Passing Null Values To Stored Procedures

Aug 29, 2006

Version: ASP.Net 2.0
Language: C#
Hello Everyone!
I'm saving data from a function to an SQL Server 2000 db via a stored procedure. There are a few fields which are conditional and thus need not be passed to the procedure everytime. Under those circumstances I need to store null values in the fields.
The problem is if I the value of the parameter as null, VS throws the error that a required parameter is not passed. I tried setting 'IsNullable' property of the parameter to true but it works for only those fields who are declared NULL in the stored procedure (For e.g. @DOB DATETIME = NULL).

Strangely, this works well in classic ASP.

Does anyone know how to accomplish this? Note, altering stored procedures is not an option for me.

Thanks a lot!

Proper Use Of Null Values In Stored Procedures

Oct 25, 2000

If I have a stored proc which has 2 input variables and for example
the 2nd one is null or not provided what is the best way to turn this null
into a wildcard. If the second one is an int and not provided should I
but a checknull statement in the proc and convert this to a wildcard %. I believe if I do I need to change the where clause "where field1 = @var "
to where field1 like @var". Any input appreciated

Passing Arrays To Stored Procedures

Feb 23, 2004

Dear all,

i want to know how i can pass multiple values in the form of arrays to a stored procedures.

the technique by which i pass multiple values to a stored procedure beginning along with declarations are as follows:

Dim configurationAppSettings As System.Configuration.AppSettingsReader = New System.Configuration.AppSettingsReader()
Me.cmdInsSlabHmst = New System.Data.OleDb.OleDbCommand()
Me.OleDbConnection1 = New System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnection()
Me.cmdInsSlabDMst = New System.Data.OleDb.OleDbCommand()
'
'cmdInsSlabHmst
'
Me.cmdInsSlabHmst.CommandText = "PKGSLABHMST.INSSLABHMST"
Me.cmdInsSlabHmst.CommandType = System.Data.CommandType.StoredProcedure
Me.cmdInsSlabHmst.Connection = Me.OleDbConnection1
Me.cmdInsSlabHmst.Parameters.Add(New System.Data.OleDb.OleDbParameter("iSLABDESC", System.Data.OleDb.OleDbType.VarChar, 50))
Me.cmdInsSlabHmst.Parameters.Add(New System.Data.OleDb.OleDbParameter("iSLABUNIT", System.Data.OleDb.OleDbType.VarChar, 1))
Me.cmdInsSlabHmst.Parameters.Add(New System.Data.OleDb.OleDbParameter("iREMARKS", System.Data.OleDb.OleDbType.VarChar))
Me.cmdInsSlabHmst.Parameters.Add(New System.Data.OleDb.OleDbParameter("iSLABFROM", System.Data.OleDb.OleDbType.VarChar))

Me.cmdInsSlabHmst.Parameters.Add(New System.Data.OleDb.OleDbParameter("iNOOFRECORDS", System.Data.OleDb.OleDbType.Integer))
'
'OleDbConnection1
'
Me.OleDbConnection1.ConnectionString = CType(configurationAppSettings.GetValue("ConnectionString", GetType(System.String)), String)

'Passing multiple values to the procedure with the help of ~ sign

strSlabFrom = CType(dgSlabDtl.Items(i).FindControl("txtSlabFrom"), TextBox).Text
Else

strSlabFrom = CType(dgSlabDtl.Items(i).FindControl("lblSlabFrom"), Label).Text
End If

strSlabFromP += strSlabFrom & "~"
intCntr += 1
'If dblSlabRate <> "" And dblSlabFrom <> "" Then

'End If
Next
If strSlabRateP <> "" And strSlabFrom <> "" Then
With cmdInsSlabHmst
.Parameters("iSLABDESC").Value = UCase(txtSlabDesc.Text)
.Parameters("iSLABUNIT").Value = ddlSalbUnit.SelectedItem.Value
.Parameters("iREMARKS").Value = txtRemarks.Text
.Parameters("iSLABFROM").Value = strSlabFromP
.Parameters("iSLABRATE").Value = strSlabRateP
.Parameters("iNOOFRECORDS").Value = intCntr
End With
OleDbConnection1.Open()
cmdInsSlabHmst.ExecuteNonQuery()
OleDbConnection1.Close()
End If

to the insert procedure i am passing multiple values with the help of ~ sign and in the procedure the individual values are separated by identifying the position of ~ sign and the no. of records which have been passed. For which a complicated stored procedure has been written.

i want to pass multiple values in an array, so that my stored procedure becomes simple and runs faster. So, if someone tells me how to pass arrays to a stored procedure (with code example), it will be of real help.

