In my SSIS project, i have to retrieve data from an oracle 10g database. On my personal laptop it works, but on our test-env i get the error below, when i try to test my connection to the oracle datasource.
Could this because i have oracle XE installed yet on my personal laptop, and it is not installed on the computer of our test environment where the SSIS runs? If that's the reason, it sounds very strange, because it would mean i have to install an oracle environment also on the computer with SSIS, just to make a connection to another oracle server...
Test connection failed because of an error in initializing provider. Oracle client and networking components were not found. These components are supplied by Oracle Corporation and are part of the Oracle Version 7.3.3 or later client software installation.
Provider is unable to function until these components are installed.
I have a network of all win2000 machines. The server is win2000 and is a domain controller running sql 2000. I've been having intermittent problems with our software staying connected to sql and found that installing the sql client networking package fixes it. The problem I'm having is that users with admin rights work just fine, but users with just user rights aren't. I set up client neworking by moving named pipes above tcp and setting the alias to the sql server but the user machines doesn't remember the alias. Here's a list of what I've tried:
log in as admin and enter alias
create .reg file of proper registry settings and import but got a key is in use error, cannot import registry
created shortcut to cmd and set shortcut to run as diff user, log in as admin, run .reg file, imports fine, alias still missing in user computer.
Any ideas what might make the alias not stick? The users cannot install software and there might be some other security setting or restriction keeping it from sticking but I have yet to find it.
I have a question about client components. I read someplace where if sql client components are preinstalled (if you delete sql express-client components cannot install, even if they are preinstalled
I have sql express default installation from vs 2008 pro I have not installed sql express (client components, database components I wish to install cd standard edition on my computer for reporting services Also wanted to add enterprise server so I need report manager office 2007 installed by myself. I came across this article kb909967. Is there anyway to check make sure I can install client components installs on standard edition I also read kb 964164 installing sql on vs 2008 vista ultimate Thanks
I'm trying to do an unattended install of the client components for SLQ2005. I have read the document on doing a install from the command prompt but when I use the "ADDLOCAL" switches I get some components that I don't require. For example, I am using the following command to run the setup - "start /wait <path>setup.exe ADDLOCAL=Client_Components,SQL_Tools90,Connectivity". When I look at the Add/Remove Programs list I can see that it has installed "MSXML 6.0 Parser", "SQL 2005 Backward Compatibilty" and "Office 2003 Web Components". The only components I require are the "SQL Support Files", "SQL Server Native Client" and " CLient Tools". If I run "start /wait <path>setup.exe REMOVE=SQLXML,TOOLS_BC_DEP" it will remove "Office 2003 Web Components" and "SQL 2005 Backward Compatibilty" but not the "MSXML 6.0 Parser". How can I get rid of this?
I'm building a new server and am having a problem witht he SQL install. It's a Dell 2905 running Windows 2003 SP1 x64 and SQL 2005 x64. I'm able to install everything except for the Client Components, and even upgrade to SQL SP2.
I keep getting the following error:

When running the GUI client, I chose to install the SQL Server 2005 'Client Components' on F:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server, the installation put over 700MB of files on my C: drive, but there were less than 400MB of files in the location I specified. Only about 1/2 of the files I expected were put in the location I specified. Why? How can I redirect all of the 'shared' files and other misc. development pieces to install somewhere other than my boot drive? There is no way to specify this when using the GUI, can it be done with a command line install?
When attempting to install SQL Server 2005 SP1, I receive the error, "a recently applied update, KB913090, failed to install." The Installation complete dialog shows the Client Components product Status as "Failure" with the description detail, "Unable to install Windows Installer MSP file". My Operating System is Windows Server 2003 SP1.
Is it possible to force the SLQ 2005 Client Components to be installed into a diffrent location other than the default location?
What I'm trying to do is run the setup command though the command line to create an unattended client installation with all the client componets to a diffrent location that

This situation, I am guessing, also preventing me to run import/export from the SQLServer Client.
I have installed successfully Microsoft SQL server 2005 in MSCS.
However the set up did not install Workstation components (client tools - SSMS etc).
I have successfully installed workstation components in one node of cluster.
However setup is giving following error while installing workstation components on other node. (From this node MS SQL server 2005 was installed).

