Can I EXPORT Tables To A Backup DB And Delete Them From My Production Server?

Jul 23, 2005

I have a database file approximately 30GB in size which creates 3 datatables daily. I need to reduce the size of the DB due to disk sizelimitations. Could I EXPORT some tables, let us say over thirty daysold, to something like DB_Name_Archieve and them delete them from theproduction DB to reduce the size? I also need the ability toreference/read them at a later time as needed. As a side note, could SQL Server use data on a redirected drive i.e.NET Used. This would allow me to move the old tables to the redirecteddrive and reference them as needed. As always, thanks in advance.Peter

Soft Delete In Table, Why Merge Agent Report Hards Delete On Table ?

Feb 1, 2007

Hi seniors

there are two tables involve in replication let say table1 and replicated table is also rep.table1.

we are not deleting records physically in table1 so only a bit in table1 has true when u want to delete a record but the strange thing is that replication agaent report that this is hard delete operation on table1 so download and report hard delete operation and delete the record in replicated table which is very crucial.

plz let me know where am i wrong and how i put it into right way.

there is no triggers on published tables and noother trigger is created on published table.

Can't Delete Old Traces Urgent!

Jan 31, 2002

This one has stumped me. Hopefully somebody can help.
A while ago, I setup a trace that posted the log to the desktop. I needed to stop the trace this morning, so I went into the profiler and deleted the traces. There was a private and shared trace. Now every time I start up something that has to do with sql server, the log pops up on the desktop. I'm not sure why the trace wasn't deleted or stopped. The trace includes what program accessed sql. Whether it is EM or Query analyzer or ISQL. It gets posted in the log. Any suggestions? I need to remove this because the log fills up the drive and causes the server to crash.

URGENT : Can I Delete Distributor_admin??

Feb 8, 2008

I cleaned up a SQL 2005 server database that was being used as a publisher. SQL 2005 server (cluster server Active/Passive)with SP1 was reinstalled on the box. I removed all replication related entries from replication tables and cleaned up the DB. Now, I noticed that distributor_admin login is present. I am going to set this database as a publisher again. Should I go ahead and delete the old distributor_admin account before re setting replication? Please note that before replicatin was cleaned, this DB was used as publisher ONLY. The distributor DB was residing on another server, which was later cleaned up.

Now, does SQL 2005 server reinstall re create distributor_admin AUTOMATICALLY? Or, should I knock off the existing distributor_admin before RE SETTING replication. The distributor DB will be installed on the other server in this case too.

PLEASE HELP!!

What Technique To Use To Update Production Table From Staging Table

Mar 9, 2007

Hi I have a production table in SQL Server 2005 that has approx 500,000 records---every 6 hours this table needs to be truncated and filled

The basic SSIS package uses a script compentant and imports the data into a staging table which has the same structure as the production table. I have a final Execute SQL Task that Truncates the production table and does a Insert into production-select * from stage table.

Takes around 30 seconds to run this last Execute SQL Task--problem is there is a risk that our webservice will query this table during the Execute SQL Task and return incorrect results.

Q1: In this last Execute SQL Task if I used a BEGIN TRANSACTION and COMMIT TRANSACTION; will this be any quicker ?

Q2: In this last Execute SQL Task- would it be better to use a RENAME TABLE technique in TSQL--any code examples ??

Q3:Is there any way in TSQL I can compare EVERY FIELD in two tables ie Stage and Production which have identical data structures and figure out a way to update only the records that changed? Is SQL Server Replication the best way to do this

thanks kindly

Dave

Copy And Delete Table With Foreign Key References(...,...) On Delete Cascade?

Oct 23, 2004

Hello:
Need some serious help with this one...

Background:
Am working on completing an ORM that can not only handles CRUD actions -- but that can also updates the structure of a table transparently when the class defs change. Reason for this is that I can't get the SQL scripts that would work for updating a software on SqlServer to be portable to other DBMS systems. Doing it by code, rather than SQL batch has a chance of making cross-platform, updateable, software...

Anyway, because it needs to be cross-DBMS capable, the constraints are that the system used must work for the lowest common denominator....ie, a 'recipe' of steps that will work on all DBMS's.

The Problem:
There might be simpler ways to do this with SqlServer (all ears :-) - just in case I can't make it cross platform right now) but, with simplistic DBMS's (SqlLite, etc) there is no way to ALTER table once formed: one has to COPY the Table to a new TMP name, adding a Column in the process, then delete the original, then rename the TMP to the original name.

