Paging Query Without Using Stored Procedure

Dec 1, 2006

Hello, my table is clustered according to the date. Has anyone found an efficient way to page through 16 million rows of data? The query that I have takes waaaay too long. It is really fast when I page through information at the beginning but when someone tries to access the 9,000th page sometimes it has a timeout error. I am using sql server 2005 let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks

 I am also thinking about switch datavase software to something that can handle that many rows. Let me know if you have a suggestion on a particular software that can handle paging through 16 million rows of data.

Paging Through Stored Procedure

Nov 14, 2005

I have a stored procedure which returns the results fine, i.e. my asp code of

do while not objRS.EOF
display record n
objRS.Movenext
Loop

Included in the stored procedure is the number of pages that are ultimately returned, however I don't know how to access that value from my asp code.

Here is the stored procedure. I want to get the value of PageCount from my ASP code????

CREATE PROCEDURE GetSortedPage(
@TableName VARCHAR(50),
@PrimaryKey VARCHAR(25),
@SortField VARCHAR(100),
@PageSize INT,
@PageIndex INT = 1,
@QueryFilter VARCHAR(100) = NULL
) AS
SET NOCOUNT ON

DECLARE @SizeString AS VARCHAR(5)
DECLARE @PrevString AS VARCHAR(5)

SET @SizeString = CONVERT(VARCHAR, @PageSize)
SET @PrevString = CONVERT(VARCHAR, @PageSize * (@PageIndex - 1))

IF @QueryFilter IS NULL OR @QueryFilter = ''
BEGIN

EXEC(
'SELECT * FROM ' + @TableName + ' WHERE ' + @PrimaryKey + ' IN
(SELECT TOP ' + @SizeString + ' ' + @PrimaryKey + ' FROM ' + @TableName + ' WHERE ' + @PrimaryKey + ' NOT IN
(SELECT TOP ' + @PrevString + ' ' + @PrimaryKey + ' FROM ' + @TableName + ' ORDER BY ' + @SortField + ')
ORDER BY ' + @SortField + ')
ORDER BY ' + @SortField
)
EXEC('SELECT (COUNT(*) - 1)/' + @SizeString + ' + 1 AS PageCount FROM ' + @TableName)

END
ELSE
BEGIN

EXEC(
'SELECT * FROM ' + @TableName + ' WHERE ' + @PrimaryKey + ' IN
(SELECT TOP ' + @SizeString + ' ' + @PrimaryKey + ' FROM ' + @TableName + ' WHERE ' + @QueryFilter + ' AND ' + @PrimaryKey + ' NOT IN
(SELECT TOP ' + @PrevString + ' ' + @PrimaryKey + ' FROM ' + @TableName + ' WHERE ' + @QueryFilter + ' ORDER BY ' + @SortField + ')
ORDER BY ' + @SortField + ')

I Want To Do Paging In A Stored Procedure, But Have Some Problem With It

Jan 15, 2004

my procedure is like this
////////////////////////////////////
CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.test2
(
@Page_No int,
@PageSize int,
@RowCount int output
)
AS

declare @intBeginID int
declare @intEndID int
declare @Counter int

set @Counter = 1
select @RowCount = count(*) from project

declare cro_fastread cursor scroll
for select * from project order by sector
open cro_fastread

select @intBeginID=(@Page_No-1)*@PageSize+1
select @intEndID = @intBeginID+@PageSize-1

fetch absolute @intBeginID from cro_fastread

WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0 and @Counter < @PageSize
BEGIN
set @Counter = @Counter + 1
FETCH NEXT FROM cro_fastread
END

close cro_fastread
deallocate cro_fastread
/////////////////////////////////////////
my problem is the "FETCH" method can only get a row at one time, so there would be return many recordsets, how can I merge all the return recordset into one.
thanks in advance!

Sorting + Paging A Large Table In Stored Procedure

May 6, 2007

As I said above, how do I put sorting + paging in a stored procedure.My database has approximately 50000 records, and obviously I can't SELECT all of them and let GridView / DataView do the work, right? Or else it would use to much resources per one request.So I intend to use sorting + paging at the database level. It's going to be either hardcode SQL or stored procedures.If it's hardcode SQL, I can just change SQL statement each time the parameters (startRecord, maxRecords, sortColumns) change.But I don't know what to do in stored procedure to get the same result. I know how to implement paging in stored procedure (ROW_NUMBER) but I don't know how to change ORDER BY clause at runtime in the stored procedure.Thanks in advance.PS. In case "ask_Scotty", who replied in my previous post,   http://forums.asp.net/thread/1696818.aspx, is reading this, please look at my reply on your answer in the last post. Thank you.

