Overcoming The Openquery 8000 Char Limit && Problem With Using Call Mystoredproc() In Open Query
Oct 10, 2007
Does anyone know why this statement would fail? I have created my own assembly which is on the server and when i run the mdx query call myassembly.mystoredproc() it returns data, but now when I use call myassembly.mystoredproc() it returns an error.
using an mdx query this works fine
call AsmTest.Asm.Analysis.TestClass.NameMe()
When using openquery i get an error
select * from openquery(NV, 'call AsmTest.Asm.Analysis.TestClass.NameMe()' )
OLE DB provider "MSOLAP.3" for linked server "NV" returned message "Prepare is not safe during execution of the NameMe stored procedure.".
Msg 7321, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
An error occurred while preparing the query "call AsmTest.Asm.Analysis.TestClass.NameMe()" for execution against OLE DB provider "MSOLAP.3" for linked server "NV".

I am so frustrated, I have upsized a data base from access to sql 6.5 and now had to clip data to fit into a 255 field? I have been looking for weeks to find a solution for this.
I am writing a discussion board very much like this one and need the message text to hold more than 255 chars. I have tried to create a table with a blob and text, The text will not allow me to specify the size when creating from a script (ASP) using create table. If I dont specify a size, it creates it as 16?
Been working on this for several weeks and cannot locate anyone that can answer this question, I want to create a column that will hold more than 255 chars.
IS there something in Sql 6.5 that I need to set to allow more than 255 on a text field? What am I doing wrong?
Please respond. Thank you.

We have a requirement to call a Web Service method from SSIS where the method accepts a single parameter that is derived from a database recordset and can exceed 4k characters. From the little we know about the Web Service task it is limited to only accepting direct input and variables. Does anyone have any suggestions to overcoming this issue? Any detailed information in possibly calling the Web Service from script or using an object variable would be extremely appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi,
I have a MDX query which is of an aprox length of 10000 characters. I
have to execute the query from within the stored procedure in sql. To
run this query I use the openrowset method.
If the length of my query is less than 8000 characters my query
executes perfectly, but the moment it exceeds 8000 characters it stop
working. Please suggest a solution for the same.
Sample Code:
declare @mdxqry varchar(8000)
declare @SearchCond varchar(8000)
set @SearchCond = @SearchCond + '
[ProductsAccounts].CurrentMember.properties("AS Date") <= "' + @TDate
+ '" '
set @mdxqry = '''WITH ' +
'MEMBER [Measures].[Difference] as ''''[Measures].[Expected Interest
Amount] - [Measures].[Adjusted Interest]'''' ' +
'MEMBER [Measures].[Loan Closed within Report Period] as ' +
'''''iif(cdate([ProductsAccounts].CurrentMember.properties("Closed
Date")) < cdate("' + @ToDate + '"), "Yes", "No")''''' +
'MEMBER [Measures].[ClosedBeforeLastInstallment] as
''''iif([Measures].[Loan Closed Before Last Instal]=1, "Yes", "No")''''
' +
'SELECT ' +
'{[Measures].[Expected Interest Amount], [Measures].[Adjusted
Interest], [Measures].[Difference], ' +
'[Measures].[Zero Interest Transactions],
[Measures].[ClosedBeforeLastInstallment], ' +
'[Measures].[Loan Closed within Report Period]} ON 0, '
set @mdxqry = @mdxqry +
'{Filter([ProductsAccounts].[Account Id].Members, (' + @SearchCond +
'))} on 2, ' +
@BranchFilter +
'FROM InterestAnalysis'''
set @mdxqry = 'SELECT a.* FROM
OpenRowset(''MSOLAP'',''DATASOURCE="SERVERNAME"; Initial
Catalog="DATABASENAME";'',' + @mdxqry + ') as a'
exec(@mdxqry)
I have already tried splitting my query into smalled chunks and
executing it, but still I face the same problem.
This is how I have Done it:
declare @mdxqry1 varchar(8000)
declare @mdxqry2 varchar(8000)
declare @SearchCond varchar(8000)
set @SearchCond = @SearchCond + '
[ProductsAccounts].CurrentMember.properties("AS Date") <= "' + @TDate
+ '" '
set @mdxqry1 = '''WITH ' +
'MEMBER [Measures].[Difference] as ''''[Measures].[Expected Interest
Amount] - [Measures].[Adjusted Interest]'''' ' +
'MEMBER [Measures].[Loan Closed within Report Period] as ' +
'''''iif(cdate([ProductsAccounts].CurrentMember.properties("Closed
Date")) < cdate("' + @ToDate + '"), "Yes", "No")''''' +
'MEMBER [Measures].[ClosedBeforeLastInstallment] as
''''iif([Measures].[Loan Closed Before Last Instal]=1, "Yes", "No")''''
'
set @mdxqry2 = 'SELECT ' +
'{[Measures].[Expected Interest Amount], [Measures].[Adjusted
Interest], [Measures].[Difference], ' +
'[Measures].[Zero Interest Transactions],
[Measures].[ClosedBeforeLastInstallment], ' +
'[Measures].[Loan Closed within Report Period]} ON 0, '
set @mdxqry2 = @mdxqry2 +
'{Filter([ProductsAccounts].[Account Id].Members, (' + @SearchCond +
'))} on 2, ' +
@BranchFilter +
'FROM InterestAnalysis'''
set @mdxqry2 = 'SELECT a.* FROM
OpenRowset(''MSOLAP'',''DATASOURCE="SERVERNAME"; Initial

