Performing Backups Using Network Resource

I`m having difficulty performing a SQL dump using a network drive. I have successfully created a backup device on a network drive but when I go to perform a backup using it I get the following error message: "Can`t open dump device `RSS4DATARSA3_Dump.Dat`, device error or device off line. Please consult the SQL Server error log for more details. (Message 3201)" I can successfully perform a backup using a local drive but not this network drive. I have checked the permissions on the network drive and is seems ok. I use the following command to try to perform the backup: "DUMP DATABASE RSA3 TO DISK = `Rss4DataRSA3_Dump.Dat WITH STATS = 10, INIT". Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I start receiving error 'Access is denied' executing following command:
exec xp_cmdshell 'dir \IP-ADDRESSSHARE_NAME*.*'
The configuration is following:
Two computers CO1 and CO2
Both computers are not in domain,
Both computers use the same local windows account to run their instances of SQL server 2005 and passwords for those accounts are the same
Both local accounts are in their local administrative groups
Both servers do not have configured proxy account. I execute sql commands under ther sysadmin account
If I execute this command from CO1 to CO2, everything works.
exec xp_cmdshell 'dir \CO2_IPSHARE_NAME*.*'
If I execute from CO2 to CO1 I receive access denied.
exec xp_cmdshell 'dir \CO1_IPSHARE_NAME*.*'
If I will log in to the computer CO2 under account of SQL server and execute the dir command from it, it works.
dir \CO1_IPSHARE_NAME*.*
Could you point me where to look?

Getting "The specified network name is no longer available" during SQL Backups dumping to Network share.
- problem started occurring on July 3, 2015
- our Ola Hallengren backup solution deployed to over 150 SQL Servers.. was running fine for almost 2 years
- Occurring in multiple SQL Server environments: W/Server 2012 Ent, W/Server 2008 Ent, SQL 2012 Ent, SQL 2008 R2 Ent
- We're utilizing latest Ola Hallengren backup solution (Jan 2015 release)
- Dumping to network share (jobs running under SQL Agent account w/ local admin & sysadmin on server and full rights to Network Share

The space allocated to the Log in question is 180 GB. During this time period I was running TLog backups every 5 minutes, yet the log continued to chew through to 80 GB used, even after the process was complete and a final TLog backup had been taken. It continued to stay very large until the Full backup was complete -- or something else that I'm unaware of completed. Like every other DBA I typically take a TLog backup to shrink the log, but what appeared to be the case here was the Full completed and it released the used log space. All said, will Transaction Log backups not free up the log during Full backups?

We have a Windows 2003 Web Edition server serving a site through IIS. It connects to a Windows 2003 Standard Edition server running SQL 2000 SP3a.
This site receives the following error as seen in the topic:
[DBNETLIB][ConnectionRead (recv()).]General network error. Check your network documentation.
We've configured the server network utility to only allow TCP/IP connections. The connection string for the site is as follows:

Any ideas or tips on solving this issue? We've noticed it is due to larger queries as smaller ones do work with no problems.
The servers are behind a BSD box running iptables, has 1433,1434 along with standard web ports wide open. Anything outbound is allowed.
Some further testing via ODBC on the IIS server improved things. No more connection pooling for the SQL Server driver allows for 1/3 of the query to run. Still 2/3s of it doesn't show up, and that general network error message appears.
Should have 330 rows if it works right.

While running a DTS, many times the error message: "[DBNETLIB][ConnetionWrite (WrapperWrite()).]General network error. Check your network documentation." appears.
Does somebody knows why?
I am running the DTS from a computer (not the server where the DTS is stored) and it is connected without any problem when this happens.

Hi Every one,
I am using .Net 1.1 for my web application.
And my database server is SQL Server 2005.
My application is running fine, as i can login to it and also able to view pages. But when i open Order management(having 3K records) its give me error,
General Network Error. Check your network documentation
I have also searched many articles and tried following solutions but nothing working
- connectiontimeout = 0, max pool size = 7500/100, pooling = false
- SSL disabling enforce security false as mentioned in microsoft kb article.
And there's nothing any issue with hardware/firewall as my application's login and other forms are working fine(which use same database with same connection string)
Can any one please help me to solve this error?

