I currently have a stored procedure that looks something like this
SELECT * FROM tblQuestions WHERE Title LIKE ISNULL('%'+@Name+'%', Title)
I have a form that supplies this value. This statement should make it so that if a NULL value is passed in, then it will return all the rows, if some text is specified, then it will not. On my SQLDataSource on the page where the parameter is supplied I have set ConvertEmptyStringsToNull to True, but when I say in my code,
SqlDataSource1.SelectParameters.Add("@Name", TextBox1.Text);
It won't give me back any of the rows, I know that the stored procedure works fine because I can get it to work by a basic query and other testing on it, so somewhere in my form, the NULL value isn't being passed, I belive that it is passing an empty string and I don't know why. Thank you in advance
I've built a sample CLR function with the following declaration....
CREATE FUNCTION GetManager(@DeptCode nvarchar(3)) RETURNS nvarchar(1000) WITH RETURNS NULL ON NULL INPUT AS EXTERNAL NAME Assembly1.[ClassLibrary1.MyVBClass].MyManager
It returns the value "Unknown" as it would have for any unknown DeptCode, as-programmed.
I'm of the theory it should have returned NULL without actually firing the function? Or is this only for non-CLR items... or stored procedures, not functions?
I am using a SQLDataSource with Stored Procedures. The Select, Insert and Update all work well. However I cannot get the delete to work. My stored procedures are tested and verified and the parameter names are the same as the source columns. When I try to run the delete an error that the stored procedure expects the parameter @locationStationId, however this value passes properly for the Update command?!? I tried to change the parameter to original_locationStationID to pass the original value, however this result in Null being passed for the parameter. I cannot understand why this works for Update and passes the location ID, but will not work for DELETE. Can anyone shed any light onto the matter? Thanks.OldValuesParameterFormatString="original_{0}" UpdateCommand="spUpdateLocation" UpdateCommandType="StoredProcedure" DeleteCommand="spDeleteLocation" DeleteCommandType="StoredProcedure"> <DeleteParameters> <asp:Parameter Name="locationStationId" Type="String" /> </DeleteParameters> <InsertParameters> <asp:Parameter Name="locationStationId" Type="String" /> <asp:Parameter Name="locationType" Type="String" /> <asp:Parameter Name="locationName" /> <asp:Parameter Name="division" Type="String" /> </InsertParameters>
how can i pass null value to database? date is not required field in my database. i can pass default date but i think default date is not good in my case as it is DOB of a customer.
I have an ASP.Net page that needs to sometimes pass a null parameter value to the querystring. It bombes out with an error that a date cannot be "" and that i need to supply the date.
Has any1 been able to get this right? How does one pass a null date through the querystring?
We have a package with a package variable. This variable is of data-type 'DateTime'. However, when i try to pass the value 'NULL' the package fails... i use the following statement with 'dtexec.exe'
/SET Package.Variables[MyDate].Value;"NULL"
What's the correct syntax for passing null-values? But maybe (because i cannot find anything on this) i should ask if this is even possible...
I have a number Stored Procs that have been around for a while that pull the entire list, or if I pass an ID, will just the record for that ID like below.
I want to be able to use these querries to poplate Multi-Select parameter dropdowns. going to the Data tab and creating a new dataset, I put in the SP name, and close the window. I then go to the Red ! point to preview the data it prompts me for my ID parmaeter on my SP. In the dropdown list it has '<Null>' (no ' though). When I run it, it works fine and returns all of my records.
When I run the report, it errors saying I didn't pass a parm for ID. I go back to the data tab, and edit my DataSet hitting the elipse. I go to the 3 tab called parameters, and type the following I get the following errors:
@ID= ---- ERROR - Return statement in function must return a value
@ID = Null -----ERROR - Null constant not supported use System.DBNull instead
@ID = System.DBNull ----ERROR - [BCS30691] DBNull is a type in System and cannot be used in an expression
@ID=System.DBNull.Value --- NO ERROR, but it does not return anything either. I also did a SQL Trace, and I can see that it doesn't even send the querry to the database.
Does anyone know another magic value I can pass to get this to work?
I am being a little stuborn, I know that I could just create new procs, and wrap up the null, but the more stuff you create the more you have to maintain, so I would prefer to reuse these.
Thanks in advance.

PS: My company is moving from crystal reports to Reporting service, and Reporting services is Rocks! It is very intuitve, simple and straign forward. The formatting is easy with the table and the matrix control blows away the crosstab control in crystal. Also, I'm finding that because crystal was so un extendable, that I would spend hours shaping sql to get over it's blemishes, and hours shaping it in the report, only to sometimes reliaze that the proposed onetime hack wouldn't work, and have to start all over! So far with RSS any tips and tricks I have learned can very easily be applied to any report I work on! Aslo, I do mostly interanet web apps, and it is nice to dump my reports on the Report Server, and not worry about haing to create a web page, create a datasource and all the ansilary stuff to go along with it. The only thing I don't like is the name 'Roporting Services': It does not stick out too far in Google Searches like 'AJAX.NET' or 'ASP.NET'. Anyway kudoes to the Reporting Services team!
