obvious that I am not confident in the whole area of connection strings and the effect of different parameters and the truth is I am not certain that I have not completely confused the SQL Server with the various attempts I have made.
Is there someone who could confirm that I am in the right area and could give me an example of what SHOULD work in a situation I have described so that I know that I am roughly right and to keep trying or I am barking up the wrong tree?

I am trying to copy several stored procedures from one server to another.
I am using Transfer SQL Server Objects Task in integration services.
Some of the stored procedures already exist on the destination server and should be overwritten and part of them is new.
I turned DropObjectsFirst option on.
Package fails to execute and returns error that the procedure can't be dropped on the destination server because it doesn't exist.
Does anybody know how to configure the task so it automatically check the existense of copying stored procedure on the destination server?

Using Bulk Insert Task extensively in our solution. Everything was working great till we deployed it in stage columns. The database server is different from application servers. We have ASP.NET web services driving SSIS packages on application server. After struggling thru several security issues to get this working (ended up creating an application pool with a domain account) we are now stuck with this problem. On a different note still don't understand what specific security permission is available to domain account that makes it work.
Read in some blog that SQL Server 2005 SP2 Beta had this (Bulk Insert) fixed but not in final production version. Is there a specific reason why this is so?
SSIS and the API is quite easy to work with but associated security and deployment issues are not always clear. A lot of answers seem to be coming from end users - thanks a lot to all for sharing your experiences - sadly not presented clearly in SSIS documentation.

The "PersonMembership" has all the membership records from 2015 through 2019 of membertypeid 1-4 for the sampling.Since the syntax used in Access do not carry over without modifications to SQL, SQL syntax to make it work in SQL.And if you know the proper SQL syntax for "Between Year(Date())+IIf(Month(Date())>=7,1,0) And Year(Date())+IIf(Month(Date())>=7,1,0)+4" instead of what I currently have in SQL, that would be wonderful.

I decided to try to optimise the performance of my site, run a trace and then DETA.
And I am getting errors like these:

The "trouble" is that those sprocs do exist and that the site apparently is working fine. But not for DETA. As far as DETA is concerned... 54% of my processing power is used to serve syntax errors!
A couple of hints.
The database was an upgrade from 2000.:
- I changed the compatibility level to 2005 but no luck there. I tried with a brand new database, and the errors keep cropping up.
B. The errors were observed in a kit that comprises of a 32bit IIS and 64bit SQL2005 and thought that it had to do with the connectivity of those two.
- I run the traces in one (32bit) server that hosts both IIS and SQL and I am getting the same errors.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have a report that was designed using SQL Reporting Services that sits on a SQL reporting server. It's nothing too exciting, it is essentially a three page application with legal jumbo on pages 2 and 3 and applicant data in fields on page 1.
We use rectangles to force page breaks to page 2 and to page 3.
When running the report on the report server, it shows and prints fine.
When running the report from the QA website internally, it shows and prints just fine.
When running the report from the production website from a machine internally, it shows and prints just fine.
When running the report from outside of the company network, the report is jacked. It obliterates large chunks of text, crams text together, and creates blank pages.
I need help in determining where I even begin with trouble shooting this!

can anyone tell me if they know of a way to automate the update process from development servers to live server, with little interference from an administrator
I have a development team that are constantly updating their databases along with their ASP code, and want to publish changes an a weekly basis. They have asked me for a way to take their new structures, tables, procedures etc, and copy them to the live servers, but NOT to interfere with existing customer data.
Funny I know – and I hate the idea btw :(

I am in the middle of a major migraton project, moving from x86 SQL 2000 to IA64 SQL 2005. I have a business need to link to several legacy servers. I have a number of problems I am trying to solve.
1) Linking a Kerberos server to a non-Kerberos server.
2) Linking x64 or IA64 servers to x86 servers.
3) Linking SQL 2005 to SQL 2000.
Two of the errors I am encountering are:

TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.
Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "SCDC250DB" returned message "Communication link failure".
(Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 10054)

If someone has worked through these problems before, I would appreciate it if you could direct me to the relevant documentation to resolve these issues.

I have an instance of SQL Server Express 2005 running on another box and I have Remote Connections enabled over both TCP/IP and Named Pipes, but on my other box I keep getting the error that the server does not accept Remote Connections.
Any ideas why this might be happening? Is there some other configuration?

HiI'm going insane.I have a club starter kit on my local server which is working fine.I have migrated the database to my remote host and seems to have transfered ok.For a brief period I was able to connect to the database remotely, but now I cannot I get the following, even though SQL Server Surface Area Config is set to accept remote connections.An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. I am trying to add a linked server from a AMD x64 server (Windows 2003) with SQL Server 2005 64 bit to a Server running SQL 2000. These are not in the same domain.
I can create a linked server using the option "Be made using the login's current security context" but can not when trying to specify the security context, i.e. sa and the sa password. When I try I get the following message:
Msg 15185, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_addlinkedsrvlogin, Line 98
There is no remote user 'sa' mapped to local user '(null)' from the remote server 'DTS_FSERVER'.
I have several other x64 server that I have no problem creating a linked server and specifying sa and the sa password.
The problem with using "the login's current security context" option is that I get an error when trying to run any Jobs against the linked server. The job fails withe the following error:
Executed as user: NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM. Access to the remote server is denied because no login-mapping exists. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 7416). The step failed.
I'm sure the two errors are related. Any ideas what is going on?

Has anyone seen this error? It comes up when my app executes a select statement via linked server (from MSSQL 2000 to 2005) the second time it runs. It's basically a timed poll of tables in the remote database. It works once but the second time it executes I get the error from the remote db, it's just a select but I guess the cursor is still open so it can't run again. After the exception the select will run again, once and it just repeats. I have researched it a little and it looks like it mostly has to do with the isolation level of the transaction. Unfortunately based on the componet being used to access the database I don't beleive I have the ability to use transact SQL to call the isolation level (s) listed.
Here's the weird part though, at another site the same scenario is running fine. Same primary and remote db versions of MSSQL as well as the application and it runs fine. I guess my question is what type of setup parameters that may be defined in MSSQL 2005 for the remote database might make it behave in this manner in one instance and not the other? TIA in advance for any thoughts/assistance.

Hi,
We have two servers one is the LIVE SERVER and another one is TEST SERVER. The Dumps from LIVE SERVER has been restored onto TESTSERVER. Now, when I try to run some applications in TESTSERVER it starts executing it in LIVE SERVER.
When I checked up the SELECT @@SERVERNAME value in TEST SERVER, it still refers to TEST SERVER only.
Is there any other table or value I need to check.
Can anyone help me on this.