Passing Parameters To Stored Procedures

Feb 17, 2005

Hello,

I seached around for an answer to this question but didn't have much luck. Hopefully someone can help.

I am passing two parameters from a web page to a stored procedure. The first paramater @Field is the name of the field in the database I want to search, the second @Value is the value to seach for. The @Value works fine but the SP does not seem to recongnize the field parameter. I'm not sure if what I am attemping is not supported or wheather I just need to format the @Field in a different manner. The code and stored procedure is below.

Thanks for your help, Gary

Here is the web code:

Dim conMSS As New SqlConnection(ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings("dsnMSS"))
Dim cmdItems As New SqlCommand("DS-SPRS.dbo.s_ItemLookUp", conMSS)

cmdItems.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
cmdItems.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@Field", SqlDbType.VarChar, 50))
cmdItems.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@Value", SqlDbType.VarChar, 50))

cmdItems.Parameters("@Value").Value = txtValue.Text & "%"
cmdItems.Parameters("@Field").Value = lstField.SelectedValue

conMSS.Open()
dgdItems.DataSource = cmdItems.ExecuteReader
dgdItems.DataBind()
conMSS.Close()

Here is the stored procedure:

CREATE PROCEDURE s_ItemLookUp

@Field AS VARCHAR(50),
@Value AS VARCHAR(50)

AS

SELECT DIV_NO, DIV_NM, LN_NO, LN_DS, ITM_NO, PRD_DS, ITM_MFG_NO, VND_HFC_NM
FROM PRODUCT
WHERE @Field LIKE @Value
ORDER BY DIV_NO, LN_NO, ITM_NO

Passing Arrays To Stored Procedures?

Feb 20, 2003

Someone recently tried to tell me that it is possible to pass an array to a stored procedure.

I have tried creating procedures with the 'table' datatype for the parameters but the attempts fail with a syntax error.

We currently workaround this limitation by passing the equivalent of an array to temporary tables and selecting from those tables as needed within our stored procedure but if we can circumvent this by passing an array, we'd definetly like to try that instead.

Thanks in advance for any advice you may share.

DNN DAL SqlDataProvider Passing NULL To SQL Stored Procedure

Jun 1, 2006

Hello,I'm trying to pass a null object to a stored procedure to update a SQL Table boolean field with a null value.  My SQL Table boolean column allows nulls.I'm using an InfoObject which has several properties all corresponding to fields in the SQL Table.  One of those fields is a boolean.  I create an instance of the InfoObject in my code and assigns values to the various properties.  The boolean property in question (call it InfoOjbect.BooleanProperty) is not assigned anything.  I then call my StoredProcedure passing the InfoObject to it (using the DotNetNuke DAL architecture) and the final result is the Table's boolean column is populated with a 0 and not a NULL.  If I explicitly define the InfoObject.BooleanProperty = null.nullboolean before passing it to the Stored Procedure, the same thing happens.  How do I pass a null to the SQL database for a boolean field?  I've tried making InfoObject.BooleanProperty = dbnull.value but it won't let me do this saying "dbnull cannot be converted to a boolean."  Do I have to explicitly create my InfoObject properties to allow for a null to be assigned to it?Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I'm using the DotNetNuke DAL architecture passing my InfoObject through a dataprovider to the sqldataprovider which calls the SQL Stored Procedure to add the new record to the Table.Thanks in advance for any help.

Parameter Passing - Table Name & Column Name In Stored Procedures

Mar 9, 2001

How can a Stored Procedure use a variable table name and column name ?

The statement :-

SELECT @columnname FROM @tablename

gives error "Line 5: Incorrect syntax near '@tablename'."

I am passing the parameters 'tablename' and 'columnname' into the stored procedure, (in order to select a variable column from a variable table).

