Performance Tool...must Be Working, It's Making Me Ask Questions! *LOL*

Feb 3, 2005

Hi all,

I have downloaded an evaluation copy of a SQL Server performance tool (a fancy version of the Profiler) called Speed Coefficient from Imceda. Pretty interesting so far, but some questions are forthcoming (and probably will continue to come as I drill down and learn more about performance thangs).

It tells me I have a recompilation that I did not expect, it says the reason is "object not found at compile time, deferred to run time", but doesn't do too well at specifically telling me which object it is complaining about (yeah, not REALLY a complaint, but perhaps more a "mention", but I digress...)

I thought originally it was, perhaps, an object that I had not referenced correctly, but as it turns out, it is, I believe, referring to a global temporary table one of my procs creates. Upon further reflection/introspection, it makes sense to me that this is the case, since it won't HAVE the temp table object to kick around until it is created at run time.

Does this make sense? If so, I guess this is one of those times where the tool just makes reference to a possible issue, but it's up to the user to understand what the underlying cause of the "mention" is, and to determine if it is "OK" to have the recompilation occur.

I have some questions on SSIS tool I tried to read many docs to understand SSIS.

Now I am looking forward for below questions.

How to use SSIS for :

1. How to Export data from SQL Server 2005 in to Access database using SSIS?

2. How to Import data from Access .mdb file to SQL Server 2005 database using SSIS?

3. How to Import Oracle10g data in to SQL Server 2005 databvase using SSIS?

4. How to Import Oracle10g Data to Access file using SSIS?

5. How to Import SQL Server 2000 data in to SQL Server 2005?

It will be great to have step by step explanation.
Thanks in advance.

Slow Performance When Making A Query

I have a table with about 20,000 records.  So, to minimise performance issues, i try to only retrieve the top 100 records.  The databaset retrieved can be paged and sorted.  Below is my code, but it's taking quite a while even to only load the 100 records.  Any suggestions?Private Sub BindGrid()        Dim connectionString As String = "MyConnectionString"        Dim dbConnection As System.Data.IDbConnection = New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection(connectionString)
         Dim queryString As String = "SELECT TOP 100 [Person].* FROM [Person] ORDER BY " & viewstate("sortField").ToString() & " " & viewstate("sortDirection").ToString()

Performance Questions

Jun 8, 2007

We have a production database that sits on a 4 proc server with 4 GB of memory and SAN disk storage via fiber. There are some stored procedures that run and they take approximately 10 minutes to run. A developer has SQL Server installed on his local pc that has 1 2.5 GHz processor and 2 GB of memory and the stored procedures run in approximately 2 minutes. I have updated statistics and rebuilt indexes to no avail. He is questioning why it runs so much faster on his smaller pc compared to the production environment. I have monitored CPU, Memory, and Disk Queue Length and none of these performance counters look concerning to me while the stored procedures are running.

Can anyone out there give me some input on what I could check to figure out why we are experiencing this performance difference?

Thanks,

Corey

Performance Questions For Gurus

Apr 15, 2003

We are new to SQL 2000, and would like to bounce a couple questions off some of you gurus out there.
We are using SQL Server 2000 to build a data repository to assist us in transitioning from our old flatfile legacy system to SAP. We are also looking to use the SQL Server 2000 repository to build a smallish Enterprise Data Warehouse on the same SQL 2000 platform.

Here is our problem:
We have SQL Server 2000 loaded on a little scrapper PC with 1.4GHZ single processor, 1GB of memory, and a single 40 GB IDE drive.

When we are initially loading any of our repository tables the process cruises along pretty well, even respective of trying to locate the record for update before doing an insert. But, if we do something as simple as selecting count(*) against the table that's loading, performance on the load goes to its knees.
We understand we're pretty much at the mercy of the hardware we have (that's the budget), but we'd like to get as much bang as we can out of what's there.

Our questions are:
1. Is there anything we can do with our server configuration (short of new hardware) that will help us?
2. Are there any recommendations as far as monitors to help us better tune this specific configuration?

Thanks in advance for any help.