exec(@mdxqry1 + @mdxqry2)
Thanks in Advance

What I am trying to do is look at a 30 day history of calls that were closed and find (in hours) how long the work orders were open. My major problem is working with dates, the results I'm getting appear to be inaccurate. My Code is as follows:
Code:
SELECT C.Priority, MIN(CONVERT([INT], DATEPART(hh, T1.CalcDate), 120)) AS Minimum, MAX(CONVERT([INT], DATEPART(hh, T1.CalcDate), 120))
AS Maximum
FROM HEAT.dbo.CallLog C, HEAT.dbo.Profile P,
(SELECT CallID, CONVERT(datetime, ClosedDate + ' ' + ClosedTime, 120) - CONVERT(datetime, RecvdDate + ' ' + RecvdTime, 120)
AS CalcDate
FROM HEAT.dbo.CallLog C1
WHERE (CONVERT(datetime, CONVERT([INT], GETDATE(), 120) - 30, 120) >= ClosedDate)) T1
WHERE C.CustID = P.CustID AND C.CallID = T1.CallID AND (C.CallStatus = 'Closed') AND (P.CustType <> 'services') AND (P.PrimarySupportGroupID = 'CTS') AND
(C.Priority IN ('1', 'E1', 'E2')) AND (CONVERT([INT], T1.CalcDate, 1) >= 0)
GROUP BY C.Priority
ORDER BY C.Priority
If anyone could give me any suggestions or help me out I would greatly appreciate it. The results are used to draw a bar chart of the information.
Thank you

