Object_id Numbers On Same Server

Aug 23, 2000

I restored a development database to a test database on the same server. I thought this would be a good
thing to do because testers would have the same data as developers and the tables would be exactly alike.
However, I noticed that the object_id is identical for the tables. For example, the Accounting Calendar in the development
database and the Accounting Calendar in the test database have the same Object_id. Could anyone verify that
this is or is not going to cause me trouble?

Logic Behind Object_ID

May 19, 2007

I have 2 basic requirements as below,

1) Comparing 2 versions of same database.
2) Keeping track of schema versions of Tables & Stored Procedures so that I can rollback to previous schema.

I have started with Sys.Objects, Sys.Tables & Sys.Columns and I kept things rely on Object_ID but the problem started whenever I change some part of Table. It assigns new Object_ID to the table whenever I change it; moreover creationdate of object is also changed. So I assume that it drops and creates new table.

Please throw some light on following questions,
1) When and How Object_ID Changes?
2) Is there any other thing in database which is Unique & Not Changing with alteration of object?
3) What should be the preferred way to Compare 2 Database?

I hate readymade tools as they charge per user and my requirements are very small.

Thanking you,

Help: Should Sys.service_queues.object_id Be Subset Of Sys.dm_broker_queue_monitors.queue_id?

Apr 4, 2007

I am having trouble sending messages between service broker, set up on 2 different machine ( different domain ). The ports on which service brokers listening are bidirectional.

for some reason the messages get piled up at the sys.transmission_queue and transmission_status seems to be empty.

I found the following link and tried to find status of all message queues.

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms177628.aspx

SELECT t1.name AS [Service_Name], t3.name AS [Schema_Name], t2.name AS [Queue_Name],
CASE WHEN t4.state IS NULL THEN 'Not available'
ELSE t4.state
END AS [Queue_State],
CASE WHEN t4.tasks_waiting IS NULL THEN '--'
ELSE CONVERT(VARCHAR, t4.tasks_waiting)
END AS tasks_waiting,
CASE WHEN t4.last_activated_time IS NULL THEN '--'
ELSE CONVERT(varchar, t4.last_activated_time)
END AS last_activated_time ,
CASE WHEN t4.last_empty_rowset_time IS NULL THEN '--'
ELSE CONVERT(varchar,t4.last_empty_rowset_time)
END AS last_empty_rowset_time,
(
SELECT COUNT(*)
FROM sys.transmission_queue t6
WHERE (t6.from_service_name = t1.name) ) AS [Tran_Message_Count]
FROM sys.services t1 INNER JOIN sys.service_queues t2
ON ( t1.service_queue_id = t2.object_id )
INNER JOIN sys.schemas t3 ON ( t2.schema_id = t3.schema_id )
LEFT OUTER JOIN sys.dm_broker_queue_monitors t4
ON ( t2.object_id = t4.queue_id AND t4.database_id = DB_ID() )
INNER JOIN sys.databases t5 ON ( t5.database_id = DB_ID() )

What I noticed is the values of sys.service_queues.object_id and sys.dm_broker_queue_monitors.queue_id are totally different. I am not sure whether this has any impact on why the messages are stuck at transmission_queue

Formatting Numbers In A Mixed Column (numbers In Some Cells Strings In Other Cells) In Excel As Numbers

Feb 1, 2007

I have a report with a column which contains either a string such as "N/A" or a number such as 12. A user exports the report to Excel. In Excel the numbers are formatted as text.

I already tried to set the value as CDbl which returns error for the cells containing a string.

The requirement is to export the column to Excel with the numbers formatted as numbers and the strings such as "N/A' in the same column as string.

Any suggestions?

I Need To Update A Table With Random Numbers Or Sequential Numbers

Mar 11, 2008

I have a table with a column ID of ContentID. The ID in that column is all NULLs. I need a way to change those nulls to a number. It does not matter what type of number it is as long as they are different. Can someone point me somewhere with a piece of T-SQL that I could use to do that. There are over 24000 rows so cursor change will not be very efficient.

Dataflow To Excel - Convert Numbers Stored As Text To Numbers Excel Cell Error

Mar 27, 2007

I'm trying to write data to excel from an ssis component to a excel destination.

Even thought I'm writing numerics, every cell gets this error with a green tag:

Convert numbers stored as text to numbers

Excel Cells were all pre-formated to accounting 2 decimal, and if i manually type the exact data Im sending it formats just fine.

I'm hearing this a common problem -

On another project I was able to find a workaround for the web based version of excel, by writing this to the top of the file:

<style>.text { mso-number-format:@; } </style>

is there anything I can pre-set in excel (cells are already formated) or write to my file so that numerics are seen as numerics and not text.

