ORDER BY In Sub Queries

I understand that I have to have a TOP statement to work with an ORDER BY in a subquery but I am unable to get it to work correctly...
I am using VS 2008 and it does throw a "TOP" error, but it does not go ahead and process it correctly like someone said it would in another post...

Is this possible or simply how do I accomplish the following?

I need to order the data by year, so I tried this query:

FROM [MyDB]

But it doesn't work.

Analyzing Lock Order Of Queries Against Same Table To Prevent Deadlocks

I need to discover the actual order in which locks are acquired on a table during a query.

This with a goal of analyzing the lock order of queries against the same table to prevent deadlocks.

I'm using SQL Server 2008 R2.

From Management Studio I execute:

begin transaction
<my query>
exec sp_lock
rollback transaction

In the output I see interesting information about which locks are acquired, but:

- are this locks ordered by the time they're acquired? That is, can I be sure that lock at row n is acquired before lock at row n+1?
- if not, how can I get this information?

SS2005 Standard (RTM &&amp; SP1 CTP1) Evaluates Sub-queries In Wrong Order

We are experiencing a problem in SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition (on x86 & x64, RTM & SP1 CTP1). The problem is we have a view which does something like "CREATE VIEW myView;SELECT * FROM MyTable WHERE ISNumeric(MyVal)=1" when you do "SELECT * FROM myView" you see a dataset which only contains numeric values.

However it's clear that if you do "SELECT * FROM myView WHERE MyVal>5" that it is evaluating the >5 before the IsNumeric function (I assume as > is less costly than IsNumeric and thus it is more efficient this way). This didn't happen in Sql Server 2000 & 7.0.

My concern here is that how can you trust views if when you put evaluations on them they're working against a different dataset to that which you view if you do SELECT * ?
I am currently working with a workaround which is to simply put TOP in the sub-queries to force the execution order to that which I've defined. However this is nasty as I can't do TOP 100% as it gets optimised out and so instead I have to do TOP 999999999 or similar.

However my biggest concern by far is that even in "SQL Server 2000 (80)" compatibility mode the behaviour is not consistent wtih SS2000.

Conditional Order By - Sort Result Set By Employee Number Ascending Order

In SQL sERVER 2008, I have two fields - Depatment and Employees. I need to sort the result set by employee number ascending order, with following exception

1)when department number = 50 - the preferred order is Employee # - 573 followed by 551-572 (employee # belong to Dept 50 = 551-573)

2)When Department number = 20 – the preferred sort order is Employee # 213-220, followed by Employee # 201-213 (employee # belong to Dept 20 = 201-220)

How shall I achieve this?

Analysis :: Order Of Rows In Tabular Table Not In Same Order Data Was Retrieved?

I never paid much attention to this before but I noticed this today in a new table I was creating.

For tables defined in the tabular model the table properties have something like SELECT Blah FROM TableName ORDER BY Blah Then in the tabular model the table's data is in the same order it was ordered by in the data source for the table.

I have a date table I setup and I noticed it is NOT respecting the sort order.

I have it sorted by DateID which sorts with the oldest date first and newest date as last row.However, the table that is imported and stored in the data model is not in that order.

I can of course manually sort the rows in BIDS/DataTools, but I find this discrepancy odd.

Would this have negative impacts on the EARLIER function for example if the data rows are not in the order specified?

I have a query that calculate the total amount of order details based on a particular order:

Select a.OrderID,SUM(UnitPrice*Quantity-Discount)

Inner Join Orders a

Group by a.OrderID

My question is what if I wanted to create a formula to something like:

UnitPrice * Quantity - DiscountAmount Where DiscountAmount = UnitPrice Quantity * Discount

Do I need to create a function for that? Also is it possible to have m y query as a table variable?

Default Sort Order - Open Table - Select Without Order By

Hi!

I recently run into a senario when a procedure quiered a table without a order by clause. Luckily it retrived data in the prefered order.

The table returns the data in the same order in SQL Manager "Open Table"

So I started to wonder what deterimins the sort order when there is no order by clause ?

I researched this for a bit but found no straight answers. My table has no PK, but an identiy column.

Hey guys, i need to find out how can i add order items under a Purchase Order number.
My table relationship is PurchaseOrder ->PurchaseOrderItem.

Find Order By Date Range Or Order Id

hi basically what i have is 3 text boxes. one for start date, one for end date and one for order id, i also have this bit of SQL

Of course we can add order by aid also, but there are tons of sqls like this, we can't update our application in one shot.

So I ask for your advice here, is there any settings can tell the db use default sort order when the order by column value are the same? Or is there any other solution to resolve this problem in one shot?

Order By Clause In View Doesn't Order.

I have created view by jaoining two table and have order by clause.