Here is my experience with installing MSDE.
I'm leaning C# and ASP.NET at the same time using the book "Microsoft ASP.NET Programming with Microsoft Visual C# .NET Step by Step". In Appendix C, P 577, it says to locate setup.exe under …Microsoft Visual Studio .NETSetupMSDE and "run setup.exe to install MSDE."
This was my first mistake, because there are more recent versions available with security patches (for the slammer virus). I have been unable to successfully update the old version. The install program for MSDE has got to be a hackers delight because only a hacker can make it work. I decided to uninstall the old version of MSDE 2000 and install the latest download from the MSDN website. The new version would get most of the files installed and then rollback the install, removing all the files. When I tried to reinstall the old version, it did the same thing. At least the new version requires a password parameter for the sa user. The bad news is that the new password is ignored. Since I already installed the first version with a blank sa password by running setup.exe with no parameters the password will remain blank until I change it using the user friendly osql command line utility. More about osql later…
Here is how I solved the rollback problem:
I first (after many hours trying to modify the registry to clean up the mess Windows uninstaller left there) used the command line switch /L*V <your logfile name> to get a verbose log file. I noticed a property listed called "Disablerollback" this was set to 0. So, I ran setup on the command line as below (all one line):
>setup DisableRollback=1 /L*V "C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio .NETSetupMSDEsetupbat.log" SAPWD="ignored password"
The setup still failed, but its tracks were preserved for XP to complain about on system restart.
I then restarted the system and logged in. XP threw an error dialog box with the message "Your server installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with (unknown package ID)…" I clicked OK and waited a few extra minutes for XP to finish logging me in.
After logging in, I closed the Service Manger from the taskbar notification area. I then deleted the folders 80, and MSSQL (name of default instance) from the target install directory. Finally, I ran setup.exe again as shown:
>setup /L*V "C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio .NETSetupMSDEsetupgood.log" SAPWD="ignored password"
This time, after restarting, my old MSDE worked. This approach seems to only work with the first old version of MSDE that was shipped with Visual Studio .NET. I still have yet to figure out how to upgrade and get MSDE to work again.
Once you get MSDE to work, here are some tips on how to administer it using the osql command tool.
To change the sa password do the following (use null for a blank password):
>osql -U sa
Password:
1> sp-password @old=null, @new='newpassword', @loginame='sa'
2> go
Password has been changed
3> quit
On page 113 of the authors' first attempt with the book "Microsoft ASP.NET Programming…", the hacks wrote:
Set up the SQL Server session state database by running the InstallSQLState.sql batch (located in …) against the SQL Server you plan to use. (For more information about running batch statements, check with your database administrator or the SQL Server Books Online.)
Here is how to do it with osql:
> osql -S MSSQLSERVER -U sa -i InstallSQLState.sql
For less characters than it took to write the last parenthetical sentence, they could have just given the same example I supplied here.
If you want a graphical interface to administer you MSDE server, try downloading the small package for "Microsoft SQL Web Data Administrator" from Microsoft's website. This even comes with a modern installer. Here are some tips on how to connect to your locally installed MSDE using this utility:
The main dialog just requires that you click the start button. A login page comes up. To log in as sa, do the following:
? Click the "SQL Login" radio button.
? Under "Please enter a SQL Server name:" fill in the following text boxes:
? Username: sa
? Password: [your password | leave blank if no password is set]
? Server: (local)
This should get you to the server tools page. Click "Security", then Logins. Now, on the Logins page, you can add new users. If you install MSDE for mixed mode, you can add "Windows Integrated" user accounts. This best since you won't have to put passwords in your code to allow database access to these users. To add a user, click on "Create New Login". Set Authentication Method to "Windows Integrated" in the combo box. For Login Name you need to use the form <computername><username> . For example, "MSSQLServerDan".
If you did like I did, and installed MSDE in SQL login mode only, you can do the following registry hack to change it to mixed authentication mode:
1. Locate either of the following subkeys (depending on whether you installed MSDE as the default MSDE instance or as a named instance:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftMSSqlserverMSSqlServer
-or-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL Server<Instance Name>MSSQLServer
2. In the right-pane, double-click the LoginMode subkey.
3. In the DWORD Editor dialog box, set the value of this subkey to 1. Make sure that the Hex option is selected, and then click OK.
4. Restart the MSSQLSERVER and the SQLSERVERAgent services for this change to take effect.

Hello,
how can I use the following statement with OPENQERY syntax:
SELECT 'hello world' FROM mytable
Maybe I have to transform quite a few and complex SQL-statements to the OPENQUERY syntax. Obviously I have problems with single quotes
SELECT * FROM OPENQUERY(LINKEDSERVER, 'select 'hello world' from mytable')
quotename('hello world', '''') does not help because this will create 'hello world' instead of hello world (w/o quotes).
How can I transform my SQL-statements with quotes to Openquery syntax?

I have been working on a pretty ugly stored procedure recently, while debugging I added a char(10) to the end of each line of the SQL query so I could copy it to query analyzer(QA) and debug the SQL syntax output from of the stored procedure.
It had no effect on the stored procedure working, but when I copied the query to QA it got the error below, so I removed them all and added them in one line at a time to find the problem.
--Server: Msg 170, Level 15, State 1, Line 3
--Line 3: Incorrect syntax near ','.
Below are the 2 querys, the only difference is the Char(10) between Amt6 and Amt7!
http://www.rakbiz.com/download/broken.txt
http://www.rakbiz.com/download/working.txt
I also tried char(13) with same results.
any ideas why this is happening or how to add line breaks for readability without this problem?
Thanks for your help!

