Paging: SQL Syntax For Acess Versus SQL Server 2005?

Feb 7, 2008

Hi,

I'm using ComponentArt's Callback grids with Manual Paging.

The CA example grid uses Access:
(http://www.componentart.com/webui/demos/demos_control-specific/grid/programming/manual_paging/WebForm1.aspx)

That SQL syntax produced is invalid in SQL Server 2005.

Example:

"SELECT TOP " & Grid1.PageSize & " * FROM (SELECT TOP " & ((Grid1.CurrentPageIndex + 1) * Grid1.PageSize) & " * FROM Posts ORDER BY " & sSortColumn & " " & sSortOrderRev & ", " & sKeyColumn & " " & sSortOrderRev & ") ORDER BY " & sSortColumn & " " & sSortOrder & ", " & sKeyColumn & " " & sSortOrder

So...
This is what I have (simplified), and it appears return incorrect rows on the last few pages:

SELECT top 15 * FROM Posts where & sFilterString & " and Postid in (SELECT TOP " & ((Grid1.CurrentPageIndex + 1) * Grid1.PageSize) & " Postid FROM Posts where " & sFilterString & " ORDER BY " & sSortColumn & " " & sSortOrder & ") " & " ORDER BY " & sSortColumn & " " & sSortOrderRev

What other approaches has anyone used besides the "ID in (...)"?
The examples I have included show the available variables: sort asc and desc, current page, number of rows on a page, etc.

SQL Server 2005 And 32-bit Versus 64-bit

Dec 14, 2006

Hi all,

we are about to purchase new database servers and have been offered a good deal on 64-bit Xeon machines. At present we run SQL 2000 on Windows Server 2003 both of which are 32-bit versions.

Is there any problem using our current 32-bit Server software on the 64-bit machines (apart from not being able to utilise its full power)? I'm assuming the SQL 2005 licenses are the same price regardless of 32-bit or 64-bit version. If we buy a 64-bit SQL Server version license are we going to get the best out of it on a 32-bit Windows Server edition?

Questions On Use Of SQL Server 2005 Functionality In Gridview Paging

Jun 25, 2007

I have a webpage that displays 4000 or more records in a GridView control powered by a SqlDataSource.  It's very slow.  I'm reading the following article on custom paging: http://aspnet.4guysfromrolla.com/articles/031506-1.aspx.  This article uses an ObjectDataSource, and some functionality new to Sql Server 2005 to implement custom paging.There is a stored procedure called GetEmployeesSubestByDepartmentIDSorted that looks like this:ALTER PROCEDURE dbo.GetEmployeesSubsetByDepartmentIDSorted(    @DepartmentID        int,    @sortExpression        nvarchar(50),    @startRowIndex        int,    @maximumRows        int)AS    IF @DepartmentID IS NULL        -- If @DepartmentID is null, then we want to get all employees        EXEC dbo.GetEmployeesSubsetSorted @sortExpression, @startRowIndex, @maximumRows    ELSE      BEGIN        -- Otherwise we want to get just those employees in the specified department        IF LEN(@sortExpression) = 0            SET @sortExpression = 'EmployeeID'        -- Since @startRowIndex is zero-based in the data Web control, but one-based w/ROW_NUMBER(), increment        SET @startRowIndex = @startRowIndex + 1        -- Issue query        DECLARE @sql nvarchar(4000)        SET @sql = 'SELECT EmployeeID, LastName, FirstName, DepartmentID, Salary,                     HireDate, DepartmentName        FROM            (SELECT EmployeeID, LastName, FirstName, e.DepartmentID, Salary,                     HireDate, d.Name as DepartmentName,                     ROW_NUMBER() OVER(ORDER BY ' + @sortExpression + ') as RowNum             FROM Employees e                INNER JOIN Departments d ON                    e.DepartmentID = d.DepartmentID             WHERE e.DepartmentID = ' + CONVERT(nvarchar(10), @DepartmentID) + '            ) as EmpInfo        WHERE RowNum BETWEEN ' + CONVERT(nvarchar(10), @startRowIndex) +                         ' AND (' + CONVERT(nvarchar(10), @startRowIndex) + ' + '                         + CONVERT(nvarchar(10), @maximumRows) + ') - 1'                -- Execute the SQL query        EXEC sp_executesql @sql      ENDThe part that's bold is the part I don't understand.  Can someone shed some light on this for me?  What is this doing and why?Diane

