Well, I hope, after my endless search in the web... maybe, somebody can help me here.
I'm passing a application to a web-based application, therefore I have to use ADO.net to access a sql server DB. But the performance is extremly poor!!!!
Just to compare: with the normal application or with the SQL Query Analyzer, the query needs about 2 seconds. Well, by using ado.net, it's about 200 seconds......!!!!
Of course, the query is quite long. But the difference is extrem... too extrem for using the same query....
I already tried a lot... actually everything I found on the web. What is really strange is that neither the processor nor the memory is fully used... And the web server use more of the cpu power than the sql server itself (the 2 server are still on my machine where I'm programming). So, could it be that the problem is by filling up the dataset with the sqladapter or something similar?
I think this might be a good place to ask the following question.
I am writing the error handling code for my data access layer for a web application. I am using the Enterprise Library Data Access Application Block. Although this supports generic database connections, I realized that I need to handle errors specific to each database type. Microsoft SQL is the only database type I am using for now, so I am using a try...catch (SqlException e).
In testing my code, I intentionally changed the instance name in web.config to a name that does not exist. I get the very popular error 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified. This is returned as a SqlException, but the SqlError.Number property is set to -1.
Am I getting "-1" because the provider hasn't actually connected to SQL yet, so it doesn't have an actual SQL error number? Can I assume that (SqlError.Number == -1) is always a fatal, provider-level connection exception? Will the provider ever use another SqlError.Number of its own? Or do all numbers besides -1 come from the SQL sysmessages table?. Is there a comprehensive list of what exceptions might be raised by the SqlClient provider, including #26?
The reason for all the questions is that in a web application, I want to prevent the end-user from seeing the "real" exception if it has to do with configuration errors. However, maybe there are other errors that the user should see and handle? It's hard to know without a full list of SqlClient provider errors, along with the SqlError.Number that each error maps to.
While learning ASP.net 2.0, I was taught that the the default provider for the SqlDataSource was System.Data.SqlClient, and that I only needed to specify it as a provider when I put it in the web.config file. However, now (in VWDE 2008) when I add a SqlDataSource to a page, it adds ProviderName="System.Data.SqlClient". Does this mean that it isnt the default anymore?
Does anyone else have this error message pop up in SSMS when you try to parse sql statements:
.Net SqlClient Data Provider: Msg 0, Level 11, State 0, Line 0
A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.
There was a thread back in March 2006 that mentioned this error, but the posted resolution was to install SP1. I have SP1 installed but I still get the error.
I only receive the error when I'm parsing statements, if I run the statement it's fine.
trying to connect to sql server 2005 over the internet. (its a third paty hosting company i'm using)

i have added sql serer managemnt studio to the exceptions list in the firewall.
ihave made sure tcpip is enabled in the sql server connection management console.
i have also enabled it in the cliconfg tool
firewall on/off seems to make no difference.
its almost enough to make you turn to oracle and thats saying something considering how long i've been in the microsoft camp...
the error returned is: Login failed for user 'SQL2005_152092_garethbowen'. (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)

Aaarrgghhhhhhh, still searchin' for a nice step-by-step article to learn data access (all insert delete update commands) with the SQL Server .NET Data Provider found in [System.Data.SqlClient] namespace....
Hi! I have just installed Microsoft OLEDB provider for DB2 on a SQL server 2005. I created a Linked server against our DB2 V.8 Z/OS database. I tested the connection via execution of a simple select call, something like:
SELECT FIELD_A FROM DB2SRV.DB2DB.CREATOR_A.TABLE_A WHERE FIELD_A='ABC'
I traced the call on the DB2 site. The SQL running on DB2 site was to my surprise without the €śwhere clause€?:
SELECT FIELD_A FROM DB2DB.CREATOR_A.TABLE_A
So, all rows are moved to SQL server before the where clause is executed, resulting in bad performance. The index on FIELD_A is not used and so on €¦ !
If anyone out there has an idea of what could be wrong, please let me know!
NB. I know that by using OPENQUERY pass-through query, all execution is done on the DB2 site.
i have installed visual express and sql express. but the problem is i want to add the connection string manuallty in visual studio express 2005. so i want to add a reference of sql.data.sqlclient but could not add ? i am not sure what is the problem or is am i missing anything
I am not able to add the namespace "system.data.SqlClient" and not able to get the intellisense for sqlconnections. I have only vs2005. i do not have sql management express or sql server 2005
I am new to ASP.NET and trying to learn. I am getting the problem when I try to insert data into SQL. The exception that I am getting is

