Does anyone know the best way to set up filters against the Cube data.
Ex. The Cube was built with data for 1998,1999, 2000.
The totals and the rollups will include the value for all years.
Client A want to access the Cube Data through Excel 2000 but only wants to see the values for 1999 - with the correct totals and rollups...
I know you can uncheck the other years in the filters in excel, but the totals and rollups will still include the values summing for all years.
I'm looking into adding OLAP Cubes as part of our software to be distributed with our OLTP and eventually OLAP databases. Is there any books that deal with distributing OLAP Cubes and or security. Our clients will have SQL Server with our databases. Thanks
I cannot seem to find a group where this question would fit so I amposting it here. I have what I believe is a unique situation. I amusing SQL Server Analysis Server to build a cube of "snapshot"month-end type of data. This data is from an instance of MicrosoftNavision and I have successfully used SQL-DMO and DTSPackage Libraryobjects to allow the user to rebuild the cube through Navision. Thisis accounting data and as such, the accountants want to be able toarchive this data by month. I know through Analysis Server Managerinterface I can copy the cube and save it to a different name.I would like to know if there is a way to programmatically save a cubeto a different name with some type of automation object? Thanks
While creating a model, i can access to relational tables as data source, but not to olap cubes. Is it possible to browse olap cubes for mining? If yes, how? Thanks...
How can we allow users to access a MS SQL Server OLAP cube but restrict the level of data that he might see? I mean, if there is a cube with data for three different countries. How can one user be restricted to see data pertaining to only one of the countries and not the other two countries?
Can someone tell me how you can automate the refresh of OLAP Cubes? I just inhereted a data warehouse running on SQL7 and the idea of having to go in and manually refresh the cubes everyday is, well... stupid. I can't believe that they've been doing this for a year. Unfortunately, I'm not familar enough with MSOLAP yet and I can't figure this out. Any tips?
i want to know whether it is possible to develop ADHOC reports using SSRS 2005 and OLAP Cubes. the requirement is the user should be able to select the columns he wants to see in the report.
I think this requires Dynamic RDL generation. It is very urgent. i have to give POC to the client on this. Any help in this regad is appreciated.
I am having a question on the SSAS2005 OLAP Cubes storage modes. We know SSAS2005 supports 3 different storage modes: ROLAP, MOLAP, HOLAP.
Do all these three storage modes of cubes store data in another physica analysis services databases which are inrelative from their data warehouse (in case they are built on top of the data warehouse)? (so it does not matter at all even we remove the data warehouse?)
Thank you very much in advance for your help and I am looking forward to hearing from you shortly.
On the subject of Data Warehouses, Data Cubes & OLAP….I would like to speak frankly about Data Warehouses, Data Cubes andOLAP (on-line analytical processing). Has it dawned on anyone elsethat these buzz words were created by some geek who decided to take astab at marketing? Knowing that to the backwoods manager who knowslittle of technology that new innovative names for old concepts wouldhelp to sale their products.I mean seriously, what is the story here? In a nut shell, and pleasestop me if you disagree, but isn’t a data warehouse simply adatabase? Can’t you do everything on a conventional databaselike SQL Server, Oracle or DB2 that you can do on these newproprietary Data Warehouse constructs? I mean who are they trying tofool?Take a look, for instance, at Data Cubes. Who hasn’t noticedthe striking similarity between data cubes and views used in all themore robust databases? Also, what about OLAP? OLAP is nothing morethan a report generator. There’s nothing you can do with thesemillion dollar price tagged Data Warehouse total solution packagesthat I can’t do with SQL Server, Oracle or DB2…for thatmatter Microsoft Access. As an example some sales people for Metadata Corporation has the VicePresident of I.T. in Nashville, for Healthspring, sold on their totalsolution data respository which is such a scam. All they had to dowas throw a couple of buzzwords at him and they have him hypnotized.Personally, I feel that these kinds of marketing practices undermineour industry. It helps to unravel what little standards orconsistency we have. What do you guys think?Stuart
I'm am writing a report in SSRS 2005 on a local PC that uses cubes in AS 2000 on another server as a datasource. I am using the Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services Extension (OLAP9) to connect to the cubes using windows authentication. I can save and preview the report in visual studio and publish the reports on IIS on my local PC with no problems but when I go to view the report in IE, I get the following error:
An error has occurred during report processing. Query execution failed for data set 'dataset'. Unable to recognize the requested property ID 'ReturnCellProperties'.
Have read various articles on the net with no conclusive explanation.
I have seen another post on this forum that suggests using OLEDB for Analysis Services instead but if I do this it doesn't allow me to use the MDX visual query designer. Creating the report using OLAP9 then changing to OLEDB and pasting in the query code doesn't work so well either.
I went and read http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms159219.aspx about data sources supported by SSRS 2005 and it should be ok.
I am using sql server 2005 with the latest service pack 2.
I want to connect MS SQL 2000 Server with Crystal Analysis via OLAP.
I have installed SQL with Windows authentication mode and installed crystal Analysis 9.0
I have configured Crystal OLAP connection setup.
When I am trying to open or create new application through CA I am not getting through OLAP connection with SQL and I am receiving the error as the following.
Error 1
" Unknown User name and bad password."
Error 2
Failes to initialize.( Cannot connect to the server 'XXXX." the server is not started or too busy)
I recently wrote a white paper on OLAP and was having a hard time finding any information about what was new in SQL Server 2000 OLAP on the web. I didn't really find much until I downloaded a trial copy of SQL Server 2000 (which didn't have OLAP, but had links to information on it). We use Hyperion Essbase, and I was wondering if Microsoft OLAP 2000 would be a viable competitor.
