Novell Login Prevents SQL Access??
Jan 6, 2008
I found this on the SQL Help page on the Data Link Connection Properties Tab (created by opening a 'test.udl' file on the workstation):
"The SQL Server system administrator must have associated your Microsoft Windows network ID with a SQL Server login ID."
While I can log into the SQL Server from a different workstation NOT using Novell, and using my Windows Authenticated UserID and PW, trying the same from a Novell networked workstation using the UserID and Password which is good ONLY at that one workstation, I cannot access the same SQL Server.
How does one "associate a Microsoft Windows network ID" when Novell is being used to access the Windows network?
The IT department says Novell should have not effect a Windows login, but it apparently is.

I'm trying to deploy an SSIS package to a server ("SQL Server" deployment). The package does have an encrypted password, which has both worked nicely and not in the past. It's entirely possible that our other "DBA" has busted something on the server, thus preventing my access to it, but I'm curious if anyone has any experience w/ error code 0x80004005 (Login timeout expired) in the SaveToSqlServer method.
Is that just the generic you-can't-log-in message, or is it really trying to imply that the SQL Server is not responding to login attempts? Thanks for any help, Ben

I need to determine the following about the current authenticated Windows domain user who is trying to access a SQL Server via a trusted connection.
1 Has the current user been granted login access to the trusted SQL Server?
2 Has the current user been granted access to a specific database?
3 Is the current user a member of a specific database role such as (DB_ROLE_ADMINISTRATORS)?
Thanks,

There's always been a lot of confusion about what prevents connection pooling -- when I was learning .Net 1.0, I was told that any differences in connection strings -- even cosmetic ones -- would prevent pooling (or, more accuratlely, that they could only share connections with identically formatted connections). For example,
conn string1 =
Data Source=myServerAddress;Initial Catalog=myDataBase;User Id=myUsername;Password=myPassword;

I need to setup a server on a network where Novell is the NOS.
question : how can I configure the server (NT4 sp4 / SqlServer 7.0 ),
so that the "Novell User/PW" will authenticate for my database
on the NT/SqlServer server.
What I am trying to avoid is the duplication of user maintenance
on the system.

We use Novell NDS security to access applications on NT servers. I have an application on an NT server that will connect to an other NT
server that is running SQL Server 7.0. Is there any way to have/use the Novell login/password passed to SQL Server 7.0 once logged
on to the NT application server?
Either passing as a login/password or converted to a group for SQL Server use. I would like to limit the number of times a business user
needs to type a login/password. Hopefuly this would work like "trusted connections".
Thanks

I am running SQL Server 6.5 on a Windows NT 4.0 Server. File and printer services etc. are handled by Novell. This server is the only NT box in the shop. All workstations are running Windows 95. My problem is that response from the SQL server is extremely slow. When I make a request to the server from a workstation my Novell server utilization peaks for several seconds.I dont know why the Novell server should have any involvment? What Net libraries and protocols should I be using?

Hi,
*relative newbie warning*
I use Visual Studio Standard edition with the built-in version of SQL Server. Now I chose a new image catalogueing app, IDImager, that uses SQL Server Express to store photo info. The idea is that I can use the database also with my own code, or transfer the data to another app/database in the future if necessary.
IDImager needs SQL Express with the 'connectivity components' installed using 'mixed mode'.
This is their instruction page: http://www.idfoxx.com/support/idipro/install/
However, that option is not available in VS 2005 Standard and when I try to install these components with SQL Express I get the message that's not possible because VS 2005 restricts the install options.
So far I gather that the free SQL Express gives one more options than my paid-for Visual Studio 2005 Standard edition, which seems a bit weird.
Can anyone tell me how to work around this problem so I can install the IDImager app and use VS 2005 at the same time?
Thanks, Philip

I am new to SSIS but this does not seem like it should be a hard thing to do. Here is the background:
Windows Server 2003
SQL Server 2005
SSIS
Logged in to server as Admin
I've created a SSIS package that I want to run as a Job. In it there is a Ole DB Connection to a VFP Database on a Novell Server. Client for Netware Services is started when server is but NOT logged into. When I created the package everything runs fine. Note that I had to login when I created the Data Link. I can even run it from the SQL Server Package Store. As soon as I restart the server and try to run it I get an error that the file path is invalid in both SSIS and the Package Store. I check the connection string and it looks good.
The connection is availible in My Network Places
If I open the connection and login it runs fine again.
How do I intiate the network connection and then close it again??

I have two tasks on a control flow. First task is Execute SQL task which drop an index. Second one is a Data Flow task. I also have an error handler for packcage_onerror. Because there is no index in the database, the first task rasies an error and package on error catches the error. The precedence constraint for the Data Flow task in "success". I don't expect the data flow task to execute because of the error. But it does. Is this the right behavior because I have already handle the error? I don't want the the job to continue if there is any error. I believe I should raise error in the error handler. Pleae help me how to do this. Thanks

In SQL2005, is it possible to restrict incoming sql or windows authentication logins by source hostname or IP address? Perhaps using endpoints?
We are currently using hosts file on the db server as a temporary solution, but the SA will not allow us to use this as a permanent solution.
The app team I support is asking me to build an "idiot proof" database so that an Dev or Test app server they may configure, doesn't unintentionally connect to the Production database and damage/alter data.
Don't worry, I've already asked if they can't follow some kind of M&P's to prevent this kind of silly behavior, but they insist on DBA team creating a bullet-proof database that can outsmart app developers who try to attempt something dumb like this.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
TIA,
Phil