Evaluate My Stored Procedure For Paging, Filtering, And Sorting

Apr 28, 2008

This is for SQL Server 2000. The purpose of the procedure is to return a subset of a filtered and sorted result set. The subset, filter criteria, and sort column and sort direction can be set dynamically. It uses the rowcount technique for paging.

This would be used to drive an ASP.NET gridview which supports filtering of the data, paging, and sorting. Please let me know what improvements I can make or if you have an idea for a better solution. (I didn't put this in a vBulletin code block because personally I find two sets of scroll bars annoying, but I can if people think it's better).

Ad Hoc Query Vs Stored Procedure Performance Vs DTS Execution Of Stored Procedure

Jan 23, 2008

Has anyone encountered cases in which a proc executed by DTS has the following behavior:
1) underperforms the same proc when executed in DTS as opposed to SQL Server Managemet Studio
2) underperforms an ad-hoc version of the same query (UPDATE) executed in SQL Server Managemet Studio

What could explain this?

Obviously,

All three scenarios are executed against the same database and hit the exact same tables and indices.

Query plans show that one step, a Clustered Index Seek, consumes most of the resources (57%) and for that the estimated rows = 1 and actual rows is 10 of 1000's time higher. (~ 23000).

The DTS execution effectively never finishes even after many hours (10+)
The Stored procedure execution will finish in 6 minutes (executed after the update ad-hoc query)
The Update ad-hoc query will finish in 2 minutes

Sql 2005 Paging By Column In Procedure

Apr 23, 2008

Hi,

I've got some procedure which pages select query, the example is below:

Code Snippet
CREATEEND PROC GetCustomersByPage

@PageSize int, @PageNumber int

AS

Declare @RowStart int
Declare @RowEnd int

if @PageNumber > 0
Begin

SET @PageNumber = @PageNumber -1

SET @RowStart = @PageSize * @PageNumber + 1;
SET @RowEnd = @RowStart + @PageSize - 1 ;

With Cust AS
( SELECT CustomerID, CompanyName, CompanyAddress,
ROW_NUMBER() OVER (order by CompanyName) as RowNumber
FROM Customers )

select *
from Cust
Where RowNumber >= @RowStart and RowNumber <= @RowEnd end

How can I change this procedure in order to page the query OVER the column set as an argument?
In other words I would like to execute proc like:
- exec GetCustomersByPage 10, 1, 'CompanyName' which pages by CompanyName(...OVER (order by CompanyName)...)
- exec GetCustomersByPage 10, 1, 'CompanyAddress' which pages by ComanyAddress

Is it possible?

Implementing Paging Using Store Procedure

Mar 19, 2007

Hi All,

I am using store procedure to which we pass ...

1.Sql query (String)
2.Starting index (Integer)
3.Page size (Integer)
4.total records out (Integer)

It works fine for the simple queries like "select * from tblcountry" but give error in case when we have sort of inline query or order clause or some complex query etc.

Despite of what is happing in the procedure can any help  me out with a simple store procedure to which i give any query , start index  and page size it should give me record set according to the given page.

For example query could be 'Select * from tblcountry where countryid in (select * from tblteachers) order by countryname desc', start index=0 , page size is 100 and total records are 500.

Note:
When i pass this query to sql server directly using command object its exectued successfully (this mean that it will also run fine in query analyzer), but i want to use paging in sql server so that is why i need a procedure to implement paging and query could be any its fully dynamic but i will be a valid query.

Your help in this regard is realy apperciated...

Stored Procedure In Query Analyzer Vs Linked Procedure In MS Access

Jan 12, 2007

For some reason, I run a stored procedure in Query Analyzer and it works fine. When I run the very same procedure in MS access by clicking on its link I have to run it twice. The first run gives me the message that the stored procedure ran correctly but returned no records. The second run gives me the correct number of records but I have to run it twice. I am running month-to-month data. The first run is Jan thru March. Jan and Feb have no records so I run three months on the first set. The ensuing runs are individual months from April onward. The output is correct but any ideas on why I have to do it twice in Access? I am a bit new to stored procedures but my supervisor assures me that it should be exactly the same.

