OLE DB Connection + SET NOCOUNT ON Problem

Mar 20, 2008

What I am Trying To Achieve
I am trying to get the ID of the row I am inserting - using code that works fine on: SQL Server 2000 with an ODBC connection and SQL Server 2005 with an ODBC connection

Problem
When the code is executed it inserts the row 4 times.

My Settings
I have the following OLE DB connection string:-
Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;User ID=myuserid;Initial Catalog=dbname;Data Source=dbserveraddress;User Id=myuserid;PASSWORD=mypassword;

and I am executing the following SQL:-
session("sessionID") = dbExecuteRS("SET NOCOUNT ON;INSERT INTO myTable (ipAddress) VALUES('"& request.serverVariables("REMOTE_HOST") &"');SELECT SCOPE_IDENTITY();SET NOCOUNT OFF;")(0)

dbExecuteRS = a function that executes a query

I know my asp page is only executing this sql once but the SQL Profiler says it is running multiple times.

What I've Tried So Far
1) A normal insert works fine - only inserts one row
2) The same SQL with an OLE DB connection string on SQL Server 2000 encounters the same problem - the insert sql with the set nocount on inserts 4 rows
3) I've tried using this bit of SQL/ASP which causes the same problem:-
set tmpRS = dbExecuteRS("SET NOCOUNT ON;INSERT INTO mytable (ipAddress) VALUES('"& request.serverVariables("REMOTE_HOST") &"');SELECT newID = SCOPE_IDENTITY();")
if not tmpRS.eof then
response.write("tmpRS('newID'): " & tmpRS("newID") & "<BR>")
end if
set tmpRS = nothing

Conclusion
From all of my tests I can conclude that this problem ONLY happens when we are connecting to the database via the OLE DB connection string and using an INSERT statement with SET NOCOUNT ON

All ideas/suggestions appreciated, thanks.

SET NOCOUNT ON

Aug 9, 2004

If I understood correctly from some reading SET NOCOUNT ON is use so that my sp does not return the number of row affected and this should improve greatly the performance of my sp. I should use if for all insert, delete adn update sp. Is this correct? Is there any situation I need to have it set to OFF?
What about if I only do a SELECT * FROM Table, is there any point to turn this ON?
Thanks.

Set Nocount On???

Aug 31, 2004

Hi, i have the next problem...
I work with:
- Sqlserver 2000
- Web server, Tomcat.
- JDBC.
- Java Aplication.

I notice that when I call a store procedure from the aplication java, I usually set no count on in my sp because of some exception errors in my aplication.
But I have one special version of a jdbc that it doesnt work with this parameter. I wish it could be a parameter of the database that is set by the jdbc, but i´m not sure.

Any idea?????

Thanks.

NOCOUNT Not Working? Suppress Resultset

Jan 16, 2008

I have a SP that has a cursor, and loops. Each loop executes SQL, and inserts values into a temp table on each loop. I want to just have the values in the temp table to show up in QA not the loop's sql results.

I thought:

SET NOCOUNT ON
at the begining of my proc would suppress the results, and then

SET NOCOUNT OFF
prior to my select on my temp table would do this, but the resultset of the loop still shows up in QA. It does suppress the count values on the message tab of QA, but that is it.

I tried something simple like:

SET NOCOUNT ON;
GO
SELECT * FROM [Contact]

And it still show the results in the grid

Any thoughts?
ThanksEric

How To Configure Replication Triggers To SET NOCOUNT ON?

Jul 16, 2007

Hopefully simple question:

How to configure replication so that replication triggers issue a SET NOCOUNT ON?

Also: are there any negative consequences of adding a SET NOCOUNT ON to replication triggers?

I'm not a DBA so my experience with replication is pretty much non-existent. Hopefully, there's a simple configuration option that I can apply when setting up replication for a database. If not, is it going to be feasible for me to write a script that runs over the replication triggers/procs to add this SET statement (any pointers on inbuilt procs that would help here would be real useful)?

Thanks in advance

Cannot Set Connection Property Of Backup Database Task If Connection String Is Customized In Connection Object

Aug 23, 2006

I added a connection (ADO.NET) object by name testCon in the connection manager - I wanted to programmatically supply the connection string. So I used the "Expressions" property of the connection object and set the connectionstring to one DTS variable. The idea is to supply the connection string value to the variable - so that the connection object uses my connection string.

Then I added a "Backup Database Task" to my package with the name BkpTask. Now whenever I try to set the connection property of BkpTask to the testCon connection object, by typing testCon, it automatically gets cleared. I am not able to set the connection value.

Then after spending several hours I found that this is because I have customized the connection string in testCon. If I don't customize the connection string, I am able to enter the "testCon" value in the connection property of the BkpTask.

Is this an intrinsic issue?

Failed OLEDB Connection: Cannot Aquire Connection From Connection Manager

Feb 6, 2008

I have a package that uses a for loop to iterate through an unknown amount of excel files and pull their data into a table. However, there will be cases when the file is corrupted or has some sort of problem so that either the transformation will fail or the excel data source will fail with an oledb connection error.
Could anyone suggest a clean way to trap these errors? Specifically, the "Cannot Aquire Connection from Connection Manager", which is the excel connection.

