Partition Merge Performance - Sql Server 2005

Mar 11, 2007

Does anyone know of any documentation on the performance of partition
merge/split? Does the merge or split of a partition cause any locking
on the partitioned table? If you were merging or splitting a large
volume of data rebalancing your partitioned table would you
potentially lock users out?

Merge Rep - Partition Jumping

Feb 12, 2007

Hello,

We are merge replicating data from a server to client servers. The publication has a static row filter. If a change is made on the client to the field defining the partition, we are seeing a problem. After a synch, the record is deleted from the client. Here are more specifics:

There are work orders created on the branch office server with a status of "Scheduled". These are replicated to the main office server upon a synch. Only records with a status of 'Scheduled' are replicated to the central server. If the client server changes the status from 'Scheduled' to unscheduled, the record then falls outside of the partition defined by the row filter.

Upon synch, the change in status is sent to the server. The server shows the updated record status. The 2nd part of the merge process notes that the record has fallen outside of the row filter and instructs the client to delete the record.

It appeared that setting @allow_partition_realignment to false would fix this. Setting @allow_partition_realignment to false requires that the publication be a download only publication. This doesn't work for the application.

We are unable to make the client server's the publisher as many of these are running SQL Express.

The answer is possibly in the many options used to setup merge rep. Possibly some pre or post rep routine is needed.

Does anyone have any direction on this ?

Unable To Get The Performance Partition Table

Jan 11, 2007

I created two tables one is based on partition structure and one is non-partition structure.

File Groups= Jan,Feb.....Dec
Partition Functions='20060101','20060201'......'20061201'
I am using RIGHT Range in Partition function.
Then I defined partition scheme on partition function.

I have more than 7,00,000 data in my database.
I checked filegroups and count rows. It works fine.

But When I check the estimation plan time out for query it is same for both partition table and non partition table.

I Need To Be Able To Install SQL Server 2005 On A Different Partition Besides The C Drive. Thanks

Oct 22, 2007

I created two partitions for my hard drive. The C drive which holds all of the Windows 2003 server operating system files and E drive which will be just for data and applications. The C drive is only 30GB while the E drive is 119GB. I need to be able to install in the application on the E drive. I already tried creating a folder on the E partition named program files with the sql2005 folder in it when I go through the installer package. SQL server still wants to be installed on the C drive. Is there anyway I can change this so it gets installed on the E partition. Thank You

How Do I Measure Bandwith Usage For Merge Replication SQL 2005 To Sql Server Mobile 2005?

Jan 24, 2007

Hi,

Is there any way to measure bandwith usage during merge replication between sql server 2005 and sql server mobile 2005 running on a cradled wm5 mobile device.

Attaching the windows performance monitor to the network connection established over usb would work although I was wondering if there was something specific for this case integrated into Sql server 2005 / sql server mobile 2005 / Sql server management studio / third party tools that i could use ?

thnx,

pdns.

Hello everybody!

I hope that someone could help me.

I have a problem when i start sincronyzing with the emulator of MSVS2005 to SQL2005 in Windows Vista. I have the same program in the emulator, but sincronyzing with windows XP Pro and no problem...

I configure the connection to use the IUSR.

The source code that i use:

repl.InternetUrl = @"http://laptop/SQLMobileIIS/sqlcesa30.dll";

repl.Publisher = @"laptop";

repl.PublisherDatabase = @"database";

repl.PublisherSecurityMode = SecurityType.NTAuthentication;

repl.Publication = @"Pubdatabase";

repl.Subscriber = @"SQLMobile";

repl.SubscriberConnectionString = @"Data Source='" + nomeFicheiroBD + "';Password='3409'";

The error that returns is:

"Failure to connect to SQLServer with provided connection information. SQL Server does not exist, access is denied because the IIS user is not a valid user on the SQL Server, or the password is incorrect"

Does anybody knows what i can do?

Performance Problem With Merge Join

May 9, 2008

We are using SSIS to transfer data from OLTP database to DataWarehouse database on a daily basis. Our solution is modelled on / a copy of the (excellent) Project Real solution.

first stage of process, we extract the daily "records" into 4 stage files (raw file source)
Then we process these 4 files to populate our Fact and Dimension tables.