I download the DAAB CF version. However, most of them use SQLCEClient to connect to the database. Is there any DAAB that use SQLClient? One workaround that I made is I replaced all SQLCEClient objects with the SQLClient objects. I only test one method "ExecuteDataset" and it works so far. However, my question is "does my workaround a good solution?"
Hi All, I have a form (asp website with the default.aspx and default.aspx.cs) which I use to connect to the SQL Server 2005 database and insert, update,get and delete data to and from it. In the table I have a column called Picture to insert a photo (usually bmp files) which I declared as a varbinary(max). ID is the primary key and is an int (i tried it to be numeric & varchar). I am trying to insert data into the table using a form with this syntax: SqlConnection enter_conn = new SqlConnection("user id=;" + "password=;server=servername;" + "Trusted_Connection=yes;" + "database=Member Profiles; " + "connection timeout=30"); enter_conn.Open(); string insertSql = "Insert dbo.Details(ID,Last_Name,First_Name,Middle_Initial,Project, Organization,Manager,Current_Skills,Biography,Hobbies, Picture) Select 1001, 'ABC','XYZ','R',' Website Development','ACT',LKM','ASP.Net, C#.Net, SQL Server 2005, SharePoint, Java, ',' developing the new website for ACT using SharePoint and SQL Server 2005', ' Singing, Listening to Music, Dancing, Cooking, Swimming', BulkColumn from Openrowset( Bulk 'C:\photos\rose.bmp', Single_Blob) as Picture";
SqlCommand myCommand = new SqlCommand(insertSql, enter_conn); int i = myCommand.ExecuteNonQuery();
I have no data in the table and am doing the first insert. Though the data gets inserted I am getting this exception: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'PK_Details'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'dbo.Details'. Yesterday, in response to an error msg (something like Login failed for user ''), I deleted the 'providerName=System.Data.SqlClient'in my connectionStrings from Web.config. Then the aspx website worked.I understand that the value "System.Data.SqlClient" specifies that ASP.NET should use the ADO.NET provider System.Data.SqlClient when making a connection. Why deleting providerName solved the error? Jeffrey
We are developing Asp.Net Application in following environment.
Windows 2003 Dot Net 2003 SQL Server 2000
Problem :
We have team of four people. We made one machine as database server and rest of the people trying to connect to that database server. we are getting error "SQL server not found.".
We are using following string as a connection string.
I am getting the exception -System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not respondingWhen I am executing the stored procedureHow to resolve this?
We have some big problems with our SQL Server 2000 database right now. The code has not been changed for over halv an year and some days ago we started to get this error.
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.
Both web and database server is running fine. Any help is appreciated!
(We are now pretty sure that all errors occurs when we are doing inserts to the database.)
I am not sure it is the right forum. The Exception is thrown in C# app while saving a few databases. Small databases are being saved OK but this one has 12,934,142KB after the last backup. I am not even sure what the words "last backup" mean in this case. It is possible that is the size of the database from two months ago when first the problem appeared. Since then I've neglected backup being preoccupied with other problems although the database grew.
The backup is executed by this store procedure:
USE [hist_OHLC] GO
SET ANSI_NULLS ON GO SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER OFF GO
ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[backUphist_OHLC] AS BEGIN SET NOCOUNT ON; ALTER DATABASE hist_OHLC SET RECOVERY FULL BACKUP DATABASE hist_OHLC TO DISK = 'L:SQLServerBackupshist_OHLChist_OHLCFullRM.bak' BACKUP LOG hist_OHLC TO DISK = 'L:SQLServerBackupshist_OHLChist_OHLCFullRM.log'; END
What can I do about it? What is the rational way of backing up databases of this size?
What is the rational way of maintaining databases of this size in SQLEXPRESS? Shall I perhaps break this database down into fragments?
The tables contain daily records, about 500 per day. I can conceivably create another database every month or so but it will be a hassle.
How can I increase the timeout?
I just repeated the backup. All databases have been saved except this last one--Imoved that backup operation down the chain to be the last one. One database with about 1.5GBytes was saved fine.
I checked the timeout it is 15 sec. One has not control over it in C#. It does not have a Set option.
15
MyHandler caught : Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.