Thanks,

Connection Strings, Trusted-connection VS Username-password, SQL Server 2005 Express

Mar 9, 2007

All --
Please help.
I have some questions about connection strings.

BACKGROUND...

Note that I am using the "SQL Native Client OLE DB Provider", SQL Sever 2005 Express, ASP.NET, C#.NET, and VS.NET 2005.
Note that I do not want to use the "Attach a database file" type of connection string.
Note that I am using the site http://www.ConnectionStrings.com as a reference.
Note that this "Standard security" connection string...<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Server=MYTESTOFFICESERVERS;Database=MyDatabase;Uid=MyDatabaseUser;Pwd=MyDatabasePassword;" />...does not work and causes the following run-time error...A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.)
Note that this "Trusted connection" connection string...<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Server=MYTESTOFFICESERVERS;Database=MyDatabase;Trusted_Connection=yes;" />...works but is less-than ideal because it uses a Trusted Connection rather than a Username/Password combination.

QUESTIONS...
(A) What exactly does the error in Item 4 mean?
(B) Do 4 and 5 imply that one must use a Trusted_Connection for all SQL Server 2005 Express connection strings when the database does not reside in the web application's App_Data folder or use a "Attach a database file" type of connection string?
(C) Are there any alternatives?
(D) What do you suggest?

Please advise.
Thank you.

SQL Connection In Vista With Trusted Connection Fails Under Local System Account Until Reboot

Mar 4, 2008

Hi All,

We are using the Windows Task Scheduler as a substitute for the SQL Server Agent, which isn't available in the Express edition. The scheduled task just calls a batch file, which in turn, runs a stored procedure using osql with the -E option for a Trusted Connection.

SQL Server Express has been installed using the defaults, which means the service is running in the "NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE" account. The scheduled task we create is set to run using the "NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM" account.

Now we find that on Windows Vista (tested using Ultimate Edition) that the scheduled task fails to run the stored procedure until the machine is rebooted the first time after installing SQL Server Express. When I say "fail", I mean that the stored procedure isn't executed. The scheduled task however completes and reports no errors. On Windows XP, we do not run into this problem so I suspect it has something to do with the UAC in Vista?

We further found that after installing SQL Server Express and creating the scheduled task in the "NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE" account, the scheduled task (and stored procedure) runs fine WITHOUT requiring a reboot.

Can anyone explain why a reboot is needed to get SQL Server Express to run the scheduled task correctly under Windows Vista and the SYSTEM account?

Any help or thoughts greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I'm having a BIG problem, this is my 3rd day looking for answer !I'm trying to create a custom membership provider with MS SQL database 2005 but not the default ASPNETDB. When I started Package2, it's work. I havn't errors. But when I started Package 1 I have error "Unable to get managed connection from the Connection Manager runtime". In execution log I see that ADO.NET source produced this error on verification stage. Package failed on verification stage, not on execution stage. Why when I started Package 2 it work, but when I started Package1 (and Package1 started Package2) it failed?

Jdbc Refuses Connection With 'user Not Associated With A Trusted SQL Server Connection' Message

Jul 10, 2007

When using jdbc with IntegratedSecurity, I run into this problem when the machine is not part of a domain & gets its IP address via dhcp. Is this expected behavior or a bug in the jdbc driver.

The SQLServer and client application are installed on the same machine and a local admin is logged in, running the client app.

If I change one of the two parameters mentioned above, the connection can be established leading me to believe this may be intentional for security issues. Am I correct?

ExecuteReader Requires An Open And Available Connection. The Connection's Current State Is Closed.

Apr 26, 2007

I am accessing SQL2005 with C# code using OleDbConnection.

A try and catch block catches the following error once a while between the Open() and Close() of the connection:

ExecuteNonQuery requires an open and available Connection. The connection's current state is closed.

I do not even have any idea where to start to debug this. The ExecuteNonQuery() runs a delete SQL query. It works 99.9% of the time. I do not see anything wrong when this error happens.

Any hint would be greatly appreciated.

The AcquireConnection Method Call To The Connection Manager &&<Connection Name&&> Failed With Error Code 0xC020200

Feb 14, 2008

Hi All,
I am getting the following error if I am using the package "Transaction Option=Required" while running through Sql Job:
The AcquireConnection method call to the connection manager "<connection name>" failed with error code 0xC0202009.

while I running the SSIS package on BI environment, I am getting the following error:
[Connection manager "<connection name>"] Error: The SSIS Runtime has failed to enlist the OLE DB connection in a distributed transaction with error 0x8004D00A "Unable to enlist in the transaction.".

I know the alternative solution is to make the "Transaction Option=Supported", but in my case I have run the whole flow in a single transaction. I came to know that this has been fixed in the service pack1(ref. to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914375). FYI.. some time it was running successful.

I have taken all the necessary step to run the SSIS package in a distributed transaction(like the steps for MSDTC) and also created the package flow in a sequence.