We are having a problem with the population of a couple of our dimension tables.
e.g, Comment dimension table - DimComment
Our aim is to only add records to the table that do not already exist

So
on "left side" of dataflow

1) read contents of stage file - just get commenttext column
2) use derived column component to add three columns (updatedby, lastupdated, ETLLoadID) and to Trim(commenttext)
3) use sort component to sort output - sort on commenttext and remove duplicates
on "right side" of dataflow

1) read the contents of the DimComments table

select ltrim(rtrim(CommentText)) as CommentText,
CommentKey
from DimComment
order by ltrim(rtrim(CommentText))
- remembering to set both the IsSorted and SortOrder properties for the component.

then we use a Merge Join component to merge the two dataflows. Within the Merge Join, we use a Left Outer Join so that we get all of the commenttext records from the daily stage file - which will have a CommentKey from the dimcomment table if there is a match (matching on comment text)
then we use a Conditional Split component to remove records from the data flow where the CommentKey is not null - i.e. we only want records that dont already exist onthe comment table.
finally, update DimComment table

Problem
Database table not being updated correctly - has duplicates
Problem appears to be with the Merge Join component.

From the existing records on the DimComment table, we get 1,943,309 records
From the daily stage file, we get 2,578 records - that after the sort (and duplicate removal) is reduced to 776 records
After the Merge Join, this is reduced to 771 records - only the first 5 records are matched - but it should be reduced by more....

if i amend the reading of the DimComment table to have the following clause

where (commenttext like '%automation comm%')
then it returns 8,347 rows - and 20 rows are matched - correct
if i amend the reading of the DimComment table to have the following clause

where (commenttext like '%automation com%')
then it returns 603,286 rows - and 358 rows are matched - correct
if i amend the reading of the DimComment table to have the following clause

where (commenttext like '%automation%')
then it returns 899,462 rows - and 0 rows are matched - incorrect
if i amend the reading of the DimComment table to have the following clause

where (commenttext like 'a%' or commenttext like 'b%'

or commenttext like 'c%' or commenttext like 'd%' or commenttext like 'e%')
then it returns 899,462 rows - and 29 rows are matched - incorrect - did most of them - but not all ???

in theory - if i run the process twice, i should get NO updates second time through - this is NOT the case !!

so
it would appear that in some cases, the Merge Join component is doing its merge join before it has got all of its records from the DimComment dimension table - matching appear to work on diffferent sets of records - as long as there are not too many records to process

Question 1
is it possible to correct this ?
Question 2
is there a limitation on the processing of the Merge Join component in number of records it can handle ? - if so, what is it ? - we have two other SSIS packages doing similar processing to this (but not as many records - YET)
(tablerow structure on dimensions tables is short - only 3-4 columns per row)
Question 3
might it be better to process the daily comments by after doing the sort, doing a lookup on the DimComment table - and then inserting into the DimComment table if there is no match found

FYI
above details got from running app on my PC on local database (SQL2005) - database is a copy of production (couple of weeks old)

Merge Join's Poor Performance

Sep 4, 2006

Hello All,

I'm experiencing performance problems with the merge join task.
Every time I'm building a nice package using this task, I'm ending up deleting it and using SQL statement in the OLE DB source to accomplish the join since it takes forever to run and crushing my computer at the process.
It makes me feel I don't use the abilities SSIS has to offer compared to DTS.
Of course for the use of several thousands of records it works fine, but in a production surrounding with hundred of thousands of rows, it seems to be futile.

Maybe someone had a little more luck with it?

Problems With Merge Rep After Upgrading From Sql Server 2000 Sp3a To Sql Server 2005 Build 2153

Mar 6, 2007

Hi,

We just upgraded 2 sql servers from sql server 2000 sp3a to sql server 2005 build 2153, and merge rep exists between these 2 servers.