Better Method To Count Records In Custom Paging For SQL Server 2005

Jul 24, 2006

heres my problem, since I migrated to SQL-Server 2005, I was able to use the Row_Number() Over Method to make my Custom Paging Stored Procedure better.  But theres onte thing that is still bothering me, and its the fact the Im still using and old and classic Count instruction to find my total of Rows, which slow down a little my Stored Procedure.  What I want to know is:  Is there a way to use something more efficiant to count theBig Total of Rows without using the Count instruction???  heres my stored procedure:
SELECT RowNum, morerecords, Ad_Id FROM (Select ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY Ad_Id) AS RowNum, morerecords = (Select Count(Ad_Id) From Ads) FROM Ads)  as testWHERE RowNum Between 11 AND 20
The green part is the problem, the fields morerecords is the one Im using to count all my records, but its a waste of performance to use that in a custom paging method (since it will check every records, normally, theres a ton of condition with a lot of inner join, but I simplified things in my exemple)...I hope I was clear enough in my explication, and that someone will be able to help me.  Thank for your time.

SQL 2005 Paging Using RowNumber()

Apr 22, 2008

I got problem with using custom paging in sql 2005
SET ANSI_NULLS OFF
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER OFF
GO
ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[searchperson_view_general]
@Search nvarchar(2000)

DECLARE @PageLowerBound int
DECLARE @PageUpperBound int

--Default order by to first column
IF (@OrderBy is null or LEN(@OrderBy) < 1)

SET @OrderBy = 'p.[person_id]'
END

-- SQL Server 2005 Paging
declare @SQL as nvarchar(4000)
SET @SQL = 'WITH PageIndex AS ('
SET @SQL = @SQL + ' SELECT distinct'

END

SET @SQL = @SQL + ' ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY ' + @OrderBy + ') as RowIndex '

SET @SQL = @SQL + ' FROM PageIndex p '
SET @SQL = @SQL + ' WHERE RowIndex > ' + convert(nvarchar, @PageLowerBound)

IF @PageSize > 0
BEGIN
SET @SQL = @SQL + ' AND RowIndex <= ' + convert(nvarchar, @PageUpperBound)
END

SET @SQL = @SQL + ' ORDER BY ' + @OrderBy
exec sp_executesql @SQL

I checked my store procedure with parameters
exec [hr2b_searchperson_view_general_load]
'LEFT OUTER JOIN qualification
ON p.person_id = qualification.person_id
WHERE qualification.institutionName like N''%ABC%'''
,' p.person_id asc ', 25 , 1

This is a actual query show :

WITH PageIndex AS
( SELECT distinct TOP 49 ROW_NUMBER() OVER
(ORDER BY p.person_id asc )
as RowIndex
, p.[person_id]
, p.[userType_id]
, p.[fullName]
, p.[gender_nm]
, p.[dateOfBirth]
, p.[positionTitle]
FROM person_view p
LEFT OUTER JOIN qualification
ON p.person_id = qualification.person_id
WHERE qualification.institutionName like N'%ABC%' )
SELECT distinct
p.person_id
, p.userType_id
, p.fullName
, p.gender_nm
, (year(getdate()) - year(p.[dateOfBirth])) as [dateOfBirth]
, p.positionTitle
FROM PageIndex p
WHERE RowIndex > 25 AND RowIndex <= 49 ORDER BY p.person_id asc

If I used this query without using DISTINCT it will return extactly number of records which I expected but It is duplicated.
Then I tried to use DISTINCT in this query number of records return is less than 25 records . Because it was duplicated records when I used LEFT OUTER JOIN.But my query will be able to use more LEFT OUTER JOIN than this query. Please help me get exactly 25 records?

This is my tables
person_view(person_id, fullname, userType_id, gender_nm, dateOfBirth, positionTitle)

Qualification(qualification_id, qualification_nm,institutionName, person_id)

Thanks in advance.

Sql Query Speed 2000 Versus 2005

Aug 15, 2007

We have an interesting problem. We are attempting to migrate from sql 2000 to sql 2005. the schema we have is exactly the same. the new 2005 box is more powerful than our 2000 box.

here is our schema:

tbl_Items
ItemID int pk
ReferenceID int
sessionid varchar(255)
StatusID int

tbl_ItemsStatus
statusid int pk
isinternalstatus bit

there is an index on (ReferenceID, SessionID, StatusID) and (SessionID, StatusID)

this is the query:

DECLARE @referenceid INTEGER
SET @referenceid = 1019

SELECT MAX(i2.itemid)
FROM tbl_Items i2 (NOLOCK)
JOIN tbl_ItemsStatus s (NOLOCK)
ON i2.StatusID = s.StatusID
WHERE
s.IsInternalStatus = 0
AND i2.referenceid = @referenceid
AND i2.sessionid IN (
SELECT i3.sessionid
FROM tbl_Items i3 (NOLOCK)
WHERE
i3.referenceid = @referenceid
AND i3.status <> 7
AND i3.status <> 8
AND i3.status <> 10
AND i3.itemid IN (
SELECT max(i4.itemid)
FROM tbl_Items i4 (NOLOCK)
WHERE i4.referenceid = @referenceid
GROUP BY i4.sessionid
)
AND i3.itemid NOT IN (
SELECT MAX(i7.itemid )
FROM tbl_Items i7 (NOLOCK)
WHERE
i7.referenceid = @referenceid
AND i7.SessionID IN (
SELECT i5.SessionID
FROM tbl_Items i5 (NOLOCK)
WHERE
i5.status <> 11
AND i5.referenceid = @referenceid
AND i5.itemid IN (
SELECT MAX(i6.itemid)
FROM tbl_Items i6 (NOLOCK)
WHERE
i6.referenceid = @referenceid
AND i6.status IN (7,11,8)
GROUP BY i6.sessionid
)
)
GROUP BY i7.SessionID
)
)

GROUP BY i2.sessionid

we know this query is pretty bad and can be optimized. however, if we run this query as is on 2005 it takes about 2 hours to run...if we run the exact same query on 2000 it takes 9 seconds.

so this query on 2005 if run takes 2 hours..however, if we omit the s.IsInternalStatus = 0 or the i2.referenceid = @referenceid line it takes about 9 seconds.

why would this be? it makes no sense why omitting one of those where clauses would increase the performance of the query by 2 hours? we know its a bad query...but this doesnt make sense.

any one else run into this problem?

Performance Issues On Sql 2005 Versus Sql 2000 - AGAIN!

May 15, 2008

I was hoping I wouldn't be another poster with performance issues after migrating to SQl 2005 from SQL 2000 but here I am.

I am in the process of testing out our databases on Sql Server 2005 for migration from SQL Server 2000 and there are certain portions of code that have been affected negatively. I have read thru many of the posts here and have tried out most of the recommendations. I will start out with things I've done and then provide the actual SQL.

1) I have rebuilt all indexes ( using the DBCC REINDEX using the table option).
2) Updated the db engine to latest hot fix (build 3239) that addresses speed related fixes.
3) I also ran sp_createstats using the 'fullscan' option to create stats on all columns of all tables (minus indexed columns)
4) Since nothing seemed to work, I even ran UPDATE STATICS with FULL SCAN on all tables even though I did not need it as the REBUILD woudl have created stats. But I was willing to try anything.

I have confirmed that the execution plans are different even though the data on both sql 2000 and sql 2005 are identical (i put a copy on 2005). The plans themselves are huge as the queries are huge. Here is the query.

SELECT InterimView.* ,TestView.*

FROM View_LabDataExport_TestFormData_55 TestView
RIGHT OUTER JOIN ( SELECT ReqView.*, CDView.*
FROM View_LabDataExport_FormData_55 ReqView
LEFT OUTER JOIN View_LabDataExport_FormData_CD_55 CDView
ON ( CDView.DB_SubjectID_CD = ReqView.DB_SUbjectID )

) InterimView

ON ( InterimView.DB_FormID = TestView.DB_FormID_T AND

InterimView.DB_LabSampleID = TestView.DB_LabSampleID_T )

The above query takes abotu 8 secs to run on 2000 and about 1 minute to run on 2005. This is for a small dataset and on larger datasets this is only going to more pronounced ( as confirmed by other teams that have already migrated in my company). Another point worth mentioning might be if I remove the TestView.* from the select list, it works in 5 to 6 seconds. Is there an issue with Sql 2005 and a large number of columns or anything of that sort? On 2000, the time remains the same , about 8 seconds if I remove this from the select list.

Here is the statistics ion on 2005

One difference between the two is the work table that 2005 creates versus 2000. I can attach the plans but they are huge. I will attach it if you ask.

What I was looking for was suggestions on what I could do short of rewriting code or any suggestions in general.

FYI, this has also been posted on the SQL Server Engine forum.

Thanks

Paging Large Results In SQL 2005

May 29, 2006

lets say we have more than 100 000 rows in Table1, and we want to view each 10 rows alone.... and by pressing on a NEXT button we will see the other 10 pages....

there is 2 buttons : NEXT and PREVIOUS

so can anyone tell me how to do that in SQL 2005, and what is correctly called.