Hi Guys,
I've got a stored proc used for order generation which runs long sometimes when called from within our app. A normal run will complete within 20s, a long run will get terminated by the app at the 6 minute mark.
When it runs long once, repeated attempts will also do so until I execute the same query the app did, but from within Query Analyzer. At which time the problem will disappear for a day or two. The app connects to the SQL Server 200 SP4 database using ADO.
I suspected statistics might be at fault here but have tried both "UPDATE STATISTICS table WITH FULLSCAN" and "DBCC DBREINDEX('table') to no avail. This issue has occurred and been worked around in this manner a few dozen times.
Any idea what might be going on here?

What is the reason everything here executes except the very last "INSERT INTO forums_UsersInRoles VALUES ((@@identity),11) "?
IF I change the order of the last two queries it is the other one (now last) that is not executed. Is there a limit to how many you can run at a time?

I am working with Excel, then within Excel I am using MS Query to query a database. I am trying to use the CAST function on a field with numbers (1,2 or 3 digits) so I can convert it to a text value with three digits, i.e. 1 would read 001, 12 would read 012, etc.
I am not using CAST in the design grid. Is this even possible?
I am modifying the underlying SQL code. Here is the line that is giving me trouble:
CAST(GL02GLF.GLF_SEQ_NUM as CHAR(3)) as “Sequence”

Hello SQL gurus!I am trying to write a query that will return a set of continguous rowsfrom a table, and limit the number of rows returned when a maximumtotal has been reached by adding a value in one of the columns. For example, the two columns below represent 2 columns in a table.a 2b 2c 2d 3e 4f 5g 5I want to start at, say "c", and return all the rows after it as longas the sum of the numbers in column 2 (starting at "c") don't exceed10. The result I'm after would be thusc 2d 3e 4....because 2 + 3 + 4 = 9 < 10Any ideas? Many thanks.

Message:
Hi,
Suppose i execute a query,
Select * from emp,
I get 100 rows of result, i want to write a sql query similar to the one available in MySql database where in i can specify the starting row and number of rows of records i want,
something like,
select * from emp LIMIT 10,20
I want all the records from the 10th row to the 20th row.
This would be helpful for me to do paging in the front end , where is i can navigate to the next previous buttons and fetch the corresponding records.
I want to do something like in google, previous next screens.
So I am trying to limit the number of rows fetched from a query.
somethin like,
select * from emp where startRowNum=10 and NoOfRecords = 20
so that i can get rows from 10 to 30.
Has any1 done this, plz let me know.
Cheers,
Prashant.

Yes, I do know what this means and why the error is thrown but this is not my question.
I have two servers that are both running Windows Server 2003 and SQL Server 200 SP3. Below are the results from both servers using @@version
Sever 1 (BB)
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 - 8.00.760 (Intel X86)
Dec 17 2002 14:22:05
Copyright (c) 1988-2003 Microsoft Corporation
Developer Edition on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 1)
Server 2 (Genesis)
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 - 8.00.760 (Intel X86)
Dec 17 2002 14:22:05
Copyright (c) 1988-2003 Microsoft Corporation
Developer Edition on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 1)
These servers are identical or so it seems. I've got a real ugly query that uses views and a derived table to get results. The problem is the 256 limit message only comes up on one server and on the other (Genesis) the query runs fine. I get the error though it reads a 260 limit on a box with SP4 applied. I've also run the query on a box that is Windows 2003, sql2k and sp4 and the query runs but not on a similar server here. This is all very odd. Please note that the database structure, views, etc are all exactly the same as far as I know.
Any suggestions? There seems to be no pattern between versions of Windows and/or SP levels.