However, after sql server upgrade, we had to reinitialize merge replication and now the merge agent is reporting 2 errors

1)

Error messages:

The Merge Agent failed to upgrade triggers, metadata and stored procedures on the Subscriber to versions compatible with SQL Server 2005. Restart synchronization, and if this failure continues to occur reinitialize the subscription. (Source: MSSQL_REPL, Error number: MSSQL_REPL-2147199403)

2)

Command attempted:

{call sp_MSensure_single_instance (N'Merge Agent Name', 4)}

Error messages:

The merge process could not connect to the Publisher 'Server:database'. Check to ensure that the server is running. (Source: MSSQL_REPL, Error number: MSSQL_REPL-2147199368)

Get help: http://help/21036

looking inside the sp_MSensure_single_instance stored procedure, it's trying to obtain an exclusive lock on resource 'Merge Agent Name' but fails and returns -1

this is the stored procedure executed by sp_MSensure_single_instance and @retcode = -1 and thus cannot obtain exclusive lock on resource

EXEC @retcode = sys.sp_getapplock @Resource = 'Merge Agent Name',

@LockMode = 'Exclusive',

@LockOwner = 'Session',

@LockTimeout = 0,

@DbPrincipal = 'MSmerge_PAL_role'

so i think it's failing because for some reason MSmerge_PAL_role database role does not have enough rights to obtain exclusive lock on necessary resources

i've tried many things to fix this, including scripting out and dropping all merge rep, turning off replication db option and reapplying replication create scripts on the server, and even manually deleting the MSmerge_PAL_role database role but still doesn't work

can anyone help?

Thanks

Merge Replication Issues SQL Server 2005 X64

Jul 12, 2007

Hi ppl,

I have installed SQL Server 2005 x64 Enterprise edition with Service Pack 2 on a Windows Server 2003 x64 Standard Edition with Service Pack 2.

Now I have to configure Merge Replication that will work with SQL Server Compact Edition database on Windows Mobile devices.

Distributor and the Publisher are the same server.

IIS 6.0 is installed on the windows server. I have installed the SQL Server Compact Edition Server tools on the server. However the compact edition server tools are only available for 32bit servers and I have also found out from the article http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/912430 that you cannot replicate data from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server Compact Edition by using the 64-bit version of IIS.
So if this is true does that mean I can not use merge replication on 64 bit server? Does that mean I have to get another 32 bit server with 32 bit IIS on it to make this work or is there another work around. Am i missing something here?

Nabeel

Merge Replication Issue SQL Server 2005

Jul 18, 2007

I have set up merge replication with 1 publisher and 1 subscriber. Distribution is handled by a 3rd server.

I can generate a snapshot at the publisher and apply it to my subscriber. But when I insert some data (approx 30,000 rows) , the Synchronization agent gives the following error when It runs:

The merge process is retrying a failed operation made to article 'xxx' - Reason: 'The Merge Agent was unable to synchronize the row due to one or more unanticipated errors in the batch of changes. When troubleshooting, increase the -OutputVerboseLevel setting, restart the agent, and check for and resolve any errors generated by the database engine. '.

I have increased the OutputVerboseLevel setting and specified a file path in the -OutputMessageFile but the File is not being populated. All the references on books online say to put the file path in the -Output parameter but when I do it says it can only hold an integer value. So I cant see the errors generated by the database engine.

Could anybody please assist with this issue?

Merge Replication Between SQL Server 2005 And SQL Mobile

Oct 18, 2007

Hi,

I'm currently investigating the feasibility of having SQL Mobile on a number of devices running Windows CE. These devices will have to synchronize with the server (either using merge replication or RDA) over GPRS. The problem I have is that some of these devices will never be online. Is there are a way of synching these offline devices? The model I had in mind was using a USB key (or some other storage device) to download the latest updates from an online device and transferring this data to the offline device, and vice versa e.g. from offline to online and then merging. Is this feasible?

Thanks

Merge Replication 32-bit IIS - 64-bit SQL Server 2005 -Windows Mobile 5 Device

Nov 15, 2006

We have setup a 32-bit IIS server on a 32-bit machine. Installed necessary SQL Server components (32-bit replication components). We have installed SQL Server 2005 64-bit SP1 with latest hotfixes on a 64-bit machine.

On the Mobile device we installed SQL Server 2005 Mobile.

When we start mergereplication the problem we have is error 28009 (An instance of the SQL Server Reconciler cannot be created) on the mobile device. I read allot about it, but still have a questetion.

