Encryption And Recovery On Standby Machine

Dec 22, 2005

Hi there,

to follow on my question in the other forum, I have a database with triple des encrypted columns

Master key created, certificate and symmetric key using certificate. Values inserted into table (encrypted)

Can select etc, all works fine.

Back up and restore database on another server, decrypting the data results in NULLs being returned. Backed up and restore the master key, cerficate, etc but either it completes successfully or SQL states that the old and the new keys are the same and wont be changed. Master key opens (using password), cert opens (is viewable in sys.openkeys) but then closes automatically after trying to decrypt. Suggests there is something wrong with the certificate or the key, but I have no idea what it is.

Can someone please tell me exactly what is needed to view this on the 2ndary box? And what I might be missing?

Thanks

Newbie Query - Replicate To Hot Standby And How To Enable The Hot Standby For Access

Nov 14, 2007

I've been reading a million and one posts on replication

My scenario is that i have a live SQL 2000 server. In a DR invokation, i'e i've lost my live sever, i want to be able to access the same data at the DR (SQL 2000) site and have it accessable to the users. DR server has a different name to the live box.

Replicate

Master
CRMDatabase

Data changes all the time but can have hourly replication of transaction logs for this example. I've currently researched a sp called update logons but this has to be fed each account name to enable them on the new server. There must be a way to activate all CRMDatabase logons with the new server?

Could someone be kind enough to lead me through a step by step guide on the best solution.

Thanks a lot

David

How To Move Datafile On A Standby Database

use master

WITH MOVE 'BWPDATA3'
TO 'N:BWPDATA3BWPDATA3.ndf',
standby='L:TRANS_BKPBWP_20071009130001.tuf'

But I get the following error message

Accessing Database In STANDBY Mode While Log Shipping

Jul 31, 2006

Hi,

I am testing with Log shipping, I have it setup and it is working just fine. The secondary database was restored with Standby mode and is readonly. I have no problem accessing and querying data from the secondary database but I noticed if changes are made to the primary and I am accessing the database when the restore step to the secondary runs it fails with the following error:

Message
2006-07-31 09:40:54.33 *** Error: Could not apply log backup file 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLBackupLogShipCI_REPLICATION_TEST_20060731131501.trn' to secondary database 'CI_REPLICATION_TEST'.(Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.LogShipping) ***
2006-07-31 09:40:54.33 *** Error: Exclusive access could not be obtained because the database is in use.
RESTORE LOG is terminating abnormally.(.Net SqlClient Data Provider) ***

This appears to be because you can not restore to a database that is in use? How do you get around this? Is it possible? How do I query data from the secondary db without worrying about causing log shipping to fail? Do I not worry about it because at somepoint when Exclusive access is obtainable all the logs will be rolled forward, but this could create a wide gap in sychronization between the primary and secondary db's, say if someone or something does not properly log off. I guess I could disconnect all users prior to applying tlogs but that kind of defeats the purpse of having it in read only mode so that data can be accessed? Couldn't really depend on it as a stable source of data for running data extracts? I suppose it could all just come down to timing everything in the appropriate sequence? Anyway.....

To sum up:

Is there anyway to access the standby server without causing the restore process to fail?

Both the Primary and Secondary are SQL 2K5.

Thanks!

Mirroring :: Database Mirroring Changes In Application

Since we initiate, may require to clarify on its purpose and also required changes from application end.Any changes required from OS Level? (I believe both servers IP or Host name should be added in host entries. Mirroring ports should be allowed/open including Principal and mirror server IP Addresses): Windows Team.Any changes required from Application? (Instance name, authentication: user name and its password should be added in web config files): Application Team.Any changes required from Network Team? Also for mirroring both the principal and mirror servers should be with same version, does it only mean SQL Server 2008 versions are enough or does it also mean to say build numbers 10.00.4000 should also be same.URL....

SQL 2012 :: Grant Read-only Access To Windows Logins On Remote Standby Database

Mar 23, 2015

We log ship our production database tansaction logs to a secondary database on a separate remote domain.

Incidentally, this was not set up via the "Ship Transaction Logs" wizard, but instead we had to use the various system stored procedures after restoring a copy of the database on the remote domain in standby mode.

We now have an issue where users are unable to access the remote secondary database without having sysadmin privileges. Clearly we want to avoid this!

We want to be able to use Windows Authentication mode on the server of the secondary database. But since the two domains differ, is it possible to even achieve this?

How can we set up read-only access for users on the secondary database without giving them sysadmin privileges?

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Extracting Large Tables From Offsite Linked Server

Oct 1, 2014

I work in Healthcare IS for Company A, but Company B is hosting one of our EMR programs for us. This was done on purpose, so that whether a patient is seen at one or the other, their medical history is more complete. However, this puts all of the data that I need to get to on a server across town that I can only access via Sql Server Management Studio as a linked server.

Now, in some ways, the performance has been better than I expected, but sometimes it behaves very erratically. I am using OPENQUERY to handle all of the pulls, and am not joining to any local tables, in order to maximize efficiency.

Here is some of the code I run, and what happens:

SELECT *
FROM
OPENQUERY([linkedservername],
'
SELECT *
FROM Encounter_ItemChild

[Code] ....

***The above query was programmatically generated by taking the IDs from the second query, and packing as many into the IN condition as possible. Each statement could hold only about 900 IDs, so around 70 queries get built...however, each one returns the records in question in 1-2 seconds.

My main question is...if the second query pulls all IDs from Encounter in a few seconds, and that query is used in the first query's WHERE clause, why does it spin and spin, while manually throwing the IDs in instead runs almost instantly?

Database Mirroring Monitor Not Working For One Database

Apr 2, 2008

I set up a new mirror server. Everything is good except that the Database Mirroring Monitor is not working for one of the databases. In the monitor the principal data is showing up as blank

If I look at dbm_monitor_data on the principal most of the data columns (e.g. Send_queue_size) are null where as they have data for the other databases.

Both servers are SQL Server 9.0.2047 Enterprise Edition.

Any idea what might be going on here?

Thanks in advance.

Database Mirroring

Hi All,

Couple of questions about database mirroing.

1. Once the mirroring is setup is it possible to switch between high-protection and high-performance modes? If it is will I have to stop the mirroring, switch the modes and then restart it again?

2. Let's say the principal server went down and I manually failed over to the mirror server. Mirror server runs as a new principal server for a couple of days and then I bring the original principal server back up. What needs to be done in order to bring transactions on the principal server up to date?

Thanks.

Database Mirroring

Jul 30, 2007

we want to migrate our production server , without taking the database down.so what we did was , we mirrored the databases from production to one of our development servers and we took the prodcution server for uprgrade.

so today we are moving back (mirroring) all the databases from that development server to our new production server.

my question is , when i move

productionserver_old(principal server) - having the script for principal server

development server(mirror server---->principalserver)) - having the script for mirror server , which is now acting as principal server

new production server(mirror server) - having the script for mirror server. will become principal server , once i moved all the databases

now while mirroring between the developement server and the new production server, i have to run the scripts for the mirror server only.

so both the servers are havign the mirror script now...

is that a problem, or any other way i can handle this....
