ODBC Connection Failure
Sep 12, 2006
Hello there!
This is my issue: I do have a database which back end is in SQL Server 2005 and front end is in ACCESS 2003. When one of the forms is trying to write duplicate information in any of the tables, there is a message coming "ODBC -- call failure", I wrote code trying to avoid that situation, but is keeps on coming. Does anybody have any idea about how to handle this exception? I would really appreciate a help on this subject.
Thanks;
Luisofo

My application (written in a proprietary old 4GL) is connecting to a SQL 2000 database via ODBC
This works fine nearly all the time, but occasionally, it throws the following error when trying to connect :
Connection Failed
SQLState '01000'
SQL Server Error: 10060
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]Connection Open(Connect()).
Connection Failed:
SQLState '08001'
SQL Server Error: 17
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
This error is displayed in a Windows dialog box. When the OK button on this dialog is clicked, it throws up a login/password box. When this is filled in and submitted, the connection is usually made cleanly and the application continues.
The big problem is that the application is an unattended service, and this dialog can go unnoticed for quite a while.
If these dialogs are 'Cancelled' rather than 'OK'd, the 4GL receives the error and arranges to re-try the connection itself.
Is ODBC responsible for popping up the interactive dialog, and, if so, can I do anything to force it to return an error instead ?

I am having a problem getting the ODBC driver to connect.
I just installed VS2005 and can't connect to my SQL2000 server. It is there. I can't connect using either one of the mix mode authentication.
I can login to SQL from another pc when logged in with this user name. It has to be something on this pc blocking it.
Iam not rying to do this from a ASP web page just trying to setup a ODBC driver and I get these errors.
I get the error:" Login failed for user (null)" Not associated with a trusted connection
Thanks

I am using SSIS 2014 with the below .net framework version and installed in Windows server 2012 R2 . I have installed my client's odbc drivers (both 32 bit and 64 bit) in my production server and created ODBC system DSNs for 32 bit and 64 bit.
When i open SSIS 2014 and tried to create the odbc connection but i can able to see only the 32 bit system DSN connection ,i can't able to see my 64 bit odbc system dsn connection.

And i installed my client odbc drivers(32,64 bit) and created ODBC system DSNs in my local system and when i open ssis 2014 and i can able to see both the ODBC system DSNS(32,64) connections from SSIS ODBC connection.
I am using below version of .net framework in my local system which was installed in windows 7 and i have SSIS 2012 also installed in my system and i can able to see both ODBC connections using 2012 as well in my local system.

I apologize if this is not the correct forum for this posting. Looking at the descriptions, it appeared to be the best choice.
I am running Windows XP Pro SP2. I have installed the SQL Native Client for
XP. However, when I try to add a new data source through ODBC Connection
Manager, SQL Native Client is not listed as an option. I have followed this procedure on three other systems with no problems. What would be causing the
SQL Native Client to not show up in the list of available ODBC data sources?

I have started to see regular occurences of "ODBC error 40001- serialization failure" in the log of a client website (using cold fusion) and would be grateful for any suggestions on likely causes and solutions. The error message also mentions deadlock victims. Thank you in advance.

Okay-- if anyone can solve this they are truly the SQL genius! We are getting this error when we run a VB program that we use to access an SQL database on a server across our network on a workstation. In fact we get this same error when we even run the program on the server where the SQL database is running or on any of our workstations. Here is the error message:
08501:[Micorsoft][odbc sql server driver] communications link failure
Now the odd thing is that many other functions in the workstation application work fine and retrieve data from SQL but certain data requests by the workstation application fail with the above error message and we get this message consistently. Even though it appears that different workstations running the identical Vb application will get this error consistently but in different locations when running the application. We were running SQL 6.5 on an old server, with the workstation application for literally years without any problems. We also decided to upgrade to a new server, installed server 2000 operating system and the latest version of SQl -- moved all the databases pointed the workstations odbc at this new server and get exactly the same error in the same location in the workstation applications. The programmer that wrote the application and designed the database in SQL can't find the problem and a number of other computer "experts" also could not find the error. We did add a new linksys DSL router/firewall but everything kept working after this installation for several weeks so I don't know if this is the problem on the network. THe programmer also noted that he had problems using terminal services on our network to connect to his office computer and decided that there must be some network issues that are causing the ODBC communicaitions to fail and also terminal services to fail-- or of course they may be unrelated. Has anyone ever seen this ODBC communication error in their travels through SQL implementations? Any help will be greatly appreciated. If we can't fix this we will have to abandon a software application that has been used for over five years and just too complex to rewrite.

