Online/Offline Application That Must Synchronize With SQL 2005
Mar 10, 2007
Hi !
I must developp a WPF Application with online and offline capabilities! First I think to use XML file on the local application and transfer these XML files to a webservice that will synchronize them with the SQL 2005 Server
BUT
I read about "Replication"... and I think it will be much simpler to implement!!!
Do you think it is a good idea to have a "local" SQL Express database and replicate it (when connection available is) with the principal database that will run a standard SQL 2005 version!
Do you have another suggestion to make such an application??
Thanks for help!!!

PS: when the sql express solution a good idea is, does it give a simple solution to programm an automatic synchronization every hour?
Hello there,I have a user who can bring offline a database but he cannot bring thedatabase back online. The error which pops up is:Error5011: User does not have permission to alter database dbnameALTER DATABASE statement failed.sp_dboption command failed.Any ideas? Thanks
Hi,i try get information about the online or offline status of a databasewithin ms-sql srv 2000.I can look it up within server manager, but I'm looking for a way to getthis information from the command line or a select statement. Is there a command or a sql statement that tells me the status of adatabase ? There's some information in master.dbo.sysdatabases, but itlooks very cryptic.Any help appreciated, thanks, stefan
Hi all, I have an application running on internet, it uses SQL server datatase. I have an question want to as: can i backup database and update database online or offline? Thanks. TungNT
If you take a database offline to prevent users from accessing it, and then restart the server, will the database be back online when the server starts up?
If so, is there an option to prevent this from happening so that a database taken offline will remain offline until it is manually put online again by an administrator?
Some of my receiving service side applications usually work offline, andthey only are supposed to get connected to the network once/few times a day,to send/receive Service Broker messages. Will my sending service side application (permanent connected to thenetwork) keep retrying repeatedly to connect to the receiver?- Is retrying like that time consuming?.- I don't like it keeping trying over and over. Is retrying behaviorconfigurable?thx
I am interested in synchronising 2 sdf files which are sitting on 2 different PDAs and I want to synchronise both of them with or without desktop application. C# applications are used to talk to the applications.
Is it possible or not and if possible how can i do that. Any code snippets or any links to similar forum posts or anything will be of great help. I am a C# programmer but not SQL Developer.
I'm working on a project where I have to create a password protected form for teachers to submit reports about students. Originally I was going to use asp.net to create the form, but unfortunately the server I'm working with will not be granted asp functionality in the allotted timeframe.
To solve this issue I have another idea. So I will ask a few questions to help with research before I begin coding.
Is it possible to create a windows application that can connect to an access database hosted online? The windows app will need to be be able to update, insert, and select information from the database.
There is only going to be about 30-40 people using this windows application once or twice a week.
Thus I envision taking a password protected access database and dropping it onto a server. The windows application will have the online location of the database embeded into the code. (connection string) From there on out coding for the windows application should be the exact same as if the database was hosted locally on the computer, correct?
Also, 1. What is a good way to check and make sure the computer is connected to the internet before my application tries to access the database?
2. Are there any drastic security issues with this process that I should think about. The database will only be password proected, and the windows application will take a username/password from the user and check it against a table before they are able to submit info to the database.
I just need to be pointed in the right direction for this project. Thanks.
The other day we tried online re-indexing feature of SQL 2005 and it€™s performing faster than offline re-indexing. Could you please validate if it€™s supposed to do be this way? I always thought offline should be faster than online.
I would like to ask if there will be a write and concurrency issue if i would create an online application with just one user connecting to the database, just like most open source php/mysql that can be downloaded
i.e Setup 1. I will grant a single user that will connect to a database and will be set to a config.inc.php file and then create a table users (userid, username, password) and this table will be used for the application authentication and access control.
Setup 2. or is it much better to grant users that will connect to the database and have the table users for access control of the application?
to further illustrate my query:
Setup 1 would be: ###################Table: Users user a@ipadd --> db1 --> userid mary --> myOnlineApp user a@ipadd --> db1 --> userid john --> myOnlineApp user a@ipadd --> db1 --> userid paul --> myOnlineApp
and Setup 2 would be: #####################Table: Users user mary@ipadd --> db1 --> userid mary --> myOnlineApp user john@ipadd --> db1 --> userid john --> myOnlineApp user paul@ipadd --> db1 --> userid paul --> myOnlineApp
will Setup 1 be enough if I will use SQL Server as database?
or Setup 2 is better user/database architecture?