SQL Server Disk Sub-system (overhaul) Performance Questions

Jul 20, 2005

I 'inherited' a group of SQL Server server class machines. They aretrue server technology but the disk sub-systems are lacking. There isone hot-swap backplane that all the drives share (with one SCSIchannel) thusly even though there are three logical drives (composedfrom 6 to 8 hard drives), they all go through one channel. This iscreating a performance issue that is noticable and can be seen invarious performance counters that Microsoft recommended one shouldmonitor in terms of disk I/O. For a cheaper 'fix', I can add aseperate two drive bay (with its own SCSI channel) with mirroreddrives. I would then mostly likely place the transaction log files onthis new channel. Or I could place the indices filegroup files onthis new channel for DBs with mainly searching going on (not muchupdating). If I went this route I would be leaning towards thetransaction log move since the second method would require me movingDBs around quite a bit. Any input on this solution (besides spendingmore money)?What I would prefer to do is get a better server class machine or addan external drive bay solution (not a SAN). I would try to get threeor four SCSI channels in the new hardware to split the differentfile/filegroups out (i.e. transaction logs files, data filegroup,indices filegroup, etc.). My only concern here is: would this moreexpensive solution be worth the money? As far as replacing servers, Ihave only two kinds of experience...replacing somewhat underpoweredservers with slightly less underpowered servers and replacing overkillservers with even more overkill servers. In both cases, the disksub-systems were fairly equivalent from the old system to the new one.Will going the three/four channel route really get data moving along?We have one server in particular that hosts a database (one of many onit) for a web application that gets decent traffic (it is a privatelogin based system for internal use and external use by our clients'agents). Periodically throughout the day, there are 2-5 minute burstswhere performance slows to a crawl. I want to spend more timeprofiling queries and such before recommending we spend more money,but the folks I am working for want quick results and there is quite abit of stored procedure logic to profile and investigate. I know thedisk sub-system is definately in need of an overhaul, but I would liketo get an idea of peformance gains from adding either one additionalchannel over the existing single channel as well as going thethree/four channel route over the existing single channel setup.Any information would be greatly appreciated.Regards,Tony

Chosen Datatype For Primary Key Field And Performance Questions??

May 25, 2007

Hi there,

I have been hired for a couple of weeks to investigate the performance of a sql server 2000 system.

One of the things that strikes me is that all the Primary key (identity field) fileds uses an decimal(18,0) as it's datatype.

An decimal with a precision of 18,0 takes 9 bytes for each column, while an int takes only 4 bytes and and bigint 8 bytes.

Many tables aren't that big, so the values will fit in an int datatype.

1. Is iot a good option to change the decimals columns to an int column ?

2. Many of these columns are indexed by a clustered index. Can the decimal datatype be a performance issue ?

3. sometimes they have deadlocks due page splits. Can this by reduced by changing the data types, while more data fit's into an page?

Thanks in advance,

Greetz,

Looking For A Tool/ Middleware Tool Which...

Jul 23, 2005

Hi all.I'm looking for a tool which should act like some kind of middleware/logical layer bewtween the SQL server and the webbased user interface.- It should be possible to easily create simple web forms (only datainput and output) without programming effort by "clicking" the fieldsand their order on the web mask within an admnistrative interface.- It should also be bossible to add "new fields" to the database,including field type, permissions, value lists etc. (excluding anybusiness logic) without programming effort by administration.I know, that most workflow tools or "Trouble Ticket Tools", based ondatabases have this feature to easily configure new masks and add newfields to the database, but i need it as an tool-unspecific layer forthe MS SQL Server.Thank you very much for your feedback, any ideas are welcome!Best regards, Heiko.

Some Things Not Working In 2005 And Working In 2000

Mar 3, 2006

hi

I had a view in which I did something like this
isnull(fld,val) as 'alias'

when I assign a value to this in the client (vb 6.0) it works ok in sql2000 but fails in 2005.
When I change the query to fld as 'alias' then it works ok in sql 2005 .
why ?? I still have sql 2000 (8.0) compatability.

Also some queries which are pretty badly written run on sql 2000 but dont run at all in sql 2005 ???

any clues or answers ?? it is some configuration issue ?

Thanks in advance.

ExecuteNonQuery - Add Working/Update Not Working

Jan 7, 2004

I am writing a pgm that attaches to a SQL Server database. I have an Add stored procedure and an Update stored procedure. The two are almost identical, except for a couple parameters. However, the Add function works and the Update does not. Can anyone see why? I can't seem to find what the problem is...

This was my test:

Dim cmd As New SqlCommand("pContact_Update", cn)
'Dim cmd As New SqlCommand("pContact_Add", cn)

Try
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure

cmd.Parameters.Add("@UserId", SqlDbType.VarChar).Value = UserId
cmd.Parameters.Add("@FirstName", SqlDbType.VarChar).Value = TextBox1.Text
[...etc more parameters...]
cmd.Parameters.Add("@Id", SqlDbType.VarChar).Value = ContactId

cn.Open()
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery()

Label1.Text = "done"
cn.Close()

Catch ex As Exception
Label1.Text = ex.Message
End Try

When I use the Add procedure, a record is added correctly and I receive the "done" message. When I use the Update procedure, the record is not updated, but I still receive the "done" message.

