Passwords Fields As Binary In Table
Oct 5, 2001
Has anyone worked with storing alphanumeric passwords as binary fields in databases? I have worked up the following command to convert an NVARCHAR field to a BINARY type and it seems to work fine.
UPDATE USERS SET USERPASS=CAST(CAST('TEST' AS NCHAR(5)) AS BINARY) WHERE USERID='USER1
But, I can just as easily convert it back to NVARCHAR and obtain the password with this command:
SELECT CAST(CAST(USERPASS AS NCHAR(20)) AS NVARCHAR(20)) FROM USERS WHERE USERID='USER1'
I guess my question is how can I encrypt the password to make it more difficult to convert back to NVARCHAR?

In the code sample below, case eLABEL, eENGUNITS works ok. The target SQL field is defined as varchar(50).
The second section is not so happy. It is attempting to write to an SQL field defined as binary(2)
Executing an SQL script to excercise this line results in error:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'foreign'
where 'foreign' is the name (FieldDef.sFldName) of the SQL field being written.
The c# code composes the following command:
"UPDATE " + acPointType + " SET " + FieldDef.sFldName +
" = @data_params WHERE VEC = '" + acVECName +
"' and name = '" + acPointName + "';";
What is the proper syntax for the second case set?
Code Snippet
case vcidatatype.eLABEL:
case vcidatatype.eENGUNITS:
{
byte[] bbuff = new byte[512];
bbuff = rdr.ReadBytes(FieldDef.iLen);
vciSqlCommand.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@data_params", SqlDbType.VarBinary));
vciSqlCommand.Parameters["@data_params"].Value = bbuff;
break;
}
case vcidatatype.eFIDADR:
case vcidatatype.eLANADR:
{
byte[] bbuf = new byte[512] ;
bbuf = rdr.ReadBytes(2);
vciSqlCommand.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@data_params", SqlDbType.Binary));
vciSqlCommand.Parameters["@data_params"].Value = bbuf;
break;
}

Users were able tolog on to our SQL 2000 servers with their passwords being case-insensitive.
Now with SQL 2005 some users can't logon because SQL 2005 passwords are case-sensitive.
Can SQL 2005 be configured so that passwords are NOT case sensitive???
Thanks!

Server is SQL 2000
I have a table with 10 rows with a varbinary column
I wish to concatenate all the binary column into a single binary column and then write that to another table within the database. This application splits a binary file (Word or PDF document) into multiple segments (this is Column2 as below)
example as follows
TableA
Column1 Column2 Column3
aaa 001 <some binary value>
aaa 002 <some binary value>
aaa 003 <some binary value>
aaa 004 <some binary value>
aaa 005 <some binary value>
desired results in TableB
Column1 Column2
aaa <concatenated value of above binary columns>

I have a list of items in one table and a field (pageName) in another table that may contain one of the aforementioned items somewhere within that field. There is no fixed position within the field where the itemNo may be so I can't just use SUBSTRING(pageName,2,5) in(select itemNo from tblItem).
Logically, it's like I need to combine IN and LIKE: select pageName where pageName LIKE IN %select itemNo from tblitemNo%..LIKE can only handle one comparison string.

I have run into a challenge that I'm not sure how to best solve. I'dappreciate any opinions or input.I am working with a third party database. They are storing some datathat I need to use in a binary field. I've got the code to parse thebinary and reconstruct what I need. Unfortunately, there might bemultiple "entries" stored in a single binary field. a certain byte,let's just say the first, will always be the count of "entries" inthis particular SQL entry.An example:then entry might be:0x01000012341234where 12341234 is the data entry that I will parse.Another possible entry is:0x03000012341234567856789ABC9ABCThe first byte indicates that there are three data values I want toparse out:12341234567856789ABC9ABCThe portions of the binary I need are always the same length and theremay be from 1 to ~100 of them. (usually 1 if it matters.)The big question:How could a SQL query return an entry for each of the "entries" in thebinary field? For the second example I would want three entries in myresults, each row returning a different section of the binary data.For the first, only one row. I'll be querying the set and expecting toget back more results than the number of entries in the set.I haven't really tried much with this yet, (other than some mentalcalisthenics were I fell down onto the mat pretty hard), so just somedirection on where to begin would be helpful.(Yes, I understand that the difficulty is that this data shouldn't bestored this way, but there is not much I can do about that.)Thanks...James FraserJoin Bytes!

I'm using a bit-wise comparison to effectively store multiple values in one column. However once the number of values increases it starts to become too big for a int data type.you also cannot perform a bitwise & on two binary datatypes. Is there a better way to store the binary data rather than int or binary?

I have a table called 'Articles' whose columns are articleId (int), authorName (varchar) and article (binary). The primary key is articleId. I tried using DTS wizard available in Enterprise Manager 2000, to import the data from this table into a remote database table, but the data copy failed. I am thinking the binary column is causing the DTS data copy to fail.
If someone could tell me what else I could do to transfer binary data to remote database(like an example of a data transfer query), then that would help me greatly.