If I hard-code the tablename, then I get a column of output with just the name of the column I was trying to list, e.g. surname,

i.e. SELECT @columnname FROM employeetable gives :-

surname
surname
surname
surname
surname
surname

How can I get the procedure to accept a variable table name and column name ?

I thought one way to do it would be to use the 'EXEC' statement :-

SELECT @sql = 'SELECT '+ @columnname +' FROM '+@tablename
EXEC(@sql)

but this gives error : "Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'FROM' "

although the following table works :-

SELECT @sql = 'SELECT surname FROM '+@tablename
EXEC(@sql)

The problem seems to be mainly with variable column names.

Also, we don't really want to use the EXEC statement because it will not be compiled and will be slower. (Does anyone know by how much slower ?)

Any advice would be appreciated.

Kind regards,
Ian.

Passing Null To Stored Procedure In Reporting Services

Jun 27, 2007

Hello,

I have a report. I need to make a drop-down parameter optional. I've setup the parameter to use a dataset as its source, and I need to allow the value to be null. I've selected allow nulls check box, and I've even tried setting the default value to System.DBNull.Value. But, when the entry is not selected (blank), no data ever comes back. If the data is blank or null, my procedure works (I've tested it). How do I send a null value to the database through reporting services report? I was hoping to avoid creating a special query just for that purpose.

Thanks.

Passing Parameters To Action Stored Procedures Using ADO, In Access Project

Jul 20, 2005

There is a form in an Access Project (.adp, Access front end with SQLServer) for entering data into a table for temporary storing. Then, byclicking a botton, several action stored procedures (update, append) shouldbe activated in order to transfer data to other tables.I tried to avoid any coding in VB, as I am not a professional, but I havefound a statement in an article, that, unlike select queries, form's InputProperty can't be used for action queries. Therefore, parameters can bepassed to action stored procedure only by using ADO through VB.As I'm not very familiar with VB, I had to search in literature.So, this is a solution based on creating Parameter object in ADO and thenappending values to Parameter collection.Please, consider the following procedure I created for passing parametersfrom form's control objects (Text boxes) to a stored procedureDTKB_MB_UPDATE:Private Sub Command73_Click()Dim cmd As ADODB.CommandSet cmd = New ADODB.Commandcmd.ActiveConnection = CurrentProject.Connectioncmd.CommandText = "DTKB_MB_UPDATE"cmd.CommandType = adCmdStoredProcDim par As ADODB.ParameterSet par = cmd.CreateParameter("@DATE", adDBTimeStamp, adParamInput)cmd.Parameters.Append parSet par = cmd.CreateParameter("@BATCH_NUMBER", adVarWChar, adParamInput, 50)cmd.Parameters.Append parSet par = cmd.CreateParameter("@STATUS", adVarWChar, adParamInput, 50)cmd.Parameters.Append parSet par = cmd.CreateParameter("@DEPARTMENT", adVarWChar, adParamInput, 50)cmd.Parameters.Append parSet par = cmd.CreateParameter("@PRODUCTION", adVarWChar, adParamInput, 50)cmd.Parameters.Append parSet par = cmd.CreateParameter("@SAMPLING_TYPE", adVarWChar, adParamInput,50)cmd.Parameters.Append parcmd.Parameters("@DATE") = Me.DATEcmd.Parameters("@BATCH_NUMBER") = Me.BATCH_NUMBERcmd.Parameters("@STATUS") = Me.STATUScmd.Parameters("@DEPARTMENT") = Me.DEPARTMENTcmd.Parameters("@PRODUCTION") = Me.PRODUCTIONcmd.Parameters("@SAMPLING_TYPE") = Me.SAMPLING_TYPEcmd.ExecuteSet cmd = NothingEnd SubUnfortunately, when clicking on the botton, the following error apears:"Run-time error'-2147217913 (80040e07)':Syntax error converting datetimefrom character string."Obviously, there is some problem regarding parameter @DATE. In SQL Server itis datetime, on the form's onbound text box it is short date (dd.mm.yyyy)data type. I have found in literature that in ADO it should beadDBTimeStamp.So, what is the problem ?Greetings,Zlatko

