Package Execution Fails In Windows Service But Runs Fine As A Windows Application.
Jun 23, 2006
I am attempting to write a Windows service that watches a database for uploaded files to import. When a new file is found, the corresponding SSIS package is run from the file system with variables passed through. I started development as a Windows app and copied the functionality to a service.
The app runs fine. The service does not. I get a "Failure" each time a package is executed. Everything is identical behind the scenes with the obvious exceptions that OnStart and OnStop handlers are buttons in the app. I added a script task at the beginning of one of the SSIS packages to notify me that it is even running at all. It doesn't even hit that initial task.
Again, the app will run all packages just fine. The data is imported and the results return as "Success."
The following is the code executing the package. Any help is appreciated. I've been banging my head on this one for a few days now. (Is there a tag to format a code sample?)
Dim pkgLocation As String
Dim pkg As New Package
Dim app As New Application
Dim pkgResults As DTSExecResult
I have a 7 step SSIS package that manipulates some data on a DB2 database. The package executes perfectly in Business Intelligence Development Studio. I save the package to my SSIS store and then point my scheduled task to it and it fails after about 9 seconds everytime. I have an identical job that works with a different DB2 database that works without any problem. The only difference is the database it's pointing to.
The package is executing as the same user who created it, which has sysadmin to both the SSIS store and the SQL instance the package is executing on. When I saved the package I selected "Rely on server storage roles for access control" for the protection level.
This one is driving me crazy, can't figure it out. Any idea's?
I have created an SSIS package which, as its 2nd step, picks up a .dbf table and does a Data Flow Task of putting the .dbf table into a SQL Server 2005 table (which was just truncated in Step 1).
The Connection Manager that works on the .dbf table is Native OLE DBMicrosoft Jet 4.0 OLE DB Provider.
The entire SSIS package runs perfectly when i run it from my development environment.
I then assigned this Package to a SQL Server 2005 Job. The entire package is the sole step of the job.
But when I run the SQL Job, the Job fails immediately on Step 2.
Here is the error message in View History of the SQL Job:

