Notifying Multiple Applications Of Table Update
Jul 20, 2005
Hello,
I am writing an application using Visual Studio .NET (C#). The
application will be run on several workstations simultaneously, and
all of them will be accessing a single sql server database. I am
trying to have it so that when one of the applications updates the
fields of a table in the database, all of the other applications are
notified (Without polling the DB).
I have been trying to do this by using a SQL Trigger and calling
RaisError from within. This will create an exception for the calling
application (what i wanted), but I can get any of the other
applications to see the error.
Is there a way of accomplishing this using triggers? Is there another
way of notifying all applications of a database change without the use
of polling?

I have a table called ADSCHL which contains the school_code as Primary key and other two table as
RGDEGR(common field as SCHOOl_code) and RGENRl( Original_school_code) which are refrencing the ADSCHL. if a school_code will be updated both the table RGDEGR (school_code) and RGERNL ( original_schoolcode) has to be updated as well. I have been provided a new data that i have imported to SQL server using SSIS with table name as TESTCEP which has a column name school_code. I have been assigned a task to update the old school_code vale ( ADSCHL) with new school_code ( TESTCEP) and make sure the changes happen across all 3 tables.
I tried using Merge Update function not sure if this is going to work.
Update dbo.ADSCHL
SET dbo.ADSCHL.SCHOOL_CODE = FD.SCHOOL_Code
FROM dbo.ADSCHL AD
INNER JOIN TESTCEP FD
ON AD.SCHOOL_NAME = FD.School_Name

I need to update more than one record at once. I have ~ 100 records that I have to update and don't want to execute query 100 times.
My query looks like this:
Update Table1
Set Table1.field1 = ( select Table2.field1 from Table2 where Table2.field2 IN ('a', 'b', 'c')
where Table1.field2 IN ( 'a', 'b', 'c')
It obviously failed because subquery returned more than one value and error message stated that I can't use '=' operator in this case.
My question: how could I update the same column from many records in one execution?

Hi there!
I expercience some problems in sending the alert mails to the operator when an Agent Failure Alert happens.
I have setup MSSQL 2005 with merge replication and have setup mail the ss2005 way. I also can send test mails via the Database mail context menu.
I have setup a operator with a valid emailadress and enabled is checked
On the notifications page 'Agent Failure Alert' is checked.
When this alert fires the number of occurences in the history of this alert is incremented (as I can see via the alertsection-Agentfailure-history) this alert is also enabled. The problem is that the operator does not get notified!
So I can send test email from the DB, have setup an Operator with emailadress, have enabled an alert and see the number of occurences of this alert increment. I don't get any alert mails. The notifications attempt in the history page of the operator does not increment. It says: [never emailed]
Well I hope you can help!

We have control table which will be useful whether we need to start the job or not. If we are starting the Job we will make it to 1.
Below is the Table Structure.
Table Name IN_USE_FG
CUST_D 0
PROD_D 0
GEO_D 0
DATE_D 0
Now we have different packages for 4 tables data loading. These 4 packages will start at a time. Before going to load the data we have to make the Flag to 1 and after that we have to load it. Because of this we have written Update statement to update the Value to 1 in respective Package.
Now we are getting dead lock because we are using same table at a same time. Because we are updating different records.

I have a table #vert where I have value column. This data needs to be updated into two channel columns in #hori table based on channel number in #vert table.
CREATE TABLE #Vert (FILTER VARCHAR(3), CHANNEL TINYINT, VALUE TINYINT)
INSERT #Vert Values('ABC', 1, 22),('ABC', 2, 32),('BBC', 1, 12),('BBC', 2, 23),('CAB', 1, 33),('CAB', 2, 44) -- COMBINATION OF FILTER AND CHANNEL IS UNIQUE
CREATE TABLE #Hori (FILTER VARCHAR(3), CHANNEL1 TINYINT, CHANNEL2 TINYINT)
INSERT #Hori Values ('ABC', NULL, NULL),('BBC', NULL, NULL),('CAB', NULL, NULL) -- FILTER IS UNIQUE IN #HORI TABLE
One way to achieve this is to write two update statements. After update, the output you see is my desired output
UPDATE H
SET CHANNEL1= VALUE
FROM #Hori H JOIN #Vert V ON V.FILTER=H.FILTER
WHERE V.CHANNEL=1 -- updates only channel1
UPDATE H
SET CHANNEL2= VALUE
FROM #Hori H JOIN #Vert V ON V.FILTER=H.FILTER
WHERE V.CHANNEL=2 -- updates only channel2
SELECT * FROM #Hori -- this is desired output
my channels number grows in #vert table like 1,2,3,4...and so Channel3, Channel4....so on in #hori table. So I cannot keep writing too many update statements. One other way is to pivot #vert table and do single update into #hori table.

The objective is to identify orders where an order fee has been applied incorrectly. I have multiple orders per customer, my table contains an orderID and a customerID. Currently if the customer places additional orders before the previous orders have been closed/cancelled, then additional fees are being applied.
Let's say I'm comparing order #1 to order #2. I need to identify these rows where the following is true:-
The CustID is the same.
Order #2 has a more recent order date.
Order #2 has a FeeDate Before the CancelledDate of Order #1 (or Order #1 has no cancellation date).
So in the table the orderID:2835692 of CustID: 24643 has a valid order fee. But all the subsequently placed orders have fees which were applied before the first order was cancelled and so I want to update the FeeInvalid column with a 'Y'. The first fee will always be valid.
I think I understand why the code I am trying doesn't achieve the result I want but I can't figure out how to write it correctly. Below is one example of code I've tried and also code to create the table and insert some test data.
update t1
SET FeeInvalid = 'Y'
FROM MockData t1 Join MockData t2 on t1.CustID = t2.CustID
WHERE t1.CustID = t2.CustID
AND t2.OrderDate > t1.OrderDate
AND t2.FeeDate > t1.CancelledDate
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[MockData](
[OrderID] [float] NULL,
[code]....

