Pass NULL Value To Database
Feb 12, 2014
I would like to know if it's possible to pass NULL value to the database. I want to update a column, a parameter has to be passed in to do so, i.e @value = '123'. but if there were no parameter value, i.e @value = '', I want to the value in the database to be NULL. I don't want to pass (''). can this be achieved?

How can I pass into the database (@User_fax = null) if the fax form field is empty, from a command type Stored Procedure? For example:
Dim CmdUpdate As New SqlCommand("Form2_NewUser", strConnection)
CmdUpdate.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
CmdUpdate.Parameters.Add("@User_fax", SqlDbType.char, 9)
CmdUpdate.Parameters("@User_fax").Value = fax.Text()
...
strConnection.open()
CmdUpdate.ExecuteNonQuery
strConnection.close()
And, the stored procedure inside Sql server:
USE market1
GO
ALTER PROC Form2_NewUser
@User_id bigint, @User_fax char(9),...
AS
SET NOCOUNT ON
UPDATE Users
SET User_fax = @User_fax, ...
WHERE User_id = @User_id
SET NOCOUNT OFF
GO
Thank you,
Cesar

hi i am using formview
i have a date field textbox which selects date from ajax calender
now my point is when i make this field blank
at that time in my gridview rather then displaying the date field blank
it shows me the value 1 Jan 1900
this is the default date of sqlserver which it returns when we leave the field ''
now when i pass the value null it automatically takes it as ''
in my class file my function is
public object checkdate(TextBox txtdate) { if (txtdate.Text == "") { return null; } else { return txtdate.Text; } }
in my cs file i wrote object checkemptydate = obj.checkdate(nextvaccinationdate);
string values = patientID + ",'" + vaccination + "',convert(varchar,'" + vaccinationdate + "',106)," + checkemptydate + ",'" + remarks + "'";
note that i even tried this too
string values = patientID + ",'" + vaccination + "',convert(varchar,'" + vaccinationdate + "',106)," + null + ",'" + remarks + "'";
and
string values = patientID + ",'" + vaccination + "',convert(varchar,'" + vaccinationdate + "',106),convert(varchar,'" + checkemptydate + "',106),'" + remarks + "'";
but nothing is working it passes '' not null
how could i solve this problem?

How to pass a null to SelectParameters in SqlDataSource?
The type of "CreateDate" is DateTime, the following code can be run correctly!
SqlDataSource1.SelectParameters["CreateDate"].ConvertEmptyStringToNull = true;SqlDataSource1.SelectParameters["CreateDate"].DefaultValue = "2006-11-12";
now I hope to pass null value to the Parameter "CreateDate", but the following 3 section codes don't work!
SqlDataSource1.SelectParameters["CreateDate"].ConvertEmptyStringToNull = true;SqlDataSource1.SelectParameters["CreateDate"].DefaultValue = string.Empty;
or
SqlDataSource1.SelectParameters["CreateDate"].ConvertEmptyStringToNull = true;SqlDataSource1.SelectParameters["CreateDate"].DefaultValue =null;
or
SqlDataSource1.SelectParameters["CreateDate"].ConvertEmptyStringToNull = true;SqlDataSource1.SelectParameters["CreateDate"].DefaultValue = "";

I'm developing a web app using VS2005. I have a webpage with panel containing a gridview populated by a SQLdatasource. The SQLdatasource in turn is populated by a stored procedure that can take up to 5 parameters. The user types in up to 5 separate words (searchterms) in a text box which are then parsed and passed to the stored proc in the datasource which performs a fulltext search. The gridview then becomes visible. My problem is that unless the user types in 5 searchterms (no less), the gridview returns zero rows. 5 searchterms returns the proper results. Somehow, I need to be able to pass in null or empty values for unneeded parameters.
I've tested the stored procedure in Query Analyzer and from within the SQLdatasource configuration (using Test Query) using 0 up to 5 parameters and it works fine, so that's not my problem. Here's the code that runs after the user types in their search term(s) and presses a button:Public Sub FTSearch_Command(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As CommandEventArgs) Handles btnFullText.Command
Dim x As Integer
pnlFullText.Visible = Falsefiltertext = Replace(txtSearchTxt.Text, "'", "''")
If Not filtertext Is Nothing Then
filtertext = filtertext.Trim
Else
Return
End IfDim arrayString() As String = filtertext.Split(" ")
Dim length As Integer = arrayString.LengthFor x = 0 To (length - 1)
If Not arrayString(x) Is Nothing ThenSelect Case x
Case 0 : lblFTParm1.Text = arrayString(0)Case 1 : lblFTParm2.Text = arrayString(1)
Case 2 : lblFTParm3.Text = arrayString(2)Case 3 : lblFTParm4.Text = arrayString(3)
Case 4 : lblFTParm5.Text = arrayString(4)
End Select
End If
Next
pnlFullText.Visible = "True"
End Sub
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

I have a Nullable columns. I want the value to be zero if NULL is passed.
1) having a view for every such table,
2) using ISNULL for needed columns in that view
3) using those view for inserts instead of using tables directly.
This way i can reduce the number of places to use ISNULL in all my SPs.I dont want to make it to NOT NULL, as my application impact will be high. And Default constraint does not work here.