This application will be online enrollment for a school with 16,000 students
very much appreciated for the feedbacks and suggestions
Hi, I am relative newbie to SQLServer. When I try to take a user database offline, the query "hangs," with the query processing circle spinning. The Sharepoint 7 application is running on top of the Enterprise SQL Server 2005 db with several logins sleeping and awaiting commands. No errors are generated until I kill the offline command. Anyone have any ideas? Do I need to kill all the connections?
We have SQL cluster installed on top of windows cluster on VM environment. Node1 and Node2 under Windows Failover Cluster. SQL instance is currently on node2 the instance is up and running, but SQL Cluster service remains online pending and it restarts the instance on every 5 minutes.
SQL Browser service are running successfully.TCP/IP ports are enabled and configured. If we start the SQL server agent it is on for seconds and stopped immediately  .Cluster Service is attempt to connect to the SQL service every few minutes (setting in SQL cluster resource) for the IsAlive check, if this fails then the SQL resource is restarted even if the instance was online. Hope this is what happening exactly.

I want to synchronize my database on Pocket PC / The Emulator that use WM5 and SQLCE3, but the synchronize is doesn't use IIS as the bridge, but i want to use ActiveSync as the synchronizer bridge. The rule like this. 1. Have database on Pocket PC. 2. Have application on Desktop PC. 3. When device or emulater placed on cradle, then the database automaticaly synchronized with database server on desktop pc.
Why I want to use ActiveSync as synchronizer. 1. I have the Pocket PC cradle. So my device can synchronized using ActiveSync. 2. I have internet connection on Desktop PC. So why i must pay more for GPRS if i only need to synchronize my device with my desktop pc.
Hi,I was wondering if someone could help advise me.Basically i have a client who wants to upgrade from a desktop msaccess solution to a web based system using MS SQL Server 2005.Basically their main concern is in losing the ability to write ad-hocqueries using the MS Access query manager. I can obviously writestatic reports etc but whats the best way to give them someflexibility ??Can anyone advise me if there is any product that can do this for SQLServer 2005 (which im sure there is) but will work in a webenvironment.Or does anyone have any helpful ideas ???all help / advice greatly appreciatedCG
I am trying to install sql server 2005 books online but I am failing and I am getting this message "This installation pakage could not be opened.Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package"
am I doing anything wrong or has the version of books online changed? Do I have to install anything else before installing it? or does my operating system not support it?
I downloaded and tried to install the file "SqlServer2K5_BOL_May2007.msi" and got a message: "This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package." Please advise.
Can some one give me detail instruction to installing the SQL Server 2005 Express Books Online. I am new to SQL Server and want to install the MS training material.
I'm not experienced with SQL Server 2005.I've got a live copy of my database running on the web server.I've got another copy running on my desktop that I make changes to.Whats the best way to sync between the two so:1. I don't have to take the application offline2. I don't loose any data from the live database3. But I can implement changes to tables and/or add new tables
Does anyone have any great suggestions on how I can import an online XML file into an SQL 2005 table?
So far I tried to accomplish it with SSIS Data Flow Task where my source is XML Source (Data access mode: XML file location; XML location: URL, Use inline schema = True). This set up properly identified the columns to be imported.
I used Copy Column data flow transformation task to load data to OLE DB destination table that has same structure.
When I run the task it does execute with no errors, however the table remains empty. It looks like I am failing to read the actual data.
Do you have any suggestions? I am willing to go around this approach with stored procs/com/you name it €“ just make it work!
I'm attempting to use RDA to synchronize a pocket pc emulator with SQL Server 2005 database by following tutorial http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa454892.aspx, which uses AdvWorksMobile database that comes with SQL Server 2005.
When get to testing of "To test application features " ( step 4 of the merge replication setup lab ), I am receiving SQLCe Exception errors.
ORIGINALLY, I was able to deploy an application and view the local database on the emulator, but once I clicked "InitSinc" button, I received an error.
"Failure to connect to SQL Server with provided connection information. SQL Server does not" exist, access is denied because the SQL user is not a valid user on the SQL Server, or the password is incorrect. Found this error listed in Server Agent Errors log http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms172357.aspx, but it wasn't very helpful since it doesn't provide any suggestions on fixing the problems.
I am brand new to SQL CE Server , mobile programming and .NET framework in general so please bare with me
All the connections / security settings, etc that were set up were taken from a tutorial so I am not sure what SQLCeServer is complaining about. Reading up on the error on the web didn't help, it all pointed to making sure that the snapshot folder had correct permissions set up. I verified that MACHINENAMEUISR_MACHINENAME guest user had Read rights to the database so I don't think that piece is the problem. Otherwise ,Merge publication has been setup in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio by following the tutorial.
