ORDER BY Clause Does Not Work In SQL 2005?

Feb 6, 2006

Hi,
A quick background on the problem;
My company is in the process of a migration from Windows Advanced Server 2K, SQL 2K to Server 2003 and SQL 2005. I'm not certain of the exact process used by our DBA to convert the DB, but I can access it, and all my tables/views/sprocs appear to be in the right place.
I copied all my web files to our new server after the DBA was done with her job, made a new user on the new instance of SQL server, changed a few connection strings in my global.asa and global.asax, and ta-dah! Just like magic, the new site opened on our new servers without much resistance.
Except....
None of the content on our sites is sorted. I cannot seem to get ORDER BY statements to work at all. They appear to be disregarded by SQL server when not in MODIFY mode for a particular view (in SQL Server Management Studio).
So, when I MODIFY a view, add criteria (NOT SORT), save the changes, then OPEN, the criteria is respected. The filter is applied. BUT...
If I MODIFY a view and add a SORT using ORDER BY (by hand or with the Manager) the sort is NEVER respected when the view is Opened through the manager or in my code.
If I open any sorted view and then click MODIFY, and then RUN (without making ANY changes), the sort works with no problem whatsoever.
To summarize/restate my case, if I OPEN any view in the system that has an ORDER BY criteria, the sort is NOT APPLIED. If I instead right-click and MODIFY, then click RUN, the SORT is APPLIED.
I've tried sorting datetime and text fields, all with the same results - none. This single dumb issue has been delaying the migration of our servers for days!
Can anyone help?

Thanks always in advance,
Drew

SQL 2005 Collation Set / Sort Order

Sep 20, 2007

I'm in the process of migrating an existing sql server 2000 that currently has the following collation set / sort order :
SQL_Latin1_General_CP850_CS_AS.

I would like to know what the corresponding collation set / sort order is for SQL Server 2005. Looking at the option when installing there doesn't seem to be an option for 850 multilingual and case sensitive and accent sensitive. This is when selecting SQL Collations 9used for compatability with previous version of SQL Server).

If I were to select Latin1_General and check the Case sensitive and Accent sensitive would this give me the desired results ?

Ant help appreciated...

2000 To 2005 SQL Statement Order By Issue

Jul 9, 2007

Hi,

I have a simple sql statement that used to work in SQL 2000 that isn't working in SQL 2005. The order by clause doesn't seem to have any effect on the result set. The sql statement is:

ALTER VIEW dbo.SELECT_PP_END
AS
SELECT TOP 100 PERCENT

PP_PERIOD_ID,

CONVERT(VARCHAR, PP_END_DATE, 101) AS PP
FROM dbo.PP_PERIODS
ORDER BY PP_END_DATE DESC

The period end date is appearing in ascinding order on sql server 2005 and in the correct order in sql 2000. Any idea? Thank you for your help

SQL Server 2005 Order By Date Does Not Sort Properly

I am using Access 2003 as a front-end to a SQL Server 2005 database.I make design changes using SQL Server Management Studio. I have atable that includes a datetime column. I create a view and sort bythe datetime field. When I initially look at the result it is sortedcorrectly. Then I save the view and re-open it and it is not sorted.I've simplified the view so it only contains the date field and itstill does not sort. Here is the view:SELECT TOP (100) PERCENT Period_DateFROM dbo.Period_SummaryORDER BY Period_Date DESCThe date seems to be a random order.I don't have this problem in the SQL Server 2000 version of thedatabase.Help please! Thanks,Jerry

Multiple Versions Of SQL Server 2005 - What Order To Install?

Jun 15, 2007

I currently have three SQL Server instances installed on my notebook. One is v8, which I believe is used by an accounting application. The other two are as follows:-

SQL Server MSSMLBIZ

SQL Server SQLEXPRESS

The second one (SQLEXPRESS) fails to start generating the following error:-

The SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) service terminated with service-specific error 17058 (0x42A2).

Other services listed in SQL Server Configuration Manager are:-

SQL Server Integration Services - which runs apparently normally.

SQL Server Analysis Services (MSSQLSERVER)

SQL Server Reporting Services (MSSQLSERVER)

SQL Server Browser

The last thre of these are run under LocalSystem.

I have been trying to install the SQLServer SP2 to the SQLEXPRESS instance for some number of days now, but each time it runs, it fails to install.

I am beginning to wonder if there is a sequence of installation for each of the above instances that should be followed. Can anyone give me any suggestions, or answers to the above problems?

Thanks,

SQL 2005 Upgrade Insert Into Select * Changes Order Of Columns

Dec 13, 2007

Hi there,

This appears to be a change in behaviour between SQL 2000 & 2005. Can anyone confirm?

We have two tables with same schema but different column orders. In Sql 2000, the statement

Insert Into table1 select * from table2

appears to map the column names between the two tables. There is one column out of order, however Sql 2000 doesn't seem to care and correctly inserts the data.