This appears possible in SqlServer too --...as long as there are no CASCADE operations.
Truncate table doesn't seem to be the solution, nor drop, as they all seem to trigger a Cascade delete in the Foreign Table.

So -- please correct me if I am wrong here -- it appears that the operations would be
along the lines of:
a) Remove the Foreign Key references
b) Copy the table structure, and make a new temp table, adding the column
c) Copy the data over
d) Add the FK relations, that used to be in the first table, to the new table
e) Delete the original
f) Done?

The questions are:
a) How does one alter a table to REMOVE the Foreign Key References part, if it has no 'name'.
b) Anyone know of a good clean way to get, and save these constraints to reapply them to the new table. Hopefully with some cross platform ADO.NET solution? GetSchema etc appears to me to be very dbms dependant?
c) ANY and all tips on things I might run into later that I have not mentioned, are also greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Delete Syntax To Delete A Record From One Table If A Matching Value Isn't Found In Another

Nov 17, 2006

I'm trying to clean up a database design and I'm in a situation to where two tables need a FK but since it didn't exist before there are orphaned records.

Tables are:

Brokers and it's PK is BID

The 2nd table is Broker_Rates which also has a BID table.

I'm trying to figure out a t-sql statement that will parse through all the recrods in the Broker_Rates table and delete the record if there isn't a match for the BID record in the brokers table.

I know this isn't correct syntax but should hopefully clear up what I'm asking

DELETE FROM Broker_Rates

WHERE (Broker_Rates.BID <> Broker.BID)

Object Transfer Of Table During Production

Oct 14, 1999

My applications group wants to do a table transfer from one server to another as a means of refreshing the information on the target on a scheduled basis. That means that reports could be running against the target table during the transfer. This has introduced erroneous reports because the object transfer initially truncates the table, then transfers the data. If reports are running during the transfer, they might retrieve no data or only part of a table. I wrote a procedure to make a copy of the table to be transferred, then transfer that new table to the target machine, then drop the target table, then rename the transferred table. Now, I have the slightly smaller problem of doing a DROP TABLE when users are accessing the table. I can't set the database to 'dbo use only' because there are other tables in the database that must be available. Is this really a replication application?

How To Apply Table Changes In My Production Database?

Sep 29, 2007

Here is the scenario:

- I have one production database and one test database.
- In the test database i have done a few changes on the structure - mostly adding new fields in the tables.
- Now i want to apply the table changes to my production database.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how i should do that?

I mean, of course i could just manually check every field and update the changes - but that could take a while -
i guess there are some better ways this could be done, like:
- backup data
- delete tables
- recreate tables using structure of test database
- reinsert data

Is this the correct way? Are there any easy ways to do this?

The changes i made should not make problems regarding data that is already stored (like changing a string field to int)

Inserting Distinct Data From One Table In Another Table, How?!?Really Urgent And Needing Help!!!

May 24, 2007

Hi, I have a table in which I will insert several redundant data. Don't ask why, is Integration services, it only reads data and inserts it in a SQL table. THis way, I have a SQL table with several lines repeating them selves. What I want to do is create a procedure that reads the distinct data and inserts it in another table, but my problem is that I am not able to select data line by line on the original table to save it in local variables and insert it on the another table, I just can select the last line. I've tried a while cycle but no succeed. Here is my code: create proc insertLocalizationASdeclare @idAp int, @macAp varchar(20), @floorAp varchar(2), @building varchar(30), @department varchar(30)select @idAp = idAp from OLTPLocalization where idAp not in (select idAp from dimLocalization)select @macAp=macAp,@floorAp=floorAp,@building=building,@department=department from OLTPLocalizationif (@idAp <> null)beginInsert into dimLocalization VALUES(@idAp,@macAp,@floorAp,@building,@department)endGO This only inserts the last line in the "oltpLocalization" table. O the other hand, like this:create proc aaaaasdeclare @idAp as int, @macAp as varchar(50), @floorAp as int, @building as varchar(50), @department as varchar(50)while exists (select distinct(idAp) from OLTPLocalization)begin    select @idAp =idAp from OLTPLocalization  where idAp not in (select idAp from dimLocalization)    select @macAp = macAp from OLTPLocalization where idAp = @idAp    select @building = building from OLTPLocalization where idAp = @idAp    select @department = department from OLTPLocalization where idAP = @idApif (@idAp <> null)begin    insert into dimLocalization values(@idAp,@macAp,@floorAp,@building,@department)endendgo this retrieves every distinct idAp in each increment on the while statement. The interess of the while is really selecting each different line in the OLTPLocalization table. I did not find any foreach or for each statement, is there any way to select distinct line by line in a sql table and save each column result in variables, to then insert them in another table? I've also thought about web service, that reads the distinct data from the oltpLocalization into a dataset, and then inserts this data into the dimLocalization table. Is there anything I can do?Any guess?Really needing a hand here! Thanks a lot!