I'm "trying" to set up Replication. The Publishing/Distribution server is in one domain, and the subscribing server is in another. Both domains are fully trusted.
The synchronization step builds the .tmp file, but the repl_subscriber Distribution task bites the dust with an error message, "28000[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server] Login failed".
The setting on the distribution options dialog box is ODBC, SQL Server. I'm not using a special login/password. I've even tried putting a user name and password there, and it doesn't work. The ODBC connections test out fine on both servers. Any suggestions where I've gone wrong?
Thanks,
Layne

We are experiencing failures when accessing a datatype="Attachments" field in a query in an MS Access 2007 database using ACE ODBC or OLEDB drivers.
We are using an MS Access 2007 database
ACE ODBC/OLEDB drivers installed (i.e. Office 2007, which installs these drivers)
DB contains a table with a field of type "Attachments" (which is new in MS Access 2007)
DB contains a query that selects the fields of the above table
Using ACE ODBC or ACE OLEDB drivers to display the table works fine. The "Attachments" field is displayed as the file name of the attachment(s).
However, using either ACE ODBC or ACE OLEDB to display the query (i.e. NOT the table) results in either incorrect results or unexpected failures of the ODBC/OLEDB drivers.
Error using ODBC (using "ODBC Test"):
=============================
select * from Query1 does not give an error, but displays a "1" for the Attachment field.
select Attachments from Query1 gives the following error:
stmt: szSqlState = "HY000", *pfNativeError = -3087, *pcbErrorMsg = 97,
*ColumnNumber = -2, *RowNumber = -2
MessageText = "[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Reserved error (|);
there is no message for this error."
Error using OLEDB (using "RowSetViewer"):
================================
select * from Query1 gives the following error:
Interface: Unknown
Result: 0x0004001 = E_NOTIMPL
FormatMessage: €œNot implemented
File: F:DepotSQLVaultmdac28sdkSamplesoledb
owsetviewerSDKobji386CRowset.cpp
Line: 616
select Attachments from Query1 gives the following error:
Interface: IID_ICommand
Result: 0x0004005 = E_FAIL
IErrorInfo: [0x0000f3f1] €œUnspecified error€?
File: F:DepotSQLVaultmdac28sdkSamplesoledb
owsetviewerSDKobji386CCommand.cpp
Line: 439
If it would help to analyze the problem, I have a folder containing all pertinent files (bare-bone database, tools, instructions) to reproduce this. I could attach it as a ZIP file, if requested.
Thanks,
Joe

I am trying to write a simple program for test purpose with VB .Net 2005 and SQL Server Express 2005. My server is not even in the same state as me, but I have the following on the server:
Server 2003 Web Edition SP1
SQL Server Express 2005
I am writing in the following:
Visual Basic 2005 Pro Edition
I have read where you can setup Express to allow TCP/IP connection, and I have done what it stated HERE (http://www.datamasker.com/SSE2005_NetworkCfg.htm). However, I am still not able to connect to the DB on the remote server.
I go to:
Tools --> Connect to Server --> Type IP and get the connection failed to connec to server "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx"
I even tried:
Tools --> Connect to Server --> Type IPSQLEXPRESS and get the connection failed to connec to server "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx"
Has anyone been able to do this, or am I wasting my time? If I can get the SQL Server to do as requested then I am going to purchase and work with it, however, I want to test out before I spend the $$$$$ to begin the full project. If anyone can be of assistance here I would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.

* It is an MSDE and not a WMSDE
* Firewall is turned off
* Server process is listening on 0.0.0.0:1433
* TCP/IP and Named Pipes are enabled using server network utility
* LoginMode=2 is set for mixed mode authentication in the registry
* Tried restaring the Process and even windows after the changes.