I use sqlclient to connect directly from my mobile 5 pocketpc to a sql server 2005 database on my desktop.
I use a sqldatareader to traverse the results of a query that delivers 2 fields: (1) the filespec, and (2) the image field.
I use a filestream with a binary writer to write the contents of the image data to the pocketpc's storage card.
I have a test table with 10 images, not one more than 4 MB. I cannot complete a test run prior to receiving the general network error.
The pocketPC is connected via activesync to the desktop, and I connect to the database with:
Integrated Security=false;
user id=sa
password=admin.
Any help with this strange error would be greatly appreciated.

Hi I get a "General Network Error Check network documentation" error sometimes, but its only while insert or update statements are fired while selects keep working perfectly.

In Oracle & Sybase you can set login resource limits to restrict, time of day, number of i-o's, cpu use etc for any login, at the login method. All actions done from a resource limit constrained login inherit the constraints.
Is there any way to implment this with any MS SQL Server version from 200-2005/SP2?
Before anyone answers, please do not suggest set rowcount etc.

I have a deadlock chain that shows 9 parallel insert jobs into the same table. The resource that is locked (with an exclusive lock) shows a HOBT_ID...which corresponds to a clustered index.
My question is how would INSERT statements cause a whole index to lock (there is no TABLOCK hint).

Can anyone assist me in solving this problem:
DTSTransformCopy: ValidateSchema failed; see Extended Error Information.
TransformCopy 'DTSTransformation_10' validation error: Source column too narrow to contain a valid value of destination column's datatype for column pair 1 (source column 'Col010'(DBTYPE_STR), destination column 'CHECKDAT' (DBTYPE_DBTIMESTAMP)).

I use cursors inside stored procedures, they are generally 20 - 50 records. I have been told that cursors are very resource intensive. Am I setting myself up for scaling problems when we have hundreds of users all running these procedures? The cursors are only used within the context of the stored procedure. Any opinions/insight on this would be appreciated.

I'm attempting to update a table of around 100,000 records with a table of 20,000 records using a cursor since the update is based on a row by row criteria. When doing this I'm getting an error
--Resource is low some results are dropped--
I then cut down the table with 20,000 to a table of 5,000 and still get the same error. I've also tried to use a fast_forward cursor but still no luck
Can any-one help. I know there is a way to do this using a quick update statement but I need to know this for other insert statements anyway.

(the instance WILL NOT COME UP UNLESS I USE THE /F /T3608 from a command promt.. please .. any suggestions??????????????????????

We have a JDBC project that works with SQLServer, along with otherDBs. During development, we noticed that resource useage on SQLServerseemed to grow steadily - Processes, Process Locks and/or Object Locks,according to the "Current Activity" section of Enterprise Manager.Fairly quickly (a few hours), SQLServer would use so many resources itused up all available system memory and the system would crash.Without understanding much about why that was happening, mostly out oftrial and error, we started using transactions, which seemed to fix theproblem. Now, one of our customers seems to be seeing the problem again:511 Process Locks, 18 Object Locks, 526 Processesafter a few hours. The system runs out of memory and crashes. We havemultiple test configurations, including Linux, Win2K, XP, but we donot see the same behaviour - we typically see no more than 20 or 30processes, process locks or object locks, and our tests seem to runindefinitely. Since we can not reliably reproduce the symptoms that ourcustomer sees, it is very difficult for us to analyze, let alone, fixthe problem.Does anyone - especially SQLServer pros - have any insight as to what isgoing on here and/or how to fix it? Pooled-resource clustering is a combination, of sorts, of Windows clustering and virtualization.
Essentially, it€™s a means of allowing SQL Server instances to become €œvirtual SQL Servers€? in
the sense of true VMs. They€™re encapsulated and can be easily and quickly moved between
physical computers. It borrows concepts from Windows clustering but does so with a crucial
difference that eliminates the resource management overhead that comes along with Windows
clustering. Another term for this technique is shared storage clustering.
Technology Overview
With pooled-resource clustering, a cluster of servers€”which can all have different hardware
specifications€”are connected to a single, shared storage system (typically a SAN). By

I have a 2005 server that is upgraded to SP2 and the error log indicates it is version 9.00.3042.00. However, the system resource database for the same server is reporting as version 9.00.2047.00. From another post I have found out the some replication problems I am having are due to this discrepancy.
I have reapplied SP2 hoping it would change the resource db version, but it did not. Is there another way I can upgrade the resource db without re-installing SQL from scratch?

I searched and did not find it. Can anyone please direct me?