I need to update multiple columns in a table with multiple condition.
For example, this is my Query
update Table1
set weight= d.weight,
stateweight=d.stateweight,
overallweight=d.overallweight
from
(select * from table2)d
where table1.state=d.state and
table1.month=d.month and
table1.year=d.year
If table matches all the three column (State, month, year), it should update only weight column and if it matches(state ,year) it should update only the stateweight column and if it matches(year) it should update only the overallweight column
I can't write an update query for each condition separately because its a huge select

Hi SQL fans,I realized that I often encounter the same situation in a relationdatabase context, where I really don't know what to do. Here is anexample, where I have 2 tables as follow:__________________________________________ | PortfolioTitle|| Portfolio |+----------------------------------------++-----------------------------+ | tfolio_id (int)|| folio_id (int) |<<-PK----FK--| tfolio_idfolio (int)|| folio_name (varchar) | | tfolio_idtitle (int)|--FK----PK->>[ Titles]+-----------------------------+ | tfolio_weight(decimal(6,5)) |+-----------------------------------------+Note that I also have a "Titles" tables (hence the tfolio_idtitlelink).My problem is : When I update a portfolio, I must update all theassociated titles in it. That means that titles can be either removedfrom the portfolio (a folio does not support the title anymore), addedto it (a new title is supported by the folio) or simply updated (atitle stays in the portfolio, but has its weight changed)For example, if the portfolio #2 would contain :[ PortfolioTitle ]id | idFolio | idTitre | poids1 2 1 102 2 2 203 2 3 30and I must update the PortfolioTitle based on these values :idFolio | idTitre | poids2 2 202 3 352 4 40then I should1 ) remove the title #1 from the folio by deleting its entry in thePortfolioTitle table2 ) update the title #2 (weight from 30 to 35)3 ) add the title #4 to the folioFor now, the only way I've found to do this is delete all the entriesof the related folio (e.g.: DELETE TitrePortefeuille WHERE idFolio =2), and then insert new values for each entry based on the new givenvalues. Is there a way to better manage this by detecting which value has to beinserted/updated/deleted?And this applies to many situation :(If you need other examples, I can give you.thanks a lot!ibiza

I have a table where table row gets updated multiple times(each column will be filled) based on telephone call in data.
Initially, I have implemented after insert trigger on ROW level thinking that the whole row is inserted into table will all column values at a time. But the issue is all columns are values are not filled at once, but observed that while telephone call in data, there are multiple updates to the row (i.e multiple updates in the sense - column data in row is updated step by step),
I thought to implement after update trigger , but when it comes to the performance will be decreased for each and every hit while row update.
I need to implement after update trigger that should be fired on column level instead of Row level to improve the performance?

Hi everyone, ok so heres my problem. I'm currently writting some scrips to query an simple inventory database. heres what i'm trying to do.
I have a .asp webpage that has a query on it that can dispaly everything in the inventory... old and new in a big html table.
The idea is to not actualy delete anything because i would still like to have a record of it's existance but at the same time i dont want it to clutter my "current" inventory i guess it would call it.
I added another column named deleted which is set to the Yes/No and TRUE/FALSE data types, i also put in a check box at the end of every row on the webpage, the idea here is that if a box is checked it will record that row's id via address bar/Get method and then when i hit submit it will run the update query for those rows checked
i changed my inventory query so that if an item's deleted column is checked to TRUE then it will not be displayed, so showing only the non deleted items.
UPDATE Licenses SET Licenses.deleted = TRUE
WHERE Licenses.LicensesID=33;
thats what i'm using to change it case by case basis, but what i would like to do is somthing like
UPDATE Licenses SET Licenses.deleted = TRUE
WHERE Licenses.LicensesID=33,34,67....so on
LicensesID is just a auto incrememted field jsut to give a unique value to a license's row..
does anyone know any tricks to accomplish what i'm trying to do? So far I havn't really found any satisfactory examples online. and i dont really want to completly change the structure of everything unless someone suggust somthing that is clearly a better way of doing things
thanks,
O

Hi,I have a a table that is primarily a linking table that contains values for categories indid int Indicator ID indtype int Indicator Type can be either 0 or 1catflagnum int Category Flag Number the number of the Category catflagvalue int Cat Flag Value The Value for that category this table can then be updated from a web form. The Question I have is that can I do this in one statement or do I have to do it one at a time i.e The Data set could look something like indid = 3 'This value will be the same for all rows indtype = 0 'This will be the Same for all rows Catflagnum = 1 'This value will change Catflagvalue = 1 'This value will change indid = 3 'This value will be the same for all rows indtype = 0 'This will be the Same for all rows Catflagnum = 2 'This value will change Catflagvalue = 3 'This value will change indid = 3 'This value will be the same for all rows indtype = 0 'This will be the Same for all rows Catflagnum = 3 'This value will change Catflagvalue = 1 'This value will change indid = 3 'This value will be the same for all rows indtype = 0 'This will be the Same for all rows Catflagnum = 4 'This value will change Catflagvalue = 5 'This value will change A further complication is that in the table an entry may not be in that table for the category so we would possibly have to check if the record exist or do an insertI am stumped on this one?