Trouble With Passing Values To Stored Procedure

Feb 13, 2008

Hi All, I'm a newbie learning windows applications in visual basic express edition, am using sqlexpress 2005 So i have a log in form with username and password text fields.the form passes these values to stored procedure 'CheckUser' Checkuser then returns a value for groupid. If its 1 they are normal user, if its 2 its admin user. Then opens another form called Organisations, and closes the log in form. However when i run the project, and enter a username and password and press ok ti tells me that there is incorrect syntax beside a line. I have no idea, and I'm sure that there is probably other things wrong in there. here is the code for the login button click event:  Public Class Login Dim connString As String = "server = .SQL2005;" & "integrated security = true;" & "database = EVOC"
'Dim connString As String = _ '"server = .sqlexpress;" _ '& "database = EVOC;" _ '& "integrated security = true;"

Private Sub OK_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Login_Log_In.Click ' Create connection
Dim conn As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection(connString) ' Create command

Dim cmd As SqlCommand = New SqlCommand() cmd.Connection = conn cmd.CommandText = "CheckUser"

Dim inparam1 As SqlParameter = cmd.Parameters.Add("@Username", SqlDbType.NVarChar) inparam1.Value = Login_Username.ToString Dim inparam2 As SqlParameter = cmd.Parameters.Add("@Password", SqlDbType.NVarChar) inparam2.Value = Login_Password.ToString inparam1.Direction = ParameterDirection.Input inparam2.Direction = ParameterDirection.Input 'Return value
Dim return_value As SqlParameter = cmd.Parameters.Add("@return_value", SqlDbType.Int) return_value.Direction = ParameterDirection.ReturnValue cmd.Connection.Open() Dim rdr As SqlDataReader = cmd.ExecuteReader Dim groupID As Integer

groupID = return_value.Value

If groupID < 0 Then
MessageBox.Show("Access is Denied") Else Dim Username = Me.Login_Username Dim org As New Organisations org.Show() End If

conn.Close()

End Sub The stored procedure code is ok as i know it works as it should, but if it helps the code is: ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[CheckUser] -- Add the parameters for the stored procedure here
@UserName nvarchar(50) = N'', @Password nvarchar(50) = N''
ASBEGIN
-- SET NOCOUNT ON added to prevent extra result sets from-- interfering with SELECT statements.
SET NOCOUNT ON; -- Insert statements for procedure here
IF (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM dbo.EVOC_Users WHERE Username=@Username AND Password=@Password)=1BEGINPRINT 'User ' + @Username + ' exists'
SELECT TOP 1 UserGroup FROM dbo.EVOC_Users WHERE Username=@Username AND Password=@PasswordRETURN (SELECT TOP 1 UserGroup FROM dbo.EVOC_Users WHERE Username=@Username AND Password=@Password)ENDELSE BEGINPRINT 'User ' + @Username + ' does not exist'
RETURN (-1)ENDEND
 All help greatly appreciated to get me past this first hurdle in my first application!! CheersTom

Passing Values From A Gridview To A Stored Procedure

May 7, 2008

Hello. im tryinng to build an application that has a girdview with values from 2 different tables. The select query i have used in a stored procedure works great but when i try to write something to update into 2 different tables I cant figure out how to do it.
This is the first time im writing stored procedures but from what i can tell i need to do 2 seperate updates to insert mu values.
im using the AdventureWorksLT database provided by microsoft to experiment with and my gridview consists of 2 tables populated by the following stored procedure:ALTER PROCEDURE dbo.GetSomething AS
SELECT Customer.CustomerID, Customer.LastName, Customer.FirstName, CustomerAddress.AddressID, CustomerAddress.AddressType FROM SalesLT.Customer, SalesLT.CustomerAddress
WHERE Customer.CustomerID = CustomerAddress.CustomerID

RETURN
What id like to do is to make the GridView editable and then send the all thee values back so the changes are saved in both tables. Could anyone help me write a stored procedure that gets the values from the fields in the gridview that is beeing changed and send them back to the tables?

Passing Compound Primary Key Values To A Stored Procedure Using ADO.NET

Apr 10, 2008

Hi all,
I've had this problem for a while now and I'm looking for a better solution.

I'm pulling through a dataset from a SQL Server 2005 database and populating it into a DataGridView. The end user updates information on the grid and I then want to updates the results in the SQL Server table. My table has a compound primary key made up of two fields.