I was working on the SSRS Report Designer and was trying to copy and paste a huge SQL query from SQL Management Studio (like I always do) to the dataset window.
This method usually works, but for this extremely long SQL query with nested SELECTs and JOINs, it seems as though the Report Designer dataset query window limits the number of characters including carriage returns I can input in it.
When I paste my SQL query from SQL Management Studio, it seems to paste only three quarters of the query, and thereafter I am not able to manually key in anything else or even make a line feed in the dataset query window.
Is there a limit to the number of characters I can key in here ? If so, is there any workarounds or configurations I can try ?

I am not sure about the architecture of the Issue Tracker and hence not sure if it applies here. But I will post in any case and wait for users on this forums comments as well.
===========Earlier post==================
This question is regarding the architecture of TimeEntry.
In some programs it builds an arrayList for Master-detail type of relationship and when user is ready to save it by clicking 'submit' it build a variable with pipe delimited fields.
This is then passed to a sql query.
This to me does not seem to be an efficient manner. Because the max character is 1500 chars as parameter to SQL query.
I was wondering if instead I could store it as an XML and then use the XML to import in to SQL.
Any ideas is greatly appreciated, I am running in to problems where my variable construct does increase to more than 1500 chars. Any thoughts are much appreciated in this regards.

MillenniumIte.

I am a newbie to SQL Server.
I have a problem, in filtering the records returned by a query.
I have a table which contains 1 million records, it has a user defined primary key which is of character type.
The problem is i need to filter the output of a select query on the table based on two parameters i send to that query.
The first parameter will be the starting row number and the second one is the ending row number.
I need a procedure to do this.
For Eg:
MyProc_GetRowsFromBigTable(startRowNo,endRowNo) should get me only the rows in the specified range.
Thanks in advance,

Hello Guys,
I have a question that seems easy but I can not figure out...
Premise:
Have Custom code that fixes Divide by Zero Errors in SSRS. I have added the code to the Custom Code area in Report Properties correctly.
I have a Dataset that has a calculation for a column within a select statement
Query Pseudocode:
select ...[FRC%]=convert(decimal(13,2),sum(cost))/convert(decimal(13,2),sum(income))...
,year
from
(subquery"blah" )
Union
(Subquery"blah")
Custom Code:
Public Function SafeDiv(ByVal numerator as Double, ByVal denominator as Double) as Double
if denominator = 0 then
return 0
else
return numerator/denominator
end if
End Function
How To use:
If you have a field that does division and you need to eliminate the divide by zero error that occurs with SSRS then type =code.SafeDiv(first, second) in the field.
Problem:
How do I add this code reference in the following dataset select statement
select ...[FRC%]=convert(decimal(13,2),sum(cost))/convert(decimal(13,2),sum(income))...
,year
from
(subquery"blah" )
Union
(Subquery"blah") table1
I tried to do this:
from this:
[FRC%]=convert(decimal(13,2),sum(cost))/convert(decimal(13,2),sum(income)) ...
to this
[FRC%]=code.Safediv(convert(decimal(13,2),sum(cost)),convert(decimal(13,2),sum(income))) ...
But it did not work...gave me this error:

Help!
P.S.
this is a Matrix report and this select statement is within one of the datasets that fill a matrix.

Hi,I have successfully set and used a linked server to query ADSI.Since this question also concerns MSSQLServer, I've cross posted it --I hope this is not a breach of etiquette.I have successly created a view based on the linked server.Unfortunately, it only shows 1000 records, and there does not seem tobe any way to set the Page Size.I found the following:http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;en-us;243281Which seems to imply that the default can be set by changing registrykey: "HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftWind owsDirectoryUI"I have set this key, and also set it for the user account under whichMSSQLServer runs. The value persists after a reboot. The Domain Grouppolicy sets the default to 15000.This behaviour is not restricted to the linked server. If I use thescript found here:http://hacks.oreilly.com/pub/h/1121 I can access morethan 1000 records, but only if I set the "Page Size" property. If Icomment it out to let the default hold, it is 1000.It must be settable SOMEWHERE or the whole linked server thing is ofvery limited use.At present, the best solution I've been able to come up with is to usethe above script modified to run as a DTS package. Yuck.TIA,BM
