Using SQL Server 2005 Server Management Studio, I attempted to back up a database, and received this error:
Backup failed: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: Backup and file manipulation operations (such as ALTER DATABASE ADD FILE) on a database must be serialized. Reissue the satement after the current backup or file manipulation is completed (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
Program location:

at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.SqlManagerUI.BackupPropOptions.OnRunNow(Object sender)
Backup Options were set to:

Overwrite all existing backup sets
I am fairly new to SQL 2005. Can someone help me get past this issue? What other information do I need to provide?

Hi,
This is my first posting and actually I have big problem which I need to resolve immediately:
I have a 38 GB Database on my SQL Server which I want to full-backup. Until now backup was created on the same volume where the database resides. But now the volume is out of disk space. So what we did is that we connected an external USB disk drive with 500 GB to the SQL Server and try to backup there.
But our first and all consecutive backup attemps failed with error SQL-DMO (ODBC SQLState: 42000). It's working fine the first few minutes as we can see that the backup file is continously growing. But then it abruptly aborts with above error message.
Can anyone figure out why ? Any help is appreciated.
Thx

Hi Everyone,
First of all I don't know whether this is the right place to put my query............please guide me the right link if this is not......
I am using Sybase Server in my .net project.............
and using this connectionstring...
Driver={INTERSOLV 3.11 32-BIT Sybase};Srvr=MySybase;db=MyDatabase;Uid=admin;Pwd=admin
I can make odbc connection (in .net code) using this connectionstring.............. and fetch the data also....
But somehow I don't know why... it gives the wrong result for my stored procedure.....
stored procedure is quite big and has many statements.......... after some digging I found that it gives the correct result if we use Server Explorer like Sql server, DBArtesian etc.. (not possible to copy it here, but it gives wrong result in date calculation)
But in Visual Studio Server Explorer when I make new connection and select "Microsoft OLEDB Provider for the odbc" and put the above connection string...it gives the correct result for the tables but wrong result for the stored procedure...
I feel that there is some problem with Provider....
I am not passing any provider here so it takes MSDASQL.1...
My question is What should be my connection string here..........????
and what's provider does actually???
Thanks in Adavance......

I apologize if this is not the correct forum for this posting. Looking at the descriptions, it appeared to be the best choice.
I am running Windows XP Pro SP2. I have installed the SQL Native Client for
XP. However, when I try to add a new data source through ODBC Connection
Manager, SQL Native Client is not listed as an option. I have followed this procedure on three other systems with no problems. What would be causing the
SQL Native Client to not show up in the list of available ODBC data sources?

This has been a funny week. things that were running just fine till last week (and for the last many months) have started giving problems despite that I have not changed any settings.
The problem is that one of my scheduled jobs has started failing. The job used to simply takle a backup of a database. When I tried to probe into it and tried to manually take the backup (via Enterprise Manager..) I get a dialog box with the message:
Cannot open backup device 'D:BackupSales'. Device error or device off-line.See the SQL server error log for more details.
Backup database is terminating abnormally.
Can someone kindly guide me how to solve this.
Many TIA.

BACKUP DATABASE successfully processed 419 pages in 0.754 seconds (4.543 MB/sec).
I have included the <localmachine>ASPNET user in my database with
schema 'dbo' and 'db_owner' permission. I have also change the security directives of the folder where the backup is going to be saved (write permission,creation,etc..) but it doesn´t work.
It seems as if the ASPNET user have not enough permissions to do the backup operation
Any Idea??

Hi!
We are trying to queue a xml serialized object to a servive broker queue on a conversation.
The object is a simple .net c# class with few properties mostly string, which we serialize for queing and de/serialize after de-queing. Everything works as expected. Except that when the object contains language characters such as Æ Å Ø, the SEND ON CONVERSATION seems to fail. We are using UTF-8 encoding.
Below is part of the code.
public override bool QueueMessage(EmailMessage message)
{
if (message != null)
{
string xml = "";
using (MemoryStream stream = new MemoryStream())
{
System.Xml.Serialization.XmlSerializer x = new System.Xml.Serialization.XmlSerializer(message.GetType());
x.Serialize(stream, message);
xml = ConvertByteArrayToString(stream.ToArray());
}
string sql =
string.Format (@"DECLARE @dialog_handle UNIQUEIDENTIFIER;
BEGIN DIALOG CONVERSATION @dialog_handle
FROM SERVICE [MAINPostingService]
TO SERVICE 'MAINService'
ON CONTRACT [MAINContract] ;
SEND ON CONVERSATION @dialog_handle
MESSAGE TYPE [MAINMessageType]
('{0}') ;
End Conversation @dialog_handle
With cleanup", xml);
string connectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["MessagingSystemConnectionString2005"].ConnectionString;
SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(connectionString);
SqlCommand cmd = null;
try
{
conn.Open();
cmd = conn.CreateCommand();
cmd.CommandText = sql;
cmd.Transaction = conn.BeginTransaction();
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
cmd.Transaction.Commit();
conn.Close();
return true;
}
.
.
}
}

I didn't work with XML before and so I'm posting this question on how we can generate serialized XML. I have the following table -
DECLARE @Population TABLE (CountryId INT IDENTITY(1,1), CountryName VARCHAR(15), StateName VARCHAR(20), PopulationCount INT)
INSERT INTO @Population (CountryName, StateName, PopulationCount)
VALUES ('USA','California',300000),
('USA','Chicago',500000),
('Australia','Queensland',550000),
[Code] ....
Please note that I can have another country with 10 states or 30 states, so State Name is dynamic. Can this be done in SQL ? or we have to use .NET ?