Hi,
Yesterday, one of the computers on the network of our SQL server experienced a connection failure while using two specific jobs in a table containing assignments for jobs. The data interaction occurs from a Data Access Page, and from what I've learned, the nature of a DAP is such that the client not only connects to the web server but actually also establishes a direct connection to the SQL Server (we use a backend of MS SQL Server 2003). The data is still inside the tables, but on the Data Access Page, any data that was opened during the connection failure does not show up anymore from any computer.
My guess is that there was corruption of some sort on another layer beneath the actual data layer that cannot be accessed directly or viewed. To remedy this problem, I am going to try to recreate all affected records and rebuild all table ID ties manually with append and update queries. Does anyone know the actual problem or corruption that occurs during a connection failure? Is there a way to access the affected layer(s) and undo the corruption or remedy the affect so the records can be used? Is the problem with the SQL Data itself or on a layer with MS Access/MS DAP?
This data is very important and needs to be used today and was supposed to be used yesterday. If anyone could help me in this matter or provide a better way to undo the supposed corruption, it would be greatly appreciated :)!
thanks in advance,
mellamokb
PS - I don't know if this makes a difference, but other data has been changed in the same database/tables since the connection failure, so a complete reversion back to the system at that point in time would mean loss of other updated data.

Just stumbled over the interesting bug -
if you have an SQLExpress server and the "allow remote connection" in SQL Instance is turned ON, it doesn't means that it works if you create some aliases for this instance
If Im trying to connect to SQLExpress via new created alias ('localhost' for example) I got the "SQL Server does not allow remote connections" error. Albeit, connecting to ".SQLExpress" is successful.
I've checked the properties of locahost DB instance in SQL Management Studio - remote connection is allowed.
I've restarted the SQLExpress instance.
There is no SQLServer or other instances on my PC
But it doesn't work
How to fix this and allows to connect to sql instance via aliases?

I have some tables that I need to wipeout and reload once per day. So I have created a T-SQL task that does a truncate table, then a data flow task, then a update statistics task. Running those works fine, but as soon as I put them all into a sequence container and set the container to require transactions, the first step gets a connection failure. "Failed to acquire connection "<name>". Connection may not be configured correctly or you may not have the right permissions on this connection". I am using a .Net SQLClient data provider for the T-SQL task and in the data flow task I have to use a OLEDB provider so that I can run the task locally in development.
Is there something I am doing wrong or is there some other way to handle truncate, load, update stats all in a transaction?
Thanks.

Hello,
I have encountered a problem with my data source connection. I have a data souce that uses a SQL Login to access a remote server. When I test the connection in the Data Source Designer all works fine. Even when I add the data source as a new data connection in my SSIS package an use it in a OLE DB Source component it works fine, in the preview window.
But when I try to run the package in debug mode i get the following error message,
SSIS package "rXolapform.dtsx" starting.
Information: 0x4004300A at Data Flow Task, DTS.Pipeline: Validation phase is beginning.

Does anyone have any idea of what it could be?
Thanks in advance!

Hey all, 2 questions.
Is there a way to 'refresh' the value of adodb.connection.state? and When my ado class reconnects after a dropped connection i still get connection failure errors.
I'm trying to make the connection b/n the my work's app and mssql server more 'robust'.
Our ado class tests the connection in the 'execute' method ie if connect() execute db task
.connect() is
IF this.loConnection.State = adStateOpen
*-- The connection is already open.
ELSE
create connection
ENDIF
return (this.loConnection.State = adStateOpen)
Now, this works fine when starting up the app, and everything runs fine, but *in theory* it should be able re-establish the connection at any time. So i kill the connection @ on the sql server while the app is running and try to perform a task that requires a db connection.
problem is that 'this.loConnection.State' is still equal to 1 even though the connection is no longer there.
It gets changed to 0 when the .execute fails but the failure is less than graceful... and although it reconnects (sp_who shows a new connection), it seems like the ado object is trying to connect using the old connection rather than the new one. command.activeconnection is set to the new connection in the .connect method so i dunno what's up.
Any ideas?