Can I create ODP.NET connection in my SSIS connection manager. I had downloaded and installed ODP.NET on my server provided by oracle. The idea is I need to test this provider and see what is the difference connecting oracle database and the data load speed.
I have downloaded Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Evaluation Edition ISO from the following site and burned it onto a DVD. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=6931FA7F-C094-49A2-A050-2D07993566EC&displaylang=en
Prior to this I have installed Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edtion. During setup I have selected all the native client components i.e. Management Studio, Business Intelligense Studio. But after the install I am not able to see them under All Programs-> Microsoft SQL Server 2005. On further searching I have come across this link
First of all, there is no sqlrun_tools.msi under setup folder of the dvd. And also when I tried to change component from Add/Remove programs and following the instructions as specified on clicking Change Installed components all that I see are: Connectivity Components and Software Development kit.
Could someone tell me how can I install Management Studio/ Business Intelligence Studio seperately? I don't want to go through the process of re-installation.
I have tried everything I can find online to resolve an ongoing issue with a SSIS package that pulls data from Oracle. I have other servers that can function just fine connecting to the same Oracle database. I have the 10g x64 client installed and I can TNSPing the database from the command prompt. I get varying errors depending on what I am doing. If I execute the package stored in SSIS MSDB from SSMS on my computer, it runs just fine. If I run it from the server I get:

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Oracle on this server. I tried the 32bit Oracle Client as well as the 64bit client. I rebuilt the package to use Data Flow Tasks from scratch, and I have the same issues. If I try and build the package on the server itself in BIDS, I get TNS errors in BIDS trying to create connection managers. I am missing something, but I have no idea what it is. If I try and use a DataReader Source, I get:
System.InvalidOperationException: Attempt to load Oracle client libraries threw BadImageFormatException. This problem will occur when running in 64 bit mode with the 32 bit Oracle client components installed. ---> System.BadImageFormatException: An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format. It just doesn't add up. I get this exception with the 64 bit client installed. Anyone with ideas, I am getting near to the point of migrating backwards to 32 bit SQL on this server to be rid of this problem.
I've been working with MS XP OS and Oracle Client 9i (9.2) and my project was working properly. In another machine with the OS: MS Windows 2003 Server SP.1 and Oracle Client 10g I'm getting the error "System.Data.OracleClient requires Oracle client software version 8.1.7 or greater " when trying to open a connection.
I have created a DTS package that pulls data in from Oracle into SQLServer. When I run it directly on the server (from EnterpriseManager), it works fine. When I run it from Enterprise Manager on aclient machine that does not have the Oracle client software, it doesnot run, giving me the error: "The Oracle client and networkingcomponents were not found...". I was hoping I wouldn't need to havethe client software installed on a machine other than the server whereSql Server is running. The problem here is that there are a number ofmachines from where I would like to execute this DTS package that I donot want to install/configure the Oracle client software. I don'tquite understand why the configuration of the client is importanthere. In my mind, when I am using enterprise manager from a clientmachine, I am using it sort of like a terminal services client toconnect to the server. I guess there is a lot more happening in thebackground. Thanks for any feedback,Marcus
I was hoping someone had this problem and has a solution... :)
Some background info:
SQL 2005 Enterprise x64
Windows 2003 R2 x64 Enterprise (clustered)
Oracle client 10.2.0.3 (latest as of 2/2/07)
The issue I'm having is I have a link server setup within SQL 2005 connecting to a Oracle 8 database server. The Oracle client I'm using is 10.2.0.3 (latest version from Oracle). From the SQL 2005 server I'm able to query the remote oracle server through the link server I had setup if I query the table directly. If I perform a query to a view on the Oracle server I'm able to see the colum names, but not the data. This only happens when I'm using the Oracle client, if I use the MS client for Oracle it works fine OR if I use SQL Plus.
Now, you're probally asking, why not just use MS's driver... Well, I would If I could, but Microsoft hasn't provided a 64 bit driver for Oracle which I need to create the link server in SQL.
Everything I've read says that custom data flow components are built by inheriting from the Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.PipelineComponent class.
But the stock components such as the Derived Column data flow transformation must each be implemented by their own class. So how do I base my custom components on those classes? The documentation for the PipelineComponent class doesn't list any such subclasses.
In another thread Jamie Thomson very informatively said "The components in SSIS are deliberately atomic (i.e. they do something very specific) so that its easy to put them together to build something greater than the sum of the parts". Which does make a lot of sense. However, I've been finding that I end up having to create exactly the same "pattern" of combined transform components again and again in order to solve the same problem but in different dataflows (or even within the same dataflow). Cut-and-paste-tastic! In order to obtain real re-use, it seems to me like SSIS is crying out for an easy way to create new components by using composition - i.e. the ability to take commonly-used combinations of existing components and create new "super" components (without having to write Custom Transform Components in C#/VB.Net and handle everything in code).
Does anyone know if this sort of functionality is likely to make it into SSIS in the forseeable future?
We have a small office network consisting of 6 workstations and a server. I want to know if it is possible to be able to run sql server from the workstations and host the created sql databases on the server rather than an individual pc? If so how do i do this?
I've written a program for one of my clients, and they are making alot of changes. Typically when I make a change, I have to go into the office and re-install the updates to every system that uses the application. I would like ot be able to install the application in a central location, and then run shortcuts to everyones PC so when I update the application I just have to install it in one place. How can I do this? Also they clients are running a windows domain in the office. How can I accomplish this task?
I am currently using SQL Server 2005 Express to run a social networking website on a dedicated server (Windows Server 2003, code is written in ASP.net). Obviously express is too limited to run this site, but for now I am still getting the site operational so the demands are low. Soon I will begin advertising and adding many users to the site - can anyone recommend a version of SQL Server that I would need? My programmers say I should go with enterprise, but that seems overkill (and my hosting provider - theplanet.com does not even offer it). Would workgroup be enough, or should I go with standard edition?
To be honest I do not trust my programmers experience with SQL server which is why I am asking for help here (they are outsourced from India, and I am becoming more and more convinced that I need an onshore IT manager for them - finding that is another issue...). Also, are there built in backup features with SQL Server? My programmers told me recently that they will need to put in significant work to setup a backup system, but it seems to me like one might already be built in.
I am using the personal edition of sql server 2000 and i have a number of databases stored on the harddrive, how would i set up a connection with other PC's to be able to view/modify/delete the data through an access 2000 front end. The other PC's will not have SQL server on them but will have Access 2000, they will need to go via the network which is non-microsoft compliant.
Thank you very much for you help it would be very much appreciated.

I have an issue using parameterised reports connecting to Oracle using "ODBC" and "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle" using parameteried reports. The following error is generated "ORA-01008 not all variables bound (Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle)" and a similiar one for ODBC. It works fine for simple reports. Do these 2 drivers have issues passing parameters for a remote Oracle query? Thanks.

OK ------------------------------ For most of my queries to Oracle I can cast the columns to get rid of the error (CAST x AS DECIMAL(10) etc), but this does not work for:
1) Union
I have a select like "SELECT NVL(myColumn, 0) .... FROM myTable UNION SELECT 0 AS myColumn, .... FROM DUAL"
Even if I cast the columns in both selects (SELECT CAST(NVL(myColumn, 0) AS DECIMAL(10, 0) .... UNION SELECT CAST(0 AS DECIMAL(10, 0)) AS myColumn, .... FROM DUAL) I still get the error above.
2) SQL command from variable
The select basically looks like this:
"SELECT Column1, Column2, ... FROM myTable WHERE Updated BETWEEN User::LastLoad AND User::CurrentLoad"
Again, even if I cast all columns (like in the union), I still get the same error.