I have found a code that does use ROW_NUMBER in order to view results between 2 numbers,

example: rows between 10 and 50....
but It is not what I want, so please I need some help, thank you

Sql 2005 Paging By Column In Procedure

Apr 23, 2008

Hi,

I've got some procedure which pages select query, the example is below:

Code Snippet
CREATEEND PROC GetCustomersByPage

@PageSize int, @PageNumber int

AS

Declare @RowStart int
Declare @RowEnd int

if @PageNumber > 0
Begin

SET @PageNumber = @PageNumber -1

SET @RowStart = @PageSize * @PageNumber + 1;
SET @RowEnd = @RowStart + @PageSize - 1 ;

With Cust AS
( SELECT CustomerID, CompanyName, CompanyAddress,
ROW_NUMBER() OVER (order by CompanyName) as RowNumber
FROM Customers )

select *
from Cust
Where RowNumber >= @RowStart and RowNumber <= @RowEnd end

How can I change this procedure in order to page the query OVER the column set as an argument?
In other words I would like to execute proc like:
- exec GetCustomersByPage 10, 1, 'CompanyName' which pages by CompanyName(...OVER (order by CompanyName)...)
- exec GetCustomersByPage 10, 1, 'CompanyAddress' which pages by ComanyAddress

Is it possible?

Paging Large Results In SQL 2005

May 29, 2006

lets say we have more than 100 000 rows in Table1, and we want to view each 10 rows alone.... and by pressing on a NEXT button we will see the other 10 pages....

there is 2 buttons : NEXT and PREVIOUS

so can anyone tell me how to do that in SQL 2005, and what is correctly called.

I have found a code that does use ROW_NUMBER in order to view results between 2 numbers,

example: rows between 10 and 50....
but It is not what I want, so please I need some help, thank you

SQL Server Versus Informix

Oct 25, 2000

Hi all,

Anyone here ever used the Informix database and can give me some differences between Informix and SQL.

One of our users is thinking about purchasing a COTS product that only supports an Informix database. I need to convince the user to evaluate other rival applications that can support SQL and need some arguments in favor of not going with Informix.

Any ideas appreciated,
Faustina

SQL Server Versus Pervasive SQL/2000

May 25, 2007

Hi there,

Don't know if anyone can help,

There used to be a Whitepaper on the Microsoft website comparing SQL server (2000?) against Pervasive SQL or 2000, the link was http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/prodtechnol/sql/.

But it's not working anymore.

Does anyone have a copy of this paper, or know where it's now located? I've been looking for hours and can't find it.

Thanks in advance.

Paging Files For SQL Server 7

Mar 13, 2001

Is it necessary (or perhaps just beneficial, if not necessary) to create a paging file on the drive where SQL Server is installed along with the paging file on the OS drive. For example, Windows NT 4 is installed on the C drive, and SQL Server is installed on the D drive. Should I have a paging file on both drives. Someone mentioned to me that you should have a paging file for both drives, but I had never heard of that before.

Why Do I Get Acess Denied

Apr 25, 2004

Hello.

Im trying to insert data in a sql-table using a SP.
But it wont work!

here's my connectionstring (established in Page_Load()):

sqlconCon = new SqlConnection("server=localhost;database=dbJonas;Trusted_Connection=Yes");

and it executed like this (in a OnServerClick-eventhandler):

SqlCommand sqlcmdInsertNewsArticle = new SqlCommand(insertCmd, sqlconCon);
...
filling with parameters
...
sqlcmdInsertNewsArticle.Connection.Open();

The error I get point to the Connection.Open()-line and says :
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

does anyone know what I may have done wrong?

I have other connections to the server that works fine (Select-statements though)

anyone? thankful for tips...

Linked Server Security On BUILTIN Versus SA

Mar 16, 2007

I have this posted in the VFP section of the forums but the more I find out about the issue the more I think there is an SQL Server security issues.

What I am doing is trying to connect to a LinkedServer of my SQL Express 2005 database running on windows vista. I have the linked server set up to connect to a local FoxPro table using the VFPOLEDB provider. If I log in as the 'sa' account I am able to do my query. But if I log into the server using a trusted connection it doesn't work. I get the error [The OLE DB provider "VFPOLEDB" for linked server "sys" reported an error. The provider did not give any information about the error.]

So I went in and set the BUILTINUser login as the sysAdmin. I also made sure that all of the security settings in SQL server were set up the same between the trusted user and the 'sa' user.

My question is, What am I missing? Is there something that I need to set on windows or is there a setting in SQL server?