Maybe some setting in my write drivers - using sql servers excel destination.

So close.. Thanks for any help or information.

Strange Problem With SQL Server - Auto-numbers Skipped

Mar 15, 2007

Hi There,I am having a strange problem with my identity column...... 1). I have a table of Products that have an identity column auto-incremented by 1. 2). I have my asp program working quite well in which the Data entry operators are adding the products into my database..... and they do not have any interface through which they can delete products........ 3). My Database is running at Web server(MS SQL Server)My problem is that when i cehcked my database.... there were around 1000 records but the auto increment number have reached to 1500. and when i checked in details then i saw that Auto number column is being skipped certain numbers..... like one entry is 1478 then the next one comes to be 1482..... and 1508 to 1516........ Its happening alot of times and it seems that SQL Server is skipping some numbers............Since it is Auto-Number so i do not have control over it through my code.... So i think the coding might not be the problem...... I have set Identity seed as well as Identity Increment both to 1.Is there any thing that you can suggest me to do??(Thanx)

SQL Server 2012 :: Assigning Numbers For A Range During INSERT

Jun 25, 2014

Given a Table1 with two columns 'Name' with some N rows of data and another Table2 with one column 'SeqNo' with N rows, each of which contains a unique integer which can be ordered monotonically, I want to do an INSERT into some Table3 with two columns 'Name' and 'SeqNo' such that each INSERT'd row gets one of the unique integers.

E.g. -

Table1 contains 'Fred','Tom','Mary','Larry'
Table2 contains 6000978,6000979,6000980,6000981

INSERT INTO Table3
SELECT Table1.Name
Table2.SeqNo
FROM Table1

And I want to get Table3

'Fred',6000978
'Tom'.6000979
'Mary',6000980
'Larry',6000981

How can I reference Table2 so that Table2.SeqNo will 'line up' properly? Note that the ordering of the SeqNo values isn't mandatory as long as each SeqNo is assigned to one and only one row.

On edit: Table2 isn't required, it's just the way I started thinking about it. It would be nicer to just have two integer vars, @StartSeqNo = 6000978 and @EndSeqNo = 6000981 for he example above. Either way is fine.

SQL Server 2012 :: How To Compare List Of Numbers Kind Of Like Lottery Results

Feb 5, 2015

... more records with similar structure.

Then you have another table with chosen numbers, same structure as above, TableGuesses.

How could you do the following comparisons between TableGuesses and TableWinners:

1. Compare a single record in TableGuesses to a single record in TableWinners to get a count of the number of numbers that match (kind of a typical lottery type of thing).

2. Compare a single record in TableGuessess to ALL records in TableWinners to see which record in TableWinners is the closest match to the selected record in TableGuesses.

SQL Server 2012 :: Use Unique Custom Error Numbers For THROW Statements?

Apr 20, 2015

My team is starting to implement error handling in our sprocs. One question we have is whether or not to use unique error numbers for custom errors (ie Errors we throw after doing some sort of validity check, not SQL Server errors). For example, we might check the value of a parameter and then throw an error that says "Parameter State_Date must be less than today, please retry".

We are using SQL Server 2012 and will be using the THROW statement, not RAISERROR, so we don't HAVE to put the numbers in sys.messages. Also, we are going to log the errors in a table, along with the error message, sproc name, line number, etc.

Is it useful to maintain a custom list of error numbers and messages? Or is it just as useful to use one standard error number and add a custom error message (which we can then search for in our code, or use the sproc name & line number we logged)? And if it is worth maintaining a list of numbers plus messages, should we go ahead and put them in sys.messages?

Viewing Large Numbers Of Stored Procs In SQL Server Management Studio

Jul 13, 2007

I work with a large and complex reporting system with several hundred reports: the Programmability; Stored Procedures node of the object explorer has become very difficult to navigate.

Is there any metadata that can be embedded in the stored procs that would create subfolders like the existing System Stored Procedures node in this node of the object explorer?

I suspect that the correct answers are:

Rename all your queries with a rational naming convention;
Cull the deadwood;
Assign them to categories then export them to separate databases.

Unfortunately, one of these has already been done, and the other two will break several hundred dependent processes - the recoding and retesting is neither economical nor desirable.

Still, all advice is welcome. Pitch your answers at a banking geek who does intermediate to advanced stored procedures and triggers, but isn't allowed to play with sharp things (like sys objects) - but I can probably get help from a grown-up on the sysadmin team: I have discovered that the rumours about human sacrifice are baseless, and they will perform favours in return for beer.

This is also a good time to ask: just how many stored procs and functions are you allowed in SQL Server 2005?