In Sql 2005 the behaviour is to return the columns in the order of table2, rather than mapping column names. This results in incorrect values being added to the columns. (Column shift)

The Sql 2005 behaviour seems to be correct, and select * is bad practice anyway, however I would like to confirm why this was changed and whether there is a service pack/hotfix in 2000 that would have the same result.

We are running compatibility mode in Sql 2005 v9.0.3042.

Sql 2000 is 8.0.2187

thanks,
Andrew

INSERT INTO OPENROWSET Does Not Respect ORDER BY Clause On SQL Server 2005 EE

Jul 3, 2007

Hi,
I need to pass data from a SQL Server data base to an Access data base. To do this I use the OPENROWSET as followed:
FR

INSERT INTO OPENROWSET('Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0', 'C:Aux.mdb'; 'Admin'; '',Test) (Id, Name, TypeId) SELECT Id,Name,TypeId
FROM Test
ORDER BY TypeId

FR

On SQL Server 2000 or MSDE the data is transfered as expected, respecting the specified order. But when I run the same clause on a SQL 2005 EE the data is transfered, but the order is not respected.
So my question is if I have to activate an option for the order to be respected or if this is a bug.

Best regards,
Ângelo Vilela

Interesting Behavior, Sql 2005 Std, Order By Date Convert To String

Feb 19, 2008

Note the code below, running on the version noted.

I just found this today, figured I'd share. Not sure if it's a known bug or a "special" feature. The only difference between the two queries is the 3rd line, everything else is the same. Notice that the sort order changes, yet no errors or warnings are given. I assume that the table aliases are ignored for the order by, unless there are duplicate column names in the results.

I abstracted this from a bug I discovered in one of my apps today, where I have sales reps assigned to their clients with start and end dates. A while back, a developer asked me to format the dates without the time portion, and when I did so, I introduced the problem. I resolved it temporarily by ordering by convert(datetime, startdate) but I found it strange that the column alias match overrides the table alias attempted match in the order by. Another way to get around this would be to change the column aliases, then the sort order would be as desired, but I didn't want to have to change the app code for something so trivial.

My apologies if this is a duplicate.

Express Will Not Load. Insurmountable Difficulties With Order Of Uninstalls/order Of Installs/ Suggestions Plz

Finding the "pieces of information" I need to successfully install the SQL Server Express edition is so complex. Uninstalls do "not" really uninstall completely, leading to failure of SQL install. Can you suggest a thorough, one-stop site for directions for the order of app uninstalls and then the order for app installs for the following...

SQL Server Express edition

Visual Studios 2005

Jet 4.0 newest upgrade

.Net Framework 2.0 (or should I use 3.0)

VS2005 Security upgrade

Anything else I need for just creating a database for my VS2005 Visual Basic project?

I was trying to use MS Access as my backend db but would like to try SQL Express

Analysis :: Order Of Rows In Tabular Table Not In Same Order Data Was Retrieved?

May 19, 2015

I never paid much attention to this before but I noticed this today in a new table I was creating.

For tables defined in the tabular model the table properties have something like SELECT Blah FROM TableName ORDER BY Blah Then in the tabular model the table's data is in the same order it was ordered by in the data source for the table.

I have a date table I setup and I noticed it is NOT respecting the sort order.

I have it sorted by DateID which sorts with the oldest date first and newest date as last row. However, the table that is imported and stored in the data model is not in that order.

I can of course manually sort the rows in BIDS/DataTools, but I find this discrepancy odd.

Would this have negative impacts on the EARLIER function for example if the data rows are not in the order specified?

Report Builder - Filter Dropdown Order Post 2005 SP2 Incorrect

Mar 7, 2007

Hi All,

Hope someone can help here. Since installing Service Pack 2 onto our SQL 2005 instances our report models are not working correctly. When selecting fields within the models as filters, and getting them to prompt when the report is run, the ordering of the data within the filters does not match the selected ordering in the model definition. The ordering is random each time the report is run.

This issue does not happen when setting the filter up, the data appears in the correct order, but when running the report the filter data is incorrect.

I have spent the last 4 hours building a new system and testing this with each stage of service packing. The RTM version of SQL 2005 is ok, SP1 is also OK, but when SP2 is applied the ordering fails.

Any ideas?

Many thanks in advance.

Regards

Nick

2) in order 1,2,4,5,8,9,3,6,7,10,11,12,13...

What would be the aueries for this. Using the following i get: 1,2,3,6,7,10,11,12,13,4,5,8,9 (interesting and potentially useful) but I would like to be able to experiment with the aforementioned orders as well.

with Tree (id)

as

(

select id from WithTest

where parent is null

union all

select a.id

from Tree b join WithTest a

on b.id = a.parent

)

select * from Tree

Any ideas? Thanks.

Order ID For Latest Order For Every Customer

Jan 8, 2008

Hi!
For the Orders table (let's assume for the Northwind database), I'm trying
to get the order id of the latest order for every customer.
That means that the result should be one record per customer and that would
display CustomerID and OrderID.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Assaf