Hello,I've been searching the web for quite some time to resolve the problemof "1/1/1900" returning in a datetime field in SQL that resulted from ablank (not NULL) value being passed to it through an ASP page.The solution is that a NULL value needs to passed to SQL from ASP.Thats fine...I understand the why the problem is happening and thesolution around it. HOWEVER, I can't seem to get the proper syntax towork in the ASP page. It seems no matter what I try the "1/1/1900"still results. Below are a few variations of the code that I havetried, with the key part being the first section. Does anyone have anysuggestions?!?!?______________cDateClosed = ""If(Request.Form("dateClosed")= "") ThencDateClosed = (NULL)end ifsql="UPDATE rfa SET "&_"dateClosed='"& cDateClosed &"', "&_"where rfaId='"& Request.Form("RFAID")&"'"_____________________________cDateClosed = ""If(Request.Form("dateClosed") <> "") ThencDateClosed = (NULL)end ifsql="UPDATE rfa SET "&_"dateClosed='"& cDateClosed &"', "&_"where rfaId='"& Request.Form("RFAID")&"'"_____________________________cDateClosed = ""If(Request.Form("dateClosed")= "") ThencDateClosed = NULLend ifsql="UPDATE rfa SET "&_"dateClosed='"& cDateClosed &"', "&_"where rfaId='"& Request.Form("RFAID")&"'"_______________Thanks in advance!!!!

Hello,
I have a stored procedure that on two fields it allows null. On the report, I have two DropDownList boxes that are populated with data, however, I would like the user to be able to have the option of not selecting an item from these list, thus passing null to the stored procedure.
When I goto "Report | Report Parameters" I have set these fields to "allow null" and "allow blank" and at the bottom I also gave it the default value of null.
When I run the report in preview mode, those two dropdownlist have a <Select a Value> and my assumption is since I want them to pass null, I will just leave them that way. However, when the report is ran, I receive an error saying "Please select a value for the parameter: (my parameter)". So it forces me to select an option at which I don't want to do.
How can I set this to pass a null?
Thanks,
Flea#

I need to pass in null/blank value in the date field or declare the field as string and convert date back to string.
I tried the 2nd option but I am having trouble converting the two digits of the recordset (rs_get_msp_info(2), 1, 2))) into a four digit yr. But it will only the yr in two digits.
The mfg_start_date is delcared as a string variable
mfg_start_date = CStr(CDate(Mid(rs_get_msp_info(2), 3, 2) & "/" & Mid(rs_get_msp_info(2), 5, 2) & "/" & Mid(rs_get_msp_info(2), 1, 2)))
option 1
I will have to declare the mfg_start_date as date but I need to send in a blank value for this variable in the stored procedure. It won't accept a null or blank value.
With refresh_shipping_sched
.ActiveConnection = CurrentProject.Connection
.CommandText = "spRefresh_shipping_sched"
.CommandType = adCmdStoredProc
.Parameters.Append .CreateParameter("ret_val", adInteger, adParamReturnValue)
.Parameters.Append .CreateParameter("@option", adInteger, adParamInput, 4, update_option)
.Parameters.Append .CreateParameter("@mfg_ord_num", adChar, adParamInput, mfg_ord_num_length, "")
.Parameters.Append .CreateParameter("@mfg_start_date", adChar, adParamInput, 10, "")
Set rs_refresh_shipping_sched = .Execute
End

We have a case where in we should show date based on conditions for e.g if we had a column defined as
col varchar(10) then we would show col as 'NULL' for some condition and actual value when no condition
Normaly date values are stored here e.g under col 20150901 .
Case
when col>'20150901' then 'NULL'
else col
end as Derivedcol
Note this is an extract process and we are presenting data by pumping the data in a table .
Now there is another similar column -colz varchar(10) which stores date but doesnt have case condition so whenever date has no value its shows null which is database null.
So whats the difference between database null and string null ?
How can we show database null for the case condition instead of string "null"?

Hey. I need to substitute a value from a table if the input var is null. This is fine if the value coming from table is not null. But, it the table value is also null, it doesn't work. The problem I'm getting is in the isnull line which is in Dark green color because @inFileVersion is set to null explicitly and when the isnull function evaluates, value returned from DR.FileVersion is also null which is correct. I want the null=null to return true which is why i set ansi_nulls off. But it doesn't return anything. And the select statement should return something but in my case it returns null. If I comment the isnull statements in the where clause, everything works fine. Please tell me what am I doing wrong. Is it possible to do this without setting the ansi_nulls to off??? Thank you
set ansi_nulls off
go
declare
@inFileName VARCHAR (100),
@inFileSize INT,
@Id int,
@inlanguageid INT,
@inFileVersion VARCHAR (100),
@ExeState int
set @inFileName = 'A0006337.EXE'
set @inFileSize = 28796
set @Id= 1
set @inlanguageid =null
set @inFileVersion =NULL
set @ExeState =0
select Dr.StateID from table1 dR
where
DR.[FileName] = @inFileName
AND DR.FileSize =@inFileSize
AND DR.FileVersion = isnull(@inFileVersion,DR.FileVersion)
AND DR.languageid = isnull(@inlanguageid,null)
AND DR.[ID]= @ID
)
go
set ansi_nulls on