Overview. I am converting over from MSDE to SQL Express. My front end program is unable to connect to the database. To troubleshoot, from the remote computer I tried connecting with the management program and I get the Error 26 unable to connect.
(The connection string worked previously (yesterday) when using MSDE as the server. When I installed SQL Express I named it the same instance as the server name under MSDE. I also use server authtication on both with same user name and password. As stated below I cannot connect using the managment console.)
Here is what I have done: I made sure that the SQL Server configuration has been changed to allow network connections (both TCP and named pipes). I have disable windows firewall on both machines. I confirmed that I can connect from the remote machined to the server by network browsing. Both machines are running XP Proff. There is no other security software running on either machine.
More Info. when attempting to log on I am using the server authntication, I use "sa" as the user id plus my password.
Goal. The front end of database program connects to the server remotely using a program called Hamachi over the internet. This works without a problem on MSDE. But for now I am simply try to connect using the managment program which lets you browse for other serves. When I do this it shows the remote computer, but not the name of the computer but not the SQL server which I type in like the following: "INTELsql1"
What I have not Done: I have not changed any permissions or added any users to the server, since this does not seem necessary. As stated the user of remote machine can connect to the server and change files.
Would appreciate any suggestions or tips. Thanks.
I HAVE READ THE POST FROM MAY 13, 2007 AND TAKEN ALL STEPS SUGGESTED EXCEPT MAKING SURE THE BROWSERS SERVICE IS RUNNING ON SERVER WHICH I WILL DO NOW.

Hi,
I have very little, to zero, IT configuration knowledge and I am hoping that someone is able to help me out.
I am currently writing the SQL scripts and developing the reports in the SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio, and then deploying the reports to the server for managers to eventually view.
Recently the IT section updated the test database (temp) that is connected to SQL Server 2005, with the live database (production), so that the data and database structure were up to date for me to create the reports.
When the update was done, the connection to SQL Server failed, and the newly appointed IT person responsible for SQL does not know how to resolve the problem. Up until yesterday I was getting a message that said that the connection has failed and then today I have the following message (she has been trying very hard to get it working):
An error occurred during local report processing.
An error has occurred during report processing.
Query execution failed for dataset 'Division'.
The SELECT permission was denied on the object 'Dim1', database 'payglobal', schema 'dbo'.
The reports that were deployed to the server prior to the update are still accessible however I am unable to review any reports I edit within the Development Studio. It has been out of action now for nearly two weeks.
Could someone please give me very detailed instructions on where the IT person should look, and what she should do to fix the problem. I will then pass these onto her.
Thanks.

I recently moved my web app off of my development machine which hosted the db. Now the db is hosted on a SQL 2005 server and when i try to use the web app there is something wrong with the connection string i get a login failure. there was an account created on the domain called bookservice the domain name is thc. this user was given dbowner privlidges to the BookSchedule db on the CORESQLDEV01 server. I'm having a big problem with a SQL 2K5 cluster (using standard edition). I can get onto the box and connect to the sql server locally fine. However when I try to connect remotely I get errors.
Let's call the two sides of the cluster, CL1 and CL2 and the "virtual server" is CL3. Locally I can connect without any problem at all to the SQL server, but I just can't connect to it from any remote machine.
The server in question is instance name LMS_PRD running on CL3, port 10051. TCP/IP is definitely enabled for local and remote connections (I have checked this in the SQL server surface area configuration). I can connect locally without any problem. Also, locally, if I do,
telnet CL3 10051
it connects fine
From a SQL 2000 box - when I try to connect from sql query analyzer, I get
"Unable to connect to server LMS_PRD Server Msg 17 ... SQL server does not exist or access denied"
Client network utility shows server alias - LMS_PRD, TCP/IP, CL3LMS_PRD,10051
[I can connect to other SQL 2005 servers OK from this same server using this same method]
On this box, when I do telnet CL3 10051 , I get "Connecting to CL3...Could not open a connection to host on port 10051 : Connect failed"
[When I do a similar one for another SQL 2005 box, "telnet U01 10051", it connects fine]
From another SQL 2005 box - when I try to register the server, I get
"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP provider, error 0 - No connection could be made because thew target machine actively refused it.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 10061)"
IN the SQL native client configuration it shows alias name - CL3LMS_PRD, server=CL3LMS_PRD, protocol tcp, parameters 10051
Again if I do telnet CL3 10051, I get the error above.
From this same box I can register another SQL 2005 server without any problem and do the telnet to it OK
Just to emphasise:
(a) The SQL server configuration manager shows that TCP/IP is enabled, and that 10051 is the port (in IPALL, TCP port). Also I have checked the SQL server errorlog - it is definitely using 10051 as the port.
(b) The SQL server surface area configuration shows under local and remote connections using both TCP/IP and named pipes selected (I've tried both this and the using tcp/ip only option)
(c) SQL server browser is running
(d) There are NO firewalls etc involved
Any help or advice MUCH appreciated
Any thoughts anyone?
