ODBC - System DSN Window Is Blank
Apr 21, 2004
We've run into a few XP machines in our organization that have some interesting quirk going on. We have several ODBC connections configured on the machines. However, when you go to ODBC connections, then click on the System DSN tab, it's empty. If we try to manually create a "missing" odbc, it says it already exists, do you want to overwrite, etc. We say yes, but it still doesn't appear. The main program being used has a dropdown box at the login screen that shows the various ODBC names to choose from. The ones from the System DSN tab (which is blank anyway) are not listed. However, if you manually type in the name of the ODBC that is supposedly configured but doesn't show up, it works. So, it sees the ODBC, but it won't display it to the human eye in the settings or drop down lists. What's up with that? We've tried reinstalling MDAC, java, windows updates, etc, etc. Only some machines are affected. I am unable to tell you what's been done to all these machines. The users are all set as admins on their machines. They all run similar software, etc. The only thing that happened around the time we started noticing this is that we added a couple new ODBCs and changed the settings in an existing one. We sent an exe to all users in the organization that auto configures these ODBC's so we don't have to do it manually. It works awesome, but I don't see how that exe could have caused this problem especially when the problem seems to have only shown up on about 1% of the PCs it was applied to.

I am trying to open reports through an existing application. When I click the button to run the report, the new window opens, appears to be trying to load (the windows logo in the top corner is flowing, the hourglass is present), and then stops. I am left with a blank window, no report, and no error message.
I am able to view and run the reports through the Report Server. Other users are able to run the reports through the application.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Michelle

I have created a few reports and linked them to a URL on a web page. (sample link is : http://servername/ReportServer/Pages/ReportViewer.aspx?%2fMy_Reports%2fBacklog+Report&rs:Command=Render )
When the user clicks on the link above it renders correctly but when the user tries to export the report to any format on the list, it launches another window with the following URL : http://servername/ReportServer/Reserved.ReportViewerWebControl.axd?ExecutionID=czq4c355dmsxdy55dif1nm55&ControlID=ad74d68e-2a9c-430f-8655-dd0e6c46f831&Culture=1033&UICulture=9&ReportStack=1&OpType=Export&FileName=Backlog+Report&ContentDisposition=OnlyHtmlInline&Format=EXCEL
which then prompts the user to Open or Save the report.
How do I stop this window from opening ? or how can I make it close automatically ?
Please advise.
I know if I can change the ContentDisposition somehow to AlwaysInline then this extra window will not show during the export but it keeps defaulting to OnlyHTMLInline for ContentDisposition.
Thanks in advance.

I am running SQL 2005 SP1 on Win 2003 Std x64 SP2. I get an error trying to connect using an ODBC System DSN connection. The ODBC connection gets the following error:
Connection failed:
SQLState:'28000'
SQL Server Error: 18456
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'sa'
The SQL Server logs the following error:
18456, Severity: 14, State: 8.
I have tried this with several SQL accounts. I am able to login to the SQL Manager with the accounts without issue. It is only when trying to connect via ODBC that I get the error. I am currently downloading SQL 2005 SP2 to see if this will help with the issue. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Hello,
I have created an SSIS package to retrieve data from a Lotus Notes database using the NotesSQL 3.02g ODBC driver.
In SSIS design mode, I can connect to the Notes datasource using the following connection string without any validation errors.
uid=UserID;Dsn=LN_Costs;
I have tried other variations of the connection string including every possible connection string parameter available to the driver as follows.
server=Server_Name;uid=UserID;Dsn=DSN_Name;Driver={Lotus NotesSQL Driver (*.nsf)};database=costing/productcost.nsf;username=UserID;encryptpwd=encrypted_password;maxsubquery=20;maxstmtlen=4096;maxrels=20;maxvarcharlen=254;keeptempidx=1;maxlongvarcharlen=512;showimplicitflds=0;mapspecialchars=1;threadtimeout=60;
Using the above connection strings in SSIS design mode, the datasource test succeeds, and an sql select statement in a datasource reader returns the table structure with no error.
However, when I try to run the package, I receive the following error.
SSIS package "Sales Data Load.dtsx" starting.
Information: 0x4004300A at Data Flow Task, DTS.Pipeline: Validation phase is beginning.

Error: 0xC0024107 at Data Flow Task: There were errors during task validation.
SSIS package "Sales Data Load.dtsx" finished: Failure.
Furthermore, I have packages configured in SQL 2000 DTS to use the same system dsn without any errors.
Why doesn't this work in SQL 2005 SSIS?
Thanks.