I have a user who cannot login to a .mdb when he is logged

No one can login to the .mdb when he is logged in to Windows.
He CAN login to the same .mdb if someone else is logged in

When the user logs in he gets the following error:
MS SQL Server Login

I have removed and recreated the ODBC Connection
while he is logged in. I have tried changing the trusted login to
administrator (in the window that pops up when he fails to connect).
He has the permissions he needs to the .mdb because he can
login under anyone elses profile.
I tried copying his profile to a brand new user and ended up
with the same result.
This leads me to wonder if there is some corruption in one
of his profiles .dat files or ???
This is the boss account and he does not want to be given a
new username and profile

Hi, all:I have been tasked with determining how many licenses of a certain SQLServer 2000-based application are actually in use: in other words, record or log connections made to the database by clients.Client connections will be made with a generic SQL Server ID which hasbeen granted access to the DB; security is maintained inside theapplication, and a user only logs in with their personal ID in theapplication itself.I know I can go in at any time into the management/CurrentActivity/Process info and see current sessions against the target db,grab the host name from that view, and do an "nbtstat -a" to glean thelogin ID of the connected user.If there were a way to record connections made to a DB in the eventviewer or SQL log, I could hopefully get the information I need. But I see no way to have the SQL Server log connection information likethis.Does anyone know how I might collect this info? Thanks!Cheers,BD

I have a database in development in SQL Server 6.5 that needs to be occasionally deleted and rebuilt from a script when table structures are changed. I found that when very complex queries were performed, the 2 MB default size of tempdb filled up and returned errors, so I went to the Enterprise Manager to expand tempdb, learned that I had to first expand a device to expand tempdb into, and foolishly chose to expand tempdb into the same device space used by my application, instead of into one of the system databases. Now when I try to delete the device in preparation for its rebuild, the Enterprise Manager responds with an error message saying the device can't be deleted because it contains system tables. Is there any way to get the expanded portion of tempdb out of my application device so that the device can be deleted, without reinstalling SQL Server?

We are having problems with the response times from UPS WorldShip after switching from SQL Server 2000 to 2005.
I think that the problem can be fixed from the database end by setting the permissions correctly for the user/role/schema that is being used by WorldShip to connect to the server but, I'm not sure how to do it.
The Setup
Client
UPS WorldShip 8.0 running on XP Pro SP2
Connecting via Sql Native Client via SQL Server Login
Connection is over a T1 via VPN
Server -
SQL Server Standard Edition on Windows Server 2003
2x3ghz Xeon processors w/ 4gb ram
The user that is being used to connect runs under it's own schema and role and only needs access to two tables in a specific database on the server.
What UPS WorldShip seems to be doing is on a continual basis retrieving information about the layout of the database via calls such as the following
exec [sys].sp_tables NULL,NULL,NULL,N'''VIEW''',@fUsePattern=1
exec [webservices].[sys].sp_columns_90 N'CHECK_CONSTRAINTS',N'INFORMATION_SCHEMA',N'webservices',NULL,@fUsePattern=1
exec [webservices].[sys].sp_columns_90 N'COLUMN_DOMAIN_USAGE',N'INFORMATION_SCHEMA',N'webservices',NULL,@fUsePattern=1
This seems to happen whenever WorldShip contacts the database to find out information in order to be able to create a mapping to the database as well as exporting information to it. Because of the VPN connection these calls take anywhere from 20 seconds to 3 minutes.
I am fairly confident that the problem lies with these calls to the database which I was able to capture using the SQL Server Profiler. We have experimented with the following setups.
1. Connecting to SQL 2000 over VPN with SQL Native Client - No noticeable lag
2. Connecting to SQL 2000 over VPN with SQL Server 2000 driver - No Noticable lag
3. Connecting to SQL 2005 locally with SQL Native Client - No Noticable lag
4. Connectiong to SQL 2005 over VPN with SQL Native Client - Lots of lag
Our network admin has been testing the network connections over the VPN and it is very responsive with none of the long wait times found when using UPS WorldShip.
Now for a possible solution other than getting UPS to fix their software. I think that by limiting the tables and views that the login is able to see will cut down significantly on the lag times that are being experienced. The problem is that there were 264 items that were being returned by sp_tables. I was able to cut that down to 154. I am unable to disable access to any of the rest of the items because they are server scoped.
Take for example the INFORMATION_SCHEMA.CHECK_CONSTRAINTS view. When I try to deny access to it in any way I get the following error:
Permissions on server scoped catalog views or system stored procedures or extended stored procedures can be granted only when the current database is master (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 4629)
Am I able to deny access to these types of object and if so how? Also, what objects should be accessable such as sys.database_mirroring, sys.database_recovery_status, etc?

When I try to connect to "Integration services" in "SSMS" with my window authentication, for some servers can able to connect. But for some server i am getting error like "Access denied".
To fix these Access Denied, as per instruction from google, i have configured the Administrative Tools-->Component Services->Component Services-->Computer-->My Computer-->DCOM Config-> Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services 11.0--> Right
Click-->Properties-->navigate to “Security”--> then adding the Active direcotry login in the "Launch and Activation Permissions", "Access Permissions" and "Configuration Permissions".
Then this issue was fixed. I want to know why this was happening to some servers only, what is the reason behind this.