First of all let me say that ASP.NET a new programming environment for me so please forgive my ignorance.
Can someone please tell me how to write data to a SQL table that is a Binary data type? I have a stored procedure on the SQL server that I am calling to insert data into a table. I build a parameter list and set the values. It worked just fine before I added a binary field to the SQL table. My problem is that I don't know how to set the Binay data type to pass it to the stored procedure. Here is part of the code:
GetCMD = Myconnection.CreateCommand
GetCMD.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
GetCMD.CommandText = "SCHEMANAME.InsertLineItem"
GetCMD.Parameters.Add("HEADER_ID", SqlDbType.VarChar, 150)
GetCMD.Parameters("HEADER_ID").Value = "some value"
GetCMD.Parameters.Add("@OPTIONS", SqlDbType.Binary)
GetCMD.Parameters("@OPTIONS").Value = HOW DO I SET THIS VALUE????
rowsaffected = GetCMD.ExecuteNonQuery()
I assume serialization but have not figured out how. Anyone's help is greatly appreciated!!

I am trying to produce a matrix (crosstab) report in SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services Report Designer, where the column headers contain a binary data type storing a png image.
By just simply using the report wizard and assigning the binary (image) data value to the column headers, and then previewing the report, I get following error:
An error occurred during local report processing.An error has occurred during report processing.The Group expression used in grouping 'matrix1_COMPETITOR_EMBLEM' returned a data type that is not valid.
Is there any way to include binary data types, or images per se from the database into a matrix or even table item in a report ?

I'm working on a report to show financial transactions from a table over a certain period. For most transactions there is a PDF document that is stored in a separate table in a binairy format. In my report I would like to include a link on every line with transaction information in the report that opens the PDF that is linked to that transaction. Just to be clear, I don't want to embed the PDF in the report but I want the users of the report to have the option to view the PDF that is related to that transaction in their standard pdf reader (adobe).
Code to do the following:
Once a user clicks on the link to view the PDF I need the code to get the binairy data of the PDF file from the table, convert it back to a PDF and open it in the default pdf reader (for example adobe reader). If it can't directly open the file then it's maybe possible to activate the 'open or download' pop up that you also get when you download something from a website.

Hello all:
Is it possible to creates fields of the table dynamically?. I have this situation in my project. This is just a small sample. I have row of length 140. I don't wan't to declare all this fields manually using the create table command.
The description of table is as, in this table all the field are of type varchar only, there are like 140 columns.
create dummy emp (
field1 VARCHAR(100), field2 varchar(200), field3 VARCHAR(100).... )
Table: Dummy
================================================== ==
field1 field2 field3..........
Empid Empname empaage1 sam 23...........
2 rai 22............
.
.
.
n raj 45.............
================================================== ==
Now I want to create another table as "EMP" , with proper data type
fields too..
create table emp (
empid int, empname varchar(100), empage int....)
The table should look like as:
Table: EMP
================================================== ==
Empid Empname empaage............
1 sam 23...............
2 rai 22................
.
.
.
n raj 45.................
================================================== ==
I want to do this dynamically.....
Some how I need to extract those field from table[dummy]; the first row acts as a column header for the table[Emp] and the subsequent row acts as a record for the table[Emp]
A small rough snippet of the code will be appreciated....
Waiting for replies........

All- Supposing I have table_a and table_b. Table_a has fields FIRST_A and LAST_A for people's first and last names. Similarly, table_b has FIRST_B and LAST_B for people's first and last names.
How would I create a record in table_b for each record in table_a, such that for each added record, the values of FIRST_A is copied to FIRST_B and LAST_A is copied to LAST_B. (Table_b will have other fields that are left unfilled.)
Thanks!

I want to let a user a fields and select the data type and size from a short list. For example: nvarchar(?), Money, Int, or Bit. These are most likely the only choices for now. There will be a web page that lets them enter a field name and select a data type.
Can someone suggest how the sproc might look? Here is what I have so far.
CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].AddCustomField ASALTER TABLE MyDataSQL.dbo.tblCustomFields ADD @FieldName @FieldDataType NULLGO

I would like to store all information on them in this table but that amounts to quite a lot of fields (about 50) and some of these will store a lot of HTML text in them.
Is it best to split the table up for performance reasons or will it make little difference?
Thanks,

For example

Is there a way to somehow reorder these fields and then compare using SQL?

Hi,
I am new to sql and is working with sql server managment 2005 +c# 2005.
My application needs to create a blockdiagram sort of thing say
if in my database i got a table 'Addition' with 'a', 'b', 'c',and the primary key addition_id, and c is related to a and b as c = a+ b.
there is stored procedure name usp_addition which contains this relation. Each time any insert or update is done this sp is executed and all the values are updated for accordingly.
My problem starts in the front end where i need to draw the graphical representation of table addition.
In this graphical representation, I need to draw the labels a, b, c and the arrows from a and b which will connect to c, showing that c has a, b as inputs.
I got the label using dataset and datacolumns but hte problem is how to create the arrows the name of labels (i.e my column names from which the arrow should start and end)
How does I get the information that c as two inputs a, b. I dont need the values since i just want to view the columns in table and which column is input to another column.
Since I need to do this dynamically because my tablename, and the number and name of column would differ does any body knows how to do this.

I'm kind of new to SQL and would appreciate some help with this. I have a table named Company. In this table there are fields called CompanyID, CompanyName, Address, and Year. (There are other fields too, but they are not relevant for this post.) There are multiple companies in the table and each company has a unique ID number. However, each company can have up to three records in the table. (One for the year 2005, one for the year 2006, and one for the year 2007.) Currently, only a company's 2007 record has data for the address. It's 2005 and 2006 records have addresses that are blank. I want to be able to update the 2005 and 2006 records with address from the 2007 record. Obviously, a very simple update won't work because there are multiple companies and multiple records that need updating. Can anyone fill me in on the SQL statement(s) I would need to make this happen? I would be extremely appreciative.