Hey Guys:
--- Not sure if this should be moved to webforms forum, or if it belongs here ---
Alright, I have been dealing with this issue for a few days now, and have found a few solutions but they all seem to throw different errors so I figured I'd ask here.
What i am trying to do is have a webform where user enter data, and have the data passed across forms, then displayed and inserted into a database on another form. THe first for has an asp:rangevalidator control dymamicly built so I cannot simply take of the tags and use the old style.
Eventually the user will be directed to a paypal form, and upon successful completion be redirected to the page with the insert command within it, but for now, passing it to a second page for review, then inserting it will work.
I am not sure how to accomplish this, a tutorial or a code example would be great!! I have though about panels, creating public objects, etc, but all the solutions I have found have one issue or another when I attempt to create them.
I'm using asp.net 1.1, VB.net and SQL server.
Thanks,
Brian Sierakowski

Hi all--I am writing a DTS package looking to back up all databases in sequence from a specific instance of SQL Server. I am calling CDOSYS in a stored procedure from support.microsoft.com to send email upon failure. I have two types of SQL tasks I am writing into the DTS package:
1. backup database <database> to disk = '<drive>:<path>.bak' with init
2. Upon failure of a particular database to back up to file, execute the following SQL task:
declare @srvname varchar(128),
@db_name varchar(128),
@msg nvarchar(4000)
SELECT @srvname = @@servername
select @db_name = db_name()
set @msg = 'Hi--check your database backups. The ' + @db_name + ' database backup on ' + @srvname + ' has failed.
Thanks--SQL Server';
SELECT @srvname, @db_name, @msg
(Many thanks to Whitney Weaver and SQL_Menace for help with sections of this code)
Upon success of #1 and/or #2, go on to the next database, repeating cycle of the SQL tasks above for the next database in the task. For example, this logic goes like:
1. Back up master database; if fails, send email in SQL task; if either task is successful, goto database #2;
2. Back up model database; ...<etc>.
My problem is the current database set in @db_name. I apparently need to reset this variable for each database that gets backed up, and I can't seem to get these set as values to be passed from SQL Task #1 to SQL Task #2. Any suggestions on how I might achieve this?

Hi
I want to know how do we store null in the database
i know Null is unkown value
but it has to be something so the SQL server can know its null ( computer only knows 0s and 1s )
is it pointers and null does not have a pointer?
or do we store something physically?
an example : we have string(varchar) column that has this value in it "Joey Tribbiani" that means in the hard disk we will see 14 bytes "Joey Tribbiani" in there, if we changed the value to "Monika" the 14 bytes will be replaced by 5 bytes "Monika", if we changed to empty strike then we will have 0 bytes ""
now if changed it to become NULL what is going to happen to the hard disk, what is going to be in there physically??
may anyone help me in this?
many thanks

I am using a script component to retrieve some values from a server. This script component using Script task which uses VB.NET code. I have tested the VB.NET code and it returns a non null value for a string field 'sentence'. The 'sentence' feild is then passed on to an OLE DB Command transformation to be stored into the database along with a couple of other feilds.
The OLE DB Command transformation uses a stored procedure to store these feilds into the database. But when I check my table in the database, all other feilds are stored properly other than the 'sentence' feild which is null.
I am wondering what could be causingthis problem.

Hi there,
I have a fairly generic question regarding database design.
I am working on my first database using SQL Express.
I am testing the database by inserting records into the pre defined tables.
Sometimes I forget to input text into a non null field. When
this happens it displays an error and then skips a few rows
which makes my row numbering messy. For example say I have
Row 1, Row 2 Row 3 all nicely formatted but on Row 4 I make a mistake
this row then disapears and their is gap between 3 and 5 where 4 was.
Although I am just testing, I was wondering what happens in a real
scenario if an inexperienced data input person makes a few mistakes it
makes the database numbering systems look bad. In this case
is it common to make most fields NULL to allow for admin errors??

I am currently using the following code to populate fields in a form EditUserNotes.Text = EditUserReader.GetString(2); which works just fine (the datatype in the database is 'text') as long as the data stored in the database is not null. If the data is null, I get the error: Data is Null. This method or property cannot be called on Null values. which is really annoying as there are times when the data stored in the database is legitimately NULLI can use the following code to fix the problem, but it seems less elegant EditUserNotes.Text = EditUserReader.GetValue(2).ToString() is there really a difference between the GetString and the GetValue(x).ToString() methods or are they interchangeable?
