ORDER BY (field In Foreign Table)
Apr 4, 2008
Newbie question. Can someone show me an SQL statement that sorts the results of a query by a field in a different table?
CREATE TABLE `Table1`
(
`table1_id` INTEGER AUTO_INCREMENT ,
`table1_name` VARCHAR(255),
PRIMARY KEY (`table1_id`)
)
CREATE TABLE `Table2`
(
`table2_id` INTEGER AUTO_INCREMENT ,
`table2_name` VARCHAR(255),
`table2_table1` INTEGER,
PRIMARY KEY (`table2_id`)
)
ALTER TABLE `Table2` ADD FOREIGN KEY (`table2_table1`) REFERENCES `Table1`(`table1_id`);
What I'd like is something like:
SELECT * FROM Table2 ORDER BY "Table1(table2_table1).tabel1_name",table2_name
It's the section in double quotes that I can't figure out how to compose.
As an example, if Table 1 has
1, A
2, B
3, C
and Table 2 has
1, a, 2
2, b, 1
3, c, 2
then I'd like the sort to return
2, b, 1
1, a, 2
3, c, 2
TIA,
Stephen

There are two tables, parent and child table.Foreign key field of the child table is not a required field. If thedata is submitted w/o a value into the foreign key field, what shouldI make it as a default value? Should it be "null"?

I have a table called BidItem which has another table calledBidAddendum related to it by foreign key. I have another table calledBidFolder which is related to both BidItem and BidAddendum, based on acolumn called RefId and one called Type, i.e. type 1 is a relationshipto BidItem and type 2 is a relationship to BidAddendum. Is there any way to specify a foreign key that will allow for thedifferent types indicating which table the relationship should existon? Or do I have to have two separate tables with identical columns(and remove the type column) ?? I would prefer not to have multipleidentical tables.

How can I get and or set the order in which the cascading deletes of a table are executed??
I have table A with cascading deletes to Table B and Table C. Records in table B can not be deleted if they are referenced from table C. So if I delete C, then B and then A; that would work. But B then C and then A might be prohibited due to the constraint between B and C. Therefor the order of execution of the cascading delete is important.

Probably not the best "Subject Title", but no the less what I am looking for is a way to get the order in which I should insert data into a table that has 10 FK's to it. I have queries that list them out for me, but they do that in what seems to be alphabetical order. You can also right click the table in question and select view dependencies, but that as well appears to be in alphabetical order.
Is there any query or any way to see what order I should be inserting and/or deleting data into FK tables?

I never paid much attention to this before but I noticed this today in a new table I was creating.
For tables defined in the tabular model the table properties have something like SELECT Blah FROM TableName ORDER BY Blah Then in the tabular model the table's data is in the same order it was ordered by in the data source for the table.
I have a date table I setup and I noticed it is NOT respecting the sort order.
I have it sorted by DateID which sorts with the oldest date first and newest date as last row. However, the table that is imported and stored in the data model is not in that order.
I can of course manually sort the rows in BIDS/DataTools, but I find this discrepancy odd.
Would this have negative impacts on the EARLIER function for example if the data rows are not in the order specified?

I'm a total newb to SQL so I apologize if I butcher the description of what I'm looking to do :) Hopefully the example makes more sense. Is it possible for a single record in 1 table to contain relationships to several records in a different table?
What I've got so far is 2 tables - Hardware and Software, with ID Specifying primary keys HardwareID and SoftwareID respectively. the hardware records are for computer details and the software obviously are for programs. What I need to be able to do is pull up a hardware record and be able to see what software is installed on it, and vice versa pull up a software record to see which computers it's installed on. The problem I'm running into is that a computer can have multiple programs installed on it and a program can be installed on multiple computers, so I don't know how to create that relationship to account for that.
What I'd like to see is in the Hardware table a column for SoftwareID that has a foreign key relationship to the SoftwareID field in the Software Table, and vice versa....My question though is is that possible to do and have potentially multiple separate records it links to from that same column field? I might have a computer with say Windows XP Pro, Office 2003 Standard, Adobe Acrobat 8 and a proprietary rate calculator program that i need each to be displayed with their details when I open that computer's record. Or on the software side if I need to see which computers a license is already installed on then I want to make sure I can pull up the full list of computers.
And finally if what I'd like to do isn't possible as I described it...any recommendations for a better way?
Thanks all for the help!

Hello,
I have two tables (one-to-many relation) related thru a common key. I have setup the Relation using the Database Designer. The Form is populated using Drag-and-drop which automatically adds the BindingSource, TableAdapter, and Binding Navigator. The Relation works great in the change mode, and life is good.
In the Add mode the field setup with the Foreign Key is not automatically populated as it is in Change mode. The field can be updated manually, but that defeats the purpose of setting up the Relation.
Any ideas how to fix this?
I know this is difficult to visualize without seeing it.
Thank you for any ideas,
Tom

Hi!
I recently run into a senario when a procedure quiered a table without a order by clause. Luckily it retrived data in the prefered order.
The table returns the data in the same order in SQL Manager "Open Table"
So I started to wonder what deterimins the sort order when there is no order by clause ?
I researched this for a bit but found no straight answers. My table has no PK, but an identiy column.
Peace.