I'm currently looping through the data grid and for each value identified to update I'm executing a stored procedure that takes the two fields as parameters. However I know that this method isn't very efficient, especially if the user wants to update a few hundred records as it will execute the stored procedure a few hundred times.

Is there a way I can pass the two parameters in an ArrayList or something like that? I need SQL Server to be able to take the parameter. Is XML the way to go or is there any additional support in the .NET framework for such problems?

Thanks for your help.

Compressing Multiple Rows With Null Values To One Row With Out Null Values After A Pivot Transform

Jan 25, 2008

I have a pivot transform that pivots a batch type. After the pivot, each batch type has its own row with null values for the other batch types that were pivoted. I want to group two fields and max() the remaining batch types so that the multiple rows are displayed on one row. I tried using the aggregate transform, but since the batch type field is a string, the max() function fails in the package. Is there another transform or can I use the aggragate transform another way so that the max() will work on a string?

Return Distinct Values From Stored Procedures

I need to somehow filter the results of my stored procedure to return the distinct "OrderNum" values. I'm using SQL database and I'm look for a way to alter the results from the stored procedure. My stored procedure rptOpenOrderLines currently returns all invoices (items under a OrderNum). I want to somehow filter those results to return one and only one of those "OrderNum" variables from the invoices. The tricky part is that I need to somehow find a way to do this without going into my database and directly altering the SQL stored procedure. I would be happy for any recommendations/ideas. Thanks!

CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.GetTillInfo
(
@TillIdR varchar(50),
@Password varchar(50)
)
AS

declare @TillId int
declare @configpath varchar(150)

IF Exists (SELECT Id FROM Tills WHERE TillRef=@TillId and TillPassword=@Password)
BEGIN

set @TillIdR = (SELECT Id FROM Tills WHERE TillRef=@TillId and TillPassword=@Password)
select @TillIdR as 'TId'

set @configpath = (SELECT configpath from customer,tills where
tills.customerid = customer.id and tills.id = @login)
select @configpath as 'ConfigPath'
END
ELSE

Send Null Values To A Stored Procedure In C#

Jul 11, 2007

Hi
 I am new to C# . I have a stored procedure which takes 4 parameters
GetSearchComplaint( Comp_ID , strViolator, strSts, FromDate, ToDate), These parameters can be null.
 And i have 5 textboxes from which i send the parameters.
I am validating the input like this :System.Nullable<int> Comp_ID;
 if ((txtsrchCompID.Text).Trim() == "")
{Comp_ID = null;
}else if ((txtsrchCompID.Text).Trim() == "")
{
try
{int i = int.Parse(txtsrchCompID.Text);
Comp_ID =i;
catch
{mesage += "Complaint ID is not valid";
}
}

When i run this i get this error  ---'Use of unassigned local variable 'Comp_ID'
I get the same error for FromDate(DateTime) and ToDate(DateTime) . but not for string variables   strViolator and strSts.
How do i pass the null value to the stored procedure? pls help..

Retrieving Scalar Or Calculated Values From Stored Procedures With C#

Feb 4, 2007

I am trying to build an Sql page hit provider.  I am having trouble getting a count back from the database.  If I use ExecuteScalar it doesn't see any value in the returned R1C1.  If I use ExecuteNonQuery with a @ReturnValue, the return value parameter value is always zero.  Ideally I would like to use a dynamic stored proceudre if there are any suggestions for using them with C#.  My table has rvPathName, userName and a date.  I have the AddWebPageHit method working so I know data connection and sql support code in provider is working.  I think the problem is either in how I am writing the stored procedures or how I am trying to retrieve the data in C#.  Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

Eradicate Null Values From Stored Procedure Input

Apr 7, 2008

my stored procedure is

create procedure t1 (@a int,@b int,@c int,@d int,@e int,@f int)
as
begin
select no,name,department from emp where a = @a and b =@b orc =@c or
d = @d or e = @e or f = @f
end

my problem is while executing i may get null values as input to the stored procedure .
how to validate them ? any ideas .
are there any arrays.
if c and d are null then my condition would be
where a = @a and b =@b or e = @e or f = @f
how many loops shall i have to write.