I was facing some issue on MP. Yesterday I changed the SQL services to use the local admin account. That didn't help my MP issue. But it may have created another issue. When I run the package manually/locally it runs fine. I'm currently writing a windows service which will generate XML documents for FTP upload. When running the service the goal is to get records from a stored procedure, then generate the XML documents.
When running the service (lokal service account) the connection fails; instead of using the supplied connection string, it defaults to the LocalService account. How can this be solved?
Hi, i tried to install SQL Server 2000 Developer and MSDE the whole day on my Windows XP SP2. MDAC is the latest, that come with WinXP SP2 (2.81). The installation fails at the end after 100% complete.
It says: Translated: "the setup programm starts the server and installs the configuration you chose..." ("das setup-programm startet den server und installiert die von ihnen gewählte konfiguration...")
then it takes some time and the failure appears, saying: "the setup programm could not configure the server. you can find more information in the server-failure-log files and in "C:windowssqlstp.log."
HI, Recently i had to maintain few SSIS packages. One of the packages keeps running indefinitely to monitor a folder for new files using FileSystemWatcher. Once new file is arrived, it simply renames file and calls another package for further processing. My first impression was that windows service might be a better choice for such functionality.
Any idea about these two approaches to implement this functionality i.e Continuously running a package using indefinite loop as compared to a windows service.
I have an issue where the DBAs have informed my group that they need to get to a model where an SSIS package which presently needs Admin perms on a box in order to write to the Windows Application Log, no longer needs those perms to write to the log.
I am new to SSIS packages, though familiar with DTS packages (and ETL), so I'm wondering if their concerns (1) can be verified; and (2) if so, is there a better way to allow the package to write to the log without Admin perms (on the box). At the moment, the preference would be to do so without using .Net, in an effort to keep the implementation simple.
Scenario: A single package is scheduled to run at a predetermined time. Once complete it writes to the Windows Application Log.
I'm developing a Windows Service to watch for an e-mail and then launch a package. It extracts some parameters from the e-mail that I then need to pass to the package. What is the best way to launch the package from the service? Should I run it in a new thread? I don't want the service to have to wait for the package to complete. How would I pass the parameters? Should I use dtexec? If the service fails or is stopped and the package is still running, it would terminate the package also, correct? Any way to avoid that? Thanks.
I have an SSIS package created from a SQL 2000 DTS using the Migration Wizard. The package imports data from a MySQL database to a SQL 2005 64-bit database running on 64-bit windows server 2003. The package runs fine when executed from SQL Server Management Studio but when I schedule it as a job it fails with:
Executed as user: [the domain admin account]. The package execution failed. The step failed.
I've tried a lot of different ways to make this work including creating a new SSIS package. Again, the package ran fine except when it was scheduled as a job.
I'm at a bit of a loss. I've written a package that has about a dozen data flow tasks and each one loads data from text files into tables in a db. It's possible that some of the fields in the text files may have data that would need to be truncated upon insert into the db.
In the data flows, I've set the fields in the data sources I know this could happen to to ignore truncation errors. When I run this within BI Studio, everything works fine. I then loaded the package into the SSIS store on the db server and if I attempt to run it from the SSIS store or if a job executes it, the package appears to be failing because of these truncation errors that I've told it to ignore.
When running an integration services package from a windows service I get the "Object ... has been disconnected or does not exist at the server." exception after aproximately six minutes of execution.
This is *not* my windows service failing. I can loop indefinately while tracing to a log file within the service and it will run forever. While calling the mypackage.execute(...) method however, after six minutes (give or take) the exception is thrown...
my code looks something like this: <code> dim foo as Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Application mypackage = foo..LoadPackage(strimportPkgFilename, pkgevents) results = myPackage.Execute(Nothing, Nothing, pkgevents, Nothing, Nothing) </code>
<error> A first chance exception of type 'System.Runtime.Remoting.RemotingException' occurred in mscorlib.dll Exception in: frmMyForm.DoImports Message: Object '/b76f98a0_5bd9_49d8_a524_eeb49d55b303/bqbhkjnaofq_ifr_cwz+srid_1.rem' has been disconnected or does not exist at the server. </error>
oddly, this same code works perfectly if I run it within a windows form application no matter how long it takes.
It also runs fine if the package can complete in under six minutes.
Running eval. edition of Sql Server Standard 2005. "Insufficient product level" error is thrown during validation phase of an OleDBCommand data flow task. This task type is not licensed in Sql Server 2005 standard? The component runs a very simple sql update statement against a one row table in Sql Server 2005.
If it works from BIDS, should it not work from dtexec.exe on the same box?
Does dtexec run under the security context of the logged in user?
I have an SSIS package that runs fine through command pormpt although when I try to run it from a SQL Servr Agent Job CmdExec step it bombs out. Please help this has me stumped...the SSIS package uses an XML connection string so certain key settings such as connection strings and email info can be changed easily. Currently this is all on the same machine. I have not moved it beyond where I am developing.
On the command line I am using the following command...

Hey, I've a few jobs which call SSIS packages. If I run the SSIS package, it runs fine but if I try to run the job which calls this package, it fails. Can someone help me troubleshoot this issue? None of my jobs that call an SSIS package work. All of them fail.
I'm trying to run a job which moves data from one machine to another. I can manually execute the package successfully, but the job always fails. I get the dreaded error message 18456, "login failis for user "". I have double checked the logins for both machines,(sql server agent AND the sql server authentication). Also, I can run a select statement (from server_ to server_2) successfully from query analyzer i.e.
Select * from <linked_server_name>.<database>.<database_owner>.<table_name>
however, if I run this query from server_2 to server_1 I get the failed login message similar to the error message found in the job history. Since both servers accept nt logins, where is my problem? They are both set up as linked servers, and they are both mssql oledb. Any suggestions will be appreciated! thanks
Like the name says, I'm trying hard, but I'm obviously missing something. Okay, I'm new to SSIS. I'm trying to write a job that deletes some Excel files on the server, copies some Excel files from a Sharepoint instance to the location where the deleted files were, runs an executable to manipulate those files, and then imports them to my SS instance.
the package runs fine when I run it from Managment Studio after installing it on the server. The 'execute task' fails when I run the job containing the package. After creating a proxy to have the SQL Server agent Service run with appropriate permissions, I thought I would have been rid of permissions issues (I gave the proxy way too much permission in an effort to narrow in on my issue), but I could still be missing something.
The job doesn't get into the package enough to even start writing to my log file, and all I get in the job history is the very cryptic 'DTExec: The package execution returned DTSER_FAILURE (1) ' error. If anyone has ideas, I would greatly appreciate being shown the error of my ways.
I am looking at implementing some sort of throttling whereby "expensive" reports are setup as Subscriptions (and hence are run by the Windows Service), while all other requests go the Web Service.
My question is:
Do the two systems share any underlying systems? I understand (of course) that they use the same DB, etc. etc. However, I can't quite tell whether there is an underlying engine that is a common base or if they really just spin up different instances of the same objects and essentially each host the application separately?
I try to make SSSIS packages made on my pc accesible to an other user of SSIS (both running on Windows 2000). The packages are on a shared drive in our LAN.. Some configurationfiles are use to configure the Oracle DBconnection. The same files are on the same location on both PC's
The other user can open and run the packages but from the moment the lookup buffers are loaded, we get the following errors:

I am developing a windows application that will run on every client station. This application will refer to a database located on a server station. Can I use MSDE for such application and if so how many remote concurrent connection can be open simultaneously?
I am working on a windows application (C#) that utilizes ODBC to acces paradox tables (works fine thought this would be the problem database) and a WinMobile database(.sdf) in order to sync table records. What I need to do is copy the .sdf file from the winmobile device then access it with this application to check for changed records on the PC and in the mobile database then copy it back to the mobile device via RAPI.
The program compiles fine but when I try to run the application I get this error. Unable to load DLL 'sqlceme30.dll': The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E) .
I have already copied the System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll to my projects bin folder and then added a reference to it in the projects Reference dialog. These were also copied to the bin folder of the project

On PC : Access application + Access DB On PocketPC : Embedded Visual Basic 3.0 application + PocketAccess DB
I synchronise my DBs through ActivSync.
It runs good before Windows Mobile 5.
My customers asked me for new PocketPC with this application, so I bought some new PocketPCs : but as I see, syncronisation with Access is no more supported.
So what are my solutions ?
My customer wait for there PocketPC, so I need a quick solution, I don't want to rewrite all my application now. My application run before WM5, so now I don't want to have to pay for a Visual Studio .Net, some SQL Server, etc ....
Please, what are the solutions that won't cost me more than the time that have already lost with this new Windows Mobile 5 ?
Is there a way to control some of the windows application log settings from within the logging process of a package. Specifically the 'source' parameter which comes out as 'SQLISPackage' which i'd like to be the actual name of the package which wrote to the log, and similarly 'Category' which comes out as 'none' and I'd prefer to assign something more meaniful ?
I had installed SQL Server 2005 developer on my machine (Vista 64-bit) prior to installing Visual Studio 2005. When I installed VS, I used the default installation, which installed SQL Server Express. Soon thereafter, I started getting notifications in Windows Update about an update to SP2. However, when I try to install it, it fails with "Code 7367", and provides no other useful information. I tried downloading SQL Server Express SP2 myself but it would not let me update the existing instance on my machine. So I totally removed the instance from my machine through add/remove. However, I restarted and the update is still showing up and won't go away!! Does anybody have any ideas of getting this problem?
I have to search the keyword from windows application using dtSearch. when user enter the list of keywords in UI, i have to connect to dtSearch tool and based on the output return, the matched keyword should be added to database table.

Hi there, i am building a mobile app using vs 2008, the app has about 8 - 12 forms that collect data.. i am thinking of
i am trying to decide how i want to save the temporary work data while the user fills the data collection forms.
when the user selects to create a new report, i will
create a new xml file... as user moves from form to form, i will update the file when the user has finished filling up all the data i will create a transaction and insert the data into the sql ce database and delete the file...
i will be using sql ce 3.5 i think it supports transactions i think it also supports identity.... i am using sql management studio 2005 standalone , so i cannot visually modify the 3.5 sdf.,..,. is there a tool for 2008 that will let me visually modify the table(s)? i dont want to use the 2008 feb community edition...
is there a better way to do this? should i skip the xml and go directly into sql ce insert (for the first record creation) and updates? i think this will be a performance killer on a win mob devilce (5.0)
p.s. i cannot store data in a class, and then commit the class to the transaction because if the application crashes i will loose class data, so xml file will be needed.,

Hi there, I have a question which I put the company that host my website but I didnt get a conclusive answer. Maybe someone here will be able to advise or help me with my situation. I want to build a database that I will run on my local server and the front end of this will be run using a windows application. I have a website which I run the database on the remote server. What I would like to do is to be able to synchronize certain tables between the two databases (such as updating products table, or orders table). I am using sql server 2005 and I am using the sql server management studio to access my database on the remote server. I did notice there is a synchronzie button. I also came across some 3rd party tools. Not sure if that is the way to go. If anyone as done this before or can give me any suggestions, I would be delighted. Thanks Anthony