I ran into an interesting situation. I'm working on contract and was looking at creating an ERD for an existing database when I ran into a problem. I found FK's that are referencing columns that do not have a unique constraint or a unique index.
I don't know the history of the database but was there a time in SQL Server history where this would have been possible? I scripted out the tables and created it in a test database. When I run the script to create the FK I get the following message.
I double checked the original tables and this FK does exist in table1 and there is no unique anything in the referenced table, table2. Currently the database is running on SQL Server 2008 Ent.
ALTER TABLE [dbo].[table1] WITH CHECK ADD CONSTRAINT [FK_table1] FOREIGN KEY([Col1])
REFERENCES [dbo].[table2] ([col2])
There are no primary or candidate keys in the referenced table 'dbo.table2' that match the referencing column list in the foreign key 'FK_table1'.

I would like to order this field but only use the 0004-3-2007 part of the field to order it. Is it possible to put the last 11 charachters (0004-3-2007) in another field and then order it using this new field?

How can I "Order By" the second + third characters of a 7 char field ?
Sample data looks like:
LCA - L
LCB - L
LCF - M
LCE - M
LCE - A
LCA - A
LCB - A
If I order by the whole field I get:
LCA - A
LCA - L
LCB - A
LCB - L
LCE - A
LCE - M
LCF - L
LCF - M
What I want is:
LCA - L
LCB - L
LCF - L
LCA - A
LCB - A
LCE - A
LCE - M
LCF - M
I'm still at the stage in this project were I can 'split' the field (if I have to) into first 3 and last 1. But the sort order of the last 1 is not alphabetic (I want 'L', 'A', "M").
Can I substitute a custom SortOrder some way ? (I've done that with mainframe Cobol).
All suggestions appreciated.
Thanks
Roger

Hi,
I have small question regarding ORDER BY clause.
I wanted some value of the fields should come first before other values….Something like:
+----------+----------------------------------------+
| code | name |
+----------+----------------------------------------+
| UK | United Kingdom |
| US | United States |
| AF | Afghanistan |
| AL | Albania |
| DZ | Algeria |
| AS | American Samoa |
I want to display country UK and US code first and then rest of the countries using SQL statement. I know in MySQL, I can use ORDER BY code IN (...)
--SQL
SELECT * FROM countries ORDER by code IN ('UK', 'US') desc
But not sure how can I do same thing in SQL Server. Is there any equivalent of ORDER BY [field] IN (…) clause in SQL Server???
Though I can create a new field something like sequence and use it to display these countries but I can not do that…
Please advice.
Thanks,

Hi AllI am finding unexpected results when inserted into a newly createdtable that has a field of datatype int identity (1,1).Basically the order I sort on when inserting into the table is notreflected in the order of the values from the identity field.Have I been wrong in assuming that it should reflect the order from thesort? The code is ...create table tmp (A varchar(50), L float, C int identity(1,1))insert into tmp (A, L) select Aa, Ll from tmp1 order by Aa, Lland I don't understand why the values in tmp.C aren't in the ordersuggested by the sort.Any comments most appreciatedBevan

I want to make a query, stored procedure, or whatever which will only display the primary key where there does no exist a foreign key in linked table. For example. If I had two tables with a one to many relationship.A [Computer] has one or more [Hard Drives]. I want to select only those computers which do not have a Hard Drive(s) associated with them. That is, show all computers where the Computer_ID field in the [Hard Drives] table does not exist. This seems simple but I'm drawing a blank here.

Table1 columns are: table1Id; Name. Table2 columns include Table2.table1Id which is the foreign key to Table1.
What is the syntax to delete records from Table1 using Table1.Name='some name' and remove any records in Table2 that have Table2.table1Id equal to Table1.table1Id?

Hi Guys,
Does anyone knows what is the evaluation order for expressions attached to "Value" property and "BackgroundColor" property for a field.
My problem is if a field is being changed in its value property to a particular value, will this changed value be recognised immediately by the Backgroundcolor property during its rule evaluation, it does not seem to be the case.

Here is my issue I am new to 2005 sql server, and am trying to take my old data which is exported to a txt file and import it to tables in sql. The older database is non relational, and I had made several exports for the way I want to build my tables. I built my packages fine and everything is working until I start building relationships. I remove my foreign key and the table with the primary key will get updated for the package again. I need to update the data daily into sql, and once in it will only be update from the package until the database is moved over.
It will run and update with a primary key until I add a foreign key to another database.
Here is my error when running the package when table 2 has a foreign key.
[Execute SQL Task] Error: Executing the query "TRUNCATE TABLE [consumer].[dbo].[Client] " failed with the following error: "Cannot truncate table 'consumer.dbo.Client' because it is being referenced by a FOREIGN KEY constraint.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.

I am creating an app that allows the user to change the order of the list by changing a value in a displayOrder field. I'd love a button for move up /move down move bottom/move top and then pass that parameter to a stored procedure and it would renumber all the items in the list.
Example
ItemID description DisplayOrder Action0 item 1 0 Moveup/move down1 item 2 1 Moveup/move down2 item 3 2 Moveup/move down
So clicking on move up on item 2 would pass and itemID, Action and perhaps a list id to a stored proc and it would renumber the list. I'm assuming it would be done with a loop but I've never tried that.. suggestions?
Thanks - Mark