Hello,
My network team accidentally deleted and had to recreate the WNS database on the network, which posed all sorts of problems for us. Most everything is corrected, however I get the following error message in the failure of the database backup maintenance plan:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The job failed. Unable to determine if the owner (ANCONYCOgnos) of job DB Backup Job for DB Maintenance Plan '6pm Nightly Production Backup' has server access (reason: Could not obtain information about Windows NT group/user 'ANCONYCOgnos'. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 8198)).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I tried even adding this user into SQL Sever with full rights and it still did not work. It worked fine before hundreds of times, and like I said only stopped working when my network team did some thing on WNS.
Does anyone know what may be causing this. Is there something that they may have to add back to the network?
Any help or direction for additional research is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi there
I'm getting this message on my third automated backup of the transaction logs of the day. Both databases are in full recovery mode, both successfully backed up at 01.00. The transaction logs backed up perfectly happily at 01:30 and 05:30, but failed at 09:30.
The only difference between 05:30 and 09:30's backups is that the log files were shrunk at 08:15 (the databases in question are the ones that sit under ILM2007, and keeping the log files small keeps the system running better).
Is it possible that shrinking the log files causes the database to think that there hasn't been a full database backup?
Thanks
Jane

Error: 18210, Severity: 16, State: 1.
'\fnfssql3SQLBackupsMNSQL05<database>.BAK'. Operating system error 64(The specified network name is no longer available.).
BACKUP failed to complete the command BACKUP DATABASE <database>. Check the backup application log for detailed messages.
There are 5 databases on this server all backed up by the same job and 3 of them wortk fine and 2 of them fail so it is not a permissions problem. Have there been any problems with backing up to a network drive in 2005?

The following (VB.Net) code causes exceptions at seemingly random times.
Any suggestions?
Not sure if the problem is in .Net's ODBC support or in Sql Native Client.
If MARS is off, usually after less than 100 loops:
Code Snippet
System.Data.Odbc.OdbcException was unhandled
ErrorCode=-2146232009
Message="ERROR [HY000] [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Connection is busy with results for another command"
Source="SQLNCLI.DLL"
Turning MARS is on bypasses that error, so it will sometimes survive a thousand or so runs before hitting:

End While
End Sub
End Module
Usually the ".Update" triggers the exception, but sometimes the other sql commands do it.
Have tried various experiments with disposing of objects immediately when finished, but no effect.
Opening and closing the connection each loop seems to delay the errors, but it still happens eventually.

When our administrators login on the workstation the application works well. But when ordinary users login they get the following error. (We only have 1 domain)
SQLState: 28000
SQL Server Error: 18452
Login failed for user ". The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
Then the standard SQL Server Login window pops up asking for the Login ID and Password. On the window the 'Use Trusted Connection' is checked and the name of the user on the workstation appears on the LoginID. What we do is uncheck the 'Use Trusted Connection' then login using the credentials above.

We take a full backup in the early morning and hourly transaction log back during the working hours for one database in the production server. The application team made certain changes to the design of the said database in their development server. The backup from the development server was restored to the production server during working hours. After the restoration should we take a full backup before next transactional logbackup? Would the transactional log backup with out a full backup after the restoration of a database be valid?

Hello,
I have MS SQL 2005 server with 300+ databases on it. The application is set up that way that it creates a new database as needed (dynamically). Do not ask me why - I hate this design... So, it can create 3-4 databases a day (random time).
I've scheduled full backup of all databases to run once at night, and it runs just fine. Besides that, I have scheduled tran logs backup of all databases to run every hour. This backup fails from time to time with the following error:
Executing the query "BACKUP LOG [survey_p0886464_test] TO DISK = N'D:\backups\log backups\survey_p0886464_test_backup_200708072300.trn' WITH NOFORMAT, NOINIT, NAME = N'survey_p0886464_test_backup_20070807230002', SKIP, REWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10
" failed with the following error: "BACKUP LOG cannot be performed because there is no current database backup.
BACKUP LOG is terminating abnormally.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.
So, I think what happens is since my full backup of all databases are scheduled to run only once at night, and tran logs every hour, when new database is created during the day, there is no full backup for it, that is why tran logs backup fails. Becuase after the failure, if I run full backup again, then tran log runs just fine afterwards.
I am new to MS SQL Server, I am mostly working with Sybase IQ. Do you know if I can "trigger" full backup every time when new database created to avoid tran lof failure?
Or is it possible to schedule full backup to run if tran log backup fails?
Any advice will be much appreciated.