Using A Stored Procedure To Query Other Stored Procedures And Then Return The Results

Jun 13, 2007

Seems like I'm stealing all the threads here, : But I need to learn :) I have a StoredProcedure that needs to return values that other StoredProcedures return.Rather than have my DataAccess layer access the DB multiple times, I would like to call One stored Procedure, and have that stored procedure call the others to get the information I need. I think this way would be more efficient than accessing the DB  multiple times. One of my SP is:SELECT I.ItemDetailID, I.ItemDetailStatusID, I.ItemDetailTypeID, I.Archived,     I.Expired, I.ExpireDate, I.Deleted, S.Name AS 'StatusName', S.ItemDetailStatusID,    S.InProgress as 'StatusInProgress', S.Color AS 'StatusColor',T.[Name] AS 'TypeName',    T.Prefix, T.Name AS 'ItemDetailTypeName', T.ItemDetailTypeID    FROM [Item].ItemDetails I    INNER JOIN Item.ItemDetailStatus S ON I.ItemDetailStatusID = S.ItemDetailStatusID    INNER JOIN [Item].ItemDetailTypes T ON I.ItemDetailTypeID = T.ItemDetailTypeID However, I already have StoredProcedures that return the exact same data from the ItemDetailStatus table and ItemDetailTypes table.Would it be better to do it above, and have more code to change when a new column/field is added, or more checks, or do something like:(This is not propper SQL) SELECT I.ItemDetailID, I.ItemDetailStatusID, I.ItemDetailTypeID, I.Archived,     I.Expired, I.ExpireDate, I.Deleted, EXEC [Item].ItemDetailStatusInfo I.ItemDetailStatusID, EXEC [Item].ItemDetailTypeInfo I.ItemDetailTypeID    FROM [Item].ItemDetails IOr something like that... Any thoughts?

Paging Query

Query Paging

Apr 29, 2006

let's suppose that we have a table entitled "tab1" which has more than 1000 rows and about 10 columns

so in SQL 2000, if I do this query:

SELECT * FROM tab1

the result will be displaying all the rows from the begining.

and my teacher told me that there's a new option in SQL 2005 which is you can display the result of the query in a page mode.

so can anyone tell me how can I do so for this query:

SELECT * FROM tab1

so that I can see the results in pages.

thanks

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Estimated Query Plan For A Stored Procedure With Multiple Query Statements

Oct 30, 2015

When viewing an estimated query plan for a stored procedure with multiple query statements, two things stand out to me and I wanted to get confirmation if I'm correct.

1. Under <ParameterList><ColumnReference... does the xml attribute "ParameterCompiledValue" represent the value used when the query plan was generated?

<ParameterList>
<ColumnReference Column="@Measure" ParameterCompiledValue="'all'" />
</ParameterList>
</QueryPlan>
</StmtSimple>

2. Does each query statement that makes up the execution plan for the stored procedure have it's own execution plan? And meaning the stored procedure is made up of multiple query plans that could have been generated at a different time to another part of that stored procedure?

SQL Query Paging With Buttons

May 31, 2006

hello, I have this project that I can't find it.
let's say we have more than 100 000 rows in a table called table 1, so if we do: SELECT * FROM TABLE1
the result will be dispalying all the rows with a large scrollbar.
But there's a new TSQL in SQL 2005 "ROW_COUNT" which will help to do the paging. so I have found the procedure but all I need now is to display NEXT and PREVIOUS button in the results in order to switch between the pages. So please any help, Thank you

Select Query For Custom Paging

May 23, 2007

 Hi,I
am working on this select query for a report on website users. The
resulting rows will be displayed in a datagrid with custom paging. I
want to fetch 100 rows each time. This is the simplified query,
@currpage is passed as a parameter. ________________________________________________________________________________DECLARE @table TABLE (rowid INT IDENTITY(1,1), userid INT)INSERT INTO @table (userid) SELECT userid FROM UsersSELECT T.rowid, T.userid, ISNULL(O.userid, 0)FROM @table TLEFT OUTER JOIN ( SELECT DISTINCT(userid) FROM orders)AS OON O.userid = T.useridAND T.rowid > ((@currpage-1) * 100) AND T.rowid <= (@currpage * 100)ORDER BY T.rowid________________________________________________________________________________If
I run this query it returns all the rows, not just the 100 rows
corresponding to the @currpage value. What am I doing wrong? (The
second table with left outer join is there as I need one field to
indicate whether the user has placed an order with us or not. If the
value is 0, the user has not placed any orders) Thanks.

How Do I Write A Query (which Uses A Union) Suitable For Paging

Aug 13, 2007

How do I write a query (using a union) suitable for paging
I currently have a query which results from two queries combined by a union. It returns 3000 rows. I want to replace that query with one which returns only 50 rows from the relevant page [using ROW_NUMBER()].
Is there a way to do this with only 1 CTE or will I need to use two consecutive CTEs [the first get a union on the queries and the second to apply ROW_NUMBER()]. I can't see a way of doing it with only 1 CTE table.
 Alternatively is there a very efficient way to do it using derived tables?