Delete Rows In One Table By Referencing Another Table Info

Sep 16, 2004

I have one table that has unique id's associated with each row of information. I want to delete rows of information in one table that have a unique ID that references information in another table.

Here is a basic breakdown of what I am trying to do:

Table1 (the table where the rows need to be deleted from)
Column_x (Holds the id that is unique to the various rows of data - User ID)

Table2 (Holds the user information & has the associated ID)
Column_z (holds the User ID)

I tried this on a test set of tables and could not get it to work. What I am trying to do is skip all rows of Table1 that have ID's present in Table2, and delete the rows of ID's that are not present in Table2.

Code:

SELECT Column_z
FROM dbo.Table2
DELETE FROM dbo.Table1
WHERE Column_z <> Column_x

This did not seem to do what I needed, it did not delete any rows at all.

I wanted it to delete all rows in Table1 that did not have a reference to a user ID that matched any ID's in Column_z of Table2

Then I tried another scenerio that I also needed to do:

Code:

SELECT Column_z, Column_a
FROM dbo.Table2
DELETE FROM dbo.Table1
WHERE Column_z = Column_x AND Column_a='0'

'0' being the user id is inactive so I wanted to delete rows in Table1 and remove all references to users that were in an inactive status in Table2.

Neither one of the Queries wanted to work for me in the Query Analyzer when I ran them. It just said (0) rows affected.

Any ideas on what I am doing wrong here?

Newbie-DELETE A Record In A Table A That Is Related To Table B, And Table B Related To Table A

Mar 20, 2008

Hi thanks for looking at my question

Using sqlServer management studio 2005

My Tables are something like this:

--Table 1 "Employee"
CREATE TABLE [MyCompany].[Employee](
[EmployeeGID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
[BranchFID] [int] NOT NULL,
[FirstName] [varchar](50) NOT NULL,
[MiddleName] [varchar](50) NOT NULL,
[LastName] [varchar](50) NOT NULL,
CONSTRAINT [PK_Employee] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED
(
[EmployeeGID]
)
GO
ALTER TABLE [MyCompany].[Employee]
WITH CHECK ADD CONSTRAINT [FK_Employee_BranchFID]
FOREIGN KEY([BranchFID])
REFERENCES [myCompany].[Branch] ([BranchGID])
GO
ALTER TABLE [MyCompany].[Employee] CHECK CONSTRAINT [FK_Employee_BranchFID]

-- Table 2 "Branch"
CREATE TABLE [Mycompany].[Branch](
[BranchGID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
[BranchName] [varchar](50) NOT NULL,
[City] [varchar](50) NOT NULL,
[ManagerFID] [int] NOT NULL,
CONSTRAINT [PK_Branch] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED
(
[BranchGID]
)
GO
ALTER TABLE [MyCompany].[Branch]
WITH CHECK ADD CONSTRAINT [FK_Branch_ManagerFID]
FOREIGN KEY([ManagerFID])
REFERENCES [MyCompany].[Employee] ([EmployeeGID])
GO
ALTER TABLE [MyCompany].[Branch]
CHECK CONSTRAINT [FK_Branch_ManagerFID]

--Foreign IDs = FID
--generated IDs = GID
Then I try a simple single row DELETE

DELETE FROM MyCompany.Employee
WHERE EmployeeGID= 39

Well this might look like a very basic error:
I get this Error after trying to delete something from Table €œEmployee€?

The DELETE statement conflicted with the
REFERENCE constraint "FK_Branch_ManagerFID".
The conflict occurred in database "MyDatabase",
table "myCompany.Branch", column 'ManagerFID'.

Yes what I€™ve been doing is to deactivate the foreign key constraint, in both tables when performing these kinds of operations, same thing if I try to delete a €œBranch€? entry, basically each entry in €œbranch€? and €œEmployee€? is child of each other which makes things more complicated.

My question is, is there a simple way to overcome this obstacle without having to deactivate the foreign key constraints every time or a good way to prevent this from happening in the first place? Is this when I have to use €œON DELETE CASCADE€? or something?

Thanks