Can a SSIS server, i.e. staging server be used to create packages that update SQL Server 2000 Analysis services objects on another server running SQL server 2000 OLAP?
It appears that the OLAP connection manager ion SSIS supports only connections (and thus updates) to 2005 OLAP objects. I work for a company that has a huge investment in a 3rd party DW that uses Analysis Services 2000. the DW tool vendor will not support an upgrade to SSAS 2005. We wish to extend the DW from other data sources. My thought was to use a staging server with SSIS, used solely as the ETL tool for all new development (thus no more DTS development), and to update the sql server 2000 operational data store on another box.
I can find no documentation on how to process sql server 2000 analysis services objects from within an SSIS package. Any ideas?
Our OLAP environment involves an ETL/Data Warehouse/Data Mart server and a cube publisher server. We would like to learn how to automate the Archival/Restore of OLAP databases. We are currently doing it manually though OLAP Manager. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. James.

I have some questions about SQL Servers 2000 and 2005 compatibility. In my configuration I have to use both servers. The cubes are stocked in 2005 server. May I transfer from 2005 to 2000 Analysis Services the cubes?
If yes, what is the procedure? The result of migration is the same in the two different versions?
I'm using SSAS 2005 with Excel 2007. My data store is very poor at the moment and most of the tables for the dimensions get rebuilt every night. The current result is as follows;
User selects product "Issue May 2008" as a filter from the product dimension, saves and closes the report. User opens the report after the data has refreshed, the data is different, the filter shows Issue May 2008 but when you click on it the item above it is displayed - this is because the IDs have changed in the source table.
Is there a way to make it so the text/description of the dimension is used rather than the ID?
In my head that explanation makes sense, but I can understand how it might not so please let me know if it doesn't
I was wondering if it's possible to set filters per user. For example we have a client who has offices in 10 different states, we want an admin of an office to only be able to run reports on their state. Is this possible without creating 10 different models/views?
Is there a good article on the net for working with filters?
Also, I have a report with 10 parameters. Each parameter get his default values from a dataset. The problem is that the report ake a lot of time to load since it need to run all 10 datasets to load the parameters values.
I am creating report using reporting service and datasource is SQL Server 2005 Cube.
I am using query builder and i am creating query parameters in the query builder but when i run the report is showing the filters but data is not filtering based on which i selected from the list.
How do i create filters?? Please help out on this.
Hi. Is it possible to create a report via SSRS and deilver it via the subscription service in an email such that when user opens their own report (filtered by their user id) they can then dynamically change filters (cbo boxes) a la an excel pivot table which will then refresh the data in the report for them?
I can't seem to find a way to do this. Drill-down is not what is wanted...they want to simply cheange selections in cbo boxes and have the data all refresh.
I have a report generated through a number of recursive CETs and would like to add a FILTER parameter for the user to select on. (Using Parameters in the query will not work because recursion cannot be limited at the outset by the parameter). The values to be selectable are: Sprint 1 - R 1.0 Sprint 2 - R 1.0 Sprint 3 - R 1.0 Sprint 4 - R 2.0 Sprint 5 - R 2.0 Sprint 6 - R 2.0 ...etc
I want the report to display only those Releases (R n.0) which the user specifies, eg: Release 2 would select all data with R 2.0 in the field.
Using Table properties-Filters for the field works IF I use "=", as: Expression: Operator: Value: An.... =Fields!SprintName.Value = Sprint 4 - R 2.0 or =Fields!SprintName.Value = Sprint 5 - R 2.0 or =Fields!SprintName.Value = Sprint 6 - R 2.0
Issues: 1. I am unable to use Like (I could specify Like '%- R 2.0%' and have all Release 2.0 displayed), but it does not work with any of the syntax I have tried. Using only a single expression row, - R 2.0, '%- R 2.0%', "%- R 2.0%" all fail by displaying NO data. CAN Like be used? And what is the syntax?
2. I do not have any control over the And/Or column -- it is always greyed-out, and inserts "or" automatically if the Operation is "=", and "and" if the operation is "Like". How do I control this paramter?
3. And, most important, how do I get user input to the filter field, such that If I enter Release 2 from a drop down (?), I can display the appropirate data?
I am using Merge Replication between SQL Server 2005 (Publisher) and Pocket PC (Subscriber). I have a .NET compact framework appliction on the Pocket PC that replicates data from the server.
I am using SqlCeReplication class on the Pocket PC application to synchronise the data. By default, when i call the Syncrhonise() method, it pulls all the data from the server. What I want is to pass a parameter from the Pocket PC and filter the data based on that paramter. E.g. from the Employee table, I want only those Employee that belongs to a CompanyID that I pass as a parameter.
Is there a way to do this, so that i can pass parameters from my PDA application (Windows Mobile), and make the Filters specified in the Publication to use that parameter to filter out the rows.
Hi, Is there a way to create a new mining model from an existing one but with a different filter? I can see that the SELECT INTO DMX statement perform the creation. Is there a syntax for DMX in SQL Server 2008 for setting the filter for the new model?
Does anyone know if you can use any other parameters in the row filters for merge replication besides the functions SUSER_NAME() and HOST_NAME()?
I would like to create a publication for a couple thousand mobile databases to replicate with one SQL Database but filter what data they get based on some parameters. Do I have to hard code WHERE statements into static filters and create a publication for every user (seems a little ridiculous)?
Is there a proper way to do this using the SUSER_NAME and give each user a different connection name that will filter data properly?
