Hi,
I am dumping varchar(40) column from a OLE DB Source to Excel file but it is failing due this error
[Excel Destination [239]] Error: Column "ItemDescription" cannot convert between unicode and non-unicode string data types.
How can I resolve this issue?
Thanks

I have looked far and wide and have not found anything that works to allow me to resolve this issue.
I am moving data from DB2 using the MS OLEDB Provider for DB2. The OLEDB source sees the column of data as DT_TEXT. I setup a destination to SQL Server 2005 and everything looks good until I try and run the package.
I get the error:
[OLE DB Source [277]] Error: An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80040E21. An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft DB2 OLE DB Provider" Hresult: 0x80040E21 Description: "Multiple-step OLE DB operation generated errors. Check each OLE DB status value, if available. No work was done.".
[OLE DB Source [277]] Error: Failed to retrieve long data for column "LIST_DATA_RCVD".
[OLE DB Source [277]] Error: There was an error with output column "LIST_DATA_RCVD" (324) on output "OLE DB Source Output" (287). The column status returned was: "DBSTATUS_UNAVAILABLE".
[OLE DB Source [277]] Error: The "output column "LIST_DATA_RCVD" (324)" failed because error code 0xC0209071 occurred, and the error row disposition on "output column "LIST_DATA_RCVD" (324)" specifies failure on error. An error occurred on the specified object of the specified component.
[DTS.Pipeline] Error: The PrimeOutput method on component "OLE DB Source" (277) returned error code 0xC0209029. The component returned a failure code when the pipeline engine called PrimeOutput(). The meaning of the failure code is defined by the component, but the error is fatal and the pipeline stopped executing.
Any suggestions on how I can get the large string data in the varchar column in DB2 into the varchar(max) column in SQL Server 2005?

I am working on an OLAP modeled database.
I have a Lookup Transformation that matches the natural key of a dimension member and returns the dimension key for that member (surrogate key pipeline stuff).
I am using an OLE DB Command as the Error flow of the Lookup Transformation to insert an "Inferred Member" (new row) into a dimension table if the Lookup fails.
The OLE DB Command calls a stored procedure (dbo.InsertNewDimensionMember) that inserts the new member and returns the key of the new member (using scope_identity) as an output.
What is the syntax in the SQL Command line of the OLE DB Command Transformation to set the output of the stored procedure as an Output Column?
I know that I can 1) add a second Lookup with "Enable memory restriction" on (no caching) in the Success data flow after the OLE DB Command, 2) find the newly inserted member, and 3) Union both Lookup results together, but this is a large dimension table (several million rows) and searching for the newly inserted dimension member seems excessive, especially since I have the ID I want returned as output from the stored procedure that inserted it.
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

Is there any set option with which, the text output from select statement can be changed. A select of any varchar field defaults to 256 characters. If I define a field of varchar(1024), how can I get an output representing all the 1024 characters. Thanks

Hi Guys
I am wondering if you could spare some time and help me out with this puzzle.
I am new to this stuff so please take it easy on me.
I’m trying to create procedure which will take 2 input parameters and give me 1 back.
Originally there will be more outputs but for this training exercise 1 should do.
There are 2 tables as per diagram below and what I’m trying to do is
Verify username & password and pull out user group_name.
|---------------| |-----------------------|
| TBL_USERS | |TBL_USER_GROUPS|
|---------------| |-----------------------|
| USERNAME | /|GROUP_ID |
| PASSWORD | / |GROUP_NAME |
| GROUP_ID |< | |
|---------------| |-----------------------|
For my proc. I am using some ideas from this and some other sites, but obviously i've done something wrong.
'====================================================
ALTER PROCEDURE dbo.try01
(
@UserName varchar(50),
@Password varchar(50),
@Group varchar Output
)
AS
SET NOCOUNT ON;
SELECT TBL_USERS.USERNAME, TBL_USERS.PASSWORD,@Group = TBL_USER_GROUPS.GROUP_NAME,
TBL_USERS.USER_ID, TBL_USER_GROUPS.GROUP_ID
FROM TBL_USERS INNER JOIN TBL_USER_GROUPS
ON TBL_USERS.GROUP_ID = TBL_USER_GROUPS.GROUP_ID
WHERE (TBL_USERS.USERNAME = @UserName)
AND (TBL_USERS.PASSWORD = @Password)
'====================================================
and this is what i'm getting in VS.Net while trying to save.
'====================================================
ADO error: A select statement that assigns a value to variable must
not be combined with data-retrieval operation.
'====================================================
I did not see any samples on the net using ‘varchar’ as OUTPUT usually they where all ‘int’s. Could that be the problem?
Please help.

hi all, I'm after a way to produce a single-lined output of a char/varchar string replicated over 8000 times.
basically I've been given a task to create a stored procedure which can accept any integer to replicate a string X times.
From what I've read the replicate() fn will covert to varchar of max 8000 bytes.
I've thought about creating a UDF to accept the varchar and int and run a loop to keep outputting but 'print' will pass an endline to the buffer which is no good for my loop.
Any help would be great on this. Thanks.