Should this work?

I found the doc: SQL Server 2005 Upgrade Technical Resource Guide:
Note: If your upgrade involves SQL Server CE subscribers, you must perform additional actions on the IIS server. You will need to install SQL Server 2005 client connectivity components along with SQL Server Mobile Edition components on the IIS server. You will also have to replace sqlcesa30.dlll, sqlcerp30.dll, and all the replication components on the IIS server.

From this I conclude it should work or is the doc in error?

If it does not, what can we do?

32-bit SQL Server 2005 on the 64-bit machine should work. (Can a 64-bit SQL Server 2005 run alongside 32-bit SQL Server 2005?).

SQL Server 2005 Merge Replication Without A Hard Coded Password

Jan 10, 2007

Hi. I've looked all over MSDN, newsgroups and the web but I can't find the answer to a problem that I am having.

The application that I am working on used both transactional and merge replication. I want to avoid hard coding passwords into an application that kicks off the pull replication on the client machine.

The client machines are all using SQL Server 2005 Express. The other machine is running SQL Server Standard. The passwords and login details are specified in the subscription properties in the Management Studio.

A fragment of the code is posted below. The transactional sychronization works fine without having to specify any passwords - however the merge replication does not work if both of the passwords are not specified.

private void SynchButton_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { // Set up the subscriber connection details. subscriberConnection = new ServerConnection(subscriberName); try { // Connect to the Subscriber. subscriberConnection.Connect(); // Do the transactional subscription synchronisation independantly of the // merge subscription replication. try { transPullSubscription = new TransPullSubscription(subscriptionDbName, publisherName, publicationDbName, transPublicationName, subscriberConnection); // If the pull subscription and the job exists, start the agent job. if (transPullSubscription.LoadProperties() && transPullSubscription.AgentJobId != null) { TransSynchronizationAgent transSyncAgent = transPullSubscription.SynchronizationAgent; transSyncAgent.Synchronize(); } else { } } catch (Exception ex) { } // Do the merge subscription synchronisation independantly of the // transactional subscription replication. try { // Set up the subscription details for the merge subscription (bi-directional data) mergePullSubscription = new MergePullSubscription(subscriptionDbName, publisherName, publicationDbName, mergePublicationName, subscriberConnection); // If the pull subscription and the job exists, start the agent job. if (mergePullSubscription.LoadProperties() && mergePullSubscription.AgentJobId != null) { MergeSynchronizationAgent mergeSyncAgent = mergePullSubscription.SynchronizationAgent; mergeSyncAgent.DistributorPassword = "<<password>>"; mergeSyncAgent.PublisherPassword = "<<password>>"; mergeSyncAgent.Synchronize(); }etc etc..

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appeciated. Thanks.

Here is the scenario - I run an extract of a MS SQL Server database at a client site, then recreate the database on our in-house server - but without indexes etc. Then I run various queries in order to created data files that will be used for importing into a global system. When I was running Server 2000, most of the queries ran in less than 10 seconds each, but under Server 2005 they take 3 minutes or more! Does anybody know of any parameters that I need to adjust to fix this problem?

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Performance

Nov 6, 2007

 Hi,I have a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise installed on Windows Server 2003, and developing web application for 500 clients. So I am interested will I have any performance issues if I put in 'Articles' table, data for all 500 clients and then filter it on client ID, or should I make 500 'Articles' tables for every client one with different name and then change sqldatasource for gridview depending on which client is working on it. I will have, beside 'Articles' table, another 10 tables, which means 5500 tables total, if I use second approach, on first I will have only 11 tables. So I am asking is it better to have more tables with less data, or less tables with more data. And what are pros and cons for both approach. Thanks a lot!

Performance Issues With Sql Server 2005 And Adp

Jun 4, 2008

Ive got sql server 2005 WG edition running and have an access adp application which connects to it. However since upgrading to sql server 2005 from 2000 the adp project runs a lot slower. However when I install express on a machine and connect the adp project to it which sits on the same machine it runs just fine.
We have also rebuild all the indexes for the database but that doesnt fix the problem. Could someone please help...