Paging Query Bugs Out When Adding A Where Clause

Oct 10, 2007

I am getting incorrect results from my paging query, where the same results are being returned multiple times. Here are two queries I have found to bring the same results:select top 20 * from lookupdocuments_dbv where catname_cst='MyCategoryName' and (docid_cin not in (select top 620 docid_cin from lookupdocuments_dbv where catname_cst='MyCategoryName'))select top 20 * from lookupdocuments_dbv where catname_cst='MyCategoryName' and (docid_cin not in (select top 640 docid_cin from lookupdocuments_dbv where catname_cst='MyCategoryName'))When I remove the catname_cst where clause it brings back results properly (i.e. records 622-642 and 643-663). What is wrong with my where clause that is causing identical data to be returned?

Paging (retrieving Only N Rows From A Select Query) Like LIMIT

Jun 28, 2002

Message:

Hi,

Suppose i execute a query,

Select * from emp,

I get 100 rows of result, i want to write a sql query similar to the one available in MySql database where in i can specify the starting row and number of rows of records i want,

something like,

select * from emp LIMIT 10,20

I want all the records from the 10th row to the 20th row.

This would be helpful for me to do paging in the front end , where is i can navigate to the next previous buttons and fetch the corresponding records.

I want to do something like in google, previous next screens.

So I am trying to limit the number of rows fetched from a query.

somethin like,

select * from emp where startRowNum=10 and NoOfRecords = 20

so that i can get rows from 10 to 30.

Has any1 done this, plz let me know.

Cheers,
Prashant.

Stored Procedure In A Query

Nov 16, 1999

In access, I can create a function that I can call in a query. It runs that function iteratively. Do I have the same ability with SQL server? Can I call a stored procedure WITHIN a query? I would like to be able to do something like:

Insert into tblOrders(spFirst_Name) Select {Call spUpperLower(tblClients.First_Name)} from tblClients Where ...

So basically, spUpperLower would run on every First Name Row in the result set.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Brad

Query To Stored Procedure

Oct 22, 2007

Hi,

I have created an SQL query which returns the expected data. However, when I try to run it as a stored procedure, I get no rows returned.

(I assume I running the procedure correctly e.g. exec getNonDeployed RCN20047)

Code:

CREATE PROCEDURE getNonDeployed
@packageID text
AS
BEGIN

DECLARE @CollectionID VARCHAR(10)
DECLARE @Collections TABLE (CollectionID VARCHAR(10))

set @CollectionID = (SELECT
CollectionID
from ProgramOffers
where OfferID='@packageID');

WITH CollectionFull (SubCollectionID) AS
(
-- Create the anchor query. This establishes the starting
-- point
SELECT
SubCollectionID
from v_CollectToSubCollect a
where a.SubCollectionID=@CollectionID
UNION ALL
-- Create the recursive query. This query will be executed
-- until it returns no more rows
select
a.SubCollectionID
from v_CollectToSubCollect a
inner join CollectionFull b on b.SubCollectionID=a.ParentCollectionID
)
Insert Into @Collections
SELECT * FROM CollectionFull

select a.RuleName AS MACHINENAME, c.IPAddress0 as IPADDRESS
from v_CollectionRuleDirect a
inner join @Collections b on b.CollectionID=a.CollectionID
inner join v_GS_DEVICE_NETWORK c on c.ResourceID=a.ResourceID
where RuleName not in (select distinct a.MachineName as MACHINENAME
from v_StatusMessage a, v_StatMsgAttributes b, v_CollectionRuleDirect c, v_GS_DEVICE_NETWORK d, v_Collection e
where (a.RecordID=b.RecordID AND a.MachineName=c.RuleName and c.ResourceID=d.ResourceID and c.CollectionID=e.CollectionID)
AND b.AttributeValue IN ('@packageID'))

Query In Stored Procedure

Jul 31, 2007

Hi All:

I have a situation where Im calling a stored procedure to insert some information.

When this information is inserted it is given a date/time stamp - say something in Aug.

There will be some corresponding records from the previous month already in the database that have some additional information that was manually added.

I need to query the corresponding records from the previous month and insert that info into the records that were just inserted.

the problem Im having is that i need to grab the most recent corresponding record. could be a day or a month prior to the one I just inserted. the also could be a record for months prior to that.

So how do i get the most recent corresponding record to my inserted record

Any suggestion on how to query this? and then pass the result to an udpate statement

Using A Stored Procedure As A Sub Query

Jul 23, 2005

Is there any way to do the following?select Max(FieldOne) From (spGetSomeData 100,'test' )Or do I need to define a view and have the stored proc use that view?The stored proc does some things with temp tables that would bedifficult to replicate with a view which is why I'm asking.
