Order By (boolean) Acces-sqlserver

I have migrated an Access database to SQLserver,

all seems ok,
but I found that an "order by" on a boolean Access field, is reverse under
SQLserver ?
I had to add "desc" to my code "order by field desc" to retrieve the correct display.

Could someone confirm this ? I am very surprised.

I have a few questions about writing User Defined Functions in VB.Net for Sql Server 2005.

1.- How can I return a Boolean value from my functions? I want that the next sql stament works:

SELECT * FROM Table_1 WHERE dbo.EMPTY(Column1)

2.- Its possible to use UDF without the €œdbo.€? String? Such as:

SELECT * FROM Table_1 WHERE EMPTY(Column1)

Can't Acces

my colleague is using visual studio (VB) and making windows applications. we used same connection string but i can't connect to the sql server.

i am using visual studio(2003) .net(C#) and making web applications. this is the code.

Acces To SQL Guidence?

OK I have been trying on my own to move from Access to SQL express/Developer. I have not found much in the way of guidence. Any suggestions? I would rank myself as fairly advanced with Access but just a newby to the SQL products... I keep blasting into walls and issues in the SQL world and would rather learn from someone elses' hardship rather than re-invent what has been undoubtably been already discovered.

I do fairly advanced reports and Large imports, Hence the need for developer rather than express, since the express import facility is hopelessly crippled. Even the developer SSIS is not well doccumented and seems pretty buggy and hard to use, even with the wizzards, As for reports.... well I'm expecting that to be a fairly had road to climb also...

I am running an Access 2000 front end and MS SQL2000 as a backend and I am having problems with record locking.

I have just found out that If you use ODBC then Access acts as if No Locks are set. In an ideal world I need the record to be locked by a user as soon as they move onto it. If not as soon as they start editing it?

I am writing a package to process perfmon logs. The issue I have come across is that the perfmon process holds onto the log file and SSIS fails because it wants to exclusive read access. Is there any way of getting SSIS to not take an exclusive read on the file.

I can read the file in notepad fine but not SSIS.

After that when i tried to access the database through Qury analyzer it is giving me error
Msg 911, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Could not locate entry in sysdatabases for database 'salecumoffers'. No entry found with that name. Make sure that the name is entered correctly.
But it is showing me the tables and their Contents from Remote server in enterprise manager...

This is a part of my project and that are my first steps. I just want to know if there is a user with "username" already in the database. The MSDN Documentation says that the ExecuteNonQuery() Method returns the number of affected rows. But if I run this code I always get x=-1. What does that mean ?

I am new to SQL Server but have been using Access to provide Multi-User acces to a central data store. We are evaluating the replacement of Access with SQL Server. With Access we don't need any special installation; I believe that the Jet Database Engine installed locally on each user's PC allows them to work with this in a disconnected manner; we use ADO.net 2.0 with VB.net 2005.

If each user has a locally installed SQL Server Express can they all attach to a database that resides on a shared network location?

In another post on the Forum I see the following regarding multi-user access:
Our application You will need to pick a central computer that everyone will be using the access the data and attach the file to the parent instance of SQL Express on that comuter, giving it a name that you can use to access it. Then you will need to modify your connection string to connect to the named database on the central server...

Can multiple locally installed SQL Server Express instances attach to a single data store that resides on a shared network location?

If not, what permissions do I need to create a parent instance of SQL Server Express?

Why Can't I Acces My SQL Server 2005 Db After Working With Visual Web Developer?

I am developing an asp.net app using visual web developer. I am using a sql server 2005 db for the back end. I have learned that I have to restart my machine if I want to work with the db in SQL Server 2005 Express after working with it in Visual Web Developer.

I am wondering why this is. I am assuming that the db is locked when it is used with VWD. Is this correct? Am I refering to it's status of "locked" correctly? Should I call this something else?