ALTER PROC [dbo].[spGetLaborRole] @ID INT = NULL AS BEGIN SELECT ID, Descr FROM dbo.LaborRole WHERE ( (ID = @ID) OR (@ID IS NULL) )
Hi,I have a stored procedure which expects a Null value if a user does not enter something into a TextBox. The query should return all rows if this case.The stored procedure works as expected in Query Analyzer, but my application does not seem to send a Null and no rows are returned. Any ideas?Thanks.ps I am using SqlDataSource and GridView, this is the first time I have tried to connect to a database with asp.net.
Version: ASP.Net 2.0Language: C#Hello Everyone!I'm saving data from a function to an SQL Server 2000 db via a stored procedure. There are a few fields which are conditional and thus need not be passed to the procedure everytime. Under those circumstances I need to store null values in the fields.The problem is if I the value of the parameter as null, VS throws the error that a required parameter is not passed. I tried setting 'IsNullable' property of the parameter to true but it works for only those fields who are declared NULL in the stored procedure (For e.g. @DOB DATETIME = NULL).Strangely, this works well in classic ASP.Does anyone know how to accomplish this? Note, altering stored procedures is not an option for me.Thanks a lot!
Hello,I'm trying to pass a null object to a stored procedure to update a SQL Table boolean field with a null value. My SQL Table boolean column allows nulls.I'm using an InfoObject which has several properties all corresponding to fields in the SQL Table. One of those fields is a boolean. I create an instance of the InfoObject in my code and assigns values to the various properties. The boolean property in question (call it InfoOjbect.BooleanProperty) is not assigned anything. I then call my StoredProcedure passing the InfoObject to it (using the DotNetNuke DAL architecture) and the final result is the Table's boolean column is populated with a 0 and not a NULL. If I explicitly define the InfoObject.BooleanProperty = null.nullboolean before passing it to the Stored Procedure, the same thing happens. How do I pass a null to the SQL database for a boolean field? I've tried making InfoObject.BooleanProperty = dbnull.value but it won't let me do this saying "dbnull cannot be converted to a boolean." Do I have to explicitly create my InfoObject properties to allow for a null to be assigned to it?Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm using the DotNetNuke DAL architecture passing my InfoObject through a dataprovider to the sqldataprovider which calls the SQL Stored Procedure to add the new record to the Table.Thanks in advance for any help.
I'm not sure if this question should be in this thread but anyway...
I have a form (Mricosoft Access front end) in which the user enter a Pending Date in one of the fields. The date is populated into my backend (SQL Server) withouht problems. Whenever the issue which had the pending date in the field is resolved I'd like to delete this date from this field and also from the back end. At the moment I'm not being able to pass the "value" Null to my back end (probably because it's a datetime type). I've searched the net throughout and I couldn't find a way around it. Only found solution to when the data is not date but numbers/letters, etc... Any ideas on how can I sort this out?
I am trying to test the concept of passing multi value parameters from one report using the Action Property of a textbox to open another report is a new Window with the Multi Value parameter values already passed. The test involves the following:
Report 1:
1. Multi Value Parameter @ReportParameter1 has three Values: Value1, Value2, Value3
2. Has a text box with the Action Property set to Go to URL with the following Expression: ="javascript:void(window.open('http://reportserver/Reports/Pages/Report.aspx?ItemPath=%2fReports%2fReport2&rs:Command=Render&ReportParameter1=" + JOIN(Parameters!ReportParameter1.Value,"&ReportParameter1=") + "'))"
Report 2:
1. Has Two Parameters @ReportParameter1 and @ReportParameter2
2. @ReportParameter1 has Available Values as follows: Value1, Value2, Value3
Does not have any default Values.
When I click on the textbox on Report1, it does navigate to Report2 but none of the Values are being set.
I have a report. I need to make a drop-down parameter optional. I've setup the parameter to use a dataset as its source, and I need to allow the value to be null. I've selected allow nulls check box, and I've even tried setting the default value to System.DBNull.Value. But, when the entry is not selected (blank), no data ever comes back. If the data is blank or null, my procedure works (I've tested it). How do I send a null value to the database through reporting services report? I was hoping to avoid creating a special query just for that purpose.
I have a data-driven subscription (DDS) stored procedure that gets called when a subscription fires and returns parameters to a report. One of the parameter values I want to return is NULL, which also happens to be the default value of the corresponding report parameter.