I was going through the link - http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=160340&SiteID=1 but all those didn't solve my problem.

If anyone can help me it will be great. or it is a bug in SSIS?

Thanks.

SSPI Handshake Failed With Error Code 0x8009030c While Establishing A Connection With Integrated Security; The Connection Has Be

Mar 7, 2006

Hello, I have a sql 2005 server, and I am a developer, with the database on my own machine. It alwayws works for me but after some minutes the other developer cant work in the application

He got this error

Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. [CLIENT: 192.168.1.140]

and When I see the log event after that error, it comes with another error.

SSPI handshake failed with error code 0x8009030c while establishing a connection with integrated security; the connection has been closed. [CLIENT: 192.168.1.140]

He has IIS5 and me too.

I created a user on the domain called ASPSYS with password, then in the IIS on anonymous authentication I put that user with that password, and it works, on both machines.

and in the connection string I have.

<add key="sqlconn" value="Data Source=ESTACION15;Initial Catalog=GescomDefinitiva;Integrated Security=SSPI; Trusted_Connection=true"/>

I go to the profiler, and I see that when he browses a page, the database is accesed with user ASPSYS, but when I browse a page, the database is accesed with user SElevalencia.

Thats strange.

The only way that the other developer can work again on the project is to restart the whole machine. He has windows xp profession, I have windows 2000.

If you want me to send logs please tellme

Dropped Network Connection Breaks Connection To Local SQL Server

Apr 2, 2008

Let me set the stage of my testbed configuration: On Windows XP SP2, my default connection to the Internet is via wireless express card modem using EV-DO via Verizon Wireless. Let's call this connection A. I also have a traditional wireless network connection (802.11g) that is always enabled. Let's call this connection B. Connection A is always connected during normal business hours. Connection B is not and is often searching for a wireless network to connect to when nothing is in range.

Yesterday, connection B was continuously trying to connect to a wireless network not under my control, meaning that the connection was never established and notification messages continually popped up to complain of this fact. Over time, I've learned to ignore these messages and go on doing my daily work without much thought of the possible implications.

Then, things started to get odd. I was running our application, WebWatchBot, to perform some simple tests of various websites and servers, when I started to get messages from the application that database connectivity was lost, which is a message that pops up to inform the user that the connection is forcibly dropped by SQL Server. After a few moments, the connection to the database was re-established and the message went away. Since I was actually working with SQL Server, I thought it was an anomoly, so I continued on. Then, it happened again. And again. Then, I noticed that the "database connectivity lost" message started to coincide with the wireless connection's (connection B) inability to connect with a wireless network.

Why would this be happening? The database and application are on the same exact computer. The connection to the database is via ODBC drivers over tcp/ip, but why would connection B affect this?

Some added information that may prove useful:

Client side:

What is the connection string in you app or DSN? (please specify)
DRIVER=SQL Server;SERVER=HIGHNOTEWEBWATCHBOT;Database=WebWatchBot;UID=sa;PWD=*****

If client fails to connect, what is the client error messages? (please specify)
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Communication link failure

Is the client remote or local to the SQL server machine? [Remote | Local]

The Connection Name 'name' Was Not Found In The Applications Configuration Or The Connection String Is Empty

Jan 18, 2008

I have been trying to host my website on Go Daddy for about 3 weeks and I have cleared several problems but this one remains. I can get into the ASPNETDB database for doing logins , etc but I cant access my database called "PINEmgt".
To try to understand where the problem is located,I built a very simple application without login controls and put on it one Detailform accessing a single line table "Signin". I continually get the error message I got with my real app :"The connection name 'PINEMgtConnectionString2' was not found in the applications configuration or the connection string is empty. " There is only one connection string in my app -'PINEMgtConnectionString2'. When I run the app locally on my machine it works. After I move everything to Go Daddy, I get the error message and the following dump"

Line 24: </Fields>
Line 25: </aspetailsView>
Line 26: <aspqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStringsINEMgtConnectionString2 %>"
Line 27: InsertCommand="INSERT INTO Signup(first_name, last_name, email, customer_id) VALUES (,,,)"
Line 28: SelectCommand="SELECT * FROM [Signup]"></aspqlDataSource>

This is indeed the code from my single page app.

The dump is:

[InvalidOperationException: The connection name 'PINEMgtConnectionString2' was not found in the applications configuration or the connection string is empty.]

After Googleing, asking Go Daddy for info (which they dont give) , etc for three weeks, I need serious mental help
in the form of a solution of this problem. Your help with the problem or the name of a good mental health professional in eastern N.C. (maybe both) would be appreciated.

The Connection Name 'name' Was Not Found In The Applications Configuration Or The Connection String Is Empty

May 30, 2008

I have seen another thread with this same problem, but the problem seemed to be a typo. I am getting an error when I try to access the web site ..

The connection name 'USASH-AS0013' was not found in the applications configuration or the connection string is empty.

However, in my web.config file I do have a connection named USASH-AS0013. Here is my web.config file (with my user/pwd hidden). Any help would be greatly appreciated.