Conditional Order By - Sort Result Set By Employee Number Ascending Order

In SQL sERVER 2008, I have two fields - Depatment and Employees. I need to sort the result set by employee number ascending order, with following exception

1)when department number = 50 - the preferred order is Employee # - 573 followed by 551-572 (employee # belong to Dept 50 = 551-573)

2)When Department number = 20 – the preferred sort order is Employee # 213-220, followed by Employee # 201-213 (employee # belong to Dept 20 = 201-220)

Analysis :: Order Of Rows In Tabular Table Not In Same Order Data Was Retrieved?

I never paid much attention to this before but I noticed this today in a new table I was creating.

For tables defined in the tabular model the table properties have something like SELECT Blah FROM TableName ORDER BY Blah Then in the tabular model the table's data is in the same order it was ordered by in the data source for the table.

I have a date table I setup and I noticed it is NOT respecting the sort order.

I have it sorted by DateID which sorts with the oldest date first and newest date as last row.However, the table that is imported and stored in the data model is not in that order.

I can of course manually sort the rows in BIDS/DataTools, but I find this discrepancy odd.

Would this have negative impacts on the EARLIER function for example if the data rows are not in the order specified?

Class Method Is Smoking Fast When Executed Outside Of SQLServer, Dog Slow As A CLR Function Is SQLServer - Anyone?

We have a static class that makes an HTTPWebRequest to get XML data from one of our vendors. We use this as input to a stored proc in SQLServer2005. When I compile this class and call it from a console application in visual studio it executes in milliseconds, everytime. When I compile it, create the assembly and clr function and execute it in SQLServer, it takes around 14 seconds to execute the first time, then on subsequent requests it is again really fast, until I wait for 10 seconds and re-execute, once again it is slow the first time and then fast on subsequent requests. We do not see this behavior when executing outside SQLServer. Makes me think that some sort of authentication is perhaps taking place the first time the function is run in SQLServer? I have no idea how to debug this further. Anyone seen this before or have any ideas?

Problem Unicode Data 0x2300 In SQLServer 2000 SQLServer 2005 Express

Hi experts;
I have a problem with unicode character 0x2300
I created this table
create table testunicode (Bez nchar(128))

Insert Data
insert into testunicode (Bez)values('Œ€„¢')
with 2 Unicode characters
Œ€ = 0x2300
„¢ = 0x2122

Selecting the data
select Bez from testunicode
I see
"?„¢"

„¢ = 0x2122 is ok but instead of 0x2300 there is 0x3f

When I modify the insert statement like that ( 8960 = 0x2300 )
insert into testunicode (Bez)values(NCHAR(8960)+'„¢')

and select again voila i see
"Œ€„¢"
Does anyone have an idea?

Trying To 'load' A Copy Of A SQLServer 2000 Database To SQLServer 2005 Express

I am trying to 'load' a copy of a SQLServer 2000 database to SQLServer 2005 Express (on another host). The copy was provided by someone else - it came to me as a MDF file only, no LDF file.

I have tried to Attach the database and it fails with a failure to load the LDF. Is there any way to bypass this issue without the LDF or do I have to have that?

The provider of the database says I can create a new database and just point to the MDF as the data source but I can't seem to find a way to do that? I am using SQL Server Management Studio Express.

I have a query that calculate the total amount of order details based on a particular order:

Select a.OrderID,SUM(UnitPrice*Quantity-Discount)
From [Order Details]
Inner Join Orders a
On a.OrderID=[Order Details].OrderID
Group by a.OrderID

My question is what if I wanted to create a formula to something like:

UnitPrice * Quantity - DiscountAmount Where DiscountAmount = UnitPrice Quantity * Discount

Do I need to create a function for that? Also is it possible to have m y query as a table variable?

Default Sort Order - Open Table - Select Without Order By

Hi!

I recently run into a senario when a procedure quiered a table without a order by clause. Luckily it retrived data in the prefered order.

The table returns the data in the same order in SQL Manager "Open Table"

So I started to wonder what deterimins the sort order when there is no order by clause ?

I researched this for a bit but found no straight answers. My table has no PK, but an identiy column.