I am using version 9.00.2047.00 SP1 of Visual Studio 2005.
Using ADO.NET, I have been unable to get the Execute SQL task to successfully return the value of an output parameter defined as varchar or nvarchar when the value is null. No other data types seem to have this problem, including the sql_variant data type.
Here is the stored procedure I am calling:
create proc spx
@in int = null output,
@vc nvarchar(10) = null output,
@dt datetime = null output
as
select
@in = null,
@vc = null,
@dt = null
return
The variables to which the three output parameters return their values have a data type of Object. The task runs fine when the integer or datetime parameters are used, and the variables can be identified as null using IsDBNull. But as soon as the nvarchar (or varchar) parameter is included, the task fails with this message:
"The incoming tabular data stream (TDS) remote procedure call (RPC) protocol stream is incorrect. Parameter 1 ("@vc"): Data type 0xE7 has an invalid data length or metadata length."
I have seen a couple of postings that sound similar to this problem, but so far I have found no resolution. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Ron Rice

I have following XQuery:
declare @xmldoc as xml
select @xmldoc = '<Text>This is firstline<Break />This is second line<Break />This is third line</Text>'
select @xmldoc.value('(/Text)[1]','varchar(max)')Result is: "This is firstlineThis is second lineThis is third line"
My problem is, that the <Break /> tags within the text are removed in the conversion to varchar. How to preserve the such tags in the varchar output? Or to get the <Break /> tags "translated" to e.g. CHAR(10)?

Can't seem to get my head around this: I'm looking for a way to select only those varchar(10) values that soley consist of numbers. Leading spaces are allowed.
I tried using isnumeric, but it also allows those with periods, comma's etc.
Also tried using like, but the length of the varchar column varies too much to do a like '[0-9][0-9]....'.
As a solution I currently do a combo of isnumeric, not like '%.%', not like '%,%' etc. I need to do a conversion to an int to join another table, but the convert still fails. Not sure where and why.
I'm thinking there should be a better way than create a hughe list of "not like " but it looks like I'm in the woods here...

Is there a preferred way to order a varchar column numerically (for thosethat are numeric), then alphanumerically for all others?I've tried:ORDER BY CASE WHEN IsNumeric(<column_name>) = 1 THEN CONVERT(Float,<column_name>) ELSE 999999999 END;andORDER BY CASE WHEN IsNumeric(<column_name>) = 1 THEN 0 ELSE 1 END, CASE WHENIsNumeric(<column_name>) = 1 THEN CONVERT(Float, <column_name>) ELSE 999999END, <column_name>;Neither of these however give the desired results.Any ideas?Thanks,Frank

Hi all,
I'm new at this SSIS but have been able to successfully create some simple packages. My situation is that at work we use a column to describe a status of applications. However, this makes for hellacious query because some of those statuses inherintly were one or more statuses previously. Example
Admit = Admit
Accept = Admit then Accept
Withdraw Accept = Admit, Accept, then Withdraw
Decline = Admit then Decline
As you can see inherintly those were all admits at one point. So what I'd like to do is instead of having long queries for example to get all my "Admits", I'd rather query another table that has the following columns as bits:
Admit
Accept
Withdraw
That way I can query the admit column and get all my admits. How can I use SSIS to transform my "Decision" column into those bit columns?
Thanks for any help or suggestions you have.

Now i want to decrease the size of those columns and to see the row size would be around 8k Bytes.If i do this now, does it affect the table performance much....Infact can i do this as there is lot of data (almost 2 million rows) in the table.If it is possible is there anything to be taken care before changing the column lenghts.

I have a table . It has a nullable column called AccountNumber, whichis of varchar type. The AccountNumber is alpha-numeric. I want to takedata from this table and process it for my application. Before doingthat I would like to filter out duplicate AccountNumbers. I get most ofthe duplicates filtered out by using this query:select * from customerswhere AccountNumber NOT IN (select AccountNumber from customers whereAccountNumber <> '' group by AccountNumber having count(AccountNumber)[color=blue]> 1)[/color]But there are few duplicate entries where the actual AccountNumber issame, but there is a trailing space in first one, and hence thisduplicate records are not getting filtered out. e.g"abc123<white-space>" and "abc123" are considered two different entriesby above query.I ran a query like :update customers set AccountNumber = LTRIM(RTRIM(AccountNumber)But even after this query, the trailing space remains, and I am notable to filter out those entries.Am I missing anything here?