When I set the report parameter to use the default value (NULL) when setting up the subscription in Report Manager, the subscription works fine. When I try to pass the NULL value from the DDS proc to the report, the subscription fails.
I do not know what the error logs say. I've rarely looked at them and what I have seen seems a bit cryptic. I've narrowed down through trial-and-error that passing the NULL value is the issue.
Has anyone else experienced this issue and do you have a resolution?
Hello, everyone! I have some fields that must have data entered into them(i.e they shd not be left blank) & since the data has to be different almost everywhere I cannot set a default also. However I have defined these columns as NOT NULL, but still when data is entered they accept null values. WHY? Please help! Thanks in advance! Adie
I'm building a stored procedure to edit a row in my database but first I'm wanting to check for null values in the parameters and set them to their respective value in the row I'm attempting to edit.
I have a problem with a SQL that check if a date column IS NULL. On one server the check work ok but on another (the same data is on both - restored copy) the check does not find any NULL values. If check where datecolumn =convert(datetime,'9999-12-31 23:59:59.000',121) I get the same result as when checking for NULL in the other.
Is there any parameter set somewhere that tell the server to return a value even if NULL is stored in the database?
I'm building a stored procedure to edit a row in my database but first I'm wanting to check for null values in the parameters and set them to their respective value in the row I'm attempting to edit.
The problem I'm having is described below all this code.---------------------------------------------------------My content page has a SqlDataSource: <asp:SqlDataSource ID="sqlGetUserInfo" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:RemoteNotes_DataConnectionString %>" SelectCommand="SELECT [UserFirstName], [UserLastName] FROM [Users] WHERE ([UserGUID] = @UserGUID)" onselecting="sqlGetUserInfo_Selecting"> <SelectParameters> <asp:Parameter Name="UserGUID" Type="String" /> </SelectParameters> </asp:SqlDataSource> -----------------------------------------------------Inside my OnSelecting event, I have: protected void sqlGetUserInfo_Selecting(object sender, SqlDataSourceSelectingEventArgs e) { sqlGetUserInfo.SelectParameters["UserGUID"].DefaultValue = Membership.GetUser().ProviderUserKey.ToString(); } ---------------------------------------------------------------------And, inside my Page_Load, the relevant code is: //String strUserFirstName = ((DataView)sqlGetUserInfo.Select(DataSourceSelectArguments.Empty)).Table.Rows[0]["UserFirstName"].ToString(); DataView dvUserDetails = (DataView)sqlGetUserInfo.Select(DataSourceSelectArguments.Empty); if ((dvUserDetails != null) && (dvUserDetails.Count > 0)) { DataRow drUserInfo = dvUserDetails.Table.Rows[0]; lblHelloMessage.Text = "Hello, " + drUserInfo["UserFirstName"].ToString() + ((drUserInfo["UserLastName"].ToString() == "") ? "" : " " + drUserInfo["UserLastName"].ToString()); } ---------------------Now, here's the problem. My "if" statement is never executing because "dvUserDetails" is null. However, when I break the execution and put awatch on the actual Select() statement, it shows a DataView with the correct return rows! You can see the commented line where I tried tobypass the DataView thing (just as a test), but I get an object reference is null error.The weird thing is that it was working fine one minute, then started getting "funky" (working, then not, then working, then not), and now it just doesn't work at all. All thiswithout me changing one bit of my code because I was checking out some UI flow and stopping and restarting the application. I've tracked downthe temporary files directory the localhost web server runs from, deleted all those files, and cleaned my solution. I've even triedrebooting, and nothing seems to make it work again.My relevant specs are VS2008 9.0.21022.8 RTM on Vista Enterprise x64.