The sql generated is as follows

SELECT TOP (100) PERCENT dbo.UWYearDetail.*, dbo.UWYearGroup.*
FROM dbo.UWYearDetail INNER JOIN
dbo.UWYearGroup ON dbo.UWYearDetail.UWYearGroupId = dbo.UWYearGroup.UWYearGroupId
ORDER BY dbo.UWYearDetail.PlanVersionId, dbo.UWYearGroup.UWFinancialPlanSegmentId, dbo.UWYearGroup.UWYear, dbo.UWYearGroup.MandDFlag,
dbo.UWYearGroup.EarningsMethod, dbo.UWYearGroup.EffectiveMonth



If I run sql the results are displayed in proper order but the view only order by first item in order by clause.

Has somebody experience same thing? How to fix this issue?

I am getting the resultset sorted differently if I use a column number in the ORDER BY clause instead of a column name.

Product: Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition

Force The ORDER BY To Be In Ascending Order??

I noticed the StockDate is not sorted in proper order, like ascending order...

select top 1000 CONVERT(char, StockDate, 101) AS StockDate, timestamp from tblpurchaseraw where accountid = '119' order by stockdate desc



I noticed that StockDate is a datetime datatype so why does the month get ordered 1st, then day get ordered 2nd and year get ordered 3rd...

The sample data is MM/DD/YYYY...

So, how do I get it ordered propery by Year, Month then Day??

Lets say I have a table named [Leadership] and I want to select the field 'leadershipName' from the [Leadership] Table.

My query would look something like this:

Select leadershipName
From Leadership

Now, I would like to order the results of this query... but I don't want to simply order them by ASC or DESC. Instead, I need to order them as follows:

Executive Board Members, Delegates, Grievance Chairs, and Negotiators

My question: Can this be done through MS SQL or do I need to add a field to my [Leadership] table named 'leadershipImportance' or something as an integer to denote the level of importance of the position so that I can order on that value ASC or DESC?

I have some hierarchical data in a table. Say for example:

Now I want to be able to use CTE's to be able to traverse this tree in
1) level by level order 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10....
2) in order 1,2,4,5,8,9,3,6,7,10,11,12,13...

What would be the aueries for this. Using the following i get: 1,2,3,6,7,10,11,12,13,4,5,8,9 (interesting and potentially useful) but I would like to be able to experiment with the aforementioned orders as well.


with Tree (id)

to get the order id of the latest order for every customer.
That means that the result should be one record per customer and that would
display CustomerID and OrderID.

Parameterized Queries Running Slower Than Non-parameterized Queries

HelloWhen I use a PreparedStatement (in jdbc) with the following query:SELECT store_groups_idFROM store_groupsWHERE store_groups_id IS NOT NULLAND type = ?ORDER BY group_nameIt takes a significantly longer time to run (the time it takes forexecuteQuery() to return ) than if I useSELECT store_groups_idFROM store_groupsWHERE store_groups_id IS NOT NULLAND type = 'M'ORDER BY group_nameAfter tracing the problem down, it appears that this is not preciselya java issue, but rather has to do with the underlying cost of runningparameterized queries.When I open up MS Enterprise Manager and type the same query in - italso takes far longer for the parameterized query to run when I usethe version of the query with bind (?) parameters.This only happens when the table in question is large - I am seeingthis behaviour for a table with > 1,000,000 records. It doesn't makesense to me why a parameterized query would run SLOWER than acompletely ad-hoc query when it is supposed to be more efficient.Furthermore, if one were to say that the reason for this behaviour isthat the query is first getting compliled and then the parameters aregetting sent over - thus resulting in a longer percieved executiontime - I would respond that if this were the case then A) it shouldn'tbe any different if it were run against a large or small table B) thisperformance hit should only be experienced the first time that thequery is run C) the performance hit should only be 2x the time for thenon-parameterized query takes to run - the difference in response timeis more like 4-10 times the time it takes for the non parameterizedversion to run!!!Is this a sql-server specific problem or something that would pertainto other databases as well? I there something about the coorect use ofbind parameters that I overall don't understand?If I can provide some hints in Java then this would be great..otherwise, do I need to turn/off certain settings on the databaseitself?If nothing else works, I will have to either find or write a wrapperaround the Statement object that acts like a prepared statement but inreality sends regular Statement objects to the JDBC driver. I wouldthen put some inteligence in the database layer for deciding whetherto use this special -hack- object or a regular prepared statementdepending on the expected overhead. (Obviously this logic would onlybe written in once place.. etc.. IoC.. ) HOWEVER, I would desperatelywant to avoid doing this.Please help :)

I just upsized my Access2K db to SQL. I am using Front Page 2000 for my website. When I had the database as Access, I was able to use one of my Access queries as my record source for my data base. I was able to choose between my queries AND my tables as the source for my records. Now that I've upsized, I am no longer given that choice. My only choices are the tables. Unfortunately, my database is designed to pull records from a query, not just a table. So my question is, in FP2000, how do I use a QUERY from my newly upsized SQL db as my record source?