I have looked at the stored procedures and the syntax is correct according to SQL Server.

Please I would appreciate any advice...

Extremely Poor Query Performance - Identical DBs Different Performance

Jun 23, 2006

Hello Everyone,I have a very complex performance issue with our production database.Here's the scenario. We have a production webserver server and adevelopment web server. Both are running SQL Server 2000.I encounted various performance issues with the production server with aparticular query. It would take approximately 22 seconds to return 100rows, thats about 0.22 seconds per row. Note: I ran the query in singleuser mode. So I tested the query on the Development server by taking abackup (.dmp) of the database and moving it onto the dev server. I ranthe same query and found that it ran in less than a second.I took a look at the query execution plan and I found that they we'rethe exact same in both cases.Then I took a look at the various index's, and again I found nodifferences in the table indices.If both databases are identical, I'm assumeing that the issue is relatedto some external hardware issue like: disk space, memory etc. Or couldit be OS software related issues, like service packs, SQL Serverconfiguations etc.Here's what I've done to rule out some obvious hardware issues on theprod server:1. Moved all extraneous files to a secondary harddrive to free up spaceon the primary harddrive. There is 55gb's of free space on the disk.2. Applied SQL Server SP4 service packs3. Defragmented the primary harddrive4. Applied all Windows Server 2003 updatesHere is the prod servers system specs:2x Intel Xeon 2.67GHZTotal Physical Memory 2GB, Available Physical Memory 815MBWindows Server 2003 SE /w SP1Here is the dev serers system specs:2x Intel Xeon 2.80GHz2GB DDR2-SDRAMWindows Server 2003 SE /w SP1I'm not sure what else to do, the query performance is an order ofmagnitude difference and I can't explain it. To me its is a hardware oroperating system related issue.Any Ideas would help me greatly!Thanks,Brian T*** Sent via Developersdex http://www.developersdex.com ***

Help Making A Selection

Feb 25, 2005

I hope I can explain this somewhat coherantly. Here goes..

I have a products database. I want to select product details for items having distinct style codes. IE if there are 20 products that different from one another in some way, and 3 different style numbers throughout them, I want to end up with 3 products selected. I don't care which ones, as long as i have a sample product for each style.
I've attemped to use GROUP BY to do this, but it's not giving me what I want. I managed to get right number of products, but the query seems to have mixed and matched the fields together in an undesireable way. I guess this kinda makes sense, since providing aggregate functions for each of the extra fields is necessary.
SO THE QUESTION IS: How do I select (number of distinct styles) products, and still keep the records in tact as they should be?

Here is a sample...

Code:

SELECT DISTINCT Min(team) as team, min(pict) as pict, min(colors) as colors, min(league) as league, min(product_description) as product_description, min(category) as category, min(subcategory) as subcategory, min(style) as style
FROM prods
WHERE (style='style1' or style='style2' or style='style3')
AND league='leaguex'
AND soldout=''
GROUP by style
ORDER by style

Thanks very much for any help!! I'm sure I'm going about this all wrong.

Making Subtotals

Hello Everyone,

I have a dimension that has the following members:

Directors

Senior Managers

Managers

Senior Associates

Associates

But they way they need to be displayed includes subtotals. Senior Managers and Managers are placed into Management and Staff is a total of everyone except Directors. They should appear on the report in something like this:

Directors 10

Senior Managers 15

Managers 9

Management 24

Senior Associates 17

Associates 40

Staff 81

Total 91

What is the best way to do this? Right now I am using a matrix because I am also showing headcounts by Period. Is a table a better way to go? Is it something that should be done in my dimension?

I can do the Total part. I am just not sure how to make the subtotals inbetween the other lines.

Making Schema Changes

May 9, 2007

I have been reading up on how replicating schema changes work, but I must be missing something. When I configured a database for replication, it added a rowguid column to each table. This I understand.

I want to test making a schema change and replicating that change. For example, I tried to add a column to an existing table. When I tried to save the table i get the following error:

"Error validating the default for column rowguid".

"- Unable to modify table.
It is invalid to drop the default constraint on the rowguid column that is used by merge replication.
The DDL operation failed inside merge DDL replication manipulation.
The transaction ended in the trigger. The batch has been aborted."

So, what am I missing? Do i need to drop the rowguid column, add the new column, and then re-add the rowguid column?

Many thanks...