I am uploading a text file to a MS SQL 2000 database using an ODBC driver. Here is the code:
<code>
FileUpload1.SaveAs(fpath + "" + fn)
litStep1.Visible = TrueDim FieldCount As Int16
Dim FileType As Int16Dim cmd As SqlCommand
Dim dr As SqlDataReaderDim conn2 As OdbcConnection
Dim dr2 As OdbcDataReader
Dim cmd2 As OdbcCommand
conn2 = New OdbcConnection("Driver={Microsoft Text Driver (*.txt; *.csv)};Dbq=" + fpath + ";Extended Properties='text;HDR=YES;FMT=Delimited'")
conn2.ConnectionTimeout = 200
cmd2 = New OdbcCommand("Select top 5 * from [" + fn + "] ", conn2)
cmd2.CommandType = CommandType.Text
cmd2.CommandTimeout = 300
conn2.Open()
dr2 = cmd2.ExecuteReader()
FieldCount = dr2.FieldCount
conn2.Close()
</code>
Before when this happened a reboot of the sql server resolved the problem. That's not working this time and it's certainly not a practical solution.
Any suggestions?

In Windows Server 2003 SP1 (x86) with Sql Server 2000 I could use the following connectionstring no problem
DSN=Hello;
Now I am using Windows Server 2003 x64 and SQL 2005 and I get this error:
Provider is not specified and there is no designated default provider.
If i try Provider=MSDASQL;DSN=Hello; i get
Provider cannot be found. It may not be properly installed.
for DSNless this works fine:
Provider=sqloledb;driver={sql server};server=(local);database=Hello;uid=sa;pwd=p wd;
but i am forced to use DSN as it is in a closed source application which uses set DSNs (the idea there being that you can change the connections how you like in ODBC)
This means that i need the ODBC provider name that will work in here: Provider=...;DSN=Hello;
and then to use whatever works in there as the "default provider" but i cannot find any information anywhere on how to do this!
please reply ASAP!

Dear members,
In MSDN, it says that it is recommended to use windows authentication to connect to SQL Server rather than use mixed authentication.
I create user deltasqluser on windows OS, and I specify in my webform ASP.NET script below :
protected System.Web.UI.WebControls.Label Label1;
private string _connString = @"data source=deltasql2000;initial catalog=northwind;integrated security=false;user id=deltasqluser";
/*
comment : I login to my windows as deltakoronx, and I want to every user (including me), connected to sql server through IIS, will be identified as deltasqluser not as user's login (impersonate)
*/
private void Page_Load(object sender, System.EventArgs e)
{
SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(_connString);
SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand();
cmd.Connection = conn;
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text;
cmd.CommandText = "select suser_sname()";
conn.Open();
string userName = cmd.ExecuteScalar() as string;
conn.Close();
conn.Close();
Label1.Text = userName;
}
at web.config, I add :
<identity impersonate="false" userName="deltasqluser" password="" />
at IIS webApplication1's properties, tab "Directory Security", at "Authentication and access control" section, I checked "enable anonymous access" with user : DELTAIUSR_DELTA and checked "Integrated Windows Authentication",
at query analyzer, I login as "sa" and execute script below :
exec sp_grantdbaccess 'deltasqluser','northwind'
when I run the ASP.NET script, error at conn.Open(); with error message :
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'.
What should I do so that IIS login to SQL Server as user deltasqluser not as "NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE" ?

Koronx

I have created a windows library control that accesses a local sql database
I tried the following strings for connecting
Dim connectionString As String = "Data Source=localhostSQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=TimeSheet;Trusted_Connection = true"
Dim connectionString As String = "Data Source=localhostSQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=TimeSheet;Integrated Security=SSPI"
I am not running the webpage in a virtual directory but in
C:Inetpubwwwrootusercontrol
and I have a simple index.html that tries to read from an sql db but throws
the error
System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlClientPermission, System.Data, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.

at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnectionFactory.PermissionDemand(DbConnection outerConnection)

etc etc
The action that failed was:
Demand
The type of the first permission that failed was:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlClientPermission
The Zone of the assembly that failed was:
Trusted
I looked into the .net config utility but it says unrestricted and I tried adding it to the trusted internet zones in ie options security
I think that a windows form connecting to a sql database running in a webpage should be simple
to configure what am I missing?

And i installed my client odbc drivers(32,64 bit) and created ODBC system DSNs in my local system and when i open ssis 2014 and i can able to see both the ODBC system DSNS(32,64) connections from SSIS ODBC connection.
I am using below version of .net framework in my local system which was installed in windows 7 and i have SSIS 2012 also installed in my system and i can able to see both ODBC connections using 2012 as well in my local system.

Hi,
I am using VB.NET 2005 and set up an ODBC connection via ODBC.ODBCConnection to a MDB database. Therefor, I use the "Microsoft Access ODBC Driver (*.mdb)".
When I set up a ODBCCommand like "ALTER DATABASE..." or "CREATE TABLE..." and issue it with the com.ExecuteNonQuery() command, I get an error from ODBC driver, that a SQL statement has to begin with SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE or DELETE.
How can I use DDL statements via ODBC?
I would appreciate if you could help me to use ODBC for that - no OLE, no ADO.
Thanks for help!

Stefan D.

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2. I have installed the SQL Native Client for

SQL Native Client to not show up in the list of available ODBC data sources?