I am update/inserting records threw a web form in vb.net. I need to insert 'NULL' into my microsoft sql server database. I am not talking about the below line of code where website is the name of my paramater. If i do that it will just place a blank into that field in the database. If i dont enter anything into that textbox I want it to to say NULL in that field. So if I go into the actual table in the SQL Server Management Studio and look at the website field of the recored I just added or updated and did not type anything into the web site textbox it needs to say NULL. I also tried the second line of code but that places a single quote in front and behind NULL. So the field will have the value 'NULL'. website.value = txtwebsite.text.tostirng if txtwebsite.text ="" then website.value ="NULL" end if The reason why I need the NULL there is because I bind the website filed to a hyperlink template in a gridview. The actual text of the hyperlink is bound to PAYER which is a name of a insurance payer but the navigateto is bound to the website field. If i do not enter any data into the website field and it stays as NULL, then when my gridview is loaded, payers that dont have a website will not be underlined and user wont have the option to click on them since there is no value for the navigateto. But if i use my form to update/add a payer and leave the website textbox blank in puts a blank into that field in my database and when it loads that new row into the gridview the PAYER is underlined and u can click on it but it will just take u to the web site is unavailable page. So is there anyway to actaull have NULL placed into a filed and not just blank space
Hey. I need to substitute a value from a table if the input var is null. This is fine if the value coming from table is not null. But, it the table value is also null, it doesn't work. The problem I'm getting is in the isnull line which is in Dark green color because @inFileVersion is set to null explicitly and when the isnull function evaluates, value returned from DR.FileVersion is also null which is correct. I want the null=null to return true which is why i set ansi_nulls off. But it doesn't return anything. And the select statement should return something but in my case it returns null. If I comment the isnull statements in the where clause, everything works fine. Please tell me what am I doing wrong. Is it possible to do this without setting the ansi_nulls to off??? Thank you
set ansi_nulls off
go
declare
@inFileName VARCHAR (100),
@inFileSize INT,
@Id int,
@inlanguageid INT,
@inFileVersion VARCHAR (100),
@ExeState int
set @inFileName = 'A0006337.EXE'
set @inFileSize = 28796
set @Id= 1
set @inlanguageid =null
set @inFileVersion =NULL
set @ExeState =0
select Dr.StateID from table1 dR
where
DR.[FileName] = @inFileName
AND DR.FileSize =@inFileSize
AND DR.FileVersion = isnull(@inFileVersion,DR.FileVersion)
I had a view in which I did something like this isnull(fld,val) as 'alias'
when I assign a value to this in the client (vb 6.0) it works ok in sql2000 but fails in 2005. When I change the query to fld as 'alias' then it works ok in sql 2005 . why ?? I still have sql 2000 (8.0) compatability.
Also some queries which are pretty badly written run on sql 2000 but dont run at all in sql 2005 ???
any clues or answers ?? it is some configuration issue ?
In my report i have CNAME parameter , which allows null value. I checked Allow null value check box in report parameter properties.
when i preview the report , it displays checked NULL check box beside CNAME parameter . I want to give some meaningful name(i.e.ALLCustomers) to this checkbox instead of NULL.
In the flat file SampleID and Product are populated in the first row only, rest of the rows only have values for Rep_Number, Protein, Fat, Solids.
SampleID and Product are blank for the rest of the rows. So my task is to fill those blank rows with the first row that has the sampleID and Product and load into the table.
I have a report that is run on a monthly basis with a default date of null. The stored procedure determines the month-end date that it should use should it be sent a null date.
The report works fine when I tell it to create a history entry; however, when I try to add a subscription it doesn't appear to like the null parameter value. Since I have told the report to have a default value of null it doesn't allow me to enter a value on the subscription page.
Now, I suppose I could remove the parameter altogether from the stored proc, but then the users would never be able to run the report for a previous time period. Can someone explain to me why default values aren't allowed to be used on subscriptions when they seem to work fine for ad hoc and scheduled reports? This is really quite frustrating as most of my reports require a date value and default to null so that the user doesn't have to enter them for the latest data.
An internal error occurred on the report server. See the error log for more details. (rsInternalError) Get Online Help
I run a stored procedure for which I have a return variable. The stored procedure returns the ID of a row in a table if it exists:
m_sqlCmd.ExecuteScalar();
The m_sqlCmd has been fed an SQLParameter with direction set to output. When the stored proc returns, I want to test it. Now when there IS a row it returns the ID ok. When the row doesn't exist, in my watch I have:
m_sqlParam.SqlValue with value {Null}
I can't seem to work out how to test this value out. I've tried several things but none seem to work.
This line compiles ok, but the following runs into the IF statement as if the SqlValue is null??
if (m_sqlParam.SqlValue != null).... {
// I'm here!! I thought the watch says this is null??? }
Sorry if this is obvious, but I can't work this one out!!
Looks like there was a fix and then I read this fix is not a fix. Does anyone know how this can be rectified? Does it mean that only Windows authentiation is the only way it works. The Software is over 2 years old, there are no excuses.
I am writing a pgm that attaches to a SQL Server database. I have an Add stored procedure and an Update stored procedure. The two are almost identical, except for a couple parameters. However, the Add function works and the Update does not. Can anyone see why? I can't seem to find what the problem is...
This was my test:
Dim cmd As New SqlCommand("pContact_Update", cn) 'Dim cmd As New SqlCommand("pContact_Add", cn)
Catch ex As Exception Label1.Text = ex.Message End Try
When I use the Add procedure, a record is added correctly and I receive the "done" message. When I use the Update procedure, the record is not updated, but I still receive the "done" message.
I have looked at the stored procedures and the syntax is correct according to SQL Server.
I am getting this error: "Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'OrderID', table 'outman.outman.Contact'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails." -- But my value is not null. I did a response.write on it and it show the value. Of course, it would be nice if I could do a breakpoint but that doesn't seem to be working. I'll attach a couple of images below of my code, the error, and the breakpoint error.