I am trying to run this sync on my home pc so there should be no issues with any user permissions
I have IIS installed
I did NOT have SQL Server Agent running in management studio at this time
I am trying to run this tutorial on an XP machine, which is my regular home PC so I dont think there are any special networking settings to consider
I am able to hit http://localhost/AdvWorksMobile/sqlcesa30.dll from my pc OK, but when I try to hit it from a cradled emulator ( after replacing "localhost" with "MACHINE_NAME" ), Internet Explorer on the emulator gives me a "Cannot Connect With Current Settings" error message. This part wasn't part of tutorial but decided so not sure if I am supposed to be able to hit it from my emulator..so I am not sure if the fact that I can't hit it is related to the problem. AFTER STARTING SQL SERVER AGENTin Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio, I killed the application, and after relaunching it, it hits "The Specified table does not exist [Vendor]" error. This time it doesn't even launch first - that is I dont even get to pressing "InitSinc" button. Debugger is showing that this error is hit on the following line in AdvWorksMobile.AddWorksDataSetTableAdapters
int returnValue = this.Adapter.Fill(dataTable);
I am not sure why the errors changed on me after starting SQL Server Agent. What can I do to fix this connection problem?
I have done a bit of searching around and cant find a clear answer to this question.
Current Setup Desktop application (c#) that connects to a SQL Server 2005 express database on the same local network as the application (currently 3 users)
It is only a very small company and has just taken on their first remote worker, but expects to take on another 6-8 over the next few months. They have asked for the database to be moved online.
The application was written in such a way that everything has been done using no stored procs, or views, it is all native SQL.
This will be my first DB hosted online and before I go ahead and do anything I just wanted to make sure what I have to do is correct, sorry if this is a very basic question, although I have been programming for a long time, I have never had the chance to do any online databases before.
Will this work. 1.Find a SQL Server 2005 Hosting company. 2.Move the database to the server. 3.Setup the users permissions. 3.Alter the connection string in the application to point to the new location.
So the only thing that would change would be a new connection string in the application preferences?
Or am I living in a dream world, because nothing is ever that simple.
One thing I am worried about is the security/visiblity of the database and data as it travels from the server to the client and back.
I have my first small SQl Server 2005 database developed on my localserver and I have also its equivalent as an online database.I wish to update the local database (using and asp.net interface) andthen to upload the data (at least the amended data, but given thesmall size all data should be no trouble) to the online database.I think replication is the straight answer but I have no experience ofthis and I am wondering what else I might use which might be lesscomplicated. One solution is DTS (using SQL 2000 terms) but i am notsure if I can set this up (1) to overwrite existing tables and (2) notto seemingly remove identity attributes from fields set as identities.I know there are other possibilities but I would be glad of advice asto the likely best method for a small database updated perhaps onceweekly or at less frequent intervals,Best wishes, John Morgan
I have an asp.net application. This application provide consolidated information to the user using Analysis Services 2005. Within it, one aspx page uses MDX query to retrieve the information from the cube. However, we are unable to access AS 2005 because of authentication issues. What would be the easier to implement and deploy scenario? How can I access AS 2005 from an ASP.NET application? Is there any feature to use?
We have an an application that was written using OLE DB (ADO) against a SQL 2000 Server that uses an Application role to give rights to the database objects. It connects, calls sp_setapprole and goes on. If the database needs to LOCK a record, it is creating a new ADO Connection and instantiating the Approle again. This model has been working fine up til now.
Now we are installing a SQL 2005 server for the latest version of the product we are working on and are running into an error. The error is Error: 18059, Severity: 20, State: 1. The connection has been dropped because the principal that opened it subsequently assumed a new security context, and then tried to reset the connection under its impersonated security context. This scenario is not supported. See "Impersonation Overview" in Books Online.
It's happening when the second ADO Connection for locking a record is being created and the sp_setapprole is being executed.
One of my questions is what is the problem with executing the approle on a different connection? Our code has not changed, so obviously SQL 2005 is doing something different. The other is What can we do to correct this?
Is the resource pooling different? We had problems in the beginning with approles and figured out through research that we needed to add OLE DB Services=-2 to the connection string to turn off resource pooling.
Is there an extra step to using Approles in SQL 2005?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as we need to resolve this ASAP.
Importing CVS to SQLServer 2005 in a web application: I need to import CSV file to a table. This is a .Net 2.0 web application running in the WebServer which has .Net 2.0 installed. SQL Server 2005 is a database in another machine. What are my options? Would SSIS work in WebServer if no database installed in that machine. Thanks