When using the Microsoft ODBCfor Oracle Driver in my ODBC source I have inconsistent behavior.Sometimes my queries are processed properly, then other times I get thefollowing errorOLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "ODBCBEAST" returnedmessage "[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttrfailed".OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "ODBCBEAST" returnedmessage "[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttrfailed".OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "ODBCBEAST" returnedmessage "[Microsoft][ODBC driver for Oracle][Oracle]".Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 1Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "MSDASQL"for linked server "ODBCBEAST".I have no idea why sometimes I can connect to the linked server with noproblems andwhy other times it performs like this. I'm not changing anything aboutthe system I can think of. When I use an Oracle client (PL/SQL) I haveabsolutely no problems connecting. TNSPING returns that the connectionis good.This is unacceptable so I decided to try my luck with the Oracle 10gODBC driver. However when I use this and perform an openquery selectagainst the linked server I get back only 11 rows, when I know that thedatabase has over 100 rows (in fact when using the Microsoft ODBCdriver and it works that's what I get). I figured maybe the buffersetting needed to be raised in the ODBC configuration so I took it from64000 to 600000 (a magnitude of 10) but I still get back only 11 rows.I'm at my wit's end.Any suggestions on resolving one or the other problem would be muchappreciated.Thanks much

Ok guys, I am trying to install Sql server 2005 on Vista but I am still stuck with this warning message in the System Configuration Check during Sql server 2K5 installation :
SQL Server Edition Operating System Compatibility (Warning)
Messages
* SQL Server Edition Operating System Compatibility
* Some components of this edition of SQL Server are not supported on this operating system. For details, see 'Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server 2005' in Microsoft SQL Server Books Online.
Now, I know I need to install SP2 but how the hell I am going to install SP2 if Sql server 2005 doesn't install any of the components including Sql server Database services, Analysus services, Reporting integration services( only the workstation component is available for installation)?
Any work around for this issue?
P.S.: I didn't install VS.NET 2005 yet, can this solve the problem?
Thanks.

Found a similar problem in a different thread, but couldn't find any solution. I was wondering if there is an open case for this issue?

Hi,I have a few things on my databases which seem to be neither true systemobjects or user objects - notably a table called 'dtproperties' (createdby Enterprise manager as I understand, relating to relationship graphingor something) and some stored procs begining with "dt_" (some kind ofsource control stuff, possible visual studio related). These show up whenI use"exec sp_help 'databaseName'"but not in Ent. Mgr. or in Query Analyzer's object browser, and also notin a third party tool I use called AdeptSQL. I am wondering how thosetools know to differentiate between these types of quasi-system objects,and my real user data. (This is for the purpose of a customized schemagenerator I am writing). I'd prefer to determine this info with systemstored procs (ie sp_help, sp_helptex, sp_...etc) but will dip into thesystem tables if needed.Thanks,Dave

Hi,
Please help share with me if you know the version compatibility matrix of Ms SQL Server, ODBC driver (sqlsrv32.dll), Driver Manager (odbc32.dll) and ODBC API spec. For instance, how can I know Ms SQL Server 2000 can work with which version of sqlsrv32.dll, a particular version of sqlsrv32.dll can work with which version of odbc32.dll and a certain version of sqlsrv32.dll/odbc32.dll conforms to which version of ODBC API spec (e.g. 3.5).
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
vtluu.

made my first web application using vb script. I am trying to use window authentication for my web page and try to give all permission based on window domain user account. Here is the connecting string I was using to connect to the sql server and it was working fine.
Protected Const sql_connection_string As String = _
"workstation id= DATA-02;" & _
"packet size=4096;" & _
"user id=ASP;" & _
"password=ASP;" & _
"data source=ARENS-DATA-01;" & _
"persist security info=True;" & _
"initial catalog=SupplierTrack;"
I made couple of changes so it run on based on window domain user.
1) my server is set on window and sql server
2) Web.config file – I set Authentication mode = “ Window
3) I also added under set <authorization>
<deny users="?" />
</authorization>
4) change the connecting string to : ( Added "Integrated Security=True;" and removed line for user and password)
Protected Const sql_connection_string As String = _
"workstation id= DATA-02;" & _
"packet size=4096;" & _
"Integrated Security=True;" & _
"data source=ARENS-DATA-01;" & _
"persist security info=True;" & _
"initial catalog=SupplierTrack;"
5) run the application and now I am getting error said “Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
I was expecting window pop up log in to enter domain user and password and then verity the user and password against sql server and the take it from there. Where I made mistake. Need help.

Hello Guys,
One of the fields in my report is a web address (i.e. http://www.yahoo.com). Navigation property for this field is "Jump to URL". Users will access the report with a browser, using a "sharepoint-like" application. Default behavior of "Jump to URL" seems to be to open the link in the same window (or tab in IE7). Is there a way to force the link to be open in the new window?? Please let me know if you have any suggestions. Thanks!!
